OBJECTIVE : TO DESIGN A COMPOUND
DIE FOR BLANKING AND PUNCHING
USING AXIOMATIC DESIGN APPROACH
AXIOMATIC DESIGN
Axiomatic design is a system
design methodology using matrix methods to
systematically analyze the transformation of customer
needs into functional requirements, design parameters,
and process variables. Specifically, functional
requirements (FRs) are related to design parameters
(DPs) .
The Design principles used here are the Design Axioms
governing the analysis and decision making process in
developing high quality product or system designs.
Two axioms used in design are :
1. The Independence Axiom : Maintain the
Independence of the Functional Requirement .
2. The Information Axiom : Minimize the information
content of the design.
Functional requirement
Functional requirements (FRs) are a minimum set of
independent requirements that completely characterize the
functional needs of the design solution in the functional
domain.
Some Functional Requirement of a Compound Die Design
are :
• Minimise Burrs.
• Minimise Rollover.
• Economy of material
Design parameters :-
Design Parameters are the elements of the design solution
in the physical domain that are chosen to satisfy the
specified Functional Requirements.
Some of the design parameters in compound die are
1. Clearance in punch and die
2. Material selections.
COMPOUND DIE
A die designed to simultaneously perform more
than one operation in each stroke of the press.
Compound die is more economical in mass
production as compared to single operation dies.
Application : Automobile Industry, Aerospace
Industry .
COMPONENTS OF COMPOUND DIE
COMPOUND DIE HAVE VARIOUS CRUCIAL
COMPONENTS SUCH AS :
1. DIE BLOCK
2. PUNCH PLATE
3. BLANK PUNCH
4. PIERCE PUNCH
5. STRIPPER PLATE
6. BLANKING DIE
7. PIERCING DIE
1.Clearance
2.Material used
3.Cutting force for punching
4.Cutting force for blanking
5.Economy of material
6.Design of spring used in stripper
OPERATIONS PERFORMED ON COMPOUND DIE
BLANKING : BLANKING IS THE OPERATION OF
CUTTING A FLAT SHAPE FROM SHEET METAL.
THE ARTICLE PUNCHED OUT IS CALLED BLANK
AND IT IS THE REQUIRED PRODUCT OF
OPERATION .
PUNCHING : IT IS A CUTTING OPERATION BY
WHICH SHAPED HOLES ARE MADE IN SHEET
METAL . PUNCHING IS SIMILAR TO BLANKING
EXCEPT THAT IN PUNCHING THE HOLE IS THE
DESIRED PRODUCT.
WORK PLAN
7th Semester
• Literature Review
• Determining Customer requirements.
• Determination of Functional Requirements and
corresponding Design Parameters.
• Implementation of Design Parameters in Designing the Die.
8th Semester
• Design of the prototype in Computer Software.
• Design is based upon the design parameters from previous
semester work.
