Presidents Report After the trauma and upheaval of the bushfires it has been good to get back to normality. I do hope that everyone survived relatively unscathed. I was contacted by Network to say they had had enquiries from other U3As asking how they could assist us and other groups in East Gippsland. My response was come and stay and spend your money. Following the fires the Committee has made a donation of $500 to the Lakes Entrance CFA towards the purchase of their new fire truck and equipment. Enrolment Day went very smoothly. Some members have queried why they were asked to complete a new Membership form. As with so many other organisations, Lakes Entrance U3A has adopted a number of Policies and by signing the new form we all agreed to abide by the Code of Conduct and other Policies (all available to view on our website). Membership Welcome to all our new members, and it's great to see so many of you returning for another fun year with U3A, we have 164 registered to date. I hope everyone is enjoying their classes, there is much enthusiasm about! Please wear your badges as we have new members joining all through the year and a name tag helps introduce us to each other. Also the badges are to show you are a current member of Lakes U3A.

Joy Wilmshurst,

What’s New

Fire Investigation This class will be an overview of the fire investigation process. We will look at the fire investigation and how fire investigators go about their work. Fire investigation is the practical application of how fires start, why they start but more importantly, where do they start. As a fire origin and cause investigator (not the other way round) if you cannot find WHERE it started, you cannot state HOW it started. The first session will be on basic home fire safety. What you should have and do in your home to prevent or (worst case scenario) deal with a small fire.

Trevor Pillinger 0417 323 667

Criminology What a great group of participants we have for our very first Criminology class. I am a little overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and the thirst for knowledge demonstrated so far. I would expect that Criminology 1 will be offered again later in the year for those who missed out this time. Over the first 5 weeks we have covered a detailed introduction to the study of crime, criminal behavior and the criminal justice system and discussed the history of crime and punishment. The last three weeks have featured the three dominant theories which influence the current criminal justice processes. The remaining sessions will have a close look at female crime, crime and the media and victimology. Due to the popularity of the subject matter, I have been asked to offer a second term of Criminology but it will be only for those who have undertaken Criminology 1. We will look closely at law enforcement and correctional system, and the influence of Criminology on Crime Prevention techniques. We will also be undertaking some Case Studies where participants can do some research and our classes can be a little more interactive.

News from the Groups Film Group One of the high lights for first term was watching “Ride like a girl”

Craft Group 2020 has started off well with most members returning. It was good to get back and catch up with everyone. We welcome new member Rhonda and hope you enjoy your time with us. Our group is a great one to come along and do your own craft and have a chat and a cuppa as well. We meet at 10.15am on. Tuesday morning at the Lodge and would love to have new people join us. Best wishes to all for Easter and we look forward to a great second term

Margo Short - Facilitator Canasta Canasta is off to a good start with eighteen enthusiastic players so if we all turn up to play we fill the back room. Our learners have caught on quickly and are enjoying the game, looks like a good year ahead.

Ukulele Group We have certainly had a great start to the year. Thank you once again to Maggie Sukera for leading the group in my absence. We now have 30 players, including five new members who are very experienced musicians. Our group now boasts different types of ukuleles – soprano, tenor, baritone and an electric bass – which add variety to our sound. Aren’t we lucky to have such talent in our midst! Already this year we have performed for the Lioness’ Conference and there are some more bookings on the horizon. Now, with 65 songs in our repertoire, we can cater for a variety of audiences. Thank you to all the players who turn up for these public performances. It’s great publicity for U3A. Once again we will be volunteering at Toorloo Arm School to teach ukulele to the Grade 5/6 children. We trialled this program in Term 4 in 2019 and it was very successful. This year the program will start in Term 2. Next term I will start a beginners uke group. I have quite a few people interested already, but will need to cap the group at 10. The classes start on Tuesday April 14th in Room 2 at the Masonic Lodge at 3:30pm. If you have already contacted me about this group, I will look forward to seeing you with your ukulele. Sue Wilson Scrabble Nine enthusiastic ‘Scrabblers’ meet at the Bowling Club on Tuesdays at 10 o’clock where we have a coffee and a toastie, while challenging our word skills with one or two games of Scrabble and Upwords. The games are enjoyable and sociable as well as being good for our brains! A new edition of the Scrabble Dictionary has been purchased and we are all delighted with some inclusions (even though we are essentially ‘purists of the English language...). Can you guess which words have been included? Emoji? Facepalm? Bitcoin? Ok? Do you know their meanings? We are still looking for new members. Why not drop in and have a game with us one day? You’ll love it!

Band report The band has continued to grow with a second sax joining the group. This now makes the band a seven piece plus a singer. We are still looking for a rhythm/ lead guitar as well as anyone who plays a brass or woodwind instrument. Want to play jazz, swing and rock - then this is the group to join. You don’t need to be good but willing to try and improve. We plan to do several performances for the nursing home during the winter months. This will give the group a focus and purpose, as there is no purpose for a band that does not perform. Several of the members have expressed an interest in song writing and arranging. If anyone else would be interested in learning how to arrange music you would be most welcome. Max Newbold Singing We are very happy to welcome Terry, Suz and Jill into our singing group. This term we introduced new songs including one we sing in parts. It’s been nice to hear another male voice in our singing group but we would still like more. Men or women, the more the merrier, come along and join us having fun singing just for pleasure of it. Have a song in your heart.

Andrea

Playalong Our new year started with the addition of new members coming along with drums and percussion, a bass ukulele and a metal guitar. Wow what a selection we now have making it a varied and enjoyable night. We play a mixture of traditional, folk and modern music...well modern for me! Once again I encourage anyone who has played an instrument to dust it off and join us or at least come along and see the type of music we play and then decide.

Carol McDonald

Free Dance This is a great class to get the body moving. As the title says it is dancing freely to the music without the need for partners. I supply the music but you can also bring along your favorites. It’s great exercise and you feel quite refreshed by the end ….and as the saying goes “dance like no-ones watching” .

Andrea Garden Group We are now in our 8th year at the Baptist church. We have had a mixed summer crop of vegies this year. Looking forward to harvesting our sweet potatoes. There’s also a big area out the back where we can grow pumpkins. We will be very busy soon with winter crops, planting broad beans, garlic, carrots and all of the greens including cabbages. A warm welcome to Helen and Lester, we are always glad to see new members The group is grateful to the church for letting us use the land. It works so well.

Cheers Gwenda Bland Photography This year Lyn Miles has agreed to provide the class with her abilities in photography. Together we are pursuing new ideas with the aim of making the class more enjoyable and challenging for all the members. The class is already providing entries for the end of year photo show and calendar. If the first entries are any indication of the quality to come we are in for some difficult choices.

Shabashi Another term already - gosh! We have grown in numbers, which is great. It’s so nice to start the day with a quiet half hour of relaxation and gentle movement. Pop along and give it a go. Andrea Cryptic Crosswords Armed with the rules for charades, gramanas, containers, palindromes and thirteen others, the newcomers have taken to cryptics like OOs to H2O. With a bit of facilitator pushing, our group is pooling wits to fly through three puzzles in a two hour session. Always pleased to welcome new blood so if the mystery of cryptics appeals to you, pay us a visit on Wednesday morning.

Body Balance Term one is already coming to an end. How time flies when you are having fun! The Body Balance class has continued where it left off in 2019. Each week we meet, exercise and relax together. Throughout, the goal is to improve our strength, balance, flexibility and aerobic capacity. This won’t extend your life span but keeping mobile and strong certainly improves our quality of life as we mature in our later years. We have continued with the format of warm-up, stretch, rotations, warm-down and relaxation. But above all, I believe the class has been an opportunity to socialise, have fun and improve emotional and mental wellbeing through enjoying each other’s company and exercising together. We welcomed some new participants to the class who have quickly fitted in to the weekly regime. I hope they continue to enjoy our weekly sessions. As usual, I would like to thank Andrea for her invaluable support in setting up and clearing away our equipment each week. Thankyou to everyone, I look forward three more fruitful terms in 2020.

Pennie Anderson Book Club Our first book for the year was 'The Overstory' by Richard Powers, an American author. We chose to read this book over the Christmas break, and indeed, we actually had 2+ months at our disposal. Despite this we did not all finish the task. The unsettled fire season explains this a bit but the book is big and needs concentration. The general consensus though is that this book deserves to be read and provides fascinating insights into the life of trees as well as some great character development. To many of us it is a wonderful book while there was also criticism of some aspects. Our current read is 'The Drover's Wife' by Leah Purcell who has already written a version as a play. I believe we can expect an easier read this month. We have some new members this year and this will naturally bring new perspectives which can only be a good thing.

History Happy to report the terrible summer fires left our class members unscathed, and we sincerely hope all U3A members suffered only the minor (comparatively) inconvenience of having to either evacuate or risk staying in their homes during that dreadful time. We are having a bit of a hard time with our Yale Free Course Global Problems of Population Growth with Prof Robert Wyman – there are a great many statistical charts during the course and Prof Wyman uses a laser pointer, which doesn’t show up on the video. The charts are well nigh impossible to read too, as the camera doesn’t do close ups. We generally get a few gems tho from each session, for instance, one recent lecture was supposed to be about Modern China but he spent a lot of time on how modern China came about, leading up to the One Child policy. It was quite fascinating to learn why birth control happens in populations – by that I mean for eg why Victorian families were large and in modern times the nuclear family is popular – it is because our cultural norms evolve, and like the evolution of species, if it works to the benefit of the population it continues, if it doesn’t it is discarded or the culture will disappear – and interestingly, most human cultures have disappeared. Draw your own conclusions there!

Marion is going to take us along Esplanade and hopefully point out where old landmarks once stood. We invite all members of U3A to join us on the morning of Monday 20th April to hear Marion talk about the Lakes Entrance she knew in days gone by. Here’s a good example – who knew what was on the site of today’s RSL Club?

Jennie Towan Discussion Group The Discussion Group welcomed six opinionated newcomers this year and they have brought new vigor to our Wednesday afternoon discourse. Fairly civilized conversation ranges from the high level strategic to the modest local concerns, but we are always courteous no matter how extreme or passionate or even outrageous are our views. This gathering is always energetic and we make sure to give each person a chance to raise a subject and have their say in what proves to be a brief two hours. And then we often have to take the unfinished business to the cafe next door. If you are interested, please contact the facilitator by email or phone. Time: Wednesdays 1 PM to 3 PM Venue: RSL Upstairs Committee Meeting Room

Gary Chapman 0438 501 023 [email protected]

Next term we are looking forward to a visit by Marion Holding, well known local historian. We invited Marion after looking at some 1950s holiday snapshots here in Lakes, and we were scratching our heads wondering where this was taken and where is that?

Mahjong We have had a good start to the year. Most of our members from last year have returned along with a couple of new comers, which is great to see. Everyone seems to have settled in well and enjoying the game of mahjong. We have a lot of laughs and fun, so anyone who would like to come along would be most welcomed. Cheers

Rhonda Biddle Library New members please note U3A has a borrowing Library situated between the two classrooms at the Lodge. You may borrow as many books as you like, no time limit but please remember that others may be waiting for the book you have. There is a “sign out and in“ register on the shelf. We also have movies and classical CD s for members to borrow, these are in Rm 2. There are jigzaw puzzles in the Office cupboard if anyone likes doing puzzles. For the time being our Book Library has reached capacity so please don't leave books. Thanks to all those who have donated books in the past, you have made a really good library for our U3A.

Course Coordinator Term 1 is now nearing completion and all Courses are running smoothly. There were a couple of new Courses introduced this year, with Criminology in particular being hugely popular. Happily, Judy has agreed to continue with this Course next term and to compliment that Trevor has agreed to run a Course on Fire Management. This will be on Wednesday mornings 8.30 – 9.30. I suspect it will be just as popular so keep your eyes open for an enrolment notice.
