stacked with No. 1s and devoid of covers or album cuts. He instead opted for hits curated from his entire discography – from debut single “Hicktown” to his current offering at Country radio, “Blame It On You.” “This song came out after all this pandemic crap, so I’ve never played it live,” he noted of the latter. “You’re the first ones to hear it.” Crowd singalongs grew in frequency (and volume) as the night continued and fans – and Aldean – became more comfortable with the distance, connecting despite the sectioned set-up … or maybe it was confidence imbued by a few “My Kinda Party” $11 cocktails. Regardless, somewhere along the way, the show morphed from the unknown to the familiar as Aldean and his band worked the stage and pulled from nearly all of his nine albums. “Dirt Road Anthem,” “Tattoos On This Town,” “Burnin’ It Down” and “Fly Over States” were among the performances eliciting strong audience reaction. Never a fan of encores, Aldean said, “I personally think it’s complete horse shit.” He continued, “We just play you guys everything we got, and when the show is over, it’s over.” Sticking to his word, the show ended with “You Make It Easy” and “The Only Way I Know.” After dropping a few hints the first night – or “first step,” as Aldean christened it – the Back In The Saddle Tour was officially announced Saturday (5/15). “It’s made us all even more ready to get back to life as we all know it,” he shared. “Being on the road makes all of us – the band, the crew and me – happy, and I haven’t felt this excited about going on tour in 15 years.” Following more than a year of postponements and cancellations, all signs point to the touring industry’s eventual return to pre-pandemic normal. It may look a little different, but the connection, the catharsis and the community of live music – the lifeblood of this industry – is back. We back. –Caitlin DeForest

Chart Chat Congratulations to Sam Hunt, Royce Risser, Katie Dean, David Friedman, Chris Schuler and the MCA promotion team on reaching the summit with “Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90s.” This is Hunt’s eighth visit to the No.1 slot and comes just shy of the seventh anniversary of the release of his first single (and No. 1) “Leave The Night On” (CAW 6/9/14). Songwriters are Zach Crowell, Chris LaCorte, Josh Osborne, Ernest K. Smith and Hunt. Kudos to Damon Moberly and the Mercury crew on scoring 44 adds for “You Should Probably Leave” by Chris Stapleton. It joins “Either Way” and “Starting Over” to become his third single to earn most-added honors.

would be comfortable attending an indoor live music performance immediately. Perhaps not surprisingly, as age increased, willingness to participate in indoor events decreased. Those results were consistent for both men and women. (See graph on page 1.) Survey results for outdoor events are even more promising than indoor shows. Nearly 68% of survey participants say they would be comfortable attending an outdoor live music performance today, but that number increases to more than 80% within the next six months. Similar to the indoor results, as age increased, the willingness to attend events decreased. (See graph, page 1.) Early-May shows held in Texas likely reflect the survey data. In Fort Worth, RCA’s Miranda Lambert recently sold out five shows at Billy Bob’s Texas. Although Texas venues are allowed to operate at full capacity, Billy Bob’s continues to limit capacity to 50%, or approximately 3,000 people, and encourages mask-wearing while also checking patrons’ temperatures at the door. The venue’s radio marketing has centered on safety. “During peak pandemic, we focused on our safe and clean messaging in radio

An Off The Record conversation with McVay Media Pres. Mike McVay: I grew up in Pittsburgh (Go Steelers) listening to two Top 40 stations, KQV-AM and WIXZ-AM, but when WDVE-FM came on-air in 1971, it was all ‘DVE for me from there. My older brother and I stared into the studio window of WHJB/Greensburg, PA in 1969. When I saw the DJ playing records, I thought, “That looks easy. I want to do that!” I remember that moment clearly. I’ve had too many mentors to mention, but Ed Salamon hired me in Los Angeles when I was 24 and spent a lot of time teaching me programming over the years. George Francis, my GM in both Louisville and Cleveland, and Bernie Dittman, who gave me my first GM job were also mentors. And Charlie Cook, who has worked for me a couple of times during my career, has mentored me by example. My favorite song on the radio right now is “Waiting On A War” by Foo Fighters. Among my most influential music is: Led Zeppelin IV, because it introduced me to the songs “Stairway To Heaven,” “Black Dog” and “Rock And Roll.” Concerts, Heart – we’d never seen women rock like that – the Eagles’ Hell Freezes Over Tour and U2’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind. As for specific songs, “Leave It” by Yes. That’s a song I listen to as my plane takes off; the lyrics fit the life of a road warrior. Check it out! This past year, I learned what it’s like to have a “more normal” life and deepened my love for my family, our home and my appreciation for my career accomplishments. I am blessed. Professionally, I know I’m significantly more efficient and can accomplish more working remotely without the distractions of others in the office. I also learned to master the visual medium of a Zoom meeting which, by the way, led me to acknowledge that I need a facelift ... badly! In this next season, I’m anticipating less travel. Most of my clients would rather we have more frequent virtual visits and fewer or no in-person. It saves them money, and we’ve proved we don’t have to be in-person to strategize or create. I expect to continue attending conferences and seminars, because ongoing education is important for everyone in a business that changes as quickly as ours. I’m on all the major social platforms – Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Clubhouse and SnapChat. I follow my friends, those I admire and those I compete with. My postings are habitual; there are certain things I do every day of the week. Social media keeps me feeling aware of all that is important but is also recreational. I just finished The Queen’s Gambit. Shameless is also done, and I just started bingeing Outlander. I’m also three episodes in on Your Honor with Bryan Cranston and am hooked on This Is Us and a new show, Debris. Reach McVay here.

spots,” says Billy Bob’s Texas’ Dir./Marketing & Communications Terran Fleenor. “We wanted to assure guests that when they came to Billy Bob’s, they’d be in an environment that was going to allow them to comfortably and safely watch live music.” In Through The Outdoor: Success for indoor shows doesn’t seem to be limited to Fort Worth. Cox/Houston OM and KKBQ PD Johnny Chiang says, “All of the venues and promotional partners we work with are totally excited to be either open for business now or getting ready to do so. They all want to be on the station promoting current and future shows.” Despite venues’ interest in promoting shows, Texas stations are proceeding cautiously. Safety remains part of the message, even as with an increase in promotions for live, in-person performances. “The message is still to be safe and prudent,” Chiang says. In Austin, tickets to the annual two-day outdoor KOKEFEST went on sale last Monday (5/10). “We hope ticket sales reflect the enthusiasm we’ve heard from listeners,” says Reo Radio KOKE/Austin PD Eric Raines. “With any big festival, there’s a lot of money at stake. We announced a save-the-date almost three months ago, and we’ve been cautiously planning and working with the artists and management companies. We’re following the state and county lead as we make our decisions.” Though listeners’ indoor comfort-level falls short of outdoor, optimism is warranted. Most radio listeners who attended live performances before the pandemic are planning to return to live performances within six months. And, the data indicates a weekly increase of 5-10%. If those numbers hold steady, listener willingness to attend shows will be near pre-pandemic levels within the next few months. (See graph, page 11.) Local & Live: When it comes to marketing concerts, Raines says balance is key. “We want to promote live shows but do it in ways that do not alienate people who don’t feel comfortable,” he says.

Likewise, this may be the moment for broadcast radio to re-stake its advertising claim. “We have cut back on radio and focused on digital and social advertising over the last year,” notes Fleenor. “This is because we feel that there aren’t as many people on the road, which means there’s not as many people listening to radio during their commute. One thing we know is that everyone who is at home is scrolling through social media.” According to AIG’s survey, 90% of radio listeners are using social media daily, but with in-car time increasing, programmers may see indications that listeners’ muscle memory of radio-as-hub for concert news will kick in. “We’ve been back on the air promoting and executing our up-close-and-personal private [in-person] acoustic events for listeners,” explains Chiang. “The response has been through the roof. So far this year, we’ve had Matt Stell, Michael Ray, Kane Brown, Ingrid Andress, LoCash, Elvie Shane and Russell Dickerson perform for our listeners.” While Texas is often viewed as being different than the rest of the United States, its successes since restrictions were lifted can be a reason for optimism elsewhere. Using the data as a guidepost, programmers can confidently plan on seeing a return to pre-pandemic attendance levels for both indoor and outdoor concerts and events within an average of six-to-10 weeks of all COVID restrictions being lifted within their respective states. –Billy Ray McKim AIG’s Billy Ray McKim, Ph.D., is a data scientist specializing in media research and audience analysis and monetization.
