1 Scan the text. In which cities were the Olympics held in …1 1936? 3 2008?

2 1976? 4 2012?

2 Read the text and match paragraphs A–C to the headings.

A sporting future?

Politics

Ancient and modern

3 Are the sentences true (T) or false (F)? Quote words from the text to support your answers. 1 Every sport is played at the Olympics.

2 At the Berlin Games, Adolf Hitler congratulated all the winners.

3 Many countries didn’t go to the Games in 1976.

4 Saudi Arabia encourages women to play sport.

The Olympic GamesA The summer Olympic Games take place every four years. In Ancient Greece, there were only

a few events, such as running, discus, javelin, wrestling and boxing. Today, many sports are included, although the list often changes. The International Olympic Committee introduced BMX cycling at the 2008 Beijing Games but decided to take out baseball for 2012, and rugby and golf will be added at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

B Unfortunately, the modern Games have not always been about sporting achievement; politics has often made the news. There was controversy in Berlin in 1936. Germany’s leader, Adolf Hitler, would not congratulate the American medal winner Jesse Owens because he was black. Some countries have even refused to take part for political reasons. Before the Montreal Games in 1976, many African countries said they would pull out if New Zealand competed. This was because the New Zealand rugby team had toured South Africa prior to the Games. At the time, there was an international prohibition on attending sporting events in South Africa in protest against its apartheid government. In the end, 28 countries boycotted the Games.

C More recently, other issues like doping and cheating have overshadowed the Games. There were a number of protests before the 2012 Games in London because of the Saudi Arabian ban on women playing sport. Despite all these controversies, the sporting world has its eyes on the next Olympics in Rio. Politics come and go, but it seems that sport will carry on for ever.
