Our Bournemouth venue, Pavilion Dance, is five years old this autumn (see page 28) and we are delighted to continue to present more professional dance performances in one venue than just about anywhere in England, outside London.

This season’s programme celebrates internationalism and cultural diversity, with work from or inspired by Scandinavia, India, Wales, Belgium, New Zealand, France, Bangladesh and Equatorial Guinea.

Illustrating the broad range of forms and styles that contemporary choreographers use, our season includes everything from Breaking to Bharatanatyam and beyond. We believe everybody will find something to connect with at Pavilion Dance South West this autumn.

We are particularly excited to welcome back Scottish Dance Theatre on 1st October (page 8) and to present two performances of Tavaziva’s Africarmen on 26th and 27th November (page 16), both internationally acclaimed companies.

It is also very rewarding to present companies whose work we have supported in development, such as Seeta Patel (page 9), Joli Vyann (page 15) and Second Hand Dance (page 22).

As ever, we work with partners to make new things possible and this autumn we are delighted to be presenting “Dance Along the South Coast” with the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, The Point in Eastleigh and Lighthouse Poole (pages 5 and 36).

We are also co-presenting the National Dance Company Wales with Lighthouse Poole on 6th October (page 18). As the core creative partner of Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival and as the festival box office, we have added all our own events between 9th and 18th October to the festival calendar. Look out for the festival logo throughout the brochure.

#DanceAlongSouthCoast

As a dance development organisation we are delighted to have brought together four venues of different scales in partnership to enable you to see more high-quality professional dance this autumn and to celebrate the range of fantastic dance that is within your reach in our area.

We invite you to see one of our dance shows at a venue of your choice and offer you a half price ticket to see another show at any of the other three venues.

By offering this opportunity regularly we want to encourage you to explore dance in different styles, spaces and scales.

Look out for the “Dance Along the South Coast” logo throughout the brochure and find out more about how to book on page 36.

We look forward to dancing along the south coast with you this autumn.

DANCE CAN CHANGE LIVESDance is an art form as well as healthy exercise. It can enrich communities, improve public health and increase social skills and life satisfaction.

WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPENOur work here at Pavilion Dance South West is all about connecting as many people as possible with dance, by running more than 40 classes and workshops for all ages and abilities and by making the cultural landscape in the South West more exciting and diverse for you, our audiences.

FOCUS: DANCE FOR PARKINSON’S

One of our priorities is dance and health. We believe that dance can have a positive effect on everybody, but a particular focus is the unique contribution dance can make to the health and wellbeing of people over 65. We run regular classes for older people as well as for those with Parkinson’s, a condition that affects approximately one in every 500 people in the UK. Some common symptoms include difficulties with balance, co-ordination, posture and walking. Our Parkinson’s Dance class addresses these symptoms in a fun, stimulating and motivating environment.

We are pleased to announce that this autumn we will again be fundraising for our Parkinson’s Dance class with “Business come Dancing”. Last year the event was supported by some fantastic local businesses and we hope to see even more amazing performances this December. This year we will be working with Lewis Manning Hospice to support their great work. If you would like to know more about the event and how to support our work, please contact Joanne Howard on [email protected].

Dance can change lives. You can help secure its future.

YOU CAN HELP SECURE THE FUTUREWe receive investment from Arts Council England and Bournemouth Borough Council to run our core activities, and we earn some income through hires and ticket sales. However, as a not-for-profit charity we subsidise every ticket and re-invest all income to fund new projects and support the development of choreographers and new dance performance. It is likely that public funding for the arts will decrease even more than it already has, so we need to secure a future for our work. You can help secure this future.

These classes are a lifeline in every way, simply because they turn everything negative into positive… Parkinson’s Dance participant

SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE PRESENTS

WINTER,AGAIN & DREAMERS DANCE DOUBLE BILL BY JO STRØMGREN AND ANTON LACHKY

RECOMMENDED FOR AGES 12+

Lachky’s choreography is like a pencil flying across the page, producing quick-witted movements that captivate... The Scotsman

The Herald

The Scotsman

Scottish Dance Theatre presents two contrasting and bold works by internationally acclaimed choreographers Jo Strømgren and Anton Lachky.

Norwegian Jo Strømgren tells the story of a community struggling to hide their dark misdemeanours under winter’s snowy blanket. Punctuated with the devastatingly fragile songs of Schubert’s Eine Winterreise, Scottish Dance Theatre take you on a journey through the cycle of the coldest, darkest season.

Dreamers are people who dare to dream while not being asleep. Anton Lachky takes pleasure in making sense from nonsense and exploring links between reality and surrealism. His work highlights the beauty and power of the moving body and intertwines it with his quirky and humorous style.

SOMETHING THEN, SOMETHING NOW

BY SEETA PATEL

Something Then, Something Now tells the story of a mortal contemplating the physical and spiritual union with a god. It reflects our own attempts to emotionally connect with

others, and the spiritual union to which it ultimately relates.

Born and raised in the UK, Seeta Patel has been championing the Indian classical dance

style of Bharatanatyam for many years. She has presented work at Southbank Centre and Sadler’s Wells and was one of the mentors for

the BBC’s Young Dancer 2015 finals.

Our venue, Pavilion Dance, is five years old this September. Since its opening in 2010,

we have delivered more than 8000 dance classes, showed nearly 500 live

performances, and supported more than 60 artists and companies to create work in our studios. And that’s only part of what we do!

We think this is a reason to celebrate with you by opening our doors on Saturday 5 September

for a range of free taster classes, workshops and visual art!

We also think it is the perfect time to launch our autumn season, so do come along and hear from our Artistic Director what exciting

live dance performances, films and events we have in store for you this autumn.

Our birthday present to you!A half-price ticket to any of our live dance performances

in the autumn if booked together with a class between 7 and 19 September.

CAREERS FAIR

FOR AGES 16+ (ID REQUIRED)

SILENT DISCOBY SILENTARENA

TUE SEP 229.30am – 2pm

FREE

Considering a creative career in dance? Why not come along to our

Creative Careers Fair?

We’ve gathered together a host of leading experts from a variety of

universities, vocational institutions and professional organisations.

Listen to talks, take part in workshops, and ask questions about

what it’s really like to work in these fields. Students, teachers and

parents all welcome to attend.

Experience the decidedly weird sensation of being with a whole host of people dancing wildly, apparently to nothing at all – unless, that is, you’re wearing headphones, in which case there are two DJs to choose from and a host of big tunes.

Please note that this is an outdoor event.

TAKE PART

This year’s event for older dancers will be led by Betsy Field, a member of Sadler’s Wells’ “Company of Elders”, and Rosalind Conlon, dance artist and producer. In the morning you will enjoy a class warm up, followed by lunch, and an afternoon workshop with Betsy and Ros. It will be an enjoyable day of dance in a friendly atmosphere. Explore your own movement style and creativity with other older dancers from the area.

How can we offer children and young people in the

SW the best possible dance experiences?

The Coinvestment Day brings case studies, keynote speakers, dancers and teachers together

in one room, sharing ideas, identifying needs and finding

ways to overcome challenges.

This is a free event, but capacity is limited, so please

secure your space by emailing [email protected].
