As a Rebbe I find that there is a very strong factor other than knowledge and intelligence that plays a very important role in a Talmid’s performance in the classroom, specifically lack of sleep. I can enforce the “heads may not be put down during class” rule, but it does not help the Talmid stay more alert. A sleep-deprived child can not be as successful in the classroom.

The vacation months are enjoyable and the long summer days make it nearly impossible to get children into bed on time. However, it is the ideal time to plan ahead for the upcoming school year. Cooperation between the parent and the Rebbe is essential to help prepare a well-rested child. Parents need to establish a good bedtime routine which needs to get adapted over time as children go through their adolescent years.

Recent research has shown incredible results with regard to the effects of sleep deprivation. In a study done by Dr. Avi Sadeh of Tel Aviv University, some of the participants were asked to go to bed early and others were asked to stay up later than usual. On average, the first group of students went to bed one hour earlier than the second group, yet the difference of only one hour’s sleep caused a huge difference in their learning performance. The slightly tired group performed two years below their grade level. A sleepy sixth grader will perform like a mere fourth grader.

While a person is asleep, the brain does much more than simply “Recharge.” New information shifts to more efficient storage regions of the brain and the memory is synthesized, enhanced and concretized during the night hours.  New inferences and associations are drawn, which can lead to new insight the following

day.

A study presented in this month’s Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine shows that by delaying the start of the school day by even half-hour, the students exhibited an increase in their ability to concentrate and stay involved throughout the school day. The well-rested more efficient learners during their shorter school day were able to complete the same subject material as their sleep-deprived peers completed in their longer school day.

There are a number of factors which inhibit a child from falling asleep.

• Light. The obvious sleep inhibitor- affects the circadian rhythm system which regulates sleep cycles.

• Computer games/videos. While sitting sedentary may appear to calm a child the light from a computer can delay both the necessary drop in core body temperature and melatonin production—and thus delay sleep onset—by up to two hours.

• Temperature. There is a reason we like it cool when we go to sleep. The circadian rhythm system that helps regulate sleep cycles is not only light sensitive, but its temperature sensitive as well. Anything above a standard room air temperature both slows the body’s initiation of sleep and changes sleep patterns.

• Overtired. Higher stress hormones created by the brain can seriously affect the ability to fall asleep.

A good bedtime routine coupled with optimal sleep conditions will help a child “get up on the right side of bed” to start a successful day of learning.

The Bed Problem This was good news indeed that reached the ears of Reb Yossele of Ostila, the son of Reb Mordechai of Neshchiz. He had heard that a celebrated tzaddik was soon to pass through his town and very much wanted to have him as his guest, for this was none other than Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak of Lublin, known as the Chozeh ("the Seer") on account of his unusual powers of perception. Now he knew that when the Chozeh lay down on another's bed he would sometimes cry out: "It's prickly!" He therefore summoned to his home a G-d-fearing carpenter and instructed him to build a bed especially for the rebbe; to make sure that no one else should sleep on it; that he should immerse himself in a mikvah before working on it; and that he should entertain pure thoughts while working.

The carpenter was not at all enthused by this odd proposition, and in fact was somewhat apprehensive. On the other hand he could not quite bring himself to reject an instruction given by the rebbe. In the end he set about the work with a dejected spirit and a feeling of unworthiness, knowing full well who was the holy man who was soon to sleep on this bed. As soon as delivered the finished articles to Reb Yossele, the tzadik stood it in a special room, made it up with bedclothes that were suitable spotless and ironed, brought in a chair, table and lamp, and locked the door. And in order that he should be certain that no one at all would enter the room, he kept the key in his own pocket.

A few days later Reb Yossele was overjoyed, for when he went out to greet his distinguished guest, the Chozeh in fact accepted is offer of hospitality. He

conducted him to his room, showed him the bed which a G-d-fearing carpenter had constructed especially for him, invited him to lie down to rest a little, and left the room in calm satisfaction.

"Help! It's prickly!" - came the cries of alarm from within.

Reb Yossele did not know what to think. Perhaps he should offer the Chozeh his own bed? But then it would not be very pleasant if the same thing happened there too. Besides, if that were the case, how would the tzadik rest after his arduous journey? Finally, however, he decided to ask the rebbe to sleep in his own bed, and the Chozeh agreed.

When he woke up he said: "Excellent! You have restored life to all my limbs!" Reb Yossele was relieved - but he still had a question: "I was a little surprised, sir, that you said that the new bed was prickly, for a G-d-fearing man made it specially for you."

"Have no fear!" the rebbe reassured him. "The bed is kosher in every respect. Only one thing: it exudes a smell of melancholy, because it was built during the Nine Days of Mourning, and the carpenter, being a G-d-fearing man, was lamenting the Destruction of the Beis HaMikdash while he was working on it."
