Avigel Cold Applied Strippable Coatings General: Avigel strippable coating is designed for application to metal surfaces. They form tough and tenaciously adhering films, giving outstanding protection from corrosion and also from damage arising from handling, manufacturing processes and transport. When no longer required, the coatings can be stripped as continuous films. Avigel strippable coatings are permanently thermoplastic, non flammable and do not age, discolour or oxidise. They are waterproof and also resistant to attack by a very wide range of acids, alkalis and many industrial solvents. Avigel may be applied to metal of all kinds - ferrous, non ferrous or precious to glass and most other kinds of smooth surface. They should, however, not be applied to painted, enamelled or lacquered surfaces, as the solvents used in them may attack such surfaces. Examples of the application of Avigel: Protection of metal parts and machined components. Protection of plated goods. Masking medium for plating baths. Protection of stainless steel surfaces. Protection of refrigerator parts and outer cases. Protection of sheet metal during punching, stamping and assembly. Protection of glass, mirrors etc. Protection of porcelain and glazed earthenware during transport. Protection of aircraft, motor vehicle and electrical parts. Avigel is extensively used in the assembly and maintenance of aircraft for the protection of the polished metal comprising the fuselage etc., alternatively, it is applied after the components have been made, for protection during transport. The Avigel is applied to the surface of parts to be protected before fabrication has begun and the coatings are left on during all the stamping, forming, drawing and assembly operations. The coatings prevent damage or scratching to the surface and at the desired stage can be removed by peeling off in continuous films leaving smooth, grease-free surfaces. Application: When applied by brush, the material should not be applied too thinly as subsequent stripping may be difficult if the film is less than 25 microns thick. If Avigel is sprayed, two coats should be applied in order to attain the requisite minimum thickness. The second coat may be sprayed on immediately - there is no need to wait for the first coat to dry. Properties Chemical Resistance Protects the surface from all forms of corrosion. Films are permanently waterproof and have a remarkably low water vapour transmission. Avigel is unaffected by the following for an indefinite period : Water and Sea Water. Chlorine and Bromine. Silver Nitrate. Alcohols. Alkalis. Hydrogen Peroxide. Corrosive Fumes. Fungi, Moulds and Bacteria. Mineral Acids even at high concentration. Mineral and Vegetable Oils, Fats, Greases and Wax. Extremes of climatic temperature, from tropical heat to arctic cold. Potassium Permanganate and Potassium Dichromate. Aliphatic Hydrocarbons. Heat Resistance Will begin to soften at approx 60°C but regain normal hardness upon cooling. Maximum temperature the films tolerate is 120°C at which point they will begin to decompose but not burn. Stability Completely stable. Will not age, perish, crack, wrinkle or blister. The water-clear forms permanently maintain their clarity and do not yellow with time. Electrical Properties Very good electrical insulating properties. Stripping When necessary, Avigel coating can be stripped in a continuous film from the surface to which it has been applied. Lift a corner of the film and pull steadily off the whole of the surface which will then be left clean and free from oil and grease. If any difficulty in stripping is encountered i.e. the adhesion of the coating to the surface is greater than the cohesion of the film itself, an additional coating should be given to the existing coating and allowed to dry, when it will be found that the film thus strengthened will strip readily. Condition Ready for use direct from can. Storage Life Avigel has an indefinite shelf life if stored in a closed container. There is no sedimentation and it does not form a skin on the surface. Touch Dry Approx 10 minutes. Drying can be speeded up if dried in warm air. Coverage 12m² per litre @ 25 microns. Pack Sizes 5 and 25 litres. Colour Range Clear, Blue and Green. Health and Safety: When using liquid materials it must be noted that this product has a flash point below 23°C (petroleum mixtures giving off inflammable heavy vapours), and should only be used away from possible sources of ignition. The vapours or liquid must not under any circumstances be allowed to contact red hot surfaces or naked lights. Attention must be given to industrial hygiene, extraction of vapours and fire precautions. Personnel should be informed of handling requirements. Cold Applied Strippable Coatings

General: Avigel strippable coating is designed for application to metal surfaces. They form tough and tenaciously adhering films, giving outstanding protection from

corrosion and also from damage arising from handling, manufacturing processes and transport. When no longer required, the coatings can be stripped as continuous

films. Avigel strippable coatings are permanently thermoplastic, non flammable and do not age, discolour or oxidise. They are waterproof and also resistant to attack

by a very wide range of acids, alkalis and many industrial solvents.

Avigel may be applied to metal of all kinds - ferrous, non ferrous or precious to glass and most other kinds of smooth surface. They should, however, not be applied to

painted, enamelled or lacquered surfaces, as the solvents used in them may attack such surfaces.

Examples of the application of Avigel:

Protection of metal parts and machined components.

Avigel is extensively used in the assembly and maintenance of aircraft for the protection of the polished metal comprising the fuselage etc., alternatively, it is applied

after the components have been made, for protection during transport. The Avigel is applied to the surface of parts to be protected before fabrication has begun and the

coatings are left on during all the stamping, forming, drawing and assembly operations. The coatings prevent damage or scratching to the surface and at the desired

stage can be removed by peeling off in continuous films leaving smooth, grease-free surfaces.

Application: When applied by brush, the material should not be applied too thinly as subsequent stripping may be difficult if the film is less than 25 microns thick. If

Avigel is sprayed, two coats should be applied in order to attain the requisite minimum thickness. The second coat may be sprayed on immediately - there is no need

to wait for the first coat to dry.

    Properties

Chemical Resistance Protects the surface from all forms of corrosion.

Mineral and Vegetable Oils,

Fats, Greases and Wax. Extremes of climatic temperature, from tropical heat to arctic cold. Potassium Permanganate and Potassium

    Dichromate. Aliphatic Hydrocarbons.

Heat Resistance Will begin to soften at approx 60C but regain normal hardness upon cooling. Maximum temperature the films tolerate is 120C at which

point they will begin to decompose but not burn.

Stability Completely stable. Will not age, perish, crack, wrinkle or blister. The water-clear forms permanently maintain their clarity and do not yellow

    with time.

Electrical Properties Very good electrical insulating properties.

Stripping When necessary, Avigel coating can be stripped in a continuous film from the surface to which it has been applied. Lift a corner of the film

and pull steadily off the whole of the surface which will then be left clean and free from oil and grease. If any difficulty in stripping is

encountered i.e. the adhesion of the coating to the surface is greater than the cohesion of the film itself, an additional coating should be given

to the existing coating and allowed to dry, when it will be found that the film thus strengthened will strip readily.

Condition Ready for use direct from can.
