Shout outseattLe unIVersItY and photo Center nw:a LastIng partnershIp
as we enter our fifteenth year of our collaboration with seattle university, we want
to reflect on the evolution of this rich partnership. in 1999 the Photo Center offered
its first class for credit to an su student. Claire garoutte became the head of the su
program and the visionary behind the bFa in Photography. the concept behind the
program was “to offer both an extensive liberal arts education and academy-level
training in photography.” this unique undergraduate program allows students to enroll
in over 100 courses annually at the Photo Center, learn from an extended community of
professional artists, and experience photographic education in a very unique way.
seattle university students also contribute to our community over the course of their
study at the Photo Center by assisting with classes, volunteering, and infusing our
classes with creativity and new perspectives. the Photo Center is proud to serve a di-
verse student audience including active photographers, professionals in various fields,
and emerging artists of all ages who are completing a course of study. it has been
inspirational to watch four graduating classes of bFa candidates launch their profes-
sional photographic careers after becoming a part of the Photo Center family.

VoICes From our CommunItY
Engagethe power oF photographY
the Photo Center takes great pride in presenting exhibitions
and is aware of the powerful impact images can make on
our community. we are committed to bringing exceptional
works to the Pacific northwest and engaging our visitors
in understanding new cultures, asking tough questions,
and shedding light on social issues through photography.
our fall exhibition is no exception; social order: women
Photographers from iran, india and afghanistan features
five contemporary women artists whose work explores
the role of women in the context of cultural constructs,
religion, censorship, and the media. each of these artists
has left an important mark on the world of contemporary
photography through their courageous and relevant work.
From Priya Kambli's visual explorations of the transience
and split cultural identity caused by the act of migration,
to annu Palakunnathu Matthew’s play on her individual
“otherness,” this exhibition draws powerful parallels and
invites us all to reconsider our personal roles as advocates
of tolerance and diversity in our cities.
