DRY DOCKS

The waterfront is one of the aspects with the greatest potentials and is a big asset to the site, which have been considered carefully when decided what to do with it. All of it has been given to the use of the public in different ways, through direct connection to the water as well as through seating or pedestrian access next to it.

The site, according to our vision, should be a place for residence and work, but also a place for everyone else who does not necessarily have this relationship to Varvstaden. The activities, the food offered and the public areas should cater for diversity, and invite people from every social class, ethnic backgrounds as well as age groups. This will keep the site lively and appreciated by everybody, as it will possibly offer something that appeals to most at least in some way.

Commercially there will be spaces in the mixed uses buildings, and also public markets to rent for flea markets and similar events. Kranhuset, the main generator of the site, is supposed to invite the public to suggest and host workshops and other activities there, and will also be as diverse with this as the public suggests.

There are green connections from

surroundings into the development, different

layers of greenery, on ground as well as the

green roofs of the Generator and the residential

buildings.

The water is visible all over the site or less

visible under the form of water tank or rain

garden. The water bank is subject to different

experiences.

GREEN & BLUE SYSTEM

There is a gradual transition from the

private gardens to the public green areas.

The community vegetable gardens act as

social condensers for activities such as

harvesting, eating & processing. Local

vegetables can be sold in the market inside the

generator.

URBAN AGRICULTURE

The public space is organized as a big

plaza with a focal point in the Aquatic pavilion

open to the waterfront and secondary arteries

where civic interaction occurs. There is also a

“hidden city” within the Generator, with retail,

offices, market, event and other multifunction

spaces.

PUBLIC REALM

Generator

Old town

INFRASTRUCTURE

The tram will cross the development,

facilitating a better connection to the old town

and the north of western harbour, activating the

site.

This is not a car-oriented development.

Public transport is provided for the residents

and people working in the area as well as bike

lanes integrated into the Malmo cycling system.

All the public spaces are conceived as

shared spaces for pedestrian and bikers.
