It was her 39th birthday.“I’m going to enjoy this birthday

because it’s going to be awhile before Iadmit to forty,” although she laughed andkidded about it, he was prettysure she meant it.

What was about a woman andthe age of 40?

Did 40 make her less attrac-tive?

Did it change her from beingyoung and vibrant to somethingelse?

This didn’t happen to him tillhe reached 50. Now that was a trauma. But40?

However if she wanted to be 39 for awhile it was ok with him since he would bedealing with an ever-younger-wife.

“Why don’t we make this real special?”He suggested that they suggest to their

teen age daughter that she stay overnightwith her best friend who lived next doorand they could spent the evening alone

with their fantasies. No sooner thought and it was done!He went out and bought that special

blend of champagne, like the one they hadordered on their honeymoon.

He also said he would takecare of dinner, which he did bybuying two capons at the gour-met shop plus all the nice sideswith it.

Sprang for two dozen roses tobe delivered right when they satdown to dinner.Like a dream-come true.

Everything worked out perfectly. Adream come true.

“Honey,” she said, “I know that this isjust perfect, my age is 39 and you can bewhatever age you want to be, it will take along time for me to admit to 40.”

A month later she went to the doctor fora check up. Came back with advancedlung cancer.

She remained 39…..forever.

Sponges come in several varieties. Some are natural and come from the sea. They are usually large and soft withtremendous capacity and absorbency.Others are synthetic. They come in differ-ent sizes with different degrees ofabsorbency.

Human beings share some of the samecharacteristics the sponge possesses. Theyare capable of absorbing and soaking- upmany things in their environments and intheir lives. And, just like a sponge, humanbeings can reach their capacity.

You may reach a point where you can-not absorb anymore. You cannot take inone more thing in your life. When a spongehas absorbed too much it becomes heavyand useless. If you try to use it the excessliquid seeps out. When you become toofull of things, you may become heavy anduseless. Your own liquid may seep out astears.

Unlike a sponge you can control howmuch you let in and absorb in your life. You need to recognize your capacity andcontrol the input. No one can tell youwhen you have had too much. Only youknow. Every sponge and every individualhas a different capacity.

If you find yourself crying, you maybe too full. If you feel overwhelmed, youmay be too full. If you feel depressed, anx-ious or fearful you may be too full. If youforget important things or appointmentsyou may be too full. If you have difficultyconcentrating and staying focused or mak-ing decisions, you are probably too full. You need to wring yourself out and lessenthe overload. Do things that take the pres-sure off.

You can let a sponge sit for a while andit will dry out and be useful again. Youshould also sit for a while and just rest. Goto another place mentally. Whenever youchange your thoughts, it changes your emo-tions and feelings. Take charge and makesome changes in your life. Put up some bar-riers. Don’t let everyone and everything in.Control what you absorb.

Since becoming CEO of theDolphins and Sun Life Stadium, Deehas focused on assembling a sound, smart and tough football team;enhancing the fan experience; andactively participating in the commu-nity.

Tackling some of the team’srecent big decisions, Deeannounced, “Ryan Tannehill will beour starting quarterback. Ryan reallyunderstands the offense; he’s wisebeyond his years; and he ‘eats, sleeps and breathes’ football. Thisseason, we’re going to play anexciting brand of football and theschedule is favorable for us tomake some noise!

Talking Super Bowl, Deeexplained Sun Life Stadium is bid-ding for the 50th anniversary SuperBowl game in 2016, which coincideswith the Dolphins 50th anniversaryseason. “It would be great to cele-brate these two milestones together

in South Florida. We’re also in avery competitive situation for futurecollege championship games that arevery important economic drivers andabove all - very prestigious eventspositioning this community as oneof the world’s premier sports desti-nations.

“We’re going to take a leadershiprole working with you to ensure wecontinue attracting these games. We were fortunate to have ten outof the first 46 Super Bowls playedhere – and we want ten of the next50. To do that, we’re going to haveto pull together and put our best footforward.”

At the recent Republican NationalConvention, Marco Rubio joked ofPresident Obama, “By all accounts, he is agood husband, a good father…and thanksto lots of practice, a pretty good golfer.”Obama is not alone as nearly every presi-dent over the past century has been a golfer. The exceptions since Taft (1912) wereTruman, Hoover and Carter. WoodrowWilson, whose health generally was poor, golfed regularly as president for exercise onthe recommendation of his physician, “buttook little pleasure in the game he definedas ‘an ineffectual attempt to put an elusiveball into an obscure hole with implementsill-adapted to that purpose.’” His averagefor 18 holes was about 115. TeddyRoosevelt, concerned that golf appearedelite to many voters, cautioned his protégéeTaft in 1908, “never to be photographedplaying golf.” Truman, a poker player, alsobelieved that golf “was a political noose.”

Nixon, a sharp poker player, played golf inthe low 90’s. According to McCatchy Newsreporter Steven Thomma, “Reagan playedonce a year, whereas Clinton played often –and inflated his skills on his scorecard.”

Often accused by his political oppo-nents as neglecting his duties, Eisenhowerwas “the most devoted golfer, playingroughly 800 times in his eight years as pres-ident, averaging in the 80’s” The U.S. GolfAssociation installed a putting green forhim near the White House Rose Garden.Kennedy, despite a chronically ailing back, was a superb golfer, averaging in the high70’s or low 80’s. Johnson, who enjoyedtaking guests on 90-mph rides around hisranch in his Lincoln Continental, alsogolfed, but unlike his two immediate prede-cessors (Kennedy and Eisenhower), kepthis score secret. Both Bushes played golf, however, George W. said that he gave upgolf in time of war in 2003, “in solidaritywith the families of soldiers who weredying in Iraq.” Although Harding playedgolf twice a week, his more enjoyable activ-ities included poker in the White Housewith his “Ohio Gang,” and “sneaking off toa burlesque house in Washington, where hehid behind a curtain so the public would notsee him.”

Hyundai Motor America recently invitedme to Austin, TX, to preview a pair of new2013 models — the Veloster Turbo and theElantra GT. Both are key elements of inHyundai’s ambitious 7/11 product initiative, which will see seven new or redesignedmodels produced in the next 11 months.

When I first drove the Veloster last year,my biggest complaint was that it was under-powered. Now, with the addition of the new1.6-liter 201 hp Turbocharged-GasolineDirect Injection (T-GDI) engine mated toeither a six-speed automatic or manualtransmission, that complaint no longer isvalid. The added power makes all the differ-ence in the performance of this little three-door coupe, transforming it into a powerful,high-tech and fuel-efficient vehicle.

With its precise power-to-weight ratio, unique sport-tuned steering and suspension

hardware set, the Veloster Turbo willcompete very well with the likes of theVolkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si andMini Cooper/Clubman S.

Extras such as unique 18-inch alloywheels with chrome inserts, projectionheadlights with LED accents, side mirrorswith turn signal indicators, unique LEDtaillights and leather seating surfaces willhelp make the Veloster Turbo a big hitwith the next generation of young buyers. The Turbo exclusive Graphite Black inte-rior with blue accents and headlinergraphics only adds to its attractiveness tothe youth market.

ELANTRA GT DEBUTSI also test drove the all-new 2013

Elantra GT during my visit to Austin. Thelineup now includes the Elantra Coupeintroduced earlier this year and the popu-lar Elantra Sedan, voted as the 2012North American Car of the Year.

The Elantra GT is based on Hyundai’snew-generation i30 model designed forthe European market. With its five-doorfunctionality and European drivingdynamics, it is indeed a fun-to-drivecompact hatchback.

The 2013 Elantra GT will competewith the Ford Focus, Mazda3 andVolkswagen Golf, but has more interiorroom and better fuel economy.

Powered by an advanced 1.8-liter148 hp four-cylinder engine mated toHyundai’s six-speed automatic ormanual transmission, it delivers 28mpg in the city and 39 mpg on thehighway.

The new Elantra GT represents evenmore evolution in Hyundai’s “FluidicSculpture” design technology. TheElantra GT has a slippery .30 coefficientof drag and everything about the vehicleis aerodynamic, from the aggressive pro-file and low overall height, to the sleekside mirrors. Even the tire gaps havebeen minimized and the rocker panelsare streamlined to help lower windresistance, which translates into betterfuel economy and a smoother ride.

The City of Aventura always honors an“Officer of the Month” – so perhaps thereshould be more awards bestowed aroundtown for outstanding performance in lead-ing roles like these: Most Valuable Valets: The race for whodeserves this honor the most should be wonbe all the Aventura valets who never get allthe same model Mercedes confused; andhelp you up with your groceries withoutever breaking eggs or letting your icecream melt! Super Cashiers: Supermarket cashierswho scan the fastest and encourage peopleto take their coupon complaints to the cus-tomer service desk deserve special recogni-tion – especially if they remind you thatyou can get the “buy one get one free” bar-gain you didn’t know about!Terrific Order Takers: Everyone whoregularly calls favorite restaurants to placetake-out orders would surely agree, all the

people who answer the phone and actuallyremember what you like to order withoutyou having to tell them really deserve amedal…Just try not to ever start orderingsomething different since this could sparktraumatic confusion and questions aboutwhy you’re not having “the usual.” Best Baristas: Just like terrific order tak-ers, the best baristas around town whoalways make your coffee drink just the wayyou like it should get memory medals forrecalling: “No whip, skinny, decaf, 3 shots,2 Splendas, room on top, extra caramel, extra hot!” Savvy Stockers: Whenever the most popu-lar brand, flavor or size you want most isn’tsold out - while there are still hundreds ofless desirable items still available, the storestockers should be commended for stayingon top of consumer demand – and neverever placing what you’re trying to reach onthe highest top shelf! Excellent Elected Officials: Members ofthe Aventura City Commission win theaward for being the best when it comes topublic service - and since just like ClintEastwood, they often talk to “empty chairs”at City Commission meetings - this reallyproves that when a city is being run so well,no one really needs to fill the seats!

Stereotypes come in all forms. Evenwith music. I can’t tell you how often I geta blank stare when I tell folks I like coun-try music.

The other day, while listening to my localcountry music station 99.9, Kiss Country, ithit me... I would like a man like many ofthose characterized in country songs!

No...NOT the dude who goes out with his

dirty boots on. Not the guy who fishes all day

only to ignore his woman when and IF he

comes home. Not the guy who drinks himself

under the bar only to stagger home to his

faithful old dog RATHER than a woman.NOT THOSE GUYS... The OTHER

ones.I want a man like the one who says he’ll

do what he has to do to win you over; theman who says he would feed your dreamsand starve your fears. (Over, by BlakeShelton)

The man who tells his son to pray and tohonor his family.

The man who reminds himself to listento the voices of his mother, father andgrandparents reminding him to be an hon-est, kind, loving and true and who keepshis word. (I Hear Voices, Chris Young)

The man who stands and looks in themirror asking God to make him a betterman for the woman in his life. (The Man IWant to Be, also Chris Young)

The man who takes his woman out ondates but can’t wait to get her home and gether out of her black dress (Getting’ YouHome, also by Chris Young)

I absolutely LOVE hearing DariusRucker remind us that every bad relation-ship paves the way for the one that makesyour heart pound and your knees go weakbecause it leads you to where you are sup-posed to be (This, Darius Rucker).

Hearing Billy Currington croon aboutfalling so hard for his woman he’s almostfearful, singing...”You’re looking like anangel lying on a blanket with a halo ofhair...once I taste that kiss, I know what’llhappen I’ll be at the mercy of you...” Dothese guys truly exist or are they figmentsof our country music imagination?

Well, I’m going to believe they are outthere. I’m also just crazy enough tobelieve that somehow, someway, I amgoing to be a presenter at the CMA awards!Anything is possible - right?

The last three months of the year —October, November and December — boastthe three most consecutive budget-bustingholidays of them all, with All Hallows Eve,commonly known as Halloween, kickingoff the list of expensive festivities.

According to the National RetailFederation 2011 report, consumers spentabout $6.8 billion on Halloween activitieswith the average person spending $72.31.The bulk of Halloween dollars spent lastyear was on handing out candy (73.5 per-cent), decorating the home or yard (49.5percent) and carving a pumpkin (47.8percent).

Although not among the top threeexpenses in terms of Halloween spending, dressing in costume accounts for 43.9 per-

cent of spending, slightly less than thefunds spent for carving pumpkins.

Halloween is a fun holiday indeed, but itdoesn’t have to drain your financial reser-voir. There are many ways to reduceunnecessary spending that will ensure asuccessful holiday.

Here’s a list of simple tips and ideasabout how to make this a fun holiday with-out excessive costs.

CandyShop early. Chances are you’ll find the

best deals. Buy In bulk. The more you buy, the

more you save.Buy generic. It costs a lot less than the

“name brands.”

DecoratingDo It yourself. Avoid expensive décor.Shop at thrift stores. They often have

great décor at cut-rate prices

CarvingDo It Yourself. It’s a lot more fun.

“Will I have pain after surgery, Doc?” is acommon question most patients ask beforehaving an operation. Post-surgical pain isoften an unavoidable part of recovery — andmanaging the pain is one of the most com-mon concerns for patients. That is, untilrecently. Mount Sinai Medical Center nowoffers ultrasound-guided nerve blockers tominimize and, in some cases, eliminate post-operative pain all together.

While there are various modalities to man-age pain, ultrasound-guided nerve block isone of the most exciting developments in thearea of post-surgical pain management. Thenerve blocks work by interrupting pain sig-nals travelling from the area of surgery to thebrain. Although nerve blocks are commonlyused pain relievers, ultrasound-guided nerveblocking has only recently gained attentionbecause it allows for site-specific targetedpain control.

Dr. Murlikrishna Kannan, ClinicalDirector of Regional Anesthesia at MountSinai, uses the ultrasound to guide the place-ment of a fine needle that deposits localanesthesia around the nerve. The anesthesiabathes the nerve and blocks it from transmit-ting painful sensations to the brain. The pro-

cedure is painless, safe, accurate and fast, taking as little as ten to fifteen minutes tocomplete. The nerve block results in littlemore than a “numb and sleepy leg,” asdescribed by patients, and usually lasts forten to twelve hours.

With the arrival of this new method forpain relief, orthopaedic patients at MountSinai are very comfortable after surgery andrequire less morphine during their hospitalstay. Decreasing the dosage of morphinereduces a wide range of complications, including nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, low blood pressure, confusionand hallucinations. The pain relief alsoallows patients to ambulate, or walk, hoursafter total joint replacement, something thatwas impossible when severe pain was a fac-tor after surgery, yet extremely important forthe healing process.

Pain can cause a variety of otheradverse effects, such as delaying post-surgical recovery and reducing the fullbenefit of the procedure. Excessive paincan also cause stress and anxiety, whichcan precipitate erratic blood pressure andeven heart attacks. Pain also preventspatients from getting out of their bed.

When patients stay in bed too long aftersurgery, they can develop pressure sores, lung infections and blood clots in thelegs, a condition known as deep veinthrombosis. It is easy to understand whyeffective pain control after surgery hasbecome very important.

With ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, patients enjoy faster recovery, and move onto rehabilitation in as little as two days aftersurgery. And, it gives patients the answerthey want to hear about post-surgical pain:“Rest easy, you should experience little or nopain after this procedure.”

For more information on pain-free surgery,call 305-674-CARE (2273).

ABOUT DR. MURLIKRISHNA KANNAN:Dr. Kannan has been an anesthesiologist

for ten years and is a board certified anes-thesiologist in India, England and theUnited States. He is currently involved inperforming ultrasound-guided nerveblocks for patients undergoing orthopaedicand podiatry surgery. Dr Kannan is alsoinstrumental in teaching other anesthesiol-ogists how to perform ultrasound-guidednerve blocks.

Dr. Kannan, Clinical Director of Regional Anesthesia atMount Sinai, uses the ultrasound machine shown hereto place nerve blocks that help patients experience nopain post-surgery.
