Acting

Mountview’s third year actors present a series of plays looking at "this sceptred isle". St James’s Church Paddington provides a magisterial backdrop for Richard II, Shakespeare’s exploration of Britain and kingship which opens the season. A very different nation at war is seen in Imogen Stubbs' We Happy Few in which a group of touring actresses keep a stiff upper lip amidst the chaos of World War II, whilst Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth looks at how far the pastoral idyll of England has fallen. We Happy Few and Jerusalem are presented in rep at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith and the Karamel Club in Wood Green.

Musical Theatre

Money is at the root of the season’s musicals. The Producers is a big, brash, Broadway take on how to make a fortune whilst Half A Sixpence is a warm-hearted British classic. Presented at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre both shows are double cast and showcase our full company of third year musical theatre students.

RICHARD II

A monarchy in crisis. The Hundred Years War is bankrupting Britain and Richard II is accused of unjustly seizing and squandering his nobles’ wealth. Disinherited and discontent, Henry Bolingbroke returns from exile and proclaims himself king, imprisoning Richard and unleashing a series of events that lead to Richard’s death and his own coronation as Henry IV.

jerusalem

Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron is cock of the walk. Drug dealer, rabble-rouser, errant father and scourge of local authorities he is king of the castle in his own corner of England’s green and pleasant land. Jerusalem is a provocative, barnstorming play that looks at how far we’ve fallen from John of Gaunt’s vision of “England’s royal throne of kings”.

THE PRODUCERS

How do you make a fortune in the theatre? Create a sure-fire flop and flee to Rio with the investment money. Hyperactive impresario Max Bialystock, hypersensitive accountant Leo Bloom, Swedish sex-bomb secretary Ulla Swanson, tap-dancing little old ladies and high-kicking Nazi stormtroopers create the greatest show ever written about the worst show ever conceived.

WE HAPPY FEW

Based on a true story, We Happy Few sees a troupe of female actors, the Artemis Players, tour the United Kingdom “from Weston-Super-Mare to Balleymalloy”. With four shows a day and a repertoire of 35 plays they keep home spirits up, but not without personal cost. Actress and writer Imogen Stubbs has reworked her 2004 play especially for a cast of Mountview’s final year actors.

HALF A SIXPENCE CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Childhood sweethearts Kipps and Ann grow apart when Kipps inherits a fortune and develops a taste for the finer things. But he soon realises high society (including new-found fiancée Helen Walsingham and her domineering matriarch) are not for him and he yearns for his old life back. He wins Ann’s heart but loses his fortune, proving that money can’t buy you happiness.

An amateur production by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd

The year ends with our annual Christmas celebration at St James’s Paddington. The concert of festive readings and songs – some familiar, some unexpected – is the only opportunity to see all Mountview’s students perform together.

This year is special as for the first time undergraduate and postgraduate acting and musical theatre students are joined by their colleagues from our newest course: BA (Hons) in Performance – Actor Musician.
