Triple certainty:The additional arc sensor.

Why install a third arc sensor, if there are already two sensors permanently monitoring the formation of arcs with their photocells, which switch off the WTG in case of an incident? Experience shows that arcs can also occur in the control cabinet of the circuit breaker and can, in some cases, lead to fatal fi res.

The cause: Although arcs can be quickly extinguished by the medium-voltage switchgear in the tower base, this is triggered by the overcurrent release. As the release is delayed, this could lead to considerable damage.

The solution is a third arc sensor, which is installed near the circuit breaker in the control cabinet and which disconnects the turbine from the grid within milliseconds in case of arcing.

Sometimes it is worth to go the extra mile.

“Vestas“ is a registered trademark of Vestas Wind Systems A/S, DK.

Advantages and features of the additional arc sensor:

• Permanent monitoring of copper rail main distribution

• Safe switching off of SF6 medium-voltage switchgear

in milliseconds

• Prevention of serious fi res and total loss

• For Vestas® V80 VCS®, V90 2.0 MW and V66 turbines

100% cooling with 20% air: The air-conditioning package.

As for the voltage, it is always alive in the transformer cabinet. And this is not only due to the up to 33,000 Volts, applied in the rear section of the nacelle. The high voltage also bears a considerable risk with regards to causing a fi re. Reason enough for us to inspect the transformer cabinet twice as often as recommended by the manufacturer, i.e. twice a year.

This reduces the risk of fi re in transformer cabinets considerably. Inthis way, minor defects that could have serious consequences, are detected early and are remedied in time. And with some sound investment, the service life of the transformer can even be actively increased, e.g. by adding an effi cient air-conditioning package, a safe transformer bracket or an additional arc sensor.

Highest quality for high voltage. A fl ow of air cannot simply be stopped. And just as well, as

it is vital for cooling down the transformer. An uncontrolled air fl ow into the nacelle however, can also presents some issues. As in the past 100% of the air entered the transformer cabinet, this caused considerable soiling, for instance, by salt deposits. As a result, considerable investments were required, as in the worst case, transformers had to be replaced every 2 years.

The solution is a completely new ventilation concept. Using a special diverting system and an individually controlled fan only about 20% of the air are conducted into the transformer cabinet. This is fully suffi cient for cooling the transformer and nearly pre-vents all unwanted salt deposits.

Advantages and features of the air-conditioning package:

• Special diverting system guarantees 100% cooling using 20% of the air

• Prevents soiling, e.g. salt deposits

• Ideal for WTGs at extreme locations, e.g. in coastal areas

• Increased service life of transformer

• For transformers of Vestas® V80 VCS®,

V90 2.0 MW and V66 turbines

Keeping our promises: The reinforced transformer bracket.

With a weight of 5 tons, one hardly expects a transformer to be very mobile. Because of its position at the rear of the nacelle, the transformer is actually exposed to considerable vibrations, which the transformer bracket is not always able to withstand. If the transformer bracket should break, the transformer can tilt or hang on one side.

The stability of the transformer bracket can be increased by a design upgrade developed by us using, aside from general reinforcements, also the otherwise unused carrying capacity of the crane runway. For this purpose, the bracket is tensioned crosswise to the crane runway using steel rods. This arrangement prevents vibrations and the five tons of weight of the transformer are therefore no longer of any consequence.

Advantages and features of the reinforced

transformer bracket:

• Increased load-bearing capacity

• Preventing a total loss of the transformer

• Permanent stabilization of transformer bracket

against vibrations

• Optimum use of carrying capacity and stability

of the crane runway
