What’s Been Happening at Camco by Chris Goold - Director
Welcome again to another edition of the Camco Newsletter,
Autumn 2019. As summer quickly becomes a distant memory the
end of financial year is rapidly approaching. A traditionally hectic
time of year for the construction industry, 2019 is proving to be no
different. The end of financial year also signals the halfway mark
of the year (unbelievably!) and is a great opportunity to stop,
catch your breath and reflect of the year so far.
At Camco, this year has seen the completion of several long
running projects – we have cleared the congestion on West
Thebarton Road/Phillips Street and Brandis Road has just had the
last of the deeplift asphalt laid. Several projects are also
continuing into winter – Waterfall Gully, where helicopters have
been sighted delivering concrete and Apex Park/Lockleys Riding
Club come to mind. We are also managing several land division
sites, both brown fields and green fields, which should see the new
financial year start off on a solid footing.
So, happy reading and happy
new-financial year!

News from Inside the Camco Office With Autumn on its last legs you can say its been a crazy season of

out the warm jackets and scarves sooner rather than later.
Since summer we have had a few changes in the office. We would
like to welcome Teearna Dios-Brun to the team, she is our new

celebrating his 10 years at Camco. We are truly grateful to those who have chosen to stay with Camco for
such long periods of time and we are always excited to celebrate these milestones with each and every one
of them. As the year goes on, we also have to say goodbye to a dear friend. After 9 years with Camco,
Chris Henshall will be leaving us to enjoy his well deserved retirement. Chris will be greatly missed and we
wish him all the best on this new journey in his life.
On a happy note, we want to congratulate Ashlee Trimmer on her recent engagement to her partner Dillon.
They will be tying the knot next June and we wish them all best in this new chapter in their lives.

Camco Management System (CMS)
Update by Marco Puz Following on from the information in the previous newsletter, the response
from site personnel to the series of toolbox meetings conducted in the last few
months has been extremely positive. The number of “close calls” reported
(often referred to as “near misses”) has significantly increased. The statistics
to the left shows the percentage of incidents reported by type for the 2019
year to date.
While the most significant incident type by far is property damage, reporting
of close calls has more than doubled from last year. This is important because
it’s the close calls that provide insight into incidents that can result in more
serious outcomes, which in turn allows everyone the opportunity to identify the
risks and minimise the probability of such an incident occurring. The focus on
reporting close calls will continue throughout the rest of the year.
It’s also important to note that Camco has not experienced any
environmental incidents year to date. In fact, there have not been any
environmental incidents for well over 3 years, one minor incident 3 years ago
involving sand flowing into a creek during heavy rains, and no significant
environmental incidents since Camco commenced operations in 2001.

Traineeships
Camco has recently employed a new site crew member through the
“Training & Employment Initiatives (Works Program)”. The person will
remain with Camco for the duration of the contract and if
available, may secure a longer-term position with Camco as have
4 other people from similar initiatives in the past.
We are proud to support local jobseekers in
this way and will continue to work with clients
on similar initiatives to provide training,

West Thebarton Road and Phillips Street - Road Upgrade and Streetscape
City of West Torrens
Project Manager: Chris Goold
Site Manager: Dan Schultz / Matthew Tomney
Completed: March 2019
Construction Period: 47 Weeks
Project Value: $5,700,000
Project Scope:
With such large works having to be undertaken, this
project was broken down into two stages. The first
stage took place on West Thebarton Road, Thebarton with the upgrade of the
road and associated streetscape works. Stage 2 was on Phillips Street taking the upgrade from South Road
to Port Road.
The project scope included detailed service investigation and survey, environmental soil classification,
installation of 1500m of directional drilled common service trench, kerb removal and replacement,
adjustment of existing service pits, footpath reconstruction with new block paving, exposed aggregate
concrete driveways, stormwater works (including construction of approximately 500m of stormwater
drainage works, up to 4.5m deep), deep lift pavement reconstruction, block paved side street intersections,
irrigation and electrical design and installation, soft landscape works and ancillary landscape structures.
Problem Solving:
Service locating and potholing prior to
construction of new stormwater allowed us to
redesign the stormwater to optimise trench
excavation and identify service clashes not
picked up in original design. This significantly
reduced construction cost, unexpected
delays due to service clashes and time to
install.
Work Health & Safety:
Two-way and pedestrian traffic was
successfully managed with site personnel and
traffic controllers while works onsite were
being undertaken.
Camco Autumn Newsletter | May 2019
Crossing the Finish Line! Its is always a great feeling when you can finish off a project, and
particularly one that you have been working on for a while. This
project at West Thebarton was a fantastic opportunity for Camco
to show its ability to manage and construct a major arterial road
and streetscape upgrade.
We are immensely happy with the outcome and the many months
of hard work really paid off.
