1. Introduction

The Second International Conference on Material Science (ICMS-2017) held at the Department of Physics, Tripura University during 16-18 February, 2017, aimed to promote sharing of new knowledge and exchange of the latest ideas in the field through deliberations in the conference. The Keynote address, Invited lectures and the oral & poster sessions have been designed to represent the length and breadth of the field, with specific emphasis on the multidisciplinary nature of the subject. We express our gratitude to the Speakers for agreeing to come over to Tripura from various parts of the world and India in order to make aware all about the latest developments in the field.

This three days conference covered the emerging areas of Material Science and Physics as well as its interdisciplinary relevance. In this respect, ICMS-2017 conference helped us to exchange our ideas, knowledge, and potentials for the development of the subject and also to perform better research in the national and international levels. Tripura is one of the remote states in North-Eastern region and this type of conference on Material Science

could be an opportunity to create a new door for collaborative research activities in the subject throughout the North-Eastern region as well as also across the country and abroad. 2. About the Organizers

Department of Physics, Tripura University was established in the year 1990. The department runs both

M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. The department has the reputation of producing large number of NET/SLET qualified students several of whom have been awarded with suitable placements in public life. Faculties are trying hard to interact with the rest of the country in the subject by attending national and international meetings, seminars etc. At present departmental faculty members continued project having grant (ongoing) of Rs. 420 lakhs from various central funding agencies viz. DST, ISRO, CSIR, DAE, UGC. The department of Physics has organized several national & international conferences, workshops and refresher courses in recent past.

There are four research groups in the department:

2.1. Thin films & Nanoscience:

Faculty member involved in this group: Prof. D. Bhattacharjee & Dr. S. A. Hussain Research interests of this group are Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films, Self assembled (LbL) films, organo-clay hybrid, FRET, switching devices, optical sensors, biosensors, biomimetic surface, Langmuir films etc. This group has active collaboration with top researchers around the world and published more than 100 high-quality peer review journal articles, book chapters etc. Link for more details about the activity of the group: https://sahussaintu.wordpress.com/

2.2. Atmospheric Science:

Faculty member involved in this group: Prof. B. K. De & Dr. A. Guha Research interest interest of this group is Lightning and its effects on terrestrial environment, its relation with long term climate change Coupling mechanism between upper atmosphere (magnetosphere and ionosphere) and troposphere and its relation with space environment Atmospheric aerosol radiative forcing on synoptic scale Precursory signature of earthquakes through electromagnetic channel.

2.3. Theoretical Physics:

Faculty member involved in this group: Dr. S. Chattopadhyaya Research interest interest of this group is Theoretical atomic & molecular spectroscopy, Theoretical condensed matter physics, Theoretical material science

2.4. Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology:

Faculty member involved in this group:Dr. R. Das Research interest of this group is Synthesis and characterization of metal, semiconductor and Magnetic nanoparticles for the study of their different properties with proper applications.
