This is a really exciting time for the studio and particularly for Linda and Franklin who have put mind, body and soul into the business. It started off from humble beginnings bringing expertise from both Linda and Franklin’s exercise backgrounds. Slowly they brought on more staff and have made it the success it now is. When I call it a business, it is that in name only; Bodymind has become a family, bringing together people from across the Wairarapa to be part of a group that values each other and doing good things for our bodies. You can read more about the history of Bodymind and about Linda and Franklin’s journeys in getting where they are today on page 2. As the year progresses, the leaves are turning and winter seems to be on its way. I just love autumn though, with the beautiful colours around and the fresh mornings that make you appreciate the warm afternoons all the more. I’m planting my winter garden and harvesting all the self-sown pumpkins that appeared to summer in my flower garden. There will be soup a-plenty this winter. Check out my favourite pumpkin soup recipe below along with my new favourite coconut scones. We are excited about our birthday celebration coming up in June - don’t miss this one! Last years fancy dress costumes were just fabulous. Given we are celebrating 10 years, I think this one will be even bigger and more exuberant! Linda and Franklin lead the powerhouse team behind Bodymind Pilates and this year celebrate 10 years in their professional partnership. Both have an extensive history in the exercise and wellbeing arena and share their stories with us!

Linda’s Story

Linda has been actively serving the health and fitness needs of Wairarapa for almost 30 years. Linda currently works with Regional Public Health and is a Co-Director of Bodymind (NZ) Ltd. Linda first became involved with the fitness industry in 1981 when teaching at Temuka Primary School holding Jazzercise and Jazzergetic classes for parents and teachers. A couple of years later, she moved to Pongaroa to teach there, and within weeks had established ‘Pongaroa Aerobics’. In 1985 Linda left teaching and started her new role with the YMCA Masterton as Director of Health and Fitness, introducing the Aerobics programme and training new instructors. Linda left the YMCA in 1989 to embark in her own business with a partner, opening a successful Aerobics gym, Body Rock. By 1991 it had grown to include a weight training gym and also a circuit training studio, and continued to service the Wairarapa fitness community for a further 10 years. During that time Linda continued to run successful instructor training programmes. With her passion for exercise classes and her background in teaching, Linda’s ability in training instructors to teach at a high level can proudly boast that we have some of the best group fitness instructors in New Zealand teaching throughout the Wairarapa.

In 2003 Linda began training in Auckland, under the London School of Pilates, and proceeded to run a small timetable of classes from the Masterton Community Centre on Dixon Street. Bodymind Pilates was conceived… Franklins Story Franklin became involved in the fitness industry in 1997, being employed at Body Rock Gym as an aerobic instructor and gym trainer. In 2001 Franklin joined with Jenkins Gym which was opening in Masterton and trained as a Les Mills Instructor and Personal Trainer. He left in 2003 to work at SFRITO in Wellington, the New Zealand Fitness Industry training Organisation, developing fitness qualifications and unit standards registered with NZQA. In his role at SFRITO, Franklin also worked within Gyms and Fitness Centres across the country developing their business plans and operational procedures. As a registered fitness assessor, Franklin also worked alongside Linda Spence, who was contracted by SFRITO as an independent trainer.

In 2005 Franklin and Linda partnered to form the Bodymind (NZ) Ltd company and set up the Bodymind Pilates brand. The Bodymind Pilates studio was opened on Upper Plain Road. A few years later in 2007 Franklin left SFRITO and joined Linda at Bodymind.

The 50s Forward Club put Soul into Bodymind A Report from Alison Clark – 50s Forward Club Social Co-ordinator

50s forward is going really well and expanding! There are quite a few different new people that are coming to classes regularly. We like to encourage people to come to our monthly lunch, last Friday of every month, 12pm, Solway Park Café. We’ve always said that bodymind should have soul at the end of it, because we become good friends and we’ve all got bodies that are maturing and need looking after. That’s why we go to 50s forward: for body maintenance and friendship. Many thanks to the different instructors who work with us. Alison
