Hello and welcome to the latest edition of AVV. In the last month, I have experienced a couple of milestones - a big birthday, a bridesmaid dress fitting in adulthood and several hairy moments involving snow and a car!! I really can’t say that 2013 is uneventful, so bearing all that in mind, I thought I’d start AVV3, which means that we will soon be going out to over 10,000 homes in the area!

All developments on that front are planned for the next couple of months but we’re also developing the current magazines based on popular opinion. So, firstly, look at this wonderful front cover submitted by Georgia, who is a lovely local young lady. We think we have a budding photographer in our midst and would love to see photos of the surrounding area submitted by anyone and everyone who enjoys taking photographs, so please submit them to the below e-mails. Carla has also been very busy this month developing a ’useful telephone numbers’ section. If you know any numbers that you would like to see on here, then drop Carla a line. Also, we always ask for you to submit your local dog walks or recipes but just to re-iterate...this is a local magazine for your local area, so if you have something to share….please do!

Finally, we have some great offers as always, Body & Sole are on hand to blow away those winter blues with a couple of fantastic packages. Tile Town and Home2Sell are back again with an offer if you fancy giving your house a make-over or just moving house! and if you are wanting

to save some money, check out binsured on page 18.

Happy Reading,

Emily

Would you like to join the Friends of Riddings Schools PTA? We are a group of parents dedicated to raising money for the two Schools in Riddings, the Nursery and Infant School and the Junior School. We organise various events throughout the year and all the money raised goes towards supporting the Schools to enhance the children’s facilities and equipment. Unfortunately the number of members we have is going down and we need parents and carers to help organise our events. If you are interested in spending just a couple of hours a month at our meet-ings please leave your details with the School Office. If you don’t want to join the PTA but don’t mind helping on event nights then your help would also be greatly appreciated.

Book Review Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is definitely a book you can imagine being turned into a film. It may not be high art but it reads fast and keeps you gripped – maybe just the thing to distract from dark February nights.

Nick and Amy are five years married; happily it would seem, then on their wed-ding anniversary Amy goes missing amid signs of a struggle. Nick is a weak and less than brilliant husband, but you start to wonder – could he have killed her. Or is there something else going on here? What follows are Nick’s recollections of the days after the event, interspersed with sections of Amy’s diary from the begin-ning of their relationship. Bit by bit we start to find out what was going on in this marriage. Our understanding and expectations are teased along; we’re given just enough information to think we know what is happening – but do we? The inconsistencies of their narratives leave you as confused as Gillian Flynn wants you to be.

This is a smart read, with twists and turns every few pages. It may leave you feel-ing you’re glad you don’t inhabit the world of the trust fund baby - and everyone will have a different view on the ending; but as a fast and furious February page-turner, it fits the bill.

This month we head to Ambergate for a really dog friendly walk around Shining Cliff Woods. This walk is part of the Amber Valley Routeways series and is well know as the Betty Kenny Trail as the route takes you past the Betty Kenny Tree, where she was reputed to live with her family in the 17th Century and rocked her children to sleep in the branches of the tree. The woods themselves are wonderful and are a sight of special scientific interest due to the range of plants and trees that live here. If you have a favourite walk of your own why not share it with us by email at [email protected] or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638.

4 mile walk along the Betty Kenny Trail in Shining Cliff Woods, Ambergate

A lovely walk for you and your dog along a well established trail that offers a piece of local history and some lovely views across the Derwent

Valley. The route will take around 2 hours There are some moderate climbs and the terrain can be muddy and uneven so a good pair of boots

are a must. The path is well marked by posts with a white strip.

1. Park at Ambergate railway station. Parking costs £2 a day. Alternative parking is available on the roadside on Holly Lane, although space is more limited.

2. Exit the car park and walk down the road before taking the steps on your left to cut out the bend. Carry on along the road until it meets the A610. Turn left and pass under the railway bridge. When you meet the A6 turn left again and carry on along the road and when safe cross before reaching Holly Lane.

3. Take Holly Lane. After crossing the Ha’penny bridge take the turn that leads off to the right and into the woods. Carry on along this road for around 400 meters looking out for a sign on the right which indicate the Betty Kenny Trail.

4. Take the footpath and carry on through the old wire works site. As you exit you will see a sign for Shining Cliff Wood ahead.. Head towards this passing through a barrier and take the path into the woods. This path will take you roughly parallel to the A6 and the River Derwent.

5. After around 400 meters, when you reach a fork in the path keep to the right and follow the path as it goes down hill.

8. After around 800 meters follow the main path, which is marked by white striped posts, as it turns off to the left and uphill. Follow the path uphill, with the pine trees on your right.

9. As you get to the top of the hill keep your eyes peeled for a path marked by white striped posts that leads right uphill into the pine trees. Follow this path and it will wind up to the remains of the Betty Kenny Tree.

10. Follow the path marked by the white posts as it leads back down hill as it joins up with the path you left to visit the tree. This path takes you to the outskirts of the wood, which is marked by a stone wall.

11. Follow the path, over the boardwalks and continue as it climbs up through the woods. Y0u will near the edge of an old stone quarry so take care, especially if your dog is ‘enthusiastic’ as mine.

12. Carry on along the path marked by the white posts as it leads you up to the top of a hill where you have great views across the Derwent Valley. Continue on along the path downhill through the woods.

13. As the path joins a wider path and you see a sign for the YHA keep to the left. You will come to a T-junction, again turn left going downhill. This will bring you pack to where you entered the wood near the wire works, retrace the route back from here. This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who

chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the

area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Are you ready for RTI?

A major change in payroll is set to hit UK businesses in 2013. Real Time Information (RTI) represents the biggest change in payroll since the

introduction of Pay As You Earn (PAYE) in 1944.

What is RTI? RTI is a new system for reporting payroll details to HMRC. As an employer you will be responsible for all tax deductions and calculations but instead of submitting this data once a year to HMRC, you will be required to send information to HMRC about employees’ pay and deductions before or at the same time as they are paid, whether weekly, fortnightly or monthly. HMRC have now confirmed that all companies with up to 5,000 employees will need to start making RTI submissions from April 2013, with larger employers needing to comply by October 2013.

What to report RTI reports will need to be made where at least one employee is paid above the lower earnings limit (LEL), (£109 per week for 2013/14). For wages between the LEL and the Primary threshold (£149 per week for 2013/14) the worker is given NI credits although they don't actually pay any NI, so the level of their wages needs to be reported. A major difference between RTI and the current system, is that once the employer is reporting under RTI, reports must be made for each employee even if no tax or NI are deducted for a particular period. This is be-cause RTI has two functions; - to report de-ductions to HMRC and to report net pay for each worker to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to allow the DWP to calculate top-up benefits such as Tax Cred-its and the new Universal Credit. The wages for employees aged under 16 are not required to be included in the RTI re-port, unless those wages are so high that the worker will be subject to income tax. Workers aged under 16 do not pay NICs, and are not eligible to claim Tax Credits.

If you would like any further information on RTI, or to check whether you payroll software is RTI compatible, contact James Boler at Smith Craven

who can help in

relieving your pain

It’s that time of year again when we start to hear the gardening groan - not “What has happened to my garden over winter?” but rather “I was just tidying up a bit..” and the enthusiasm of getting hands covered in soil again - means overdoing it and becoming injured. We all understand how easy it is to get carried away; “I’ll just do this” or “finish that...” and suddenly an afternoon has slipped away. But before you turn your couch potato state into an edible one - consider that at this time of year gardening injuries exceed football or rugby injuries!

Warm up So perhaps it’s worth taking this form of exercise more seriously: Notably, warm up first! Some of those muscles will have degenerated in a few weeks, let alone all winter, so give them a chance to wake up and strengthen up. Make sure you are warm: stride around the garden a few times - do a few jumps, run up and down some steps - whatever warms you up, then repeat these stretches 10 times each, holding for 20 seconds each (check with your doctor if you have medical issues):

· slowly flex forward, vertebrae by vertebrae and reach for your toes, then slowly reverse this action until you are upright.

· Next, look over your right shoulder, slowly rotate your body to the right keeping pelvis and feet facing forward and repeat to the left

· Then put your right ear to your right shoulder - keeping your shoulder down, and continue to bend sideways running your hand down your leg, then repeat the opposite side.

· Lastly, look up towards the sky and arch your back backwards - hold onto something if your balance isn’t so good.

Repeat after gardening to stretch tired muscles gently. These are good basic habits whether you are a gardener or not, but getting joints free and muscles firing off just alerts your body to some of the posture strains associated with gardening. Most importantly vary your activities, have frequent rests and clear up often, so you can stop at any time without leaving a mess. And if all else fails -Come and see us!

Warm Chocolate Fondant Pudding With Molten Filling.

Ingredients

Cake mix

9oz soft butter

9oz caster sugar 4 eggs

6oz plain flour

4oz cocoa powder

Method

Make the filling first, ideally the day before you make the fondants.

Warm the cream and whisk in the broken chocolate until thick, add flavouring. Pour into a shallow container and chill until set, minimum 3 hours.

Pre heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

In a electric mixer cream the butter and sugar together till light, fluffy and almost white in colour. Add eggs 1 at a time and beat well. Sift the flour and cocoa together and add to the butter and egg mix making sure its all worked in. Transfer the mix to a piping bag.

Butter 8 dariole moulds or ramekins.

Starting at the bottom pipe the chocolate mix so it covers the bottom and then pipe around the sides till you get to the

top, making a well in the centre. Do this with all the moulds making sure you still have some mix left.

Now make a ball about the size of a marble out of the chilled molten filling mix and place in the well.

Do this with all the moulds then pipe over the top with the remaining cake mix.

Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes.

Once cooked, leave to cool slightly then gently run a knife around the edge of the mould and gently remove the cake. If still warm you can serve immediately with vanilla ice cream and seasonal berries. Alternately you can leave to completely cool then once ready to serve gently warm through on medium setting for 1-2 minutes in the microwave.

Molten Filling

9oz Dark chocolate

6fl oz Double cream 1tbsp Brandy or other flavouring

Sporting Futures and US Girls are bringing the Women and Girls of Derbyshire a multi action packed event free of charge on March 9th @ Tupton Hall.

The event is to mark the end of the US Girls funding, which has offered activities specifically for Women and Girls and has had a huge impact on the number of Women and Girls taking part in Sport and Physical Activity all over the Country.

The day is also linked into International Womens Day supported by Oxfam and Women and Girls are being asked to drop off any unwanted BRAS at the event. These BRAS will be sent to Women and Girls in Third World Countries. Bras are the one of

the most expensive things to buy in these countries and as a result many Women and Girls go without.

The event boasts to be an action packed and most of all FUN day, with over 12 different sports and activities to try such as Zumba, Pink Punch, Hoola Fitness and Netball. You can also make you own Smoothie whilst riding a bicycle and have a go on the inflatable obstacle course. Come down, have a look and show your support for Women and Girls Everywhere. Please contact Sporting Futures on 01773 841 645 for more information.

Top Tip Deadheading doesn’t just work on summer flowering plants. Keep lopping the tops off winter pansies to produce more blooms.

Assuming you can tear yourself away from the plant catalogues which keep flying through the letterbox, there’s surprisingly lots to do this month.

Snowdrops are just about up and flowering. But to give an even bigger display next year, lift and divide once the

flowers have finished. Bluebell and dog’s tooth violet also respond well to being moved in leaf.

Buddleia and summer flowering clematis can be pruned. Buddleia to about a foot, clematis to within a couple of buds

of old wood.

Dahlia tubers and gladioli corms can be coaxed into life. Place both (corms in seed trays) in a light warmish (around 10+C) place to sprout. Potatoes can be chitted in a light cool place, with the end showing most buds uppermost (egg box works well for

this). They’ll be ready for planting in March when sprouts are 1” long.

DVD Review - Looper (15)

As a fan of science fiction, both in film and

literature, I’m well aware of the adage ‘there are

no new stories left to tell’ and when it comes to

time travel storylines I was definitely starting to

feel like this was the case. So when I saw Looper

come out at the cinema I let it pass me by, only

realising afterwards that it was the third film

from Writer and Director Rian Johnson, who

was responsible for the highly original cult

classic Brick (also starring Joseph Gordon-

Levitt). As with Brick Johnson brings a

genuinely original approach to the time travel

story and again he has created a film

of real charisma and class.

Set in a dystopian future, where crime

barons run cities, the basic plot is quite

complex. Another thirty years into the

future murder is impossible to conceal.

So when organised criminals want to

dispose of someone they use illegal

time travel to send them back to 2044,

where a ‘Looper’ such as Joe (Joseph

Gordon-Levitt) is waiting. The Loopers job is

easy, they get paid handsomely to kill and

dispose of the body. That is until the day their

loop is closed and their future self is sent back

for them to dispose of for one final payday.

However, when Joe’s future self is sent back,

things don’t go to plan.

Johnson is clever to draw out the dilemma that

faces young Joe as the plot develops; first about

how to deal with his future self but then later as

he faces a much greater decision that will affect

the future of everybody. This has shades of

classic sci-fi, which often deals with questions

over how individuals and society as a whole will

deal with the situations and moral questions

created by future technology. At its best sci-fi is

a genre that makes you think but too often these

days it soon denigrates into a vehicle for CGI

and 3D special effects, fortunately Looper uses

these devices sparingly, focussing

instead on delivering on a solid plot and

script with great performances.

Gordon-Levitt continues to impress. He

plays his roles intelligently and he

seems to have that ability to connect

with an audience, giving his characters

emotional depth with notable subtlety.

And if you’re wondering why he looks

a bit strange in this film, apparently he

spent 3 hours a day getting prosthetics and make

-up to his nose, eyebrow line and lip curl to

make him look more like a younger version of

Bruce Willis, who also delivers a good perfor-

mance as the ‘old Joe’

Swanwick & Riddings Safer Neighbourhood update

Your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team includes PC Chris Anthony (top left), PCSO Chris Bannister (top right), PCSO Mark Rogers (bottom left) and PCSO Richard Plant (bottom right). We are part of the Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and we cover the Swanwick, Somercotes, Lea-brooks and Pye Bridge area. Every three months we hold a meet-ing to bring together partner agencies and the local community to set local priorities and discuss concerns. They involve the po-lice, the councils, fire service, housing associations and many oth-ers who can all work to address the issues that matter the most to the community.

Our current priorities are to target anti-social behaviour in the Somercotes area through increased patrols, informing parents of any nuisance behaviour and agreeing acceptable behaviour contracts with young people involved in anti-social behaviour. We are also looking to help prevent and reduce non-dwelling burglaries, by visiting local shops and raising awareness of the issue and carrying out regular police patrols.

For more information on our current priorities, meetings or news from our team visit the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk. You can also contact us by calling 101, the non emergency number for Derbyshire police, or emailing: [email protected].

I've spent a bit of time in the last couple of weeks in both Ripley and Alfreton, it's only when you take a step back that you realise what's happening to our High Streets. It's true what a lot of people say, they are full of pound shops, Oxfam's' and empty pubs. There are a lot of chains that have recently closed down, like Blockbuster, now the last time I went in there, they were still renting videos, so I'm not surprised that they've closed. I never went into a Jessops, but did sometimes visit HMV. The internet probably did for HMV, but they did have a failed business model, who in their right mind would hope to be successful by paying its taxes and employing people who seemed to enjoy customer interaction. A far better strategy would have been to do what Amazon do, don't employ shop assistants and don't pay any tax. Woolworths couldn't seem to work out what they were trying to sell and Peacock's just had a crap name. Apparently all this will enable specialist shops to fill the void, I think we'll just see more cheap shops selling cheap stuff. Which brings me to my rant, stop moaning about shops closing and go and visit them. There'll be plenty more shops to close, but I doubt if one of them will be Tesco. The opening of the Alfreton store, whilst not fully

to blame, must have had a detrimental effect on the small shops in the town. How can they compete with the buying power of the supermarket who have now added Dessert Orchid burgers to their 'value range'. You can't blame Tesco though, they seem able to go to any length to trade in stable conditions, whilst the unbridled joy of their check out staff seems to bring the punters in. They've also decided that to provide a quicker service it would be a good idea to change the name of Tesco express to Pony express. And finally the two events that tell us that spring is getting closer, Valentine's Day has been and gone, how many of you foolish and deluded fools were left disappointed with the chocolates and jokey card? Just remember though, that Clinton's cards was another store that ceased trading so that sexy myste-rious stranger might well have bought your card from Tesco's, which is just so romantic. Better than a service station I suppose. Far more importantly the second sign is the six nation's rugby - Gird your loins, spring is in the air.

In case you missed the news during 2012 ...why not have a read of our very own controversial Gary who gives you the headlines of 2012, not before he has a bit of a rant about diets and exercise! If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact either Emily on info@ambervalley voice.co.uk or 01773 604178/ 07891 639638 or Carla on [email protected], 07896294512.
