It gives me great pleasure to introduce the 10th editionof the Ayrshire Golf Association Yearbook in my first yearas President of the Association. 2012 was once again abusy year for Ayrshire in terms of hosting major events. On the amateur circuit, June saw the Scottish OpenStrokeplay Championship being hosted by Kilmarnock(Barassie) GC and that Amateur Championship returningto Royal Troon GC, where Ayrshire interest continuedwell into the final stages. In July the Scottish Senior’sMatchplay Championship was held at West Kilbride withthe Home Internationals being hosted by Glasgow Gailesin August. The top senior professionals in world golf alsovisited the Ayrshire coast when the Senior OpenChampionship was held at Turnberry at the end of July.

We can look forward to 2013 when the Scottish Boys’ Area Team Championshipswill be held at Prestwick St Cuthbert in June.

On a more positive note, although many of our talented players again competedwell throughout 2012, the Amateur Championship and Home Internationals willlong be etched in the memory of young Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock (Barassie) GC).In the Amateur Championship, Jack came so close to emulating Michael Stewart’sperformance of last year before losing at the Semi Final stage in the closest ofcontests. The Home Internationals provided a more successful conclusion as hisoutstanding contribution throughout the event helped the Home Nation lift thetitle.

The quality of Jack’s performances throughout the year also saw him invited totaste the professional game in the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart and the JohnnyWalker Championship at Gleneagles. I am delighted to report that hisachievements have recently been recognised at national level by being awardedthe accolade of 2012 SGU Scottish Amateur Golfer of the Year. Following in the footsteps of last year’s winner Michael Stewart, who is now makinghis way in the professional game, Jack’s success means the title has come to

Ayrshire in successive seasons, something that we should all be justly proud of.Jack followed this by winning the Scottish Universities Golf Competition atFairmount St Andrews.

In the forthcoming Season, Jack McDonald has been selected for the Men’sPerformance Squad with Ewan Walker being selected for the Boys DevelopmentSquad; we wish them both a successful 2013.

2012 was a mixed year for the County Teams. The Senior Squad had a poor AreaTeam Championship at Blairgowrie, despite some good individual rounds from JackMcDonald and Steven McEwan, we failed to qualify for the Matchplay stage. At theArea Boys Team Championship at Cowglen we had high hopes with two ScottishInternationalists; the Team did not reach their full potential and struggled after apoor morning show.

Our Junior’s also achieved this year with Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert)winning the Ayrshire Boys Matchplay; Ayrshire Junior Order of Merit and votedAyrshire Junior Golfer of the Year, climaxing by winning the Scottish Boys’ JuniorChampion of Champions at the Dukes, St Andrews. Recognition must go the BlairGavin (Kilmarnock Barassie) for being selected as 1 of the 10-strong Scotland Teamfor the Under 16 International v England.

In addition, a high profile success also came the way of young Alasdair Berry (IrvineRavenspark) who won the 2012 Disabled British Open at East Sussex after top threefinishes in each of the last three years. This year has also seen Alasdair’sdetermination rewarded with selection for the Ayrshire Youth Team in the West ofScotland League – an outstanding achievement.

On the domestic front, 2012 proved an excellent year for David Wilson (TroonWelbeck) He had a great weekend by winning on the Saturday, the Edward Trophyby 4 shots and on the Sunday the Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship. David thenwent on the following month to win the Matchplay Championship at a very coldWestern Gailes against Tommy McInally (Loudoun) in difficult conditions thematch going to the 18th. Making him only the third person to lift the double. Davidalso went on the win the Doc Thom Salver Ayrshire Order of Merit an excellentyear for him.

The Ayrshire Four Ball Championship was contested between brothers George andDavid McCulloch (Brunston Castle) against Robert Marshall and Phil Rooney (Beith),with the brothers eventually taking the title. In the West of Scottish League, theA Team and the Under 18 Boys both finished third, with the Youth Team narrowlysecuring Runners-Up.

The Ayrshire Scratch Leagues were well contested once again with the best of theAyrshire Golfers. Division One Champions were Loudoun just beating KilmarnockBarassie. In Division Two, West Kilbride will gain promotion after winning theirDivision, as will Largs, Girvan and Rowallan Castle in their respective Leagues.

In conclusion, I would like to say a huge thank you to my colleagues in the Executivefor their support and hard work throughout the year. Sincere thanks also go the allthose Clubs who gave up their facilities to allow us to stage our Championshipsand Team Matches throughout the year.

Particular thanks to the immediate Past President, David Miller, for his hard workand dedication over the past two years serving as President. David’s support andguidance has hopefully prepared me for this Office

John Nordbo continued with the coaching portfolio in 2012, further developing the AyrshireGolf Academy programme to integrate with the national performance guidelines. John Nordboretired from The executive at the AGM in October 2012 and John Rushbury will take over thecoaching portfolio for 2013.With the development of performance centres nationally, The association is working closelywith the Scottish Golf Union to integrate the Ayrshire Academy Programme within thenational Performance Centre framework which will have the added bonus of allowing TheAssociation to investigate, and direct funding towards, other avenues of player and teamdevelopment in 2013.

The club coaching grant scheme was again in place in 2012 with a number of clubs with junior members usingthe scheme to augment their own in club coaching arrangements.

Our thanks must also be recorded for the efforts of our coaching professionals, Graham Ross (Inverclyde), RichardGordon (Ayr Belleisle) and David Fleming (Prestwick), who continue to work together in the development of thecounty coaching strategy.

Robert Wilson was in charge of administering the youth team for a second successive yearin 2012 and for the second successive year the team finished a close second in the West OfScotland Youth League with only one defeat and one draw in five matches. The 3 playeryouth team who represented Ayrshire in the Glasgow Youths Championship also performedwell under Robert’s guidance, finishing in third place in the competition. The annual match with the South Of Scotland was reintroduced in 2012, involving a youthsand boys team of 12 players each side, but despite some good individual performancesAyrshire lost the Centenary Salver to their hosts by 11.5 – 6.5 at Stranraer in 2012, an willbe hoping for a better result in 2013 when the match is played in Ayrshire.

In their second season managing the boys team, Cliff Francis and JohnDuncan experienced some mixed results, with the team finishing in midtable in the West Of Scotland under 18 league with two wins, one drawand two defeats in their matches. Despite having high hopes of challenging for the title again, in theScottish Boys Area Team Championship at Cowglen poor scoring in themorning foursomes left the team with an uphill battle in the afternoonsingles, and despite some good individual rounds, the team never realisedtheir potential and finished well adrift of the championship winners. With

the Boys Area team Championship being held on home turf in 2013, at Prestwick St Cuthbert Golf Club, theAyrshire team will be hoping to improve on their 2012 performance this year, at the club which celebrates 50 yearsat its present course in 2013.

Ricky Magee, assisted by Allan Muir and John Rushbury administered the A Team in 2012.Despite a good start in the West Of Scotland leagues, Ayrshire suffered defeats in their lasttwo matches which left them in third place in the final standings. In the Scottish Area TeamChampionships in May at Blairgowrie, the Ayrshire team failed to progress from the strokeplayqualifying rounds to the matchplay semi final stage for the first time in the three years sincethe competition changed to the present format.

TournamentsThe present Vice President James McMurdo, assisted by Mike Hazlewood and JohnRushbury, continued as tournament administrator in 2012 with all events againenjoying good level of entries.

The new format for the Scratch (Summer) Leagues, which was introduced during2011, was continued in 2012 and appears popular with competing clubs. Therewere some issues arising in 2012 with fixtures not being played but it is anticipatedthat some agreed alterations to the rules for 2013 will address this issue.

The Association presently have six SGU certified referees, Alasdair Malcolm, David Miller, JamesMcMurdo, Iain Harvey, Cliff Francis and John Duncan.. Alasdair Malcolm is also R & A Rules qualified. Thanks are due to all the referees for their contribution towards the successful administration of ourchampionships throughout the season.

During the year, Executive members are called upon to assist in the running of national events heldwithin the county whilst individual members also take on the task of the ongoing administration ofextended competitions, including the Champion Of Champions, Fourball and Scratch league events,to ensure their smooth and successful conclusion by the end of the playing season.

Allan Muir, assisted by John Rutherford and David McKie and executive members Ricky Magee andMike Hazlewood, continued to look after the course rating programme in Ayrshire in 2012, ensuringthat the courses throughout the country have a rating and Standard Scratch Score that accuratelyreflects the difficulty of the course. Courses rated during 2012 included Troon Fullarton, Girvan, Largs,Prestwick St Nicholas, Irvine and the Arran Course at Turnberry.

Allan Muir and his team will continue to oversee the course rating scheme in 2013

David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) rounded of a superbweekend on Sunday 22nd April with his first win in theAyrshire Strokeplay Championship, at Prestwick StNicholas.

Having won the prestigious Edward Trophy by 4 shots, over Glasgow Gailes on Saturday 21st April, 17 year oldWilson repeated the winning margin to take the countytitle 24 the following day.

With a capacity field of 60 players, and a handicapballot of 2.2, Wilson was one of only five players whomatched par or better in the first round, his one underpar 68 lying just one shot off the halfway lead held byKeith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle) and John Haggarty(Loudoun).Stephen Spence (Irvine) and John Sloan (Doon Valley)were one shot further back on 69.

In the afternoon, 69 was the best score posted, which was achieved by four players. Along with StuartMiller (Kilmarnock Barassie), Callum Beveridge (Troon Welbeck) and the ultimate winner DavidWilson, former Champion Tommy McInally (Loudoun) matched that score to set a target of 142,which was ultimately only bettered by two players in the field.

Despite fading a little in the afternoon, Keith Hamilton's 74 in the second round was enough to betterMcInally’s score by one to take the lead and leave David Wilson, in the final group on the course, ashis only serious challenger for the trophy.

Needing a 72, three over par, or better to take the title, Wilson stood on the final tee on level par.Despite his tee shot at the par 3 finishing hole coming to rest perilously close to a green side bunker,Wilson played a delicate chip to within a couple of feet of the hole and confidently slotted home hispar putt for a level par round of 69, a total of 137 and a four shot winning margin.

Ayrshire Matchplay Championship

David Wilson (Troon Welbeck) completed a notable county titledouble on Thursday 10th May when he won the Ayrshire MatchplayChampionship at Western Gailes in an exciting final against TommyMcInally (Loudoun).Having won the County Strokeplay title in April, Wilson became onlythe third player ever to win both the Strokeplay and Matchplay titlesin the same year, following Leslie Crawford (Kilmarnock Barassie) in1983 and Gary Holland (Ballochmyle) in 1999.The final was played in bitterly cold conditions with a strongnortherly wind sweeping across the course, but despite the conditionsboth players produced some fine golf. Two down after three holes, Wilson managed to level the match aftersix before going ahead for the first time at the eighth with a birdiethree, before McInally fought back to take the ninth and square thematch at the turn.Wilson opened the back nine by taking the first three holes in par to forge a three hole lead with sixto play but again McInally fought back, winning the 13th and 14th to reduce Wilson’s lead to one hole.A good par putt under pressure at the 17th saw McInally again square the match and the destiny ofthe title rested on the final hole.On the final green, McInally faced a five foot putt to take the match into extra holes but despitestriking the putt well, the ball slipped past the left side of the hole and victory went to David Wilson. In the semi finals, David Wilson beat Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Nicholas) by 3 & 2 whilst TommyMcInally beat David Orchison (Ballochmyle) by 4 & 3.

Girvan Golf Club won the 2012 Ayrshire ClubChampionship on Sunday 15th July with StevenStamper setting a new course record for the Irvine(Bogside) course.

15 clubs from throughout the county contested thechampionship and Girvan eventually secured thetitle by two strokes, from former winners IrvineRavenspark, thanks in no small part to a superb twounder par score of 69 which was confirmed by clubofficials as the course record for the recentlyextended championship course at the Bogside links.

Three successive threes at the closing holes of the outward nine saw Stamper turn in 34, two underpar. A bogey five at the tenth was immediately followed by a birdie three at the eleventh and a furtherbogey five at the fifteenth was countered by a birdie three at the seventeenth to bring Stamper homein level par 35 for his record score of 69.

Gary Bryden added a 77 for a team total of 146 with Stuart White's 79 being discarded but providinga useful back up score in the event of a tie.

stroke victory over defending champion Callum Beveridge

(Troon Welbeck).

In perfect, sunny conditions, Walker led from start to finish

following a superb three under par 70 in the first round,

which proved to be the only under par round returned in the

entire competition.

Defending champion Beveridge kept the pressure on Walker

at the half way stage with a level par round of 70, the

highlight of which was an albatross two at the par five third

hole.

A second round 72 gave Walker a total of 139 and as

Beveridge could only match Walker’s score in the afternoon

round, victory went to Euan Walker.

Stuart Easton (Irvine) took third place on 150 after rounds of 73 and 77.

McEwan's lead was increased to two holes at the third when Graham conceded the hole after driving into the burnand McEwan went further ahead at the fourth after Graham found a bunker from the tee.Graham halted the onslaught from McEwan briefly, halving the fifth and sixth holes in par.Having won through to the final with a stunning win against Euan Brown (Kilmarnock Barassie), coming back fromfour down after four to win on the final green, Graham needed something of the same form to return, but furtherbunker trouble at the seventh allowed McEwan to increase his lead to four holes courtesy of a solid par four.At the famous par three eighth, The Postage Stamp, Graham's tee shot was bunkered on the right and his first effortfailed to extracate the ball from the sand, whilst McEwan secured a par to increase his lead to five holes.McEwan took the final hole of the outwards half to turn for home six up, and he rapidly closed out the game, takingthe tenth and halving the eleventh to go dormie with seven holes to play. When McEwan reached the twelfth green in two, Graham graciously conceded the hole, the match and theChampion Of Champions title to McEwan.

44 clubs took part in the 2012 Ayrshire Fourball Championship, which was won for the first time by a pairing from BrunstonCastle. Siblings David & George McCulloch (Brunston Castle) beatGraeme Gebbie & John Houston (Loudoun) by 4 & 3, at BrunstonCastle, in the semi final to book their place in the final againstRobert Marshall & Phil Rooney (Beith) who won through in atight semi final at Irvine against Willie Morgan & Willie MorganJnr. (Irvine Ravensaprk) at the 21st hole. The final was held at Kilmarnock (Barassie) on Sunday 23rdSeptember and in excellent playing conditions both teamsproduced some sparkling golf in a tie which was played in themost sporting manner.Robert Marshall was the low man, playing off 3, and gave shots

during the match to the other finalists George McCulloch (7), David McCulloch (8) and Phil Rooney (15).The Brunston Castle pair opened with a birdie four to take an early lead, only to see Beith level the match at thesecond hole with a birdie three. A third successive birdie won the next hole, the Brunston Castle players edgingahead once again.Another birdie three at the fifth hole increased the Brunston Castle lead to two holes, a margin they maintaineduntil the ninth where Beith pulled one back to turn for home one behind. At the 10th the McCulloch's restored their two hole advantage again and a nett birdie at the twelfth increasedthe Brunston Castle lead to three holes with six to play.At the thirteenth hole, Marshall produced a superb approach shot to the green which came to rest just three feetfrom the hole to set up a winning birdie three and reduce the defecit to two holes once again. The 185 yard par three thirteenth hole was playing into a difficult cross wind and only George McCulloch foundthe green from the tee, his ball coming to rest eighteen feet below the hole. McCulloch looked favourite to winthe hole but Marshall holed a superb 25 foot putt from the back of the green for a par three, only to see McCullochfollow him in for a winning birdie two, and a three hole lead once again. With only four holes remaining, the Beith duo needed to produce the same kind of magic that had seen then fightback from dormie five down in a previous round to win at the third extra hole, and Robert Marshall gave his teama chance with a superb second shot to the green which finished five feet to the left of the hole. Marshall hit hisbirdie putt on line but was wanting a little on pace and his effort pulled up agonisingly short leaving davidMcCulloch the chance to hole a four and a half foot putt for the title. Mc Culloch made no mistake, confidentlyholing his putt for a nett birdie three and a 4 & 3 victory for Brunston Castle.Despite the disappointment of losing out at the final stage, Marshall & Rooney will have the opportunity to goone better next year, having qualified to represent their club in the 2013 competition, as indeed have the 2012champions from Brunston Castle.

The outstanding individual performance of 2012 was that of Jack

McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) who provided local supporters

many highlights throughout the year.

Early successes in a number of student events culminated in

victory in the British Students Championship at West Lancs. in

April and selection for the Great Britain team for the World

Universities Championship in the Czech Republic in July. A bronze

medal in the Scottish Youths championship in May, over the

Ladybank course where he won the national Boys Strokeplay event

in 2009, was followed in June by a memorable performance in The

Amateur Championship over Royal Troon where he went all the

way to the semi final before losing out to the eventual runner up,

Mattias Shwab (Austria) by two holes.

Selected for the Scotland team for the Home Internationals at

Glasgow Gailes in August, McDonald helped Scotland to win the Raymond Trophy for the first time

since 2006.

His 2012 season culminated by following fellow Ayrshire player Michael Stewart who won the award

in 2011, in being named the SGU Golfer of the Year, being nominated as a finalist in the Sunday Mail

Scottish Sports Awards and also being selected as one of the six strong SGU Mens Performance Squad

for 2013.

Other Notable Performances During The Year

2012 was also a memorable year for 21 year old Alasdair Berry

(Irvine Ravenspark) who, at the fourth time of asking, won the

Disabled British Open Golf Championship at East Sussex Golf

Club in August. Berry overcame a two-shot deficit after the first

round to overhaul overnight leader Joakim Bjorkman from

Sweden to take the title with an impressive two-round score of

153, just nine over par. The six stroke win was the realisation of

a four year quest, having been third twice and second in the three

previous years.

Berry followed his win by representing Scotland and Great Britain

in a number of events, taking part in the Seve day Final at The

Belfry and being nominated as a finalist in the Sunday Mail

Scottish Sports Awards alongside Jack McDonald.

2012 also saw Berry make a successful debut for his county in the youths team and in November his

success was recognised by his home club when he was elected an Honorary Member of Irvine

Ravenspark.
