WHAT IS MASS SPECTROMETRY?

Mass Spec uses MASS to separate the ionized sample.

Each chemical produces a unique mass spectrum to positively identify it, and alarm only if appropriate.

MASS SPECTROMETRY - THE GOLD STANDARDThere is a reason labs use Mass Spec – it’s the best

Aviation Security would have specified Mass Spec for ETD after 9/11 But, MS was too big, too slow, too complex, and too expensive IMS was chosen as a faster, less expensive, less specific

compromise. Original substance list was a “What can IMS find?”, not a “What threats do

we have?” list False Alarm Rate of IMS was tolerated, as a trade off for speed and

economics.

It’s time to come back to Mass Spec for Aviation Security

Page 5: AVSEC WORLD 2019 INNOVATION WORKSHOP...MASS SPECTROMETRY - THE GOLD STANDARD There is a reason labs use Mass Spec – it’s the best Aviation Security would have specified Mass Spec

• Small footprint

• Low-cost

• Simple to use

• Fast analysis time

• Gold-standard specificity

• Virtually unlimited threat library

• Higher uptime and availability

• Near-zero false alarm rate

• Lower total cost of ownership

• Increased passenger throughput

Both Mass Spec & IMS

IMS VS MS

Page 6: AVSEC WORLD 2019 INNOVATION WORKSHOP...MASS SPECTROMETRY - THE GOLD STANDARD There is a reason labs use Mass Spec – it’s the best Aviation Security would have specified Mass Spec

IMS produces one peak per threat compound.

MS produces multiple peaks per compound

Detecting multiple peaks significantly reduces false alarms (to near-zero).

IMS MS

IMS VS MS – SPECIFICITY

TNT

Page 7: AVSEC WORLD 2019 INNOVATION WORKSHOP...MASS SPECTROMETRY - THE GOLD STANDARD There is a reason labs use Mass Spec – it’s the best Aviation Security would have specified Mass Spec

IMS ETDs are notorious for identifying everyday substances as TNT, generating false alarms.

In contrast, MS ETDs detect threats in the presence of confusants due to their high specificity.

VS

IMS MS

IMS VS MS – DETECTION WITH CONFUSANTS

• Astrotech’s team developed a miniature mass spectrometer (MS) for NASA to monitor air quality on the International Space Station

ABOUT 1ST DETECT An Astrotech Company (NASDAQ: ASTC)

• Founded in 1984, Astrotech provided space habitat and microgravity experimentation equipment & services to NASA during the space shuttle era

• Astrotech officially incorporated 1st Detect to commercialize the MS technology for terrestrial applications

• Ever since, 1st Detect has been revolutionizing the mass spectrometry industry with the same high quality as laboratory mass spectrometers – but in a functional size and at a lower price

Page 9: AVSEC WORLD 2019 INNOVATION WORKSHOP...MASS SPECTROMETRY - THE GOLD STANDARD There is a reason labs use Mass Spec – it’s the best Aviation Security would have specified Mass Spec

• Swab-based trace explosives & narcotics detector

• Outperforms the ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) detectors currently deployed in airports

• Better specificity, with a near-zero FAR

• Lower operational costs. (labor costs, pulled bags, delayed flights)

• Fewer passengers inconvenienced = more retail revenue

• Meets all known and proposed TSA and ECAC detection requirements. (w/ no FAR penalty to add new compounds)

• The first MS-based ETD to be ECAC Certified for Passenger and Cargo

PRODUCT STATUS

Page 14: AVSEC WORLD 2019 INNOVATION WORKSHOP...MASS SPECTROMETRY - THE GOLD STANDARD There is a reason labs use Mass Spec – it’s the best Aviation Security would have specified Mass Spec

• Fully-automated explosives & narcotics detection for use in airports, air cargo facilities, mailing facilities, and more

• Compliant interior sampling

• Non-contact ETD for use in airports, critical government and public buildings

• Integration with baggage screening devices enables 100% of bags to be screened for explosives

• TRACER 1000 ETD Emerging Threat Library for use in airports, compliant with all proposed ECAC and TSA standards.

• Library can be expanded with no False Alarm penalty, unlike IMS

PRODUCT ROADMAP

Page 15: AVSEC WORLD 2019 INNOVATION WORKSHOP...MASS SPECTROMETRY - THE GOLD STANDARD There is a reason labs use Mass Spec – it’s the best Aviation Security would have specified Mass Spec

• Mass Spec is superior to IMS

• The TRACER 1000 is the firstCertified MS-based ETD

(ECAC Passenger and Cargo)

• The future of Explosive Trace Detection Reliability – Superior uptime with fewer

“bench units” required than IMS

Accuracy - Near-zero false alarms with enhanced detection capabilities

Efficiency - Faster throughput, easy to use, lower cost of ownership
