Jonny got his gun

EMK Center hosted the play Jonny Got His Gun presented by Dominic Gomes on Oct 25-26. The play is an adaptation of the anti-war novel, Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo published in 1939. It is the story of Joe Bonham, a young soldier who is badly injured during World War I and wakes up in a hospital having lost most of his body parts. At first he wants to end his life but with time he realises that he can use his suffering to show people the horrors of war and help end it. From this synopsis of the play you can understand how relevant the story is in today’s world.

A few quick ways to use jute ropes to add a classic spin to your home

rustic spinThere’s a certain charm in the rustic beauty of jute ropes. Often overlooked as just another unnecessary band for sweet boxes or takeaway packs, why not use these inexpensive ropes to add a touch of old world glamour to your home? From cabinet handles to wall art to bedside lamps, we’ve put a crafty spin to it all. Read on to get some DIY elbow grease and a newly updated home.

The homespun lampWe’ve all got that one lamp sitting somewhere around the house that acts as a constant reminder of yesteryear’s fashion. Completely change the look of your lamp by covering its base with a thinly wrapped rope. If you’re feeling particularly creative you can even dip the rope in a colour of your choice using acrylic paints.

The new Android 5.0 update Lollipop is the next level to its wonderful mobile operating system. But as it goes, different brands will have the updates at certain times throughout the coming months. Here’s a list of brands and when the update will roll out for each.

NexusThe Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10 will all be updated very soon, if not already notified. The new Nexus 6 and 9 will both have the Android 5.0 Lollipop from the get-go in its default factory setting. The same goes for devices that have Google Play Edition, expect to get the notification before others.

HTC & SonyThe One M7 and M8 will surely get updates but you’ll have to wait it out a bit. They have decided to make the the updates available in January 2015. It may seem like a very long time, but this is usually the lotted time for each brand to implement the new changes worldwide. The entire Z series will be receiving the update, starting January 2015. If you still use the first Xperia Z, you’re in luck.

Samsung & LGSamsung is notorious for their timing on delivering updates. However, it seems their most recent line of phones will be getting the updates. Unfortunately, they have yet to release any information on the date. Although, there is a list of devices on SamMobile.com that will be guaranteed to have the 5.0 update. LG seems to be on the same boat for now. No dates, but the LG G3, G2 Pro, and possibly the G2 and original G Pro will be getting Lollipop.

MotorolaThe brand will be releasing 5.0 to plenty of their upcoming devices in the coming months. The first and second generation Moto X, Moto G, along with the Moto E and their Droid phones will all be getting their updates.

Texts, pictures, and now video messages

We’ve made enough fuss over the newest iPhone models. Now, Apple’s tablets and Macs take centre stage. We take a look at the new generation gadgets introduced in October.

iPadThe company has introduced both the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3. The former has had a significant update to both design and performance. The Air 2 is the thinnest tablet Apple has ever released at 6.1-millimetres, which is 18% thinner than the original Air. Its new A8X chip is also 40% faster than its predecessor, while its graphics are 2.5 times faster. In addition, it now possesses an 8-megapixel rear camera and has the ability to shoot slow-motion video and time lapses for the first time. The front camera has been given better face detection and a “burst selfies” mode.

The iPad mini 3, in all honesty,

hasn’t been given the impressive upgrades like the Air. However, it has been given the TouchID, like the Air 2. With minor additions and changes, what you can look forward to is possibly buying the iPad mini 2 (mini with Retina display) as the older models will be getting a substantial price cut.

iMacThey went ahead and awed many with their new Retina iMac. What’s so fantastic about it? Their 27-inch desktop (all-in-one computer), has been given a Retina 5K display with a screen resolution of 5120x2880. That’s 14.7 million pixels. We know, that’s insane. After the incredible upgrade, the iMac remains at 5-millimetres thin. Beautiful it may be, the price tag might make you roll your eyes in the opposite direction. The 1-terabyte Fusion drive and 8GB of memory will cost

Last week, we took a look at the very short and simple ways to send messages through iOS apps. Well, here’s Microsoft’s Skype Qik for Android, Windows, and iOS smartphones. Short video messages were bound to happen and be hyped in traditional fashion. For those who don’t know, Qik actually started as a video streaming application several years ago, beating the likes of YouTube. Naturally in a competing market, Skype acquired Qik and created a light, quick way of video messaging. The UI is wonderful, as expected. It’s everything you would expect from a

new communications app. Yes, there are plenty of similar apps out there but the functionality of Qik is unique and the polar opposite of complicated. It’s like texting each other using video clips. This means, no audio, no chat, just video. Surely, this will

you $2,499 – a little over Tk194,000. Well, that’s if the local suppliers are kind to you. We’re betting against it. Anyone travelling abroad anytime soon?

But if that’s a tad too much for you, the new iMac mini is surprisingly impressive. Starting at around $499, this 7.7-inch square frame packs a punch. All you really need to do is attach a monitor, keyboard and mouse. All of which aren’t included, of course. It’s pushing a fourth generation Intel Core processor, flash storage that is 50% faster, with wireless performance being three times quicker than the models that came before it. The speed doesn’t end there, as its Intel Iris Graphics or HD Graphics 5000 performs 90% faster than the older generations.

be popular in the mime community. With jokes aside, this becomes a very fun way to communicate. Taking a look at the features, you can see for yourself how easy and fun it can be.You can also record and save short reactions to your friend’s messages for every occasion. It’s your personal GIFs. Another wonderful little detail is that

you’ll be able to delete videos from days past in group chats that you decided you no longer want or like. So go ahead and download it for free, type in your mobile number and start recording.

Road Rage

Remember that scene in SRK’s Main Hoon Na where he chases the goons in a rickshaw destroying everything in its path. Not sure if that is the inspiration behind the rash driving by rickshaw pullers in our capital city.

“I don’t know what kind of pleasure these drivers get from making other people’s lives miserable,” says Shibani Khan who had a terrible experience when a rickshaw came out of nowhere and hit the rickshaw her mother and she were riding on. This caused her mother to fall off and badly hurt her hand.

This is one of many such incidents which occur on a daily basis. The jerks caused by the sudden push have long term effects particularly on our backbone and causes whiplash and cervical spine injuries.

Also when a rickshaw hits another rickshaw, it causes commotion amid the people involved resulting in the drivers and passengers swearing at each other in addition to traffic jams.

While the traffic police should take actions against these kinds of abnormal driving, it also falls upon us to be more responsible citizens and make sure that our respective rickshaw pullers do not drive in such an obnoxious manner. This can be done in a more civil manner by explaining to these drivers the hazards of such rough driving both for him and others involved.

Got a peeve to share about the state of the city’s roads and traffic? Sends it to us at [email protected], or post it on our Facebook wall.

The legendary Soichiro Honda once said, “A company is most clearly defined not by its people or its history, but by its products.” Today, Honda is quite well-known for putting engineering excellence above everything else. And with the all-new Brio, Honda has done a stonking job. But as the saying goes - too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Well, you don’t need to spend too much time in this little Honda to realise that the Brio is indeed what the company stands for.

ExteriorAt the first glance, you don’t think there’s anything largely special about the Brio. Yes, it looks modern, it has cutesy style with angular lines, but then again most sub-compacts today, pretty much do that too. But the Brio is an exception. It is designed for aerodynamic efficiency with complexly shaped front bumpers that look like they’re designed to channel air more effectively. This aerodynamic look is further emphasised by stabilising fins present on the side mirror housing and rear quarter window. Thankfully, the car stays away from the chrome garnish and relies heavily on the sporty design cues attained from the Honda CR-X.

InteriorOpen the doors and you find a curvy dashboard, which is straightforward and easy to understand. And like the dashboard, the instrument panel is also easy to understand. Right in the centre is the large speedometer, next to it on the left is the rev count metre and to the right is an array of warning lights. The multi-function computer and the fuel gauge are nestled below the central speedometer. On the other hand, the tilt-adjustable steering ensures an ergonomic experience. The abundance of hard plastics is what you’d expect from an entry level sub-compact, but at least the Brio has nicely textured plastics with dotting throughout the cabin.

What’s making that grinding sound when you hit the brakes? If your car is making a grinding noise every time you hit the brakes, you should look into the matter quickly. Leaving disc brakes unattended might result in costly replacement of the brakes.

However, if your brakes are making a grinding sound when you come to a halt, then your brake pads have almost run out and it’s time to get them replaced.

A quick inspection trip to the mechanic will let you know whether you have damaged your brake discs or it’s just the brake pads that need replacement.

aUto CoRReCt

PerformanceThe Brio is the best-in-class in terms of performance. Where its competitors rely on three-cylinder engines, Honda is popped in a four-cylinder engine under the bonnet. It’s powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC engine that is capable of handing out 88HP and 109Nm of torque. Mated to this engine is Honda’s slick transmission which is a first-in-class five-speed automatic. Combine this with a light-weight body and you have the perfect recipe for performance.

SafetyThe Brio comes standard with an anti-lock braking system. It has a five-star NCAP Euro safety rating which makes it very safe. And it also comes with two front air-bags and the facility of seatbelts for all seats to guard you in case of an accident.

The Honda Brio is a brilliant city car courtesy of its compact dimensions, perky response and agile handling. The dynamics are just right for city use and there is nothing to complain about. On the whole, it is a smart little car that knows how to have some fun.

I am a regular student studying pharmacy at one of the best universities in the country. One of my professors tries hitting on me every time he catches me alone after class. This one time he hugged me really tight and I didn’t know what to do. He tries touching my hand every now and then, even when a class is going on and I cannot do anything about it because he’s one of the most senior professors and anything I do may be used against me. I cannot afford that since I’ve already made a lot of sacrifices to be where I am today. Is there nothing I can do to get him to stop acting this way?

You can go to your counsellor and reveal what is going on. Why do you find yourself alone with him in the classroom, knowing what he is like? What your professor does is wrong, totally wrong and you must not let it happen. If you are scared of the repercussions, try first to keep away from him and make sure you are not alone in class, if need be arrive a little late and ask a friend to be with you at all times, If he asks you to go and see him to discuss your work, go with a friend. If he does not stop, go to the authorities and file a complaint.

My wife and I have two very different approaches to parenthood. She’s the overprotective, extremely OCD mother who loses her cool at the slightest inclination. Whereas I try my best to be the mediator, finding safe ground between playing parent and partner. Recently we’ve gotten into severe arguments because I didn’t take hers but my children’s side when she was being a tad bit too harsh on them for their untidiness. She was being unreasonably overbearing and was kicking up a fuss over nothing. I’ve begun to resent her for this very attitude. She cannot expect me to take her side when she is clearly acting like an overbearing psycho mom, can she?

Q

Well, first you must accept and sympathise with your wife because it certainly isn’t an easy task to raise children. They can be a handful, and sometimes as parents you cannot help but lose your cool. Rather than admitting that there is a problem at hand, you’ve seemed to have played the blame game, holding your wife as the lead culprit. If you do want to tackle the situation tactfully, you need to practice both empathy and patience. If her behaviour is something new and recent, try to be patient with her. Dole out an extra dose of affection and acknowledge her problems. Stop belittling her, especially in front of the kids. If you must take sides, do so without hurting either of their feelings by phrasing your words carefully and lovingly. If you really think you cannot make that effort then it is advisable you two go for marriage counselling.

Whether you’re clocking strenuous hours at the bank or stressing away at an advertising job there will always come a time when conflict looms in the horizon. An unjust promotion, a demeaning sentence or even jealousy and pride can stir up a storm at our workplaces. In the heat of the moment it seems all too easy to confront your opposition and begin waging all out verbal war, however, more often than not, this only leads to mounting troubles making both of you look equally immature in the process. This week we see how we can find harmony at our workplaces while keeping our own needs in mind.

stop fearing conflictConflict at the workplace is inevitable. However, to harbour resentment and stay silent for the fear of conflict will just foster and make your work environment unhealthier. From the offset, remember that although we seek prevention rather than cure, once the problems have been blown out of proportion it is best to address them and do so tactfully. As a leader this may be easier for you, but if you are directly involved in the problem itself it is always a good idea to take the first step to resolve it. If you have noticed tensions rising and have an idea that there may be a confrontation or heated argument, it is best to tackle it quickly and with a calm mind.

rant and point fingers at someone else. Remember to keep your comments very neutral and instead of using “I,” use “we” or “us.” Never make the mistake of attacking the person, instead focus on the issue at hand. Don’t exaggerate, don’t insinuate your sentences with anger and don’t even think about making personal attacks. Keep your sentences clear and very neutral.

Actively listen to your oppositionWhile it must be hard to lend an ear to the person you are at war with, it will definitely help you in the long run if you want to resolve the problem at hand. Actually listen to others and let yourself understand the opposing perspective. Instead of playing the blame game, again, focus on the problem itself and not the person.

Give equal importance to others’ opinionsWhen you are hearing them out, make sure you do so sincerely and with an earnest wish to find a solution. Make sure you’re not constantly focusing on what went wrong and who did what. Try to look at the positives while focusing on the future and what can be done rather than what has been done. You can even ask the other person for a possible solution of their own and then take it from there working together to form a solution that is agreeable to both parties. Be open to their ideas and if you have any of your own, don’t force it on them, rather suggest it gently.

I’m a 26-year-old woman in a relationship with a 32-year-old man for the past four years. It has been a tumultuous relationship to say the least. We’ve had several major fights, broken up many times and I even got pressurised by my family to stop seeing him. He has a drinking problem and tends to get extremely crass and nasty. He accuses me of cheating, calls me names and then wakes up the next morning apologising. The last time we broke up I cut him off from my life. He went ballistic, tried to insult my friends and my family in the most vulgar way possible. He insulted them, threatened to have them attacked and all this he did under a drunken stupor. As ashamed as I am to admit this, I did forgive him after months and we are back together. Despite the promises he has made to change, he still has many slips. I want to come out of this cycle of being in a painful relationship but I am afraid of life without him. What should I do?

3 ways to deodorise your house

What’s cooking, Doc?It’s nice to smell the aromas of a freshly cooked hot meal during a dawat. It’s not nearly as nice when the curtains and soft furnishings smell like last week’s shutki bhorta. Nip the problem in the bud by keeping the kitchen door closed when you’re cooking. If your stove comes with a hood, that’s half your problems taken care of. If not, turn on the exhaust fan, or pop open a window inside the kitchen door to direct the smells outside. If you have an open-plan apartment where there’s no door between the kitchen and the living room, light a few aromatic candles at the entry points between the kitchen and the living room, to catch the smells before they reach those sofa cushions. After the cooking’s done, turn on all the fans in the living room, and spray it with an air freshener to remove the odours.

Powder room problemsBathrooms are the scene for many a malodorous melodrama, which is all the more reason to put effort into make them smell better. We’re not talking about the obvious methods of flushing regularly and using a good toilet bowl cleaner, or even the use of air fresheners and bathroom fragrances. There has to be an outlet for recycling air within the room, be it a bathroom exhaust fan, or a window. In the absence of both, it would be wise to install a small electric fan above the commode to circulate the air. There have been instances where a combination of pent up gases and a lit cigarette caused a fire hazard, so this is not a matter to be taken lightly. Keeping a small potted plant sometimes helps keep the air fresh.

Photos: Akhtar Furniture

It’s better to keep a bin with a lid than an open waste basket in the bathroom. Mothballs placed at the mouth of bathroom drains will reduce cockroach infestations.

Room aromaDirty laundry, stale cigarette smoke, there are any number of reasons why your bedroom isn’t smelling sweet. In the interest of reducing indoor pollution in an area you sleep in, let’s consider solutions that don’t involve adding more chemicals to the air. The key to a fragrant room is cleanliness, so you really want to clean the room. This means, going under the bed, and around the corners, and occasionally dusting behind the wardrobe. Give the fan blades a good clean every couple of months, and change your A/C filters twice a year at the very least. Don’t allow dust to accumulate; this will only lead to a nasty, musty smell. Laundry should go into a hamper, preferably one with a cover. Likewise, invest in a covered waste-basket as opposed to an open one.Add some baking soda to the water you use to mop your floors; it will eliminate odours, and kill germs. Air out your mattresses and pillows every few months, and change the sheets regularly. Not only will this prevent bed bugs and mildew, it’s also great for your back.

Finally, use aromatic candles and pot pourri to scent up your spanking clean room.

The Ebola outbreak: It can be fatal if untreated

Updated travel precautions

With the Ebola virus raging war in West Africa, airports around Asia has beefed up their security measures as the spread of the disease becomes a heightened possibility. With reports of cases found in India, Ebola is no longer just an African problem.Ebola virus disease (EVD) is not contagious like other common viruses, but it quickly spreads through direct contact with skin, blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of an infected animal or person. Recent outbreaks of Ebola virus in South Africa increased the mortality rate, but according to World Health Organization (WHO), Bangladesh is still out of risk as we are one of those least threatened countries. Nevertheless, it is always a good idea to be on the safe side and take measures to prevent this life threatening disease before it spreads on this part of the hemisphere.

SymptomsIt takes almost two to 21 days to develop the symptoms of Ebola in the infected body. However, it may seem like flu or any other disease. Other common symptoms may include: • High fever• Headache• Sore throat• Joint and muscle aches• Weakness• Stomach pain• Lack of appetite• Vomiting• Diarrhoea• Rash• Internal and external bleeding

from gums, stools, etc.

DiagnoseOften doctors may mistake it for cholera or malaria as it can be difficult to differentiate Ebola virus disease from other infectious diseases. According to WHO, tests of blood and tissues can detect EVD. Once a person is infected

PReCaUtion

If you are planning to visit a foreign country for whatever reason it may be, it is advisable to seek information about potential health risks in your chosen destination. It is required for the traveller to know the best way to protect their health and steer clear from any health threats while travelling. Before flying make sure you take the following steps to ensure a safe journey.

General precautions:• First you need to know the list of

things that you are not allowed to take in your bags and luggages. At the security gate in the airport, it may create problems if you are carrying gels, liquids, sharp knives, scissors, etc. – so do ask the administration for the updated list.

• Wear comfortable clothes, shoes or sandals – these are easy to remove when you go through security at the airport.

• If it’s a long journey, do walk sometimes to prevent blood from clotting because keeping seated for more than four hours at a stretch slows down the blood flow in your legs.

• Drink plenty of water and liquids to prevent jetlag as it changes your sleep schedule and your body’s internal clock.

• If you are afraid of flying high, do talk to your doctor because s/he may give you medicines for hypnosis, breathing, visualisation or relaxation exercises which will help you relax.

• Water, if not purified may carry the deadliest bacteria, so make sure to drink purified water while travelling.

• Drink tea, coffee and other beverages which are made with boiled water. Canned, carbonated drinks are also safe.

• Foods like raw fruits, raw vegetables, raw meat and seafood aren’t your safest bet while travelling.

• Do not forget to take your travel first aid kit.

A traveller should also be aware of accidents under the influence of drugs and alcohol, driving, mosquito bites, infections, swimming in the sea or pool, unavailable medical support during travelling a remote zone. Make sure you stay alarmed and cautious to avoid any health hazards. Have a safe trip!

with Ebola, it is important to instantly isolate him or her from the public to help stop the virus from spreading any further.

CureResearchers are still trying to find its cure and two potential vaccines are being developed and tested as of now. However, there’s still no proper treatment or licensed vaccination available for the Ebola virus disease. The primary treatment includes balancing the patient’s body fluids and electrolytes, oxygen, blood pressure, blood transfusions, etc.

PreventionThe only way to stop spreading the

infection is to stay alert and not being in touch with anyone who may be infected with the virus. Steering clear of places where Ebola virus may have existed is also a good idea. Use masks, gloves, goggles whenever anyone comes into contact with people who may have Ebola.

speakingthe universal language ofmusic

10 | Trial room

| N Anita Amreen

Q Some believe that music can provide a special

connection with God, that it is a mediator between the spiritual and the materialistic life. As a musician, poet, singer and mother what is your understanding of this ideology?

I would ask, who is this God? I don’t understand god as something very distant from us. If it were the fabric of the universe, it would mean that all of us and everything in existence are nothing but an expression of “god.” Some call it “shakti,” scientists call it “energy,” we call it Allah. We artists only get to experience this when WE are “empty.” When we surrender and allow ourselves to be possessed by something that we cant understand. Most of the time it is illusive. That’s probably why artists all seem so crazy. We all keep chasing after that moment of divine inspiration. Funny thing is we get it only when we stop wanting it!

Q Bangladesh is home to the Lalon festival as well as the

Ijtema - what makes us the ideal vessel for two such different worlds?

I think both are on opposite sides of the coin. And things are drastically tilted towards the right. Ijtema is so much larger than the Lalon festival or any cultural festival in Bangladesh. It is the second largest gathering of Muslims in the world! Because we are going through an age of information, things which have been hidden from us for a long time, are now appearing in the mainstream. Spirituality is starting to take precedence over ritualised religions because people are starting to question. Following rituals without logic is starting to feel like a trap. Philosophers like Lalon are re-emerging out of the grass roots, because people are looking for a space where there is no separation among people from different religions, ethnicities and nationalities. Bangladesh

The musical maestro reveals her thoughts on the evolution of life and spirituality

Self-proclaimed skeptic, rebel, lover and dreamer Anusheh Anadil has always been an unusually arresting musician. Known for her hugely popular stint as the lead vocalist of the folk band Bangla and her groundbreaking work with Jatra, she is now the lead singer of Bahok. This week she shares her understanding of life, of the language of love and talks about her spiritual journey in a straight-from-the-heart interview that is as soulful as her music.

is a unique place because it still carries the message of the Tantric, in spite of being divided by religions for centuries.

Q As a Bangali yourself, do you believe that we are naturally

drawn to the mystical?

Not all of us. Similar to how not all Japanese are drawn towards mysticism. I don’t think we are any more special. We are just as special as every other race.

Q In our quests for peace, love and harmony, where do you

think we, as humans go wrong?

We have become compulsive consumers. We are disconnected from nature and think that planet Earth has ample resources that “humans” are supposed to dominate and control. Religions, nationalities, class and gender differences divide us because we still can’t see that we are all part of one organism. Connected. Not divided. Everything we do affects everyone else. Everything!

Q You are the proud mother of two children – has

motherhood evolved or altered your views on life?

I think the first change that every mother feels is sudden; all the focus shifts from “me” to “them.” My centre shifts from inside of me to the outside. Now that is something powerful! The transition from “me” to “we.”

Q As someone who describes herself to be a free,

independent spirit, your journey has been inspired by many art forms - music, philosophy and folk art. How would you describe your personal style?

I guess I am naturally drawn to the esoteric arts. It is part of my search for more understanding. My personal style is wearing a big smile before I go out to face the world.

“My heart can take on any form:A meadow for gazelles,A cloister for monks,For the idols, sacred ground,Ka’ba for the circling pilgrim,The tables of the Torah,The scrolls of the Quran.

My creed is Love;Wherever its caravan turns along the way,That is my belief,My faith.”

Fall transitionsAs the weather starts to get chillier, but still too warm for sweaters, here are some tips for transitioning your wardrobe into Fall.

Chambray ChicToo warm for a jacket? Use a chambray or denim shirt instead. Roll up the cuffs and leave it unbuttoned, and it functions just like a jacket. Layer on over your tee or tank, or wear it to add warmth to your sleeveless kameez, or even in lieu of a cardigan over your sari; this garment is extremely versatile, and allows for plenty of experimentation.

Poncho-ghorAnother extremely versatile item that’s been making rounds on all the global catwalks is the poncho. Fold and drape over your shoulders as you would a shawl if you want to add a layer of cover over your kameez or jeans. Wear a long poncho as a sweater dress by belting it and adding leggings. If you’re buying new ones, look for graphic, geometric and tribal prints, as these are all the rage. Some ponchos have built-in turtlenecks. Dress one up with a statement necklace, and you can take it out to party.

Big, big bootiesAnkle boots are finally, finally a thing in Dhaka, and we couldn’t be happier. Wear em with jeans or leggings, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, even with the midi-length shalwars that seem to be making rounds this season. Find your perfect pair at any Bata or Apex outlet.

When in doubt, go with black

With Ashura on the way and many women looking to wear the darkest of colours, SadaKalo is where they should pay a visit. Since 2002, SadaKalo now has five outlets and is also a part of Deshidosh, a name that anyone who knows their local brands is familiar with. What really makes them stand out from the masses is the fact that they produce clothing in two monochromatic colours - black and white, as the name suggests. They also carry a vast array of menswear, so ladies remember to take your partners along.

It might seem difficult to make the change between office wear and after hours outfits, but having more to work with is actually a good thing. To get a clearer picture we’ve got several boxes to check off for a better autumn term at the office.

1. You’ve got to add pop to the denim. You can go from an office look to a semi-formal look by simply getting rid of the tie, if you’ve got yourself some quality jeans. To stand out from the crowd, try choosing a vivid shirt-and-tie combination. All of this will complement the neutral blazer you choose to wear with the rest of the look.

2. As mentioned, take away the tie and you’ll become more versatile. Keep the work suit on but swap the dress shirt with a crew neck sweater. The sophistication remains, while comfort takes a front seat. Make sure the sweater

is of lighter fabrics or keep this idea in mind when the days get colder.

3. Break out of the norm with subtle hints of patterns. Going safe keeps things solid but you’ll be able to wear the same colour all over by adding a different shade in the mix. Even wearing all black, technically, is never the same shade of one colour. Wearing slate-grey trousers with a slate-grey checked suit jacket makes the exact statement we’re going for. It’s all about visual texture in this look.

4. Get reintroduced to the button-down shirts. Neutrals with no patterns, in the more popular styles of collars, like spread collars and the usual short-arrowed collars, make for a steady work-to-relax style arsenal. Wearing a skinny or slim

tie with a spread collar is still one of the coolest fashion

statements you can make.5. There’s

nothing wrong with putting

together a new bag collection. With so many online stores to choose from, and the

gift of Amazon, don’t be afraid to shop for a smooth and streamlined bag. Laptop

bags are fine, but boring. Mix things up on days where the laptop stays at home or at the office,

while the other necessities are being carried in something more, well, attractive.

I wore a white dinner jacket to my brother’s wedding a couple of

months ago. Now, my boss’ daughter is having a formal event. Do you think it’s appropriate to wear the same white jacket to the event in the evening?

There’s been this silly rule about wearing certain colours during given times

of the day. It’s true that there is a dress code for each occasion but some things are clearer than most. Your white dinner jacket is a standout item from your closet. Wearing all black, in most cases, is acceptable but choosing to wear white during the evening is something we would actually encourage. Not only will you get noticed instantly, but people will admire that you’ve chosen to go against the grain. If the invitation or the host of the shindig makes it clear that you must wear certain colours, well then you’ll have to save the white for another occasion.

I know fashion for men has drastically changed over the years, but I still

can’t get around to wearing the colour pink. Not sure if it’s my subconscious dismissing it as emasculating or the colour simply doesn’t look good on me. Am I going wrong somewhere?

There’s nothing wrong with wearing pink. Ultimately, at the end of the day, you

have to wear what makes you feel comfortable. And it might also be true that the colour isn’t too flattering with your skin tone. Have you tried different shades of pink? Sometimes it takes the right tone and texture to actually make certain colours look good. Whether you have an uncomfortable perspective towards something in fashion, simply avoid it. But it’s perfectly fine for any guy to be wearing pink.

Autumn office guide (part 1)

Totally exposed

Sunscreen is one item every man in Bangladesh should never be without. Even the slightest exposure to the sun affects us in the long run. Not a big deal? You’re used to it? Then, you’d be fooling yourself. Harmful sunrays spare no one, no matter the colour of your skin. You’re pretty much susceptible to skin cancer. Yes, it’s very serious business, gentlemen. Whatever the season, that means winter too, SPF in moisturisers are a necessity. Check out the top three lotions with SPF.

Nivea for Men Skin Essentials SPF 15 Protective LotionHere’s another oil-free, vitamin-enriched body moisturiser. This will be a little over Tk2,600. Not only does this moisturise, it protects you against very harmful UV rays. And you really only need a very tiny amount of it to apply to your skin for the best protection without clogging pores.

Jack Black SPF 45 Sun Guard SunscreenMost lotions for men are oily or greasy, which is something you should always avoid. This wonderful lotion is oil-free and absorbs right into the skin, making you feel as if you’re not wearing anything at all. Not only that, this is highly sweat and water resistant. So it doesn’t matter how ridiculously hot it is in Dhaka, this is a long lasting product. This magnificent item will cost you around Tk2,700.

Neutrogena SPF 20 Triple Protect Face Lotion for MenLike Jack Black, this brand is well-known for making fantastic men’s skincare products. This has an overall protection factor to it. It sooths razor burns, heals dry skin, protects you against wrinkles and signs of ageing, and more importantly, fends off those harmful sunrays. You can get a pack of four for about Tk2,600.All of these can be bought from Amazon via Backpackbang.com.If that’s too much of a fuss, you can always hit the isles of Meena Bazaar and get a SPF 30 or SPF 40 Neutrogena sun block for Tk1,000.

Score the prettiest pout

It’s widely available at all drugstores, and beauty salons buy it in bulk for their fair polish treatments. Who knew that hydrogen peroxide could be your secret beauty weapon? Here are five ways you can get its benefits.

Zit zapperIf you find yourself out of acne medication, you can use this to treat your pimples. First remove all traces of makeup, and wash your face. Let it dry completely, and then soak some cotton balls in 3% hydrogen peroxide. Dab lightly over the affected area. Wait ten minutes, and then apply some moisturiser to counteract the peroxide’s drying effect.

Add some shine to your smileDilute some hydrogen peroxide in water (the ratio should have equal parts lukewarm water and 3% 2HO). Swirl it around your mouth, being extremely careful not to swallow, and then spit it out. Not only will it kill the bacteria in your mouth, it will whiten your teeth and prevent canker sores.

Sparkly talonsIf you find your nails getting dull and yellow, give them a good buffing, and then dab them lightly with cotton balls soaked in 3% hydrogen peroxide. Follow up with a good hand lotion. Your nails will be shiny and white in no time.

The mane highlightCan’t afford a salon visit? Here’s how you get some easy breezy natural-looking highlights. Mix equal parts of lukewarm water and 3% hydrogen peroxide and decant into a spray bottle. Spray lightly over wet hair and finger comb through so it goes from root to tip. Hydrogen peroxide has bleaching properties, so will naturally lighten parts of your hair and create highlights.

Foot bathThe dirty streets of Dhaka make the feet of any pedestrian a hotbed for germs and toxins. Add a cup of hydrogen peroxide to a warm foot bath and soak your feet in it. Not only will this kill the bugs, it will prevent foot fungus, and who doesn’t love a soothing foot bath?

Step 5 Place a tissue lightly on your lips and brush them over with a fluffy powder brush dipped in the translucent variety.

Step 6Apply another layer of lipstick.

Step 7Dip a blending eye-shadow brush into a powder blush, similar to the shade of lipstick you picked. Go over your lips, working the powder in.

Step 8You’re done and are sporting one of the most sought after looks. Enjoy those envious stares.

With the weather cooling down after the arrival of fall, this week, we give you the guide to achieving a velvety finish pucker at home. One of the hottest trends this season, this one is as easy as 1 2 3 and will make you look like a million bucks.

Step 1Exfoliate your lips before you try this look as even the slightest trace of flakes will ruin the over all effect. Moisturise with your favourite balm afterwards.

Step 2 Apply a make-up primer or concealer to your mouth and give it a few moments to set. You want to make sure your lips do not feel sticky before you start applying colour.

Step 3Use a lip liner to line and fill in your lips. This will ensure that your lipstick stays put.

Step 4Pick your favourite shade of berry lipstick and apply a coat. It needn’t be matte, as the next few steps will ensure it is.

The tantric master’s wife had to turn herself into a flying tigress to carry him to Bhutan, or so the legend goes. The rugged land was just that hard to access. But you don’t have to go that far back; as recently as the early seventies, almost no one could enter Bhutan. There were only two entry points and they were notoriously difficult to access. So, visiting the kingdom that has deliberately kept itself a secret for centuries, is one of the greatest privileges a modern traveller can have

The land of the Flying Tiger

The perksEndless green vistas, a serenity that has to be experienced to be believed, and some of the cleanest air in the world, what the country lacks in terms of modern conveniences, it makes up for with atmosphere. There aren’t many roads, true, but there’s also no traffic, no loud music, no light pollution, no ugly billboards. The jade hills are dotted with charming buildings that maintain their centuries-old design aesthetics, giving the whole place a fairytale feeling

Tiger’s Nest, ParoSave this one for the last if you want to leave with an indelible impression of your visit. Hanging off the edge of a precipitous cliff some 3000m above the Paro valley is the Taktsang Palphug monastery. As you finish the climb, lungs bursting, legs burning, to an indescribable view, it’s not hard to believe the stories of Guru Padmasambhava riding on the back of a flying tiger to reach this cave of solitude. You can choose to trek the whole way up, or rent a pony for the equivalent of $16.32 to give you an hour’s head start.

The CostsYou can bag a 3 nights-4days all-inclusive (airfare+accommodation+food+sightseeing) trip for as low as approximatelyTk45,000 per head (with discounts for larger groups). The best part? No visas required.

What to pack:• Layers - the temperature can

change dramatically with elevation, and a lot of the sites you’ll be visiting have religious significance and will require a cover up

• Comfortable trekking shoes. Everything involves a climb

• A comprehensive toiletries kit. “4 stars” in Bhutan doesn’t translate to free hotel toiletries

YES NO

Is this the right trip for me?

• You enjoy trekking. Plenty of trails to explore

• You don’t have trouble with stairs, or climbing in general. In a hilly country like this, climbing is unavoidable

• History and culture interests you. All the sites focus strongly on Buddhist religious iconography

• You’re not a fussy eater - the food is similar to deshi home-cooking, with not much variety

• You like the quiet solitude

• Youhaveaknee/heartproblem-thosestairsandtrekswillbetorture

The highlightsThere are two cities accessible by and accommodating of tourists - Paro, and the capital city, Thimphu. In a typical 4 day/3 night package, you can cover the following sites:

Rinpung Dzong, ParoA 17th century monastic fortress. Overlooking the fierce Pachu River, the Dzong encompasses some 14 shrines and chapels, colourfully adorned with ancient wall murals and Buddhist iconography.

Buddha Point, ThimphuAlthough still under construction, the majestic Buddha Dordenma statue is already open to tourists. Cast in bronze and gilded in gold, the 51.5m statue, when completed, will house thousands of smaller statues. As of now, it gazes serenely down at the visitors who walk to the edge of the site to snap selfies against the backdrop of a breathtaking view of all of Thimphu. On the way back, you can also make a quick stop at the Mini Zoo which houses the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal.

Tashichho Dzong, Thimphu Another monastic fortress, this awe-inspiring building, built on the western bank of the Wang Chu, is the seat of Bhutan’s government. The beautiful rose gardens lining the entryway, and the triple-tiered gold roofs sitting atop simple, white-washed towers are an interesting juxtaposition of the austere and the grand.

• You have a knee/heart problem - those stairs and treks will be torture

• You’re looking for fancy nightlife. Umm nope. Try Singapore

• You’re a shopaholic. Barring from a number of handicraft stores and the Royal Textile Museum, there’s not much shopping to do here

recipe

Spicy beef curryOozing with natural spices, this recipe is the perfect rendition to feast on this Ashura

| Tasmia Momin

The day of Ashura is spent fasting and feeding the people in need. For most occasions, people prepare at least one special beef dish that can satisfy everyone’s tastebud - and it usually does. This week we share with you a special beef recipe that can easily turn into a dinner staple. This is an authentic curry dish that originates from over centuries ago. The recipe is one that you won’t find over the internet; but it’s quite popular among South Asian families. Sub-continental curries aren’t the easiest of recipes to pull off but they are definitely worth the time and effort. The fusion of the natural spices from the region adds a type of cultural essence to it and even though the recipe differs marginally from one neighbouring country to another, one can always recognise it on the first taste.

This particular recipe was developed from several trial and error sessions and was later coupled with the basics I learned from my mom.
