New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Tan Dun Martial Arts TrilogyAcademy award-winning composer Tan Dun conducts the NZSO in a luscious and sweeping performance of his Martial Arts Trilogy. To mark the Year of the Snake and the Chinese New Year, the concert comprises Tan Dun’s scores from three classic martial arts fi lms, The Banquet, Hero, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In a multi-media event dedicated to Hollywood grandeur, scenes from the fi lms will be projected above the orchestra as they celebrate the soaring, melodramatic and spiritually transcendent martial arts that make these fi lms so powerful.Internationally acclaimed violinist Ryu Goto evokes Flying Snow, and her story of revenge and redemption; pianist Yingdi Sun, winner of the prestigious Liszt Prize, is Empress Ano, who sacrifi ces everything for power; while Tan Wei on the traditional Chinese violin erhu portrays the dreamer Lo who fi nds transcendence through martial arts. Tan Dun’s soaring, haunting and utterly thrilling music makes for a concert that is not to be missed. 7.30pm. 15 February.Venue: Civic Theatre, Queen Street, Auckland. 0800 BUY TICKETS. www.nzso.co.nz

The city’s landmark Harbour Bridge has more adventure options to tempt the daredevils, including a bridge climb and the world’s fi rst bridge bungy.

Culture vultures will fi nd themselves at home in the city’s sophisticated galleries and museums. You can browse New Zealand’s largest collection of art at the Auckland Art Gallery, view the rare Maori taonga (treasures) at Auckland Museum, go sailing on a heritage vessel at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum or ride the historic tram at MOTAT.

There are plenty of family attractions to keep you busy. Further afi eld, you’ll fi nd tranquil bushwalks, wild surf beaches, historic villages and award-winning wineries to discover.

Suspended high above Auckland City on a narrow 1.2m platform, there is only a harness between you and a sheer 192m drop on either side! Unlike other Tower walks, there is no protective railing or balcony – each walker is harnessed to an overhead railing to prevent them swinging off the edge. Daredevil walkers who take up the SkyWalk® challenge will enjoy spectacular views of Auckland’s skyline and harbour, while a guide points out the city’s famous landmarks. SkyWalk® costs NZ $145. See discount voucher, centre pages.

For detailed information on the New Zealand road code, the offi cial guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations.

Road RulesYou must be 21 to hire a rental car or mobile home, and show a current driving licence and/or an international licence. New Zealand drives on the left so remember to keep left at all times. All traffi c turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffi c on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffi c laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving• Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care

not to exceed the signed speed limits as fi nes can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor.

• If you notice traffi c building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffi c.

• Winding roads, diffi cult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200-300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions.

• Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front.• Ringing bells and fl ashing red lights at a railway crossing signal

that a train is coming. Many railway crossings are not controlled by barrier arms. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care.
