RAILWAY APPLICATIONS RAILWAY COMMUNICATIONS Axell Wireless is the recognised leader in railway coverage applications. Our work encompasses both trackside equipment and onboard train repeaters with solutions well adapted to the specific railway requirements regarding reliability and redundancy and our products comply with the often demanding physical requirements. We offer coverage solutions for GSM-R and public safety systems such as TETRA, based on established off-the shelf products. For other frequency areas we can offer almost any combination of customer specific repeater system, designed and built to fit the most detailed requirements. We also offer multi-operator OnBoard solutions (a multi- band, multi operator repeater specifically designed to provide coverage within train carriages) for any combination of frequency bands; GSM-R, GSM900, GSM1800 and UMTS.

Gsm-RChannel Selective repeaters for GSM-R provide a quick and cost effective method of extending coverage in new or existing GSM-R networks. The operators can expand a base station’s service area by filling in coverage holes caused by obstacles such as buildings, hilly terrain or tunnels.

Frequency Translating repeaters and Band Shifting repeaters provide output power levels comparable to base stations in GSM-R networks. They consist of two units, a Donor

Unit placed close to the BTS and a Remote Unit at the selected site. The link between the two units is run on another frequency or another band; hence the antenna isolation require-ments are significantly reduced.

Fibre-fed repeaters are designed with tunnel coverage in mind. The

repeaters are connected to the base stations via an optical master unit which converts the RF signal from the base station to an optical signal which is then transmitted to the repeater via a fibre-optic cable. The repeaters can be installed up to 20 km away from the base station.

onBoardThe Axell Wireless OnBoard solution is a multiband, multi operator repeater which is small and flexible specifically de-signed to provide coverage within train carriages. It is designed to withstand the physical environment inside a train and meet all required standards of train equipment. The OnBoard repeater can be equipped with any combination of the frequency bands; GSM-R, GSM900, GSM 1800 and UMTS.

The forthcoming ambition to roll out the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) with uniform and unique signalling standards throughout Europe puts new higher requirements on the GSM-R systems. Continuous and redundant coverage along all railway tracks including good tunnel radio coverage are essential and this is at the very core of the Axell Wireless competence area provided through a complete dedicated GSM-R product portfolio.

Axell Wireless’ expertise and broad product portfolio within tunnel radio coverage for any frequency band – CSR, TETRA, GSM-R, GSM 900, GSM 1800 or UMTS, is a great advantage when a seamless result is of great importance. The use of repeaters in tunnel radio applications has shown to be ideal because of space and RF propagation issues. A typical installation of radio coverage in a longer tunnel uses optical fibre fed repeaters and radiating cable. The repeaters at the mouth of the tunnel or located within the tunnel can either be fed via optical fibre from the nearest base station or via an off-air repeater. Full system redundancy can easily be achieved if required. Shorter tunnels can be covered with antenna fed repeaters.

REFEREncEsAxell Wireless has an extensive list of references for Railway Applications, here are mentioned a few. Sweden, Banverket, Axell Wireless has the contract to deliver GSM-R solutions for more than 70 tunnels. Many of these also include TETRA installations.

UK, Network Rail, Axell Wireless has the contract to provide nation wide GSM-R coverage in more than 350 tunnels.

UK, Channel Tunnel Rail Link GSM-R and TETRA solutions for 8 tunnels on the railway line that runs from Lodon to the Euro tunnel.

UK, Channel Tunnel, UHF system for 40km railway tunnel.

UK, Heathrow Express, repeater system for VHF, UHF, GSM 900, GSM 1800 in 13km railway tunnel

Spain, Renfe (ADIF), GSM-R equipment has been delivered for the Madrid - Santander normal speed line (20 repeaters sites for 18 tunnels).

Spain, Figueras-Perpignan tunnel Project, Axell Wireless will deliver GSM-R Repeater equipment to this project via Nortel.

Singapore, Light Railway Tunnels, repeater system for TETRA, TETRAPOL, GSM900 and GSM1800.

Norway, Jernbaneverket, Iron Ore Line, 15 GSM-R repeater sites for 8 tunnels.

Germany, Deutsche Bahn, Axell Wireless has signed a contract with DB to deliver GSM-R repeater equipment to 150-500 repeater sites.

Czech Republic, fiber and RF fed GSM-R Repeaters for pilot line.

Sweden, Banverket and Swedish Telecom operators, 300 OnBoard repeaters installed.

Norway, NSB and Norwegian Telecom operators, Axell Wireless has a contract for 56 OnBoard repeaters.

tEtRaIn the TETRA area Axell Wireless offers a comprehensive range including fibre-fed repeaters as well as off-air repeaters. For large confined areas such as tunnels, we offer a reliable solution with fibre-fed repeaters linked to an optical master unit, OMU. Over 20 repeaters can be connected to the same OMU and be installed up to 20 km from the base station. Redundancy in the system can easily be accomplished. Off-air repeaters can be used as stand alone repeaters to cover a limited area or as input to a fibre-fed system.

sERVicEsThrough our dedicated Field Services team, Axell Wireless can provide on-site services for systems including system design, installation supervision, commissioning and integration as well as undertaking training and maintenance support.
