Sometimes the small seemingly inconsequencial things produce a big eff ect in the maintenance of WTGs. In this case, the small things are expensive. In the 2 MW Vestas® V80 and V90 WTGs, the bracket used for the carbon brushes on the generator can cause problems when changing the sliding contacts.

During dismantling of the brushes, parts of the housing can fall into the slip-ring box. Because of the compact area, removal takes time and is expensive. Existing brackets also reduce the service life of the carbon brushes and produce uneven wear. Enough reasons for our engineers to develop an upgrade, off ering an effi cient solution.

A key aspect of our new bracket is its compact size. It is designed in such a way that the housing components do not have to be fully removed from the unit during assembly. Service engineers can therefore rely on a reliable and quick operation despite the restricted space.

In order to reduce the wear of the carbon brushes, we have devel-oped the geometry of the bracket and the confi guration of the sliding contacts in such a way that equalizes the wear on the leading and trailing sides. The benefi t: the service life of the carbon brushes increases by 50 %, and they only have to be replaced every 18 months instead of every year.
