1. On entering Bell Gate head straight across and follow the path towards Pebble Alcove where you can sit and enjoy the view of the lake through the trees. The alcove is decorated with pebbles in the form of Lord Cobham’s coat of arms and his motto ‘Templa Quam Dilecta’ translated to ‘How beautiful are thy temples’. 2. Follow the path round to the Temple of Friendship which provides another opportunity to take a seat and admire the view. Here you can see out to the Palladian Bridge and up to the Gothic Temple. Look out for the red oak trees in Hawkwell Mead with their spectacular autumn colours. 3. Head over the Palladian Bridge, one of only three in the country – and Stowe’s is the only one with no steps as tourists of the past would have travelled over the bridge in their horse drawn carriages. 4. Continue left along the lakeside path and over the Wooden Bridge. Pause for a moment along the path between the Wooden Bridge and the Cascade to take in the view up towards the magnificent Stowe House – this view would once have been a formal garden of geometric shaped flower beds. Turn around to enjoy the vista across the Octagon Lake, through the Lake Pavilions and on to the Corinthian Arch in the distance. 5. As you turn the corner around the Octagon Lake you can find a big bench tucked away to pause and catch a glimpse across the lake to Lord Chatham’s Urn and the wonderful autumn reflections. 6. Continue round to the left before taking the path on the right, taking you alongside the Eleven Acre Lake. Along this path you should see some great reflections, both the Hermitage and the Temple of Venus have a perfect reflection on the lake when viewed from this side. Also look out for the Tulip Tree whose distinctive leaves turn butter-yellow in autumn. 7. Follow the lakeside path around and up to the Temple of Venus. Looking across the lake, enjoy views of the Rotunda and across Home Park. Home Park is one of the newly opened parts of the garden. Over the next few years you will see improved views across this area from the Rotunda to the Temple of Venus, we will also be working to create a wildflower rich hay meadow. 8. On leaving the Temple of Venus pause to admire the Spindle tree whose leaves turn scarlet red in the autumn and the vivid pink and orange seed pods that really stand out. Then follow the path straight across towards the Hermitage 9. From the Hermitage you can enjoy views across to the Cascade. Look out for more Spindle trees nearby. 10. At the end of the path turn right and head back up the path towards the Lake Pavilions. When you get to the main path junction stop for a moment and turn around to enjoy the beautifully framed view towards the statue of Queen Caroline. Make sure you also take in the avenue of London Planes down Pe’s Terrace before heading back to Bell Gate to end the walk. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
