A day in the life of Mr. Fitzgerald and his student.

Mr. Fitzgerald teaches grade 10 social studies at a large high school. Midterms are approaching, and Mr. Fitzgerald is concerned about his student performance. He recently noticed lower class participation, and a bump in late assignment submissions. He decides to give a formative assessment to identify where his students are struggling most in preparation for their midterm.

He goes into his course, quickly creates a multiple choice quiz, and assigns it to his students.

Sarah Lynn (a student in one of Mr. Fitzgerald’s classes) receives a notification that a new practice quiz is available.

She has been struggling in some of the recent material and is very worried about the midterm. She decides to take the quiz on her tablet to help her identify where her biggest weaknesses are, so she can better prepare for the upcoming exam.

During his prep at the end of the week, Mr. Fitzgerald sets up an Intelligent Agent to connect with the students who did not do well on the assessment. During a practice run of the Intelligent Agent, he sees that most students did not do well.

He then decides the best way to help his student’s success on their exam is to provide a differentiated approach to this week’s lessons.

Mr. Fitzgerald includes a link to a virtual classroom discussion and sets the reply-to address to his email so they may also reach out to him directly. In his automated message that goes out via intelligent agent he explains the discussion has been set up for 90 minutes the following afternoon for extra support outside of class time in preparation for the exam.

Sarah Lynn received the email and is happy to hear about the virtual discussion. She adds the session to her calendar and begins to prepare questions for the discussion.

During the session Mr. Fitzgerald starts a poll hoping to pinpoint the main source of confusion. His suspicions were confirmed and he shares a special study sheet file in the session on that topic so his students can keep it as a reference.

Sarah then sends a note to her teacher thanking him for creating this discussion. She explains she was shy to ask for help on where she was struggling before and is feeling much more confidant.

1 week before the exam Mr. Fitzgerald sends out a second formative assessment. He is so pleased with his students for their hard work he decided to offer an alternative summative assessment to the traditional exam. Mr. Fitzgerald remembers his district purchased the premium version of video assignments, so he decided to offer students the choice of completing a video case response assignment or writing a midterm.

Sarah is thrilled, and begins planning for her video case response right away.
