AVE1110_ABCCarpet.indd 1 10/15/10 5:38 PM
In my early twenties, when I was still somewhat confusedabout my future, my stepmother suggested I consider a jobin advertising sales. I had never heard of this profession, butI trusted her and loved the idea of working at a magazine.Through her I found a headhunter who promptly sent me out
on my first interview with Judith Price, who was the founder andthen-publisher of AVENUE magazine. I am not quite sure why, givenmy utter lack of experience, but she hired me. Thus began my first10-year stint at AVENUE.The following Monday I was given instructions to meet Mrs. Price
at the Regency Hotel for a 7:30 breakfast. I wore what I thought wasthe perfect outfit: a Perry Ellis blue wrap maxi skirt with an argylevest (oye!). Thus began my education. As I glanced at the menu,I was told in no uncertain terms that “we do not actually eatbreakfast,” that in the home of the “power breakfast” we were hereto do business. Message received . . .From the Regency, Mrs. Price walked me across the street to the
store that defined elegance, Martha, the ultimate boutique. Here Ithought I was chic; I was way off. What a first day. This was the firstof many shopping expeditions as one of “the AVENUE girls,” as wewere known then. Mrs. Price imposed a very a strict dress code:skirts or dresses only, preferably above the knee, hose, heels andsalon-perfect hair—very “Mad Men.” To help us along, we would takea twice-annual trip to a designer of her choice—Herrera or CarolyneRoehm—where we were given a presentation and allowed to choosethree dresses per season. Oh, the ease of dressing in a couture uniform.Properly attired, we entertained clients on three martini-lunches
at Le Cirque. I was never much of a drinker, but the rule was if theydrank, you drank. This was how I learned, also from Judy Price, toalways end the meal with a double espresso. It all sounds very glam, but we worked hard and learned at
the foot of the master. In the mid-’90s, I moved on to othermagazines—and left a piece of myself behind. That is why when I gota phone call offering me the opportunity to come back as publisherof AVENUE almost 10 years ago, I jumped.I am so proud of the job that we have all done to bring AVENUE
into the 21st century. AVENUE is not only a piece of me, but of all ofour readers and devoted advertisers. Thank you to the Tiffanys, theSeaman Scheppses, the Chanels, all of the real estate communityand so many more who have stuck by us through these 35 years.I raise a martini glass to you all.

T wo things I fell in love with a long timeago: A good story and a good party. Theissue you are holding in your hands—the35th anniversary edition of AVENUE—isboth. It’s a celebration and a look back at
35 phenomenal years of chronicling New York’s sociallife. It’s a gathering of people we have enjoyed, coveredand loved, whose voices and photos once again fill ourpages with grace and laughter. No one can go to every party, of course. And not
everyone was around back in the heyday of Studio 54,Xenon, Regine’s and other ‘70s hot spots. But if youhappened to have missed the party, the next best thingis to hear about it from the mouth of a friend and a greatstoryteller. In this issue, we have raconteurs aplenty, doing what Barry Diller cleverly calls “reminiscening.”Bob Colacello and Peggy Siegal talk about unforgettableStudio 54 nights. Boaz Mazur tells a tale aboutElizabeth Taylor flopping on the floor at Regine’s.Ex-“Page Six” chronicler Richard Johnson weighs in witha tale of the tape: a fake boxing match between TakiTheodoracopulus and Count Roffredo Gaetani, completewith after-party at Mortimer’s.
AVENUE was born in a storied time. America wascelebrating its bicentennial, the summer of ’77 was aboutto unfold, Studio 54 was opening. The beginning ofAVENUE was a story itself. Founder Judy Price tells it inthese pages, and John Loring, Tiffany’s design directoremeritus, tells the story of how Tiffany becameAVENUE’s first advertiser, hence a magazine—with legs,as it turns out—was born.We had such a good time putting this issue together.
I’ve been happily editing this book for just about six ofthose 35 years, and helping produce this issue—a teameffort as always—and the oral history that weavesthrough our “35 on Thirty-five” feature story has been ahighlight. Special thanks to the fabulous Mary Hilliard forher photo retrospective of great parties “on the avenue.”And many thanks to you for reading us, supporting usand regaling us with your stories all these years.

I’ve been to amarvelous party. In fact, during the yearsI photographed social events for AVENUE,I went to a lot of marvelous parties—hundredsactually. Many I had completely forgotten about until
I started to look over my saved copies of the magazine. It’sfascinating to see these pictures again. Some people, I’veforgotten all about—I think,“Oh, I wonder whatever happenedto them . . .” Others are still out and about, albeit often withchanged names and even more times with changed faces!

Even without a photo prompt, some stand out . . . Peter Marino’s 15thbirthday party for his West Highland terrier, Ziggy—Andy Warhol broughthis camera instead of a dog. An opening night of the New York Philharmonicwhen Karen LeFrak, à la Cinderella, arrived at Lincoln Center in an opencarriage drawn by a pair of white horses. Another Cinderella moment at theSave Venice Ball where Gloria von Thurn und Taxis appeared in a pink-and-blue striped, flounced confection of a dress—the height of the poufera . . . Christian Lacroix designed the costumes for theballet and many of the guests also wore Lacroixcreations. Chairman Blaine Trump, (rushed, excited, nervous?) arrived in mismatched shoes. Then there was the Creo Society gala held in the
U.N. General Assembly Hall, where I took one ofmy favorite pictures of Kenny Lane and NanKempner. I think I’ve been to every MCNYparty, always masterminded by Mark Gilbertson.

WORTH?passing down your values as well as your assets
How is worth measured? Is it simply total assets minus total liabilities? At U.S. Trust, we believe affl uence should be measured not only by net worth, but by the things in life that
take on a worth all their own. And we apply our intellectual resources and fi nancial acumen toward helping clients realize that worth. Because we believe you deserve more than wealth

I remember the first of many Fêtes deFamille. Glenn Bernbaum, proprietor ofMortimer’s Restaurant, managed to have theadjacent street closed and tented for the party. He arranged a cabaret inside the restaurantand Robert Caravaggi and his band entertainedone year. Another year, it was Peter Allen atthe piano.I also went to all the Central Park
Conservancy lunches. One year, three ladiesarrived in the same Adolfo suit and I took theirpicture together, of course.New Yorkers wore their best jewelry to the
Tiffany’s 150th anniversary celebration at theMet Museum. There was an enormous cake, but despite the rumors, Madonna neverpopped out of it.I went to Met opera opening nights, CFDA
Awards dinners and Met Museum CostumeInstitute Galas orchestrated by Pat Buckleyand Blaine Trump, long before Anna Wintourtook over. In the ’80s, the New York socialworld seemed smaller and more intimate, everyone knew everyone and kept showing upat party after party, night after night. Therewere also fewer photographers coveringthe scene so it was much easier to capturespontaneous and candid snaps.I’ve been to a lot of parties—and what swell
parties they were. —Mary Hilliard

Let’s face it, money on its own is dumb. It can’t decide where it wants to be, change its focus, or follow a trend. On the other hand, people who have amassed a vast amount of money have done so by applying their best thinking to the process. Those smart enough to accumulate wealth tend to understand the intricacies of maintaining it. They understand that there is a significant difference between simply investing and truly managing assets.
It goes without saying that recent events have made it harder than ever to accomplish that. Smart people soon realize that they need the right partner to help them maintain and grow their fortunes. We know, because many of them are fi nding their way to us at Bessemer.
Smart people do their research. And no doubt they are encouraged by the fact that at Bessemer, we invest our clients’ money right alongside our own. Our teams include some of the brightest and most sophisticated minds in the business today, from investments to taxation to inheritance, and even philanthropy. We’re continuously analyzing the volatile financial landscape that now exists, and making longer-term forecasts while seizing shorter-term opportunities.
Of course, smart people tend to know that good business partnerships, based on trust, integrity, and mutual interest, are rare. So if, as the old adage says, you believe in following the “smart money,” there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing you.
Go ahead, ask us some tough questions. We understand. After all, that would be the smart thing to do. Call us or visit www.bessemer.com. Minimum relationship $10 million.

R. Couri Hay reflects on 35 fabulouslysuccessful years in New York and how he cultivated a

Society columnist, television reporter, PRguru—these are some of the hats R. Couri Haydons from his seat atop the junction ofManhattan social life and business. But anyone
who knows Hay well knows that, above all, he likes to have fun.Hay’s history as a New Yorker reads like a who’s who of
bold-faced names, luxury brands and cultural institutions.Hisfirst foray behind the city’s oft-closed doors was in the early’70s at AndyWarhol’s InterviewMagazine, where Hay workedalongside Bob Colacello as a contributing editor. “On theshuttle from Washington, D.C., I literally trippedoverWarren Beatty and interviewed him mid-flight,”Hay tells me, evoking the image of a surprisedcelebrity cornered by a young reporter. Other bignames followed, including Princess Grace, MarleneDietrich, Ginger Rogers and Bette Davis. “I went tothe Waynflete School with Bette’s son, MichaelMerrill,” Hay remembers. “My mother and Bettewent to our first grade play to cheer us on. We werebugs—no leads, no affinity for the stage,” he laughs.Later, Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn intro-
duced Hay to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She askedhim to help draw young people to the American BalletTheater. So in 1987,Hay formed the company’s JuniorCouncil, asking pals Anne Hearst, Cornelia Guest andCount Erik Wachtmeister to join him as co-chairs oftheir annual gala. “Jackie was ABT’s Honorary Chairand Pat Buckley and Nan Kempner were the chairs,”Hay recalls. “Blaine Trump joined them later and stillcarries the torch today with Caroline Kennedy.”“In those days, society didn’t hire press agents,”Hay
continues. “The chairs were expected to do it all, which was one of the reasons friendships flourished betweenhigh society columnists like Eugenia Sheppard and AileenMehle and publicists like George Trescher, who advised BrookeAstor.”Although Hay didn’t know it at the time, these were theroots of his career in public relations. So, how did he attract thebudding socialites to the ballet? “The leadership of the commit-
tee and the power of the party,”Hay says. A glamorous openingnight draws the A-list, which generates publicity, awareness andmoney. Hay inherently understood these relationships, eventhough he didn’t yet have the experience to affirm it.In the ’80s, Hay helped plan the parties at Studio 54 after
Mark Fleischman traded the Morgan Hotel to Steve Rubelland Ian Schrager for the legendary club. Then, in the ’90s,Hay became a partner in the supper club Tatou, whichquickly became the place to be. It didn’t take him long torealize that his experiences as a writer for Town & Country
and People and as the society editor of Hamptons Magazinehad taught him what stories the media wanted. So he did thelogical thing and, in 1990, started his own company: R. CouriHay Creative Public Relations. “I think outside the box, morelike a pentagram,” he chuckles. “It’s my job to make people’sdreams come true.”

luncheons in the ’80s, honoring everyone from TabHunter to his friends Barbara and Timothy Leary, heonce unveiled a real live Oscar—golden, chiseled andall-but-naked. Guests gasped when ABT’s RockerVerastique sprung to life and pirouetted. Then therewas the Mont Blanc S&M-themed party he helpedpromote in the ’90s. “The Learys’ had introducedme to Helmut Newton and I thought if he canmake black leather glamorous, why can’t MontBlanc?” Hay explains.Of course, it’s not all fun and games with Hay.
His business is founded on the serious premisethat luxury has a responsibility to philanthropy.“Over the decades, I have bonded various luxurycompanies—including Harry Winston, BergdorfGoodman, Prada, Chopard, Escada, Bulgariand dozens of others you’d know—to scores oforganizations,” Hay says, listing off The Society ofMemorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Lenox HillNeighborhood House, Henry Street Settlement, theCentral Park Conservancy, Lighthouse Internationaland New Yorkers for Children, which gave the firstbenefit after 9/11 attended by then-Mayor RudolphGuiliani. For the 2010 launch of Giorgio Gucci’scognacs, Giorgio G, Hay threw a gala at The Pierrehonoring 25 smaller charities. But back to the glamour. “I’ve always loved helping
launch the careers of young, beautiful, smartwomen,” Hay says proudly, naming Amanda Hearst,Lydia Hearst-Shaw, Sarah Bradford, Elizabeth Jaggerand Nicky and Paris Hilton. “The teenage Hiltonsisters were my interns at Hamptons Magazine.”“I get a kick out of taking an idea and seeing it grow
into a reality,” he continues. And Hay has achievedjust that for numerous brands and people in almostevery realm imaginable. “I’ve represented movies, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, interior designers, doctors, lawyers and cupcakes!” he trumpets. Ofcourse, keeping things new and exciting is what Haydoes.Well, that and the parties. “Never underestimatethe power of the party!” he chimes.

People often ask about the origins of AVENUE.I conceived the idea of a “pictorial NewYorker”when I was a business reporter for TIMEmagazine. My vision involved creating a qualitymagazine exclusively for residents of better
buildings on the Upper East Side. The challenge was threefold:how to attract talent for a new magazine; how to get advertis-ing; and critically, how to penetrate the fortress buildings.
Because quality was the keynote, we needed signaturephotography to distinguish AVENUE from The New Yorker.Through my term as head of MoMA’s art lending service Imet the great names who would dominate the pages ofAVENUE for decades. From the first issue onward we hailedthe likes of Arnold Newman, George Tice, Harry Benson,Duane Michals, Elliott Erwitt, Horst and, of course, RalphGibson, who produced our covers for 25 years.

The next challenge was advertising to fund the then-freemagazine. Following the old story of the general pointingto his chest of medals—“because I got this one, I got therest”—I met with Walter Hoving, the grand old chairman ofTiffany & Co. As I concluded my easel presentation, he said,“I’m not sure this will work, but it stands for quality andtherefore deserves our support.” His faith galvanized adozen other names who remained clients for years to come, including Bergdorf Goodman, BMW, Chase Manhattan,Johnnie Walker Black, Tanqueray, Sotheby’s, Christie’s,Cartier, Harry Winston and American Airlines.Last, but in fact most challenging, was gaining access
to exclusive buildings whose tight security pushed anydeliveries to the back entrance. In order to get in the front door,I dressed our delivery boys in Brooks Brothers’ blazers
with button down shirts and club ties. They arrived in blacklimos and the doormen graciously received the magazinefor residents.Having established AVENUE in New York, we then
expanded nationally to the 10 top zip codes in the UnitedStates. Later came foreign language editions in Japan andChina. I was, in fact, the cover girl of The Wall Street JournalAsia after pioneering the first foreign magazine in China. After selling AVENUE nearly 10 years ago, I founded the
National Jewelry Institute and published four books ondesign and jewelry. Our current exhibition, “Notorious &Notable: 20th Century Women of Style,” is on display at theMuseum of the City of New York. My fifth book will appearnext year, titled War & Peace: Masterpieces of Patriotic Jewelryand Decorations.

1976 Boaz Mazur,
Executive at Large, Oscar de la Renta
It was the year of the bicentennial: 1976. I was all alone
in town, but Diana Vreeland told me, “I will take care
of you.” I got an invitation for drinks at Mrs. Vreeland’s
apartment and then dinner at Regine’s, the nightclub at
the Regency Hotel that had just opened. I arrived at 550
Park Avenue where Mrs. Vreeland lived, and Yvonne, the
maid, greeted me, saying, “Madame is not ready yet.”
The famous vodka and peanuts and crudités were ready
to nibble on. Twenty minutes later, Mrs. Vreeland
breezed into the wonderful red room and said, “I just
wanted to tell you, it’s not a grand quelque chose, but
Elizabeth Taylor is coming with John Warner,” the
former secretary of the Navy. They had apparently met
the night before and clicked.
The bell rang and in came John Warner, looking like
a movie star, Elizabeth Taylor—who looked slightly
pudgy, I thought, in a shimmery Halston organza
jumpsuit—and Halston himself, looking very dapper in a
white suit. We were having drinks when John Warner
tried to get close to Elizabeth Taylor. By mistake, he
dropped his drink on her. She scolded him, saying, “Oh,
you peasant, you don’t even know how to drink properly,
you farmer . . . ” (John Warner had this wonderful huge
estate in Virginia). Then she said, “Halston, can you help
me clean myself up?” The two of them went into the
bathroom, and stayed for a while. Twenty minutes or so
went by and Mrs. Vreeland said, “We better check on
those lovey doveys, Regine is waiting for us.”
The two of them came out of the bathroom looking
very happy, very high, like they were on another planet.
Halston put his hand in my hand and said, “If you want
some, there is something for you also,” and I noticed there
was a little bottle. I said, “I’m not a prude, but I am
the date of Mrs. Vreeland tonight and don’t think I can
handle both.”
We went around the block to the Regency Hotel in a
limousine, and were greeted by Regine. We sat down
and the music started. After a few minutes, John
Warner asked Elizabeth Taylor to dance in honor of the
bicentennial. He was holding her when she just slid out
of his arms and fell flat on the floor—she was so zonked.
It was just the beginning of the paparazzi, and some
photographers took pictures, but Regine did not allow
any press in the club in those days. I’m told that the story
of the night Elizabeth Taylor fell on the floor at Regine’s
will be in Regine’s book, which just came out in French.
It’s coming out in English soon, too.
John Loring,
Design Director Emeritus, Tiffany
AVENUE began with Judy Price’s sensational idea,
which she told Walter Hoving of Tiffany & Co. about.
Mr. Hoving, who was a genius of marketing, thought that
Judy was a genius of marketing, and he gave her a 12-time
contract on the spot for full-page ads in her magazine. That
didn’t do anything to discourage other advertisers, I can
guarantee you of that. Walter Hoving never missed.
Jon Tisch, Chair and C.E.O., Loews
Iwas present at the birth of the power breakfast. It was
through the eyes of my father, Preston Robert Tisch. He,
along with Lew Rudin, decided that the leaders of the
business community should get together with political
leaders and talk about ways to save New York City. This was
about the time of that famous Daily News headline, “Ford
to City: Drop Dead.”
My parents were living at the Regency then, and my
father, being the consummate host, said, “Why don’t you all
come to breakfast at the Regency Hotel?” So the business
community started coming. Today, when people say “power
breakfast,” they still think of the Regency. It’s terminology
known around the world.

My favorite New York story is during the blackout in the summer of 1977. There was no electricity for a day. The traffic lights
were not working. I remember directing the traffic on Park Avenue for a while. I thought everyone was so cool, so helpful to
one another . . . it was very nice.

During the blackout of 1977, I was an illustrator at Joe Eula’s apartment on 54th Street, showing him some photographs, so we
were concentrating on the light source. We were examining the photos when the lights went out! At that point, we could use
the telephone, but long distance was more difficult. Well, as we were on 54th and Fifth Avenue, guess who came by? None other than
Steve Rubell from up the street at Studio 54, in a convertible with champagne, music, etc. And we all jumped in the car and drove
off to Elaine’s.When we got to there, we all took the tables outside, put candles on them and had a sort of blackout party. NewYorkers
are always so much fun during “disasters” like blackouts, snowstorms, water shortages, no air conditioning. We had a marvelous time.
Then, I remember us walking in the pitch dark to my apartment on 77th Street and literally bumping head-on into other people,
also walking around. I remember it being strangely quiet.

At Bianca Jagger’s 30th birthday party at Studio 54 the theme was white. Bianca wore a beautiful white dress by Halston.
The curtain went up and out came a white horse, led by a beautiful boy, covered only in gold glitter. There was a beautiful girl
riding the horse, also covered only in glitter. She hopped off and Bianca was lifted onto the horse, where she sat side-saddle.
That’s when that famous photo was taken.
About 150 people were invited; Halston was the host, andMick Jagger andMikhail Baryshnikov disco-danced together. At midnight,
the doors opened and the public came pouring in—and Studio 54 was launched as the epicenter of the international club scene.
The following year, Halston gave a birthday party for Elizabeth Taylor. The Rockettes wheeled out the cake, which was a giant portrait
of Elizabeth Taylor, and she made the first cut right across her marzipan bosom.

Peggy Siegal, über-publicist
It was early November 1977. Liza Minnelli was the toast of the town, starring on Broadway in The Act.
Her 11 o’clock song was “New York, New York,” which was written specifically for her by John Kander
and Fred Ebb. (Frank Sinatra eventually stole Liza’s show stopper; it became his signature song and pissed
her off for years.)
Liza and Billie Jean King were my first clients at the hot public relations company PMK, which also
represented Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Richard Gere, Robert Altman and Steven Spielberg’s films. I
was the new eager beaver-star struck assistant to the legendary and beloved publicist, Lois Smith. Billie
Jean adored me, and Liza instantly hated me (God knows why). Liza and I were backstage in her tiny
dressing room after a show when she said, “Can you get me into this new place, Studio 54?” I said, “Liza,
you are Liza. We will go over and figure it out.”
We arrived in a huge black stretch limo, and it was bedlam on the street. It was freezing. Kids in disco
get-ups were screaming, “Steve, Steve, over here!” I said to Liza, “Sit here. I will do reconnaissance.” I broke
into breast stroke arm movements, cutting through the mob, yelling, “Excuse me! Excuse me! Let me
through! Liza’s in the car, Liza’s in the car!” As I approached the velvet rope, a very short guy with very
short hair in a very puffy silver down jacket yelled, “Peggy! How are you? Come in.” It was my dear friend
from Syracuse University, Steve Rubell.
I said, “Steve, what are you doing here?”
He said, “I own the place.”
I said, “Liza’s in the car!”
He said, “Go get her.”
I swam back through the hordes of kids, opened the limo’s back door and announced, “You are
not going to believe this. My best friend from college owns the place. We are in.” Back at the entrance to
the club Steve opened the velvet rope with a flourish and immediately embraced Liza—this total
stranger—like a long lost lover. Neither listened as I said, “Liza, meet Steve; Steve, meet Liza.” With his
arms tightly around her waist, Steve posed with Liza for their first of thousands of photos together. Then
they strolled towards the pulsating lights and deafening music. I was not only forgotten, but accidentally
left behind as the velvet rope snapped shut. After much pleading, a sympathetic security guard let me in.
Then I walked right into my other dear friend from college, Ian Schrager. I said, “What are you doing
here?” He said, “I own the place.” (Of course—they were best friends at school.) I told him about being
dumped at the door. He told me that Steve took Liza to the bathroom to give her “refreshments.” Then he
proudly showed me around his new club.
So that is how Liza Minnelli met Steve Rubell. It was the beginning of an intense public friendship that
became symbolic of the disco era.
John Loring
Iended up doing six books with Jackie Kennedy Onassis. She was my editor until she left us. Walter Hoving suggested I meet
“his friend Janet’s daughter, Jackie.” I love that, calling Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis “my friend Janet’s daughter.” So we met,
we sat on the sofa in Mr. Hoving’s office like two bad children being given a lecture by our parent. Afterwards, we each went
back to our offices, and then the phone rang and it was Jackie. She said, “I think we better hit the decks running and get
working on this project right away.”
That, of course, was a great moment in my New York life. Isn’t that amazing? For the next 15 years, I worked with Jackie on
books. She was the best person on every level to work with, to be friends with, to laugh with, to make ridiculous jokes
with, to have a good time with. She was extremely witty and appreciative of wit, excellent at sizing situations up and making
extraordinary comments about what was actually going on in the room, most of them unrepeatable.

Liz Smith, gossip queen
Iremember well when my friend Arnold Scaasi told
me about a rising New York couple, whom he
described as “very attractive, rich, powerful, and the
wife is Czech or something.” He thought I should meet
this couple named Ivana and Donald Trump. (Can you
believe there was ever a time when all New Yorkers did
not know about the Trumps?)
Well, I did meet them, and I loved them. They were a
fabulous story. He was a homegrown kind of rich boy from
a fine family in construction. She was a ski champ. When I
first met Donald, I was amazed at his ego and braggadocio,
but I still liked him. He struck me as healthily egomaniacal
and also as an adroit businessman who wasn’t a crook.
(I think my impressions were right!) Ivana was a sketch.
You could hardly understand a word she said, but she was
impressionable, generous and happy-go-lucky.
I went on many excursions with the Trumps: in a
helicopter in a storm to Atlantic City to see their
casino; in a private jet to Palm Beach; to parties here,
there and at Mar-a-Lago. Through Donald, I met a lot of
interesting people, like Don King, football heroes and
baseball stars. It was always an adventure—and a story
or an item for my column.
Then, several years after the Trumps’ ascendancy, all
hell broke loose. They were separating, divorcing. He had
a new girlfriend. Ivana, after much plastic surgery, was
heartbroken. I became involved, taking sides like a dope.
This ended up in a three-month marathon of Trumps all
the time . . . on the front page of the Daily News and on
“Live at Five” at WNBC. I was called night and day to leak,
pontificate, keep up the gossip.
In the end, Donald said he was buying the News in
order to fire me. Though this was certainly not a positive
time for me ethically, professionally, it was very good for
my outlets. I became known the world over. I ended up in
TIME magazine, in their cover story on gossip. Carl
Bernstein denounced me for making more money than
Pulitzer Prize reporters. (He was right!)
Well, in the end, all turned around. After a few years of
hard feelings on Donald’s side, he pronounced that we
were friends after all. “I think I’m beginning to love
you again!” he wrote in one of his big, elegant, cream
stationery letters, suitable for framing. I had always liked
Donald, so I kept on with both Trumps and, in time, I
came to honor and admire their three children.
The end of the ’70s, the beginning of the ’80s—it was the
Trumps who made headlines. I remember them being
omnipresent. Now they are both tycoons, separately. And in
these times, they seem absolutely quaint in their one-time
front page pasts. The Trumps defined this era and NewYork
for me. They were, they still are, always a story.

Ibrought Paloma Picasso to work at Tiffany & Co. in 1980.
She had been one of my best friends in Europe. After the
famous events of May 1968, things came to a halt in Paris.
Paloma said, “I think we’d better think of somewhere else to
go, and since you’re the oldest, maybe you’d better go find us
something to do.” So, I came to New York and found us
something to do.
I had known Paloma since she was a 16-year-old living in
her grandmother’s house in Paris. She became one of the
world’s great jewelry designers. That was wonderful!
There was also the thrill of working with Elsa Peretti at
Tiffany & Co. We have a pretty star-studded cast of characters.
These genius designers changed the way women wear jewelry.

Halston had decided to have a drag party. It was top-
secret; he didn’t want it in the news. We all spent hours
getting ready in our “costumes.” I went as a man in a leather
jockstrap, leather vest, beautiful black-and-white striped, silk
robe, my riding boots, hair pulled back with a fake mustache
and manly makeup.Absolutely no one knew who I was or even
that I was in drag! All the boys thought I was another cute boy.
Andy went as Dolly Parton with a big, blonde wig. Catherine
Guinness went as Andy. Halston wore high heels and walked
magnificently in them. A lot of people used costumes from
Liza Minnelli, and Steve Rubell came in a huge, red ball gown
à la Scarlett O’Hara. Steve’s dress caught on fire from one of the
many candles Halston had around. We were all rushing, trying
to put out the fire. Of course it was in the papers: “Page Six”
and even The Washington Post. My mother called to ask me
what I was doing.

ANew York moment that changed
the course of my life was meeting
Nancy Reagan at Le Cirque in February
1981. The First Lady and President
Reagan had gone to see Sugar Babies,
starring Mickey Rooney and Ann
Miller, and they came to Le Cirque
afterward. Sirio had arranged for the
restaurant to be full of Reagan admirers.
Reinaldo and Carolina Herrera
invited me, Andy Warhol and some
friends from abroad, Countess Marina
Cicogna, Franco Rossellini and Florinda
Bolkan. The Reagans were with the
Bloomingdales, Jerry Zipkin, Claudette
Colbert and Jan and Mike Cowles (who
published Look magazine). Our group
finished eating before the Reagans did,
and everyone from our table dashed
over to theirs.
I felt kind of shy and so did Andy, so
I went to get my coat and he followed.
Suddenly, I heard Alfred Bloomingdale
asking in his booming voice, “Where’s
Bob Colacello? He’s the only real
Republican here.” So Alfred introduced
Andy to the President, and then he
said, “Mr. President, this is Bob
Colacello, the editor of Interview. He’s
a real Republican.” And Reagan said,
“That’s good.”
I was introduced to Nancy Reagan
next. She took both of my hands in hers
and gave me that gaze, and said: “I’ve
heard a lot about you.” The only thing I
could think to say in response was, “I’ve
heard a lot about you, too.” She let out
this deep, warm, sophisticated laugh that
made me think of her in a whole new
way. And she continued holding onto my
hands for a remarkably long time.
As soon as we left the restaurant,Andy
started saying, “She really loves you,
Bob.” I could tell he was very jealous by
the number of times he repeated it.

Mick Jagger came to my house to get his daughter, Jade, because she had been
staying with me and Bianca was away. My dad spent at least 30 minutes trying
to decide what kind of music to put on. He finally went with Bob Seger. I was morti-
fied. I was like, “Dad, no music, please, no music.” Then my mom came over and gave
Mick a lecture about spending more time with his daughter. Later my parents fought
for like an hour. That was a big moment. The whole building was talking about it.

When we were 13, we all went to this club called Area, which was really fun.
We would wait on line in front of the bouncers, who decided who could
come in and who couldn’t.We all had braces, so we were careful to keep our mouths
shut and not to smile so we could get in.

Area was just a blur of changing décors, the only constant being Eric Goode
grinning seductively. After Steve Rubell got out of jail, Calvin Klein threw his
daughter, Marci, a Sweet 16 party at Studio 54. It was the last great party there,
before Steve and Ian Schrager opened the Palladium.

Iwas photographing the wedding of Freddie and Carol Guest when a PR woman came
up to me and said, “How would you like to shoot an opening of YSL on Madison
Avenue?” I said, “I’d like to do that.” They paid me very well. A lot better than the 13
weddings I had done. The opening was very glamorous. Elizabeth Taylor, Malcolm
Forbes, Pat Buckley and Nan Kempner were there.
Later, a magazine called me up and asked if they could use the pictures. I told them
to call YSL, and they said, “Yes.” The magazine asked, “How much for two pages?”
I said, “Nothing, just give me a byline.” After that, I never stopped working: movie
openings, charity events—I was out every night.
I’ve photographed 261 weddings in my career. I photographed Vera Wang’s wedding
at The Plaza. I photographed two out of the three Miller girls’ weddings. I went to the
one in London, and the Queen was there. I did one in Bali. But the Miller wedding that
was right here, at the foot of Wall Street, that one I did not do.
When Vanity Fair featured Bill Cunningham about 10 or
12 years ago, I had the most pictures of Bill Cunningham
taking pictures of other people. They published those.

worlds: downtown, uptown, celebrities,
artists. My friends and I—Marie-Chantal,

get all dressed up and go down there once or
twice a week. Sometimes we would run into
Lizzie’s father’s clients, like John F. Kennedy

New York became jaded. There were no

My first job in New York was seating
people at the Odeon in 1983. I was
seating Andy Warhol, Whoopi Goldberg and
Jean-Michel Basquiat and all of those people
when the art world was red hot in Soho. I
worked for George Trescher, a brilliant guy
and a wonderful character. He was half
German and half Irish with a fiery temper, but
utterly brilliant and, on a genius level, a
fundraiser and press rep. He was a great friend
of Mrs. Astor and really helped to guide her
“Mrs. Astor of New York” persona. I got to
help organize Caroline Kennedy’s wedding

hard-to-shock Mrs. Vreeland.

Iarrived in New York in the mid-’80s, straight from the tepid shores of
England, where I had attended boarding school. The Sloane Rangers, who
were easily recognizable since they were uniformly clad in the three B’s
(Burberry, Benetton and Barbour), dominated British social life at the time.
Princess Diana was the Queen of Style and tea with a touch of rum the drink of
choice. Like the perpetual rains, the life of a teenager in Britain was rather drab.
Oh boy, did my 18-year-old eyes bulge at the sight of my New York contem-
poraries. Clad in Chanel and Valentino, they were party-hopping from Regine’s
to ClubA and fromArea to Palladium. The city never slept, nor did I.During the
week, dinners were hosted by the infamous duo Marc Biron and Ludovic Autet
of the Junior International Club. On weekends, one recovered in the glorious
Hamptons. It was overwhelming, intriguing and, above all, great fun! Everybody
rubbed shoulders with everyone. To what extent? I was about to find out.
Following my parents’ plea to take me under his protective wing, our friend
Ludwig Salm (“Luwi” not “Ludi”) invited me to a dinner party. Luwi was one
of the eligible bachelors in New York, all seven feet of him, and a Prince
to boot. The dinner was stacked with beautiful people, and I was terribly
intimidated. Seated to my left was a charming Frenchman, Sébastien de
Ganay, who turned out to be a classmate at Columbia and is still one of my
best friends. Placed on my right was a handsome American gentleman by the
name of Michael Dulksorn—at least that’s what it said on his place card,
Luwi’s writing was atrocious.
Sebastien and I were quickly engaged in conversation, but polite society
dictates that you spend at least 10 minutes with each dinner partner. After a
while I felt I had grossly neglected Mr. Dulksorn, not that he showed much
interest since a horde of models was trying to get his attention. I studied his face
and somehow there was something strangely familiar about him. Deja Vu?
I asked him, “Do we know each other?”
“No.” The answer was economical and to the point.
“Do you live here?”
“Yes.” Okaaaaay.
I kept on staring and suddenly it clicked. “You know who you remind
me of?” I asked him in my Anglo/German accent. He looked mortified.“There
is this policeman on television in ‘The Streets of San Francisco.’ He looks
exactly like you!” Poor Mr. Dulksorn was speechless.
After a while he replied. “Well Einstein, that’s because I am the cop on ‘The
Streets of San Francisco.’ And please stop calling me Mr. Dulksorn; my name
is Michael Douglas.”

former “Page Six" editor
One of the more memorable nights I’ve had
was back in 1985 when Count Roffredo
Gaetani and Taki Theodoracopulos staged a
three-round boxing match for charity at St. Agnes
High School on East 44th Street. They were good
friends and they thought it would be fun. I wrote
up the item for “Page Six”: ‘Pair of Gentlemen
duke it out, keep smiling.’ This was when aristocrats
prided themselves on being sportsmen. Reinaldo
Herrera was Roffredo’s second, and Claus von
Bülow was standing in Taki’s corner, holding a
towel for him. Franco Rossellini, Countess Pilar
Crespi and Frank Shields (Brooke Shields’ father)
were all there. Roffredo, a.k.a. the Italian Stallion,
was declared the winner. He had the advantage of
height, weight, experience and being 16 years
younger. Later, like the gentlemen they are,
the two gladiators, accompanied by their ever-
so-social entourages, toasted each other with
champagne at Mortimer’s.

One of my favorite New York moments was
when Wollman Rink reopened after being
closed for seven years. I had seen it unused for too
long and offered to renovate it for the city. It was
a labor of love. Four months later, we had the
opening with Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill,
Scott Hamilton and others to help celebrate this
great day for New York City. Since then, the rink
has hosted thousands of happy skaters. I can see
the rink from my apartment, and it’s a reminder
of a special moment for everyone.

Iwas in charge of organizing the lunch that followed Andy Warhol’s
memorial service in 1987. Everyone went to St. Patrick’s and then they
trooped to the Paramount Hotel—Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager had just
bought it, and Robert Isabell did the most extraordinary job turning it
into this sort of fantasy playland. He made the floor bubble gum pink,
painted the walls and the gothic-looking ceiling silver, then hung
this enormous painting that apparently was the last thing Andy worked
on—ironically it, was “The Last Supper.” It was an amazing party
directly after the service. The DJ was there and Debbie Harry walked in
playing her music and then the Rolling Stones walked in, the Ramones.
It was an extraordinary time.
Glenn Bernbaum, who owned Mortimer’s, was such a curious char-
acter. He was quite cantankerous and had this funny habit of sidling
up to your table, sitting down, ordering for himself and getting up before
the check came and you realized you were paying for his lunch or dinner.
A lot of the same people went for dinner, but lunch was the real
scene-stealer in New York. Jackie Onassis and Nancy Reagan would
always get the first tables. You would see people do a double take at the
First Ladies having lunch.
Isang a song when the first Bushes came to the White House. It was
a kind of spoof called “The Reagans to Bel-Air” about what
the Reagans’ lives were going to be like once they wound up back
in California.

I’d already been living in New York for six or seven years, long enough
to consider myself pretty savvy and even jaded, when I chanced upon a
tableau that caught me by surprise and came to seem emblematic for me.
I was on Fifth Avenue in midtown, God knows why, waiting for the light
at 51st Street. Across the street, framed between St. Patrick’s Cathedral and
Saks Fifth Avenue, I spotted a billionaire standing next to a homeless man.
I happened to recognize the billionaire because he’d recently bought
Revlon and was much in the news. The homeless man was wearing several
ragged coats and carrying a variety of shopping bags stuffed with God
knows what. On the other side of the billionaire was a well-dressed hulk,
presumably a bodyguard. But for at least 30 seconds, the billionaire and
the bum stood there side by side, waiting for the light. Before the
light turned, I said to myself, “I’m going to write a novel big enough to
encompass a billionaire and a homeless man as characters.” (It would be
my fourth, Brightness Falls.) And that’s about as representative a
Manhattan tableau as I can remember.

Amy Fine Collins,
editor, Best-Dressed List, Vanity Fair writer
In the late ’80s, I had the privilege of meeting Horst, the photographer, and his
boyfriend, Valentine Lawford. It was through them that I first met Eleanor
Lambert. Around the same time, I also met Geoffrey Beene. He adored Eleanor, so we
had that in common. I would consider those three—Horst, Lambert and Beene—to
be the biggest influences on my present-day career in journalism and fashion.
Eleanor was my neighbor so I spent a lot of time at her apartment. The most
interesting collection of people convened at Eleanor’s for her Best-Dressed List
meetings. To kick off Fashion Week, she always hosted a party to which all the out-of-
town editors were invited. Eleanor founded Fashion Week, the Costume Institute, the
International Best-Dressed Poll and the CFDA—still the four cornerstones of the
American fashion industry. She also helped establish many designers: Cardin, Norell,
Anne Klein, Bill Blass and Kenny Lane among them. She originated fashion PR. She
championed John Loring and brought him to Tiffany. And she was a big protector of
mine, an influence and a guide. She was the fairy godmother.
Eleanor was funny and strong-willed, with a temper, but she had huge reserves of
love in her heart. She was very opinionated. Originally, she had been an
artist, a sculptor, so her eye for fashion had nothing to do with commerce or
egomania—it was really about quality. She was very forward-thinking, without
nostalgia or sentimentality.
There was a fraternity of people who were close with her, a number of them on the
Best-Dressed List committee. Jerry Zipkin was always at those meetings, he was an
important factor. Reinaldo Herrera was essential to those convocations, too.
Eleanor had one of the great New York apartments. Not super grand, but the way a
New York apartment should be. It was an old world, pre-war apartment on the 11th
floor with what I consider the best view of New York: the Central Park Reservoir. The
11th floor, maybe the 15th, is just about as high up as anyone needs to be. Otherwise
you lose the human scale and you might as well be in a helicopter.
Everything in her apartment held personal meaning. Things were allowed to wear
out; she had been there forever and ever. Her bedroom was done in mattress ticking,
which Geoffrey Beene had given her—very simple, but ultra chic. In her living room,
she had an oversized needlepoint stool that belonged to Queen Victoria and an Alex
Katz painting. Her son, Bill, is an art critic and poet, and he is friendly with the Katzes.
Eleanor was extremely with it. A Noguchi bust of her was among the objects you saw
upon entering (she had been Noguchi’s publicist, too). Her kitchen was a labyrinthine
wonderland; that’s where she made her famous red-pepper jelly, an annual Christmas
gift. I have a few things from her apartment—the chandelier in my daughter’s
bedroom was in Eleanor’s bedroom hallway—so she is a presence in our home always.

Iam a born and raised ‘city kid,’ as they call us, so my whole
life has really been one big indelible New York City
moment. When I think of favorites, Central Park automatic-

quiet place—nowadays, anyhow. In high school, it was about
wearing my kilt and flirting with boys after school. But that’s
just one moment; I’ve enjoyed so many there. I’ll always
remember getting dressed up at 15 with my besties, fake ID in

There was a Victorian theme because the orchestra

The 150th anniversary of the Philharmonic was a

Afavorite New York moment was one night in the late 1990s. I was coming home late from work at The New York Times. It had
been one of those grueling days and I had no patience left. I looked at the cab driver in the rear view mirror and said, “Buddy, do
you really know where you’re going?” I got out of the taxi, walked over to his door, jerked my thumb at him and said, “Get out,
I’m driving.” He was new and very young and, I think, slightly shocked and slightly not sure of the custom of the country. So—to my
amazement—he moved to the passenger side of the front seat. I pulled up at my apartment building in five minutes and the doorman
stared at me as if I had walked in the front door naked, holding a hand grenade. If memory serves, I gave the driver a really good tip.

One funny New York memory I have is meeting Peter Beard for the first time at his apartment. I’ll never forget the occasion
because I had only recently moved to Manhattan to begin my freshman year at NYU, and the city was still a relatively
unknown universe to me. I was with my uncle, Dirk Wittenborn, who is an old friend of Peter’s. As soon as we walked in the door,
Peter poured a round of vodka and OJs, insisting that we accept the freshly cut cubes of ice he was dropping into our glasses. I felt
mature for having been offered a genuine cocktail, so I drank every last sip from the bottom of my glass, including the final traces
of water that had accumulated from the slow-melting ice. But no more than two minutes after I had handily polished off the
beverage, Peter’s wife came marching into the room with the special ice tray in her hand. “Peter,” she said in a state of bewilderment,
“why did you put the cat’s water bowl in the freezer?” Water bowl, I thought, there must be some misunderstanding. But there
wasn’t any misunderstanding. We truly had been drinking the cat’s backwash. To this day, I’m not sure what inspired the peculiar
bartending maneuver. Maybe it simply was an oversight, or maybe placing the pet’s water in the freezer just seemed like a
convenient way to make ice. Whatever the case, Peter appeared to enjoy finishing his own drink that evening without any regrets.

But I made sure to get a doctor in Manhattan, and drove into

My mom was telling me,“You know what? When you go into
labor, you are not going to care which hospital you deliver
in. You’re going to be in so much pain and you will just want
to go to the hospital that is closest to you.” But no, when my
water broke, I drove over the bridge to Manhattan. It was
that important to me because I love New York, and I wanted

Mrs. Herrera backstage in the midst of all the models changing and the dresses on racks. That night, I snuck into Moomba—I was
way underage—and had a very wild time.

Everyone knows New York is, at the risk of sounding terribly
clichéd, the city that never sleeps—the city that hustles and
bustles with an unparalleled and addictive electric energy, day
and night. But what happens when that electric energy goes
completely kaput? Such was the case a few years ago during the
famed blackout. Daniel and I were headed out of town, but were
stopped in our tracks when the power went out and our car was
rendered immovable in the garage, unable to be put on the
electric lift. That night, we walked the city, and though the
skyline that normally gives me goosebumps was dark, there was
still a very palpable energy as diehard New Yorkers braved the
streets for last-minute supplies and maybe to feel a sense of
community we sometimes take for granted. As every restaurant
we hit late that night stopped serving, we finally found refuge in
one of our favorites: JG Melon. They were serving cheese
sandwiches by candlelight. The memory of that night (and the
cheese sandwich), as Daniel and I huddled together in the dark,
will stay with me always.

In 2003, I had this amazing visit to the Barbie shop from 1959
in Stuyvesant Town. I was researching ultimate American
icons, and I had come across a lady who created an entire
bedroom devoted to Barbie. I’m a Barbie lover and avid Barbie
buyer for my two girls, so to see Barbieville recreated was
magical. As it turns out, Barbie and all her accessories and even
her love, Ken, whom she never married, live in a rent-stabilized
apartment with a wardrobe Michael Kors would die for.
The only things missing were “Kelly” and her Corvette.

Rev. Al Sharpton has become a regular [at the
Regency], and he’s quite a character. The thing about
him is that he has the ability and the grace to laugh at
himself. Every year, each hotel has to put together a video
to honor the employee of the year. One year, we enlisted
Al Sharpton to make a cameo in the video because he’s a
recognizable national figure. He didn’t blink an eye.
Filming took place on a Good Friday, which is, of course,
a very busy day for him. At first, the person who makes his
appointments said, “He is far too busy, he can’t do it.” But
Al said, “No, I have 15 minutes, I’ll come by.” He went out
of his way to ham it up and go over the top; he just made
the whole video. He improvised and picked up a plate and,
when the camera panned over to him, licked it to show how
good the food is.

Arecent “Only in New York” moment took place at
Paper magazine’s 25th anniversary celebration. The
black-tie evening was the opening event for Fashion Week,
and I had been following the behind-the-scenes plans
leading up to the occasion. I had come to expect a guest list
that only our magazine can muster—an intricate balance
between the art and fashion worlds, the nightlife fauna
and, of course, the iconic dinosaurs that have completely
transformed the cultural landscape of our city. A line-up of
diverse performers was announced on the invitation, but
no one could expect the black-sequined cherry that would
top this cake. A packed room filled with good friends,
endless champagne and a roster of New York’s do-ers
would be enough to make the evening a memorable one.
But around midnight, we were all surprised when Liza
Minnelli (yes, Ms. Sally Bowles herself) took the stage for a
heart-stopping rendition of “New York, New York.” All 500
guests joined in the chorus that echoed through the vast
marble halls of the library, making its foundation vibrate
with excitement. The legendary Minnelli certainly knows
how to work a room. It was a natural high that consumed
each reveler, one of those moments that can only happen
in a Woody Allen flick. In fact, life in the Big Apple
can sometimes feel like an elaborate and endless
musical number. ✦

We were getting ready for the Met Ball in the salon. Daphne
Guinness, Sophie Dahl, Kelly Klein, Cathy Horyn and a
member of the British royal family were there—and that’s just
mentioning a few. It was quite a pre-party. I thought, “Wow, this
is so extraordinary. What a gift New York has been to me. Here I
am sitting on top of Bergdorf.” It was the greatest compliment.

My 60th birthday party was on the roof of the Gramercy
Park Hotel. It was given by Claudia Cohen, Samantha
Boardman Rosen and Aby Rosen and Ian Schrager. That was
the last time Claudia Cohen was seen in public. No one knew
she was ill; she had kept it secret. It was a seated dinner for 156
people, and the place was done up beautifully by Bronson Van
Wyck. It was the greatest night, and also one of the saddest. My
agent, Mort Janklow, said, “Bob, only you could draw such a
range of people from so many different worlds.”
That’s why I love New York. From my earliest days at
Interview, I’ve always believed in mixing it up: uptown,
downtown, gay, straight, black, white, old, young, frivolous,
serious, American, South American, European, Asian, whatever.
This is a city with a constantly evolving cast of characters who
come here from everywhere, determined to make it. And to be
able to write about these characters is constantly energizing.

O ne of my greatest thrills was meeting Valentino for the first
time. We received a request to bring the collection to Rome. It
was an enormous undertaking: shipping 40-plus garments to
Valentino’s studio. When I arrived, I met the famous Oliver—the name,
as many now know, that Valentino gives all his dogs. A few minutes
later, Mr. Valentino himself arrived and had a model try on each piece,
one by one. When he found something he felt required attention,
everything came to a halt. He pulled out a sketch pad and started
drawing how he thought the garment should look . . . It was magical.
And of course he was right; they were better in the end. Valentino
displayed a mastery of his trade that I had never seen before. This was
true couture, and it was an incredible learning experience.

A lex Soldier’s journey into jewelry making is asextraordinary as the multifaceted master-pieces he creates. A native of the city of Permin the Ural Mountain region between Europe
and Asia, Soldier received a master’s degree in computerengineering before a life-changing encounter in 1981. Namely, hemet his future wife,Galina.“I was a computer engineer at thetime,” Soldier says. “But she saw my drawings and attention todetail, recognized my artistic predisposition and thought that Ishould try my hand at jewelry design.”For a man with no previous experience with rings
and things, this was an unexpected piece of adviceindeed. But Soldier is a self-taught craftsman, andrecalls being in his early teens when he carved a15-inch sculpture out of wood and adorned itwith stone accents he collected from hismother’s costume jewelry box. Though shemay not have been thrilled, it was a forma-tive experience he draws from to this day.
Now, Soldier’s pieces are made of precious metals and inlaidwith precious gemstones. Each piece is meticulously detailedand bares the marks of Soldier’s signature techniques. “I createmy own tools to apply special decorative finishes to the metal,”Soldiers says of his artistic process. “It gives my jewelry thatspecial touch that sets it apart from the rest.”Since emigrating to the United States in 1990, Soldier’s
found both commercial success and critical acclaim fromhis contemporaries, receiving the Platinum PassionAward from Platinum Guild International in 1998
and the Spectrum honor from the AmericanGem Trade Association in 2002.But Soldier doesn’t just receive awards, he
also creates them, including the “Triumph” statuette
awarded annually in Russia to visionaryartists, writers and musicians. Recently,Soldier collaborated with The PrincessGrace Foundation-USA to create thePrince Rainier III Award. At this year’s 28th
Annual Princess Grace Awards Gala inNovember, actor Denzel Washingtonand his wife, Pauletta, took homethe honor.Intended to represent the inter-
connectedness of theater, danceand film, Soldier’s statuette, which can also be worn as a pin,is primarily platinum-plated
silver accented with black obsidian and Swarovski crystals, aswell as Soldier’s unique metal texturizing. “Each piece Icreate has a very distinctive character, be it a miniaturesculpture or a piece of jewelry,” Soldier explains. “I breathe lifeinto every single one of my creations.”“Every gemstone has a mystery and its own story,”
Soldier continues. “When I add my story to it through mydesigns, it becomes a timeless, precious poem that speaks tothe heart.” Not being one to buy into fads and trends,Soldier’s pieces are meant to be collected over time, likeworks of art. “I believe in personal style and artisticexpression that doesn’t succumb to the fleeting moment ofa particular fashion,” he explains.Alex Soldier’s jewelry collection is available at select

A Century of Success
B rown Harris Stevens is a New York institution older than the cityitself. In 1873, Charles S. Brown opened his real estate appraisalbusiness in Lower Manhattan. When Manhattan was annexedwith the other boroughs in 1898, New York City celebrated its

in New York City’s residential real estate market. Today, President Hall F. Willkieexpertly guides the company. As one of the industry’s most respected andsuccessful executives, Willkie’s leadership—paired with the unmatchedexperience and knowledge of the firm’s managers and brokers— affords BrownHarris Stevens the top position in one of the world’s most challenging realestate environments.

At the helm of New York’s most influentialresidential real estate marketing and salesfirm, Kelly Kennedy Mack has an office withan enviable view of Central Park. Seen fromthe 39th floor along the coveted 57th Streetcorridor, the length of the park reveals itself
like a breathtaking carpet across the city. It is a view thatpeople pay a substantial amount of money for, as Mack,President of Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group, knowswell. And yet, for her, the most thrilling part of it is not thepark—but the view of several prominent developments withwhich the firm has been a part.“It is a privilege to collaborate with the most prestigious
developers on new landmarks,” says Mack. “These buildingstransform the skyline and continually redefine the city, andto be a part of it is incredibly exciting.” Mack continues,“I’m inspired every day by Corcoran Sunshine’s leadershipteam, including James Lansill, Beth Fisher, Tricia Hayes Cole
and Elaine Diratz. They are among the most forward-thinking and experienced real estate professionals inthe business.”Founded in 2005, Corcoran Sunshine was the
product of a merger between The Sunshine Groupand Corcoran Group Marketing, two firms that hadeach reshaped the New York landscape. LouiseSunshine, founder of the eponymous firm, establishedan industry unto itself in the mid-1980s by offeringresidential real estate developers unique expertise inmarketing and sales. By providing a visionaryperspective on each development and creatingrelationships throughout the city’s brokeragecommunity, The Sunshine Group was able to achieveunprecedented heights in the luxury residential arenawith properties such as the Time Warner Center andOne Beacon Court. A discerning clientele was eagerfor new architectural masterpiece homes akin toworks of art, and with help from The SunshineGroup, developers were able to reap value indelivering this new, modern luxury lifestyle.By the mid-1990s, a revolution was happening
downtown. Neighborhoods like Tribeca and Sohowere transforming from pioneering to the epitome ofchic. Keyed into the new downtown pulse, PamelaLiebman, now the C.E.O. of The Corcoran Group, founded Corcoran Group Marketing and began totransform the way an affluent set of New Yorkerslived. Outrageous loft residences on North Moore
Street and discreet Crosby Street appealed to the sensibilities ofthe rich and famous—and those who wished to live like them.“From the very beginning, Corcoran Group Marketing was
hungry for a challenge and ready to think differently,” saysLiebman. “It’s been 15 years since I founded the group, andthat fearlessness and adaptability has served our developerswell through the many ups and downs of the market.”By the time the two organizations merged, they had crossed
uptown and downtown, envisioning new architecturallandmarks and historic conversions, each setting residentialprecedents and creating homes of enduring value.Today, Mack presides over an unrivaled team of real estate
research, design, marketing and sales experts, all dedicated toinnovation. Corcoran Sunshine’s collective sales total inexcess of $20 billion, $10 billion of which were conductedsince Mack assumed the presidency in 2006. This year alone, the firm has achieved $1 billion in sales, and is partneredwith the city’s most lauded real estate developers on a new

Continually at the forefront of innovation,The Corcoran Group has shaped the wayNew York City real estate firms operatetoday. Established in 1973, The Corcoran
Group was founded during a historic transition in NewYork City’s real estate market. As New York moved awayfrom a rental dominated market to one of individualownership, Corcoran seized the opportunity to platform itsbusiness. During this time, Corcoran focused its efforts ontargeting specific neighborhoods and the luxury market, thus distinguishing itself from its competitors.
Today, what truly setsCorcoran apart from thecompetition is the criticalrole technology playsin shaping the face of itsbusiness. Widely lauded asthe real estate leader intechnology, Corcoran hasembraced technologicaladvancements and trends, adapting them to fit thecompany’s business model.Fifteen years ago, Corcoranlaunched one of thefirst real estate websites,www.corcoran.com. Sincethen, the site has beennamed the No. 1 luxury
real estate website in New York and ranked in the top1 percent of the most heavily trafficked websites in theworld. Corcoran became one of the first residential brokeragesto launch an iPhone app and an Android app, making finding a home more convenient, immediate andcustomized than ever before. The real estate market has grown enormously in value
and complexity over the last three decades, and so hasCorcoran—now the largest and most successful residentialreal estate firm in New York City, generating up to$18 billion in total company sales. “We have grown from agroup of 30 to 2,200 people, but one thing has neverchanged,” says President and C.E.O. Pamela Liebman, “andthat is the heart and soul of the company—the fact that weare a family, albeit a big one. We have the power of the bigand the heart of the small.”
