Want to try something new: How about Netwalking?

HBP Members Helen Fraser of Orchard House (IFAs) Ltd and Sarah Crowther of Mercers Solicitors would like to invite members of the Henley Business Partnership to join them for a walk along the river on Monday 17 October 2016.

The designated meeting point will be at 12.30pm at Strada with the aim to for a walk for around 45 minutes to an hour, and then if people have time go to a cafe for a coffee afterwards. The motivation is to bring people together in an informal way and by walking involving a healthy activity in the middle of the day, which requires no special skills and is open to all.

So take that first step and come along.

3FM Breakfast Meeting8.30-9.30am (networking from 8am) 49-51 Bell Street, Henley-on-Thames Oxon RG9 2BG £10 for attendance and breakfast.

Hosted by Simon Dunster, around2it, business advisor.

Why not bring a new business associate along to see if the group is a good fit for their business? We still have three more meetings this year:

Friday 21 October 2016Caroline Sinclair, Ronald McDonald House – What charities wished you knew

Friday 18 November 2016Jane Gunn, The Corporate Peacemaker

Friday 16 December 2016Edward Briscoe, Wills in English – The Importance of Lasting Powers of Attorneys

The aim of the 3FM group is to network, promote business opportunities, catch up with existing partners and forge new alliances.

The group is a networking club, by the members for the members – there are no franchise fees to be paid or rules and restrictions. We take the best practice from other networking groups and clubs and ditch the rest to leave what we hope is a friendly, co-operative and exciting business generator for our members.

Membership is open to all including many from the same trade in what we believe is an abundant market where people buy from who they know, like and trust.

We want to promote good business in an ethical and co-operative way and urge all members to seek 1-2-1s with all the other members to get to know each other and their business in detail. This is because passing referrals and setting up alliances

is only really possible if businesses know, like and trust each other – so whilst this is a networking group, it might be said the main aim of the group is to promote and encourage 1-2-1s. That in turn will lead to the more and better quality business that we all want.

Helen Barnett, our new Henley-on-Thames Town Manager, writes:

“I have a wealth of experience learnt in the property and retail industries, specifically Bracknell, where I was Head of Marketing and Communication for the Regeneration of Bracknell town centre.“So that will help me hit the ground running in Henley; delivering on many projects, such as economic development, consumer promotions and events and corporate socially responsible projects like the Bracknell in Bloom, various awards and help for businesses.

“I enjoy the process of engaging with people, groups, organisations and businesses in progressing plans and helping them to be better. I am motivated by the sense of achievement and satisfaction one gets from delivery of a successful project, or event, which accomplishes something that helps others.

“I will be working with all the established groups like the Henley Business Partnership who meet and network regularly to develop activities in the town. In my previous role, I sat on the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership, Thames Valley Association of Town Centre Managers and many other committees, so I have a solid understanding of what goes on and where I can make a difference. I hope to do the same here in Henley.

“I have developed skills in marketing and communication aligned to retail, property, charitable, economic development, corporate strategy and overall town management.

“It is very important to gather information, research and speak to the individuals and groups about what it is they need to succeed or to help them do better. It is also imperative that I canvas everyone for their opinions from members of the Council, businesses, retailers and the community as a whole. This will then help me to formulate plans, this background and research will help to shape my immediate

actions and create the strategic, medium and longer term goals and objectives.

“I believe that Henley is a remarkable place to live and work with The Henley Regatta, The Henley Festival, The Literary Festival, The Living Advent Calendar and numerous other festivals, events and activities that are growing in prominence. Alongside the retailer offer, the hospitality and the catchment in which we sit.

“I shall be capitalising on all the great foundations that have been laid and working with everyone to gather additional momentum to make everyone incredibly proud to be part of a successful Henley.”

1. Small Christmas Trees Scheme 2016Once again this year, Henley Town Council has arranged with Window Flowers Ltd to provide small real Christmas trees with white lights as part of the festive decorations for the Town centre.

Businesses and residents can hire the trees and lights which will be erected from mid-November. This well-established scheme complements the other decorations throughout the town centre and the Council but relies on the support from both local businesses and residents.

The deadline for orders is Monday 7 November 2016.

2. Christmas Festival Event 2016This annual town centre festival is being held on Friday 2 December this year and the town council are encouraging local retailers to participate this year by offering local shops pitches at a reduced rate.

The Henley House & Garden Show takes a different angle next year – it’s going ‘green’.Focusing on repurposed, upcycled and all items ecological, the show will have a distinctively green look to it.

It won’t be such a large show in 2017, after 2 years in the town centre, we are moving to the new rugby clubhouse – a building that has recently been repurposed and upcycled.

We are looking for products and services dedicated to house and garden and especially those with a green slant. Local companies are the main focal

point of the show and it will be another fantastic opportunity to meet with other local businesses as well as the fabulous affluent and design savvy, Henley audience.

This version of the show is still in embryonic stage, so we are happy to hear new ideas.

Please put Saturday 20 May in your diary and contact the show director Niki Schäfer on [email protected], if you’d like to be involved in any way.

Eco-Henley tackles urban air pollution (UAP) and town centre regenerationNo matter how beautiful, historic or seemingly untouchable any location may appear to be – it is not immune from change.

Henley-on-Thames is no different in this unfolding century. Whilst Henley has a rich history, it is becoming impoverished by many of the problems that plague any densely populated area. One rapidly dominating issue moving to the top of the concern list is urban air pollution (UAP).

Across the globe UAP levels rose worldwide by 8% between 2008-2013 (source UN data). Whilst the most rapid rises have occurred in developing

countries like India, towns such as Henley here in the UK have also suffered from a remarkable degradation of air quality. Areas of particular concern are Hart St, the riverside at the traffic lights near the Red Lion hotel and Friday Street. Henley is a vital transport link across the River Thames. Traffic pollution is therefore greatly accelerated by lorries (that emit many times as much particulate as diesel cars).

Such pollution is potentially deadly. In recent years, University of Lancaster has discovered a rapid increase in the crystal ‘magnetite’ particles in human brains. These particles should not be there. They promote the rise of free radicals and this leads to the onset of accelerated conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Additionally, air pollution can lead to strokes, cancer and a range of respiratory

3. Sunday Shopping EventThis local shopping event on Sunday 11 December is designed to promote local retailers and encourage residents to shop locally in order to help create a thriving local economy.

Retailers will be encouraged to offer Special Sunday Promotions and festive refreshments to

attract shoppers into all participating shops.

Nolan Osteopathy

Working together for Henley-on-Thames | thehenleypartnership.co.uk | @THPHenley

Do you find yourself tossing and turning during the night in a valiant attempt to find that perfect sleeping position?Well you’re not alone. Millions of people in the UK struggle to get a good night’s sleep and neck, shoulder or back pain is often a key contributor to the problem. Sleeping repeatedly in the same position night after night can in itself cause the pain in the first place.

While there is no one right way to sleep, there are some sleep positions that we recommend to people who suffer with certain types of pain and medical conditions. Any sleep position will have pros and cons. For example, sleeping on your back can be helpful for lower back pain, but it

can aggravate digestive problems and can worsen snoring. Sleeping on your stomach isn’t encouraged as it can constrain your neck, put pressure on the lower back and shorten your calf and hamstrings muscles as you point your toes.

infections. Narrow streets act as a natural canyon for such particulate and trap it’s deadly effects for far longer than open space. Henley has a school facing one of the busiest artery roads in the county, and some of its residents are now complaining of asthma and other pollution-triggered illnesses. The Department of Climate Change recently ran detailed studies that concluded the costs to the NHS of treating diesel related health problems is ten times that of petrol!

Eco-Henley is aiming to remediate some of these tragic and life-debilitating issues by harnessing a range of naturally based solutions. One major initiative is pioneering ‘active’ living plant walls. Val Stoner and Richard Francis (of Sensescape) are currently working together to influence thinking and action harnessing local press, government, commercial companies and interested professionals.

Active living plant walls not only use plants to collect pollution and increase oxygen through the leaves of plants – but also use the soil they sit in and bacteria around the root system to clean air and remove particles at a rate that is 50 times more efficient than just plant leaves in isolation.

Eco-Henley is mobilising rapidly in the next year to help tackle UAP if the town wishes to remain desirable and successful. We value the help and support of Henley Business Partnership and it’s growing membership to achieve this.

Richard Francis of Sensescape demonstrates the ability of plants & their root systems to ‘eat’ pollution at a recent Henley 3FM Breakfast Meeting

Charity Update

The optimal sleeping position will ensure that the muscles do not shorten or stretch during the night and also ensure that the joints are not overly compressed. With this in mind, here are some tips relating to some common conditions:

Neck Pain

• Sleep on your side or your back and try to avoid sleeping on your stomach, as turning your neck in this position will compress the neck joint.

• Use a pillow(s) that is thick enough to fill the space between your neck and your shoulder, keeping your spine in a straight line. Make sure the pillow is positioned above the shoulder to ensure you don’t become hunched.

• A good tip is to put a rolled towel in the pillow to further support the neck if needs be.

Shoulder Pain

• It may sound obvious, but try to avoid sleeping on the side with the painful shoulder. Sleep on your back with a small pillow to support the bad shoulder.

• Alternatively, sleep on your other side and hug a pillow.

• It’s so important to ensure that the neck is adequately supported to take the pressure off the shoulder. If the neck is not supported, the nerves that run from the neck to the arm can get compressed, and this can result in numbness

or tingling, usually with the compression of a nerve from the sleeping position.

Back Pain

• The general consensus for many back problems is that sleeping on your back is the most comfortable. Keep a neutral position, with your spine aligned as if standing straight.

• Make sure your mattress is hard enough to stop you sinking into it. Very often, placing a pillow under your knees when sleeping on your back is helpful, as it will keep your legs raised and ease the pressure on your spine.

• Adopting a foetal position and placing a pillow between your knees can also help ease pain for many patients.

I hope you find these tips useful and informative. There are lots more on our website: www.nolanosteopathy.co.uk

If you have any questions about the above or the conditions we treat, please do not hesitate to get in touch. For those of you who may be unsure what Osteopathy is and how it could potentially help you, we offer all our patients a FREE 15 minute meeting with one of our osteopaths.

I am taking a team on the Dumball Rally across India from New Delhi to Goa in January in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

It’s a charity car rally, an extreme driving challenge for people that know very little about cars, and the odd person that does. We pimp up cars that have seen better days, and drive them for thousands of miles on the world’s toughest

To all of those who have supported our member Rosemary Brown here is an update on her charity appeal: Cutting our hair for COSMIC More Smiles Appeal 2016

“Just thought I would let you know that the deed has been done and also to say a massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored us. Although a little traumatic on the day, it is such a worthwhile cause and the end result is an awful lot easier to deal with and I’m amazed how relaxed my son is about the loss of his curls…

“There is still time to sponsor us if you would like to, just click here to go to our JustGiving page and help us smash our target!”

roads. For over a decade the Dumball has been goofing around in far flung corners of the globe. It’s a test of endurance: we conquer whole continents, in a week. But what it’s really famous for is the camaraderie, style and genuinely childish excitement with which we raise money for a great cause: Teenage Cancer Trust. There is no car rally quite like it. The Dumball is not a race. There are no prizes for first place. It has conquered Europe, Africa, and now touring Asia. The 2017 rally will be in Northern India where we are heading into the Rajasthani desert and picking up the keys to an old school Mahindra Jeep before driving it all the way to Goa!

The Teenage Cancer Trust are a fantastic charity, helping the 2500 young people aged 13-24 who are diagnosed with cancer every year. The Dumball has raised over £650,000 since its inception and following the Dumball legend Adam Horn’s completion of the 2007 Dumball to Istanbul, all too soon before he lost his battle with Leukaemia aged 22. 10 years on, Adam’s Dad, Dumball veteran Colin, joins us again. Please help us reach the £1 million target by 2020.

However, asking for donations to charity on the back of such a crazy idea is tough, so this year we have decided to hold a charity auction – taking place on the evening of 26 November in South Oxfordshire. We are inviting donations of goods, services or anything else you might feel you would like to give; we would be hugely grateful and it

would be a great way of publicising your business to a host of well-heeled Oxfordshire folk. Do also come along to the auction – details are yet to be released, but we will send out an email with the invitation in due course. In the meantime, do put the date in your diary.

Please email me at [email protected] or donate at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dumball17

Huge thanks,

Nick Pelly-Fry Design Director, Grand Design Blinds

PS. Last year’s rally from Chennai to Goa was covered by one of India’s largest newspapers, The Hindustan Times, read the article here: www.thehindu.com/features/metroplus/drive-for-a-dream/article8107281.ece

The 2016 rally will also be the subject of a TV series, due to air next year – watch the trailer here: vimeo.com/162559543

CUTTING OUR HAIR FOR COSMIC More Smiles Appeal – 2016

www.moresmiles.org.uk

Please watch our More Smiles Appeal video and help us to care for hundreds more critically ill children.

When I heard that St Mary’s Hospital, children’s intensive care unit in Paddington has to turn

away over 200 critically ill children each year because they don’t have the facilities I was

horrified.

Our son, Toby, was so lucky to be admitted to St Mary’s. At the age of 3 he

was struck down with meningitis for the second time in his short life and was

dangerously ill. It all happened in such a short space of time, it was

terrifying.

St Mary’s came to our rescue, scooped him up from the Royal Berks, who

didn’t have a children’s intensive care unit in those days, and saved his life.

We are eternally grateful and cannot thank the dedicate Doctors and Nurses

enough. Now I realise just how lucky we were that they had space for us

that fateful day in July 1998.

Toby, 18 years later, has just finished his 2nd year at University, and is a strapping 6ft healthy 21

year old who enjoys football, skiing, tennis and the occasional party! He is able to do all of this

because of the amazing treatment and care he received at St Mary’s.

We decided we had to help this appeal and so Toby and I are looking for

sponsorship by dramatically cutting our hair. Toby will be shaving his head

completely, those beautiful curls will be going… I will be cutting mine really

short so I can sell it to a wig maker and donate all the money to COSMIC’s

More Smiles Appeal. I have been growing my hair for over 2 years now and

it is nearly 20 inches – it will be quite a shock for both of us!

This is such a worthwhile charity – I know that is what everyone says, but I ask you please to

sponsor us if you can – the appointment is booked for Wednesday 10th August, 2016 at

Forresters in Pangbourne, photos to follow!

To sponsor us please go to our Just Giving Page

The St Mary’s Hospital More Smiles Appeal was launched last November by COSMIC and Imperial College Healthcare charity, and aims to raise at least £2million to towards a £10 million project to create a bigger, state-of-the-art facility. The remainder of the costs are to be funded by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare Charity. Every year, around 400 patients are cared for in the Children’s Intensive Care Unit at St Mary’s but it also turns away hundreds more critically ill children because it does not have enough beds. This means children may have to be transferred hundreds of miles for treatment. Last year, the unit had to turn away 233 children, more than half the number actually admitted. The new unit will have 15 beds, almost doubling the current number, allowing more than 200 extra children to be cared for each year. There will also be new equipment, a dedicated parents’ room and a private room allowing space for doctors and nurses to provide emotional support and care to families whose children are very seriously ill. The unit is a world leader in the understanding and treatment of serious infections in children including meningitis and septicaemia, as well as specialising in other life-threatening conditions such as seizures, asthma, sickle cell disease, severe injuries and helping children recover after major surgery.

Dr Simon Nadel, Children’s Intensive Care Unit consultant, clinical lead and COSMIC trustee said: “Our More Smiles Appeal will enable us to upgrade our facilities and offer our exceptional care to even more patients. This unit is one of only five general children’s intensive care units in London. Our campaign will save more lives and help us give even better care to more critically ill children and their families” The Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) is lending her support to the More Smiles Appeal as she was so

impressed by the care she received at St Mary's Hospital when she gave birth to her daughter Charlotte in May and Son George two years earlier. The Duchess said: "The thought of your child in an intensive care unit is harrowing for any parent and as someone who was so brilliantly cared for by St Mary's, I am delighted to support the Children's Intensive Care Appeal, and commend the important work of all those involved in the project".

Note to Editors:

The Children’s Intensive Care Unit Today the unit is an 8 bedded intensive care unit, with 2 high dependency beds, saving the lives of children with life threatening conditions such as meningitis, toxic shock syndrome, meningococcal septicaemia, pneumonia, and trauma. The unit has treated up to 7,000 children since it opened in 1992. All the children admitted to the unit are critically ill and have often been transferred to St Mary’s Children’s Intensive Care Unit from their local hospital to receive the specialised life-saving care the unit can provide. Without this support it’s unlikely they would survive.

More Smiles Appeal

Every year we treat around 400 children, but have to turn away over 200 children, who have to go elsewhere, sometimes as far away as Leicester or Glasgow. Our vision is a world class children’s intensive care unit able to treat every critically ill child who needs us. The More Smiles Appeal is a joint appeal between COSMIC and Imperial College Healthcare Charity to raise £2million to help fund the expansion of the Children’s Intensive Care Unit at St Mary’s Hospital, London. The refurbishment will almost double the current bed number allowing St Mary’s to treat over 200 more critically ill children every year; increase space around each bed and create a new parents room and bereavement room. COSMIC

COSMIC (Children of St Mary’s Intensive Care) was founded in 1994 to support and raise money for the Children’s Intensive Care Unit at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. The charity funds vital state-of-the-art medical equipment, a ground breaking programme of internationally significant research into life threatening childhood illness and provides support and accommodation to help families through one of the most difficult times imaginable. www.cosmiccharity.org.uk

Imperial College Healthcare Charity Imperial College Healthcare Charity raises funds for five London hospitals within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust: Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea, St Mary’s and Western Eye hospitals. Since 2009, the charity has awarded over £12million in grants to over 300 pieces of clinical research and healthcare projects across the hospitals, all of which aim to improve patient healthcare. www.imperialcharity.org.uk

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust comprises Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea, St Mary’s and Western Eye hospitals. With more than one million patient contacts each year, it is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country and, in partnership with Imperial College London, is the UK’s first Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC).
