Baptism is the beginning of a new life for each

of us. It can be a wonderful life of purpose.

When we are baptized, we covenant with the

On a Golden Springtime (Childrens Songbook, 88)

When Joseph Smith was fourteen years old, he

did not know what church to join, so he went

to the woods to pray for help in his decision. As

he was praying he saw a very bright light. In

the light were Heavenly Father and Jesus

Christ. Heavenly Father pointed to Jesus and

said, This is my Beloved Son. Hear Him! Jo-

seph Smith asked which church to join. The

Son, Jesus Christ, told him not to join any of

    them.

Joseph was chosen by God to bring about the

  • Keeping Promises Alma 24:15-19

I Want to Live the Gospel (Childrens Songbook, 148)

The people of Ammon made a promise when

they embraced the gospel to set aside their

swords, spears and weapons. They would not

fight anymore. They buried their weapons in a

hole and made a covenant with God that

they would never fight or kill again, even if it

meant that they would lose their own lives.

The wicked Lamanites came to attack the

people of Ammon. Instead of fighting, they

knelt to pray. Many of the people were killed,

but when the Lamanites saw that the people

would not fight, they, too, dropped their

weapons. The people of Ammon had kept

their promise not to fight. Heavenly Father

blessed those that had died and blessed many

others to know that the church was true.

  • Jesus Christ Heals a Blind Man

    John 9:1-7

Miracles were a part of Jesus Christs life when

he was on the earth. One Sabbath day he and

his disciples came upon a man who had been

blind since he was born. Jesus Christ loved the

people, and he wanted to help this man. He

spat on the ground and made mud. Then he

took this mud and put it on the mans eyes. He

told the man to go and wash his eyes in the

Whenever I Think About Pioneers (CS, 222)

After the Prophet Joseph Smith was killed by

wicked men, the members of the Church knew

that they were in danger. Brigham Young, their

new leader, led the members from Nauvoo,

Illinois, to Winter Quarters, Nebraska, and from

there to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. The entire

journey was more than a thousand miles long.

Between 1847 and 1869 about seventy thou-

sand members of the Church made the trek

across mountains, rivers, and treacherous ter-

rain to seek religious freedom. We call these

    wonderful and faithful people pioneers.

The pioneers left a legacy of faith, love for one

another, and love for God. We now celebrate

Pioneer Day each year on July 24 to remem-

ber and honor the faith and sacrifice of these

    courageous pioneers.

called by God to preach repentance to the people

of Ninevah. He believed the people would not listen

to his message and so rather than obey the call of

the Lord, he travelled across the sea. God caused a

huge storm to rage against the boat Jonah was

travelling on. Jonah was tossed from the boat and

immediately the storm stopped. A great fish swal-

lowed Jonah. Later, in the Bible, Jesus said it was a

whale that swallowed Jonah. He spent three days in

the belly of the whale and was spit out when he

    agreed to go to Ninevah.

    Are all callings easy?
