Avocado for Your Baby -Introducing Avocado Baby Food Recipes

Avocado makes a great first food for baby due to its texture and creaminess; an extra bonus is that

avocado is full or "good" fats and has a high nutrient content!

The Goodness of Avocado for your baby:

Avocados are often called one of nature's perfect foods because they are said to contain everything

a person needs to survive. A wonderful "good fat" food for baby's brain and physical development,

try an avocado as baby's first food instead of refined cereals.

"Sodium- and cholesterol- free, avocados contain valuable nutrients including 8% of the

recommended Daily Value (DV) for folate; 4% DV for fiber and potassium, 4% DV for vitamin E; and

2% DV for iron. A serving of avocado also contains 81 micrograms of the carotenoid lutein and 19

micrograms of beta-carotene. Per serving, avocados have 3.5 grams of unsaturated fats, which are

known to be important for normal growth and development of the central nervous system and

    brain."http://www.avocado.org/healthy_living/nutrition.php

Florida vs. Haas Avocado - which avocado is best for your baby?

When can I introduce Avocado to my baby?

Avocado is a wonderful first food for baby. An avocado is smooth and

creamy when mashed - a perfect food that will be more readily accepted as baby begins solids.

Avocado may be offered as early as 4 - 6 months old. Babies need carbohydrates, and fats as well as

proteins for their growth during the crucial first year and even into the second year.As you begin to introduce a wide variety of foods, you will find that mashing an avocado and mixing

with applesauce, peaches or pears, bananas and even yogurt make a wonderful meal or snack.

Yes, Avocados are full of fat! Don't worry about the fat content of an avocado, babies should NOT

be on a "low fat" diet. Babies need fat in their diets for proper growht and brain development/

Please disregard any advice to not feed avocados because they are high in fats. If you have any

doubts, as always we recommend you consult your pediatrician.

Avocados are high in monounsaturated fat, that's the good kind of fat! A medium size avocado

contains approximately 322 calories and up to 30 grams of fat - WOW. 1 cup of avocado puree

contains almost 700 calories as it would take approximately 2 avocados to make a cup. The benefits

of avocados far outweigh the "risks".

Avocados have been associated with Latex allergies and sensitivities so ask your pediatrician

about introducing bananas to your baby if there is a history of Latex issues.

How to select the perfect Avocado for baby food

According to theEWG,avocados are one of the 15 foods least contaminated withpesticides so purchasing organic is your choice.

When selecting an Avocado, you want a dark green color with bumpy texture. The fruit should be

firm yet yielding when gently pushed.

When an avocado is sliced in half, the flesh color should be a green that gently transforms into a

    buttery yellow around the pit.

The best way to cook Avocados for Baby Food

Avocado is one of the easiest foods to prepare for homemade baby food because you don't have to

cook it! Avocados are served fresh from their peels. There is no need to cook avocados for baby or

adult. Give an avocado a gentle roll around your counter to help separate the meat from the shell

    before you slice.

How to Freeze Avocados for Baby Food:

I freeze in avocado in slices. For the babies, I take out a slice, mash it up and then serve. The

browning of the avocado seemed to be less than when I mashed/pureed it and then froze it.

You can also create a bath of:

    * 1/2 cup water and

    * 2 squeezes-drips of lemon juice

Bathing the slices in mixture will help to retard browning.

Dip the slices in the bath mix then set on a baking sheet that has been covered in parchment paper.

Transfer the sheet to the freezer and allow to freeze. Once frozen, transfer the avocado slices to

    freezer bags.

**But you may not want to feedcitrusor acidic fruits to a baby before 1 yr particularly if your babygets rashy from other foods. Using a drip or 2 of lemon juice in a puree or to bathe several avocado

slices is not the same as pureeing up a few orange slices and serving them.

A Few Basic Avocado Baby Food Recipes:

    Baby's Mashed Avocado

Peel and de-pit a ripe avocado

Cut meat out and mash with a fork

There should be no need to use a machine as just like bananas, avocados have a very soft

consistency and texture. Avocados do not need to be cooked.

    Creamy Banana-Cado Baby Food

Peel and de-pit a ripe avocado

Cut meat out and mash with a fork

    Peel and mash 1 banana

Learn all about Carrots and try some Carrot baby food recipe ideas.

When can I introduce Carrots to my baby?Carrots may be introduced between 6 and 8 months of age. As always, I recommend thatyou thoroughly discuss any feeding issues with your pediatrician as generalities may notapply to your child.Goodness of CarrotsCarrots are very high in beta carotene. Beta carotene is a Carotenoid. Carotenoid are a set

of darkly colored pigments called pro vitamin A carotenoids that can be converted toVitamin A. Vitamin A is very important in a developing infant's diet.Carrots are often one of baby's first food. They are easy to digest and are packed full ofnutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Calcium.Due to the issue of Nitrates, recommendations for the introduction of carrots varies. I havefound that more often than not, the recommendation for introducing carrots is between 7and 8 months old. Again, please see theNitratesarticle for more in-depth information.CARROTS:(half cup steamed)

    VITAMINS:Vitamin A - 13286 IUVitamin C - 1.8 mg

    Niacin - .4 mgFolate - 11 mcgPantothenic Acid - .2 mgVitamin B6 - .2 mg

Contains some other vitaminsin small amounts

    MINERALS:

    Potassium - 177 mg

    Sodium - 51.5 mgCalcium - 24 mgPhosphorus - 23.4 mgMagnesium - 10 mgIron - .48 mg

Also contains small amounts of selenium, manganese, copper and zinc.

How to select and store the perfect carrots for homemade baby food

According to theEWG,carrots are not one of the "dirty dozen" foods that are

most highly contaminated with pesticides - purchasing organic is a personal choice.Select and store carrotsWhen purchasing carrots, look for those with minimal sprouting at the top. In other words, ifthe carrot has started to grow, it has been sitting around for quite some time. Also look forlittle "hairs" growing along the carrot. This also indicates the carrot is growing and hasprobably been sitting around for awhile. The best way to preserve the flavor, crispness, and beta-carotene content in carrots is torefrigerate them.

Is it a good idea to use "baby carrots"?Baby carrots are the product of modern technology and are specially formed by a machinethat cuts them out from full sized older carrots. Some growers add green food coloring at

the stem for further effect. One way to tell if a baby carrot is truly a baby carrot is to readits packaging. The common baby carrots sold in the grocery store will actually say babycut carrots.Baby cut carrots are cleansed in a solution that often contains chlorine so that they will notturn white while in the package. Skip these carrots and opt to peel and cut your own, especially if you will be making carrot baby food!

Steaming Carrots allows the beta carotene to be more bio-available and readily used by thebody. Add a wee bit of butter to help better absorb the vitamin A.Carrots should be peeled when making baby food pures as many infants will not be able todigest the skins. Unless you are purchasing Organic carrots, you should always peel carrotsas chemicals do concentrate in the skin of the carrot. If you do not buy Organic carrots, please cleanse the carrots by using a vegetable brush and lightly scrubbing the carrotsunder cool running water.

Should I Puree Or Mash The Food For My 6 to 9 Month Baby?At around 7-8 months, your baby may have a tooth or two. This varies a great deal, though, fromchild to child - some get their teeth earlier, while others remain delightfully gummy through most oftheir first year.Once teeth appear, you can try mashing food instead of pureeing it, as your baby should then be

able to handle soft lumps. But some babies seem to manage quite well by mashing food with theirgums alone, so it isnotabsolutely necessary to wait for teeth. We introduced lumpier food to ourbabies when they were around 7 months old - three had teeth, one didn't, but they all seemed tocope well.

Introducing lumpy foodsJust remember to watch your baby carefully when you change the texture of his food - as he

becomes accustomed to small, soft lumps, then go from mashing to finely chopping the food.Youknow what's best for your baby, so take things at his pace, but do try to encouragechewing and don't stick to pureed foods for too long. Our youngest child was incredibly lazy when it came to chewing! It was very tempting to stick withpureed food, knowing she'd eat it rather than spit out every tiny lump. But we persisted, andeventually she got the hang of it. So be patient, and keep trying!

How Many Times A Day Should I Give Solid Food To My 6 To 9Month Baby?

At 6 months, this may only be once or twice a day. Many parents find that, by 9 months, their babies have settled into a

pattern of having 3 meals a day. But all babies are different and this maynot suit your child... so lethimguide you - you'll be able to tell when it'stime to increase his intake of solid foods.

How much should my baby be eating?Remember, though, that milk is averyimportant part of your 6 to 9 monthbaby's diet, and you shouldn't aim to replace it with solid food at this

stage. Try giving your baby half his milkbeforehis solid food and half afterwards. Towards the end ofhis first year, you may find that your baby begins to refuse the second half of his milk. And so this isthe time to think about dropping a feed or two.

When Should I Introduce A Cup To My 6 To 9 Month Baby? You can tryintroducing a "sippy" cupat about 7 months. Wefound it hard to find the perfect cup at this age - the spill-proofvarieties seemed to require quite vigorous sucking and I think ourbabies were just too lazy to oblige! We ended up using a free-flowing spouted cup. Our baby could drinkmore easily, but babies have a tendency to shake things up anddown - hence we all had a shower every mealtime.

Whichever type you choose, our advice is to STICK TO WATER as a main drink for as long as youcan. If a baby has never had juice, then he won't know what he's missing and he'll be perfectlysatisfied with good old water! Once he's tried juice, he'll never look at water in the same way again.

And that's a shame - the benefits of plenty of water are well known to us all!

When should I give my baby water? If you really want to give your baby juice, then ONLY give it in a cup, never a bottle. Dentists agreethat the sugar in the juice does more harm when the teeth are "bathed" in juice from a bottle.
