FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK On the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, we celebrate the manifesta on of Christ to the whole world. This feast underscores a central truth of our Catholic faith, and that is the universal saving will of God…in the words of St. Paul’s le er to St. Timothy: God “wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth (I Timothy 2:4).” In today’s second reading from his le er to the Ephesians, St. Paul puts it this way: “it has now been revealed [in Christ] to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gen les are coheirs [with the Jews], members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” The story of the pagan magi following the star all the way to the manger to adore the newborn Jesus and to present him with gi s t for a king illustrates this truth. The message here is clear and inclusive: every member of the human race is caught up in the mystery of the Incarna on. As a result of God becoming human in Christ, each and every human being has an incomparable dignity and should be treated as such. All people share in the mystery of the God-man and should hear and spread the good news of a world redeemed. The revela on of God in human form impels us Chris ans to the work of evangeliza on, to spread the gospel of love and mercy to all those we meet. As disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are all commissioned to speak and act in a way that draws others to Christ and his Church. If you are looking for a New Year’s resolu on, how about commi ng yourself to invite a non-prac cing Catholic or two to join you for a Sunday Mass? Or maybe you can resolve to tell an estranged Catholic rela ve or friend why your faith and parish are so important to you. Or perhaps you can resolve to establish a daily rou ne of personal prayer, se ng aside as li le as 10 minutes a day to be quiet and converse only with the Lord. In 2021, may we all grow in our capacity to draw others to Christ and our parish and school by our commi ed and inten onal discipleship! News and Notes: Marking the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being declared Patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis proclaimed a yearlong celebra on dedicated to the foster father of Jesus. There is much we can learn from this quiet gure of the Holy Family. As St. Peter Julian Eymard wrote, “St. Joseph worshiped Jesus as no saint before had done. From his deep, calm soul he poured out a very ocean of love - tenderest love, humblest love… No angel might love Jesus as Joseph loved Him, as Joseph was bound to love Him. Aside from the Blessed Virgin, Saint Joseph was the rst and most perfect adorer of Our Lord." Many thanks to all who contributed in any way to our celebra on of Christmas and blessings for good health, much happiness and growth in holiness to all of you in 2021!
If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.

Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord, and we hear the familiar story of the arrival of the Three Kings (also referred to as Magi) with their gi s of gold, frankincense, and
myrrh. Through our modern perspec ve, none of these seem like par cularly prac cal gi s to present to a baby, but did you know that they all allude to Jesus’ life and his future ministry?
These valuable items were standard gi s to honor a king in the ancient world: gold as a precious metal, frankincense as perfume or incense, and myrrh as anoin ng oil. In addi on to the honor and status implied by the value of the gi s of the Magi, scholars think that these three were chosen for their special spiritual symbolism about Jesus himself—gold represen ng his kingship, frankincense a symbol of his priestly role, and myrrh a pre guring of his death.
Some believe that the tradi on of giving gi s at Christmas me is rooted in the presenta on of gi s by the Magi to the infant Jesus. But perhaps too much is made of the gi s brought by the Magi, because Christmas is not about the gi s we bring; it is about the gi God gives. God’s gi is his son, Jesus Christ. His gi is the hope of the world. His gi is grace and forgiveness. His gi is everlas ng life.
So whether you received clothes, toys, or (probably not!) frankincense under the tree this year, remember that the real gi of Christmas is Jesus.

Epiphany Blessing for Your Home Gather your family to ask God’s blessing on your home, those who live in it, and those who visit. It is an invita on for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversa ons, our work and play, our joys and sorrows.
Use chalk to write above the home’s entrance, 20 + C + M + B + 21. The le ers C, M, B have two meanings. They are the ini als of the tradi onal names of the three magi: Caspar,
Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the La n words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross and 2021 is the new year.
Epiphany House Blessing
God of Light, bless our home. Make it a haven of rest for all in need of your warmth and care. And when
we go out of this place, may we never lose sight of Christ’s light. May all who enter through the year,
find love and light; for Christ has come to dwell in this home and in these hearts. Amen.
