1. Traditional Christmas Program and Luncheon - All parishioners are invited to attend a special Ukrainian Christmas Nativity Play with caroling immediately afterward presented by the children of the Saturday School of Ukrainian Studies and Religious Ed. Program on Sunday, January 5, 2020. Divine Liturgy at 10 AM, Christmas Program and Traditional Luncheon will be following. Please come and enjoy our festive and beautiful Ukrainian traditions.

2. Parish Membership - We welcome all our visitors and guests who worship at St. Nicholas. 3. Usher / Money Counter Schedule for 2020 – will be completed soon. We always welcome new volunteers; no experience is required. Please contact Fr. 5. The End of the Year - As we approach the end of the year, you may wish to review your offering envelopes to see if you postponed or overlooked any that you want to make up before the books are closed on December 31, 2019.

6. Offering Envelopes & Calendars - Offering envelopes and calendars for year 2020 are available in the church hall. Donation of $3 for a calendar will be appreciated.

7. Offering Envelopes If you do not have offering envelopes this year, please drop a note with your name and address in the collection basket. Also, we ask that parishioners who have reached adulthood and/or finished school to drop a note in the collection basket so that we can prepare your own offering envelopes this year. 11. Unique Christmas Gifts – This holiday season, please consider giving the gift of your time and talent, while reaping happiness at the same time! We are looking for individuals, pairs/couples or families to donate a small amount of time to help with these ministries:

1) Delivering donated food items to local food pantries (suitable for volunteers from either liturgy, less than 1 hour, once per month)

2) Delivering left over bread products to Joseph’s House (suitable for volunteers from the second liturgy, about 30 minutes, once per month)

3) Becoming an usher/money counter for either liturgy (suitable for pairs/couples, about 30 minutes, once every 5-6 weeks)

12. Snow Day – In case of extremely hazardous snowy or icy conditions on Sundays there will be only one Divine Liturgy at 11:00 am.

13. Food for the Poor - The Watervliet-Green Island Food Pantry is preparing for the Holidays. Donations of canned and boxed foods are needed. God has blessed us with many gifts, let us share our blessings with others and, in this way, we give thanks to God for all He gives to us.

14. Bequests-In making out your will, kindly remember St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.

15. Proper Church Attire: Church is a sacred place with its traditions. When we come to worship we should respect those traditions. Today we would like to emphasize church attire. Our clothes should be modest and tasteful. Inappropriate attire such as jeans, shorts, sneakers, tight pants, mid-thigh dresses and skirts, low cut blouses can be perceived as disrespectful and could be offensive to other worshipers. Thank you for your consideration.

January 1 - Circumcision of Our Lord, God & Savior-Jesus Christ

January 1 is celebrated the world over as the secular New Year. With festivity and frivolity we toast in the New Year. But to the Church, it is the Feast Day of the Circumcision of our Lord on his 8th day of life (being 8 days after Holy Nativity). It is also the Feast Day of the Holy Patriarch, St. Basil the Great. And finally, it is the day that Christ received his name, “Jesus,” at his circumcision.

On the eighth day after His Nativity, our Lord Jesus Christ -- in accordance with the Old Testament Law, accepted circumcision, which was decreed for all infants of the male gender as a sign of the Covenant of God with the Forefather Abraham and his descendants (Gen. 17: 10-14, Lev. 12: 3). Upon the performing of this ritual the Divine Infant was given the name Jesus, which had been

announced by the Archangel Gabriel on the day of the Annunciation to the Most Holy Virgin Mary (Lk. 1: 31-33, 2: 21). According to the explanation of the fathers of the Church the Lord, the Creator of the Law, accepted circumcision, giving example for people how faithfully the Divine ordinances ought to be fulfilled. The Lord accepted circumcision for this reason -- so that later on no one should be in doubt that He was truly Man, rather than merely being the bearer of illusion-seeming flesh as certain heretics (Docetism) happened to teach. In the New Testament (Covenant) the ritual of circumcision gave way to the sacrament of Baptism, which it pre-figured (Col. 2: 11-12). Accounts about the feastday of the Circumcision of the Lord in the Eastern Church continue right up through the IV Century. The Canon of the feast was written by the Monk Stephen Savvaites (Comm. 28 October and 13 July). Together with the Circumcision, accepted by the Lord as a sign of the Covenant of God with mankind, He received also the Name Jesus (Saviour) as the seal of His service -- the deed of the Salvation of the world (Mt. 1: 21; Mk. 9: 38-39, 16: 17; Lk. 10: 17; Acts 3: 6, 16; Phil. 2: 9-10). These two events, the Circumcision and Naming, remind Christians that they have entered into a New Covenant (Testament) with God and "are circumcised with a circumcision not done by hand, in putting off the sinful body of the flesh, by the Circumcision of Christ" (Col. 2: 11). The very name "Christian" witnesses to an entrance of mankind into a New Covenant with God.

10. Різдвяний Дарунок– в часі святкування Різдва Ісуса Христа – Божого Дару для людей, ми радіючи приносимо дари один для одного. Ми пропонуємо Вам подарувати трішки вашого часу для нашої Церкви. Одноосібно чи сім’єю, подаруйте свій час допомагаючи нам у наступних служіннях:

Reading of the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians (Gal. 1,11-19): Brethren: I want you to know that the gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you heard of my former way of life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it, and progressed in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my race, since I was even more a zealot for my ancestral traditions. But when [God], who from my mother's womb had set me apart and called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him to the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, rather, I went into Arabia and then returned to Damascus. Gospel: (Matt 2:13-23): When the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet: “A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more.”

Hymn to the Mother of God: O my soul, magnify Christ the King born in a manger. До Галатян послання св. апостола Павла читання (Гал 1,11-19): Браття, звістую вам, що Євангелія, яку я вам проповідував, не є за людською мірою; бо ж я її не прийняв, ані навчився від людини, лише - через об’явлення Ісуса Христа. Ви чули про мою поведінку колись у юдействі, про те, як я несамовито гонив Божу Церкву та руйнував її. Я перевищував у юдействі багатьох ровесників з мого роду, бувши запеклим прихильником передань моїх предків. Та коли той, що вибрав мене вже від утроби матері моєї і покликав своєю благодаттю, зволив об’явити в мені Сина свого, щоб я проповідував його між поганами, то я негайно, ні з ким не радившись, ані подавшися в Єрусалим до тих, що були апостолами передо мною, пішов в Арабію, а потім знову повернувся в Дамаск. По трьох роках, по тому пішов я в Єрусалим відвідати Кифу і перебув у нього п’ятнадцять день. А іншого з апостолів я не бачив, крім Якова, брата Господнього.

Євангеліє: (Mат 2,13-23): Втой час, як вирушили мудреці в дорогу, ангел Господній з’явився у сні Йосифові й каже: “Устань, візьми дитятко і його матір, і втікай в Єгипет, і перебудь там, поки я тобі не скажу, бо Ірод розшукуватиме дитя, щоб його вбити.” Вставши Йосиф, узяв уночі дитятко та його матір і пішов у Єгипет, де перебув до смерти Ірода, щоб збулося сказане Господом через пророка: “З Єгипту я покликав мого сина.” Тоді Ірод, побачивши, що мудреці з нього насміялись, розлютився вельми й послав повбивати у Вифлеємі й по всій його окрузі всіх дітей, що мали менше, ніж два роки, згідно з часом, що пильно вивідав був від мудреців. Тоді справдилось те, що сказав був пророк Єремія: “В Рамі чути голос, плач і тяжке ридання: то Рахиль плаче за дітьми своїми й не хоче, щоб її втішити, бо їх немає.” .........

Замість Достойно: Величай, душе моя, у вертепі народженого Царя – Христа. Ірмос (глас 1): Таїнство чудне бачу і преславне: небо – вертеп, престол херувимський – Діву, ясла – вмістилище, в яких возліг невмістимий Христос Бог. Його оспівуючи величаємо.

Причасний: Хваліте Господа з небес, хваліте Його на висотах (Пс 148,1). Алилуя (х3).

За Галицьким звичаєм співаємо: Всесвіт днесь радістю сповняється, Христос родився від Діви. Замість “Ми бачили світло істинне…” (x1) “Нехай сповняться уста…” (x3) і “Нехайбуде ім’я…” (x3).
