Creating flexible spacesWork is taking place to update the Fox Café, at our Falmouth Campus, transforming the existing building and courtyard with a clear canopy and new deck to provide a flexible space suitable for seminars, events and exhibitions as well as extra cafe space.

We’re also making the most of the social space available at the Penryn Campus, increasing capacity in The Stannary Restaurant over the summer, and an extension to Koofi café later in the year. There’s more information on our plans for Penryn Campus at www.fxplus.ac.uk/future

Investing in research and teachingThe University of Exeter is investing over £10m in research and teaching on the Penryn Campus, with funding agreed for the next phase of our Science and Engineering Research Support Facility (SERSF). SERSF brings pioneering business, science and engineering together at our Penryn Campus and already provides space for the University of Exeter Business School, the Marine Renewables Team and our growing Centre for Ecology and Conservation. We expect SERSF II to be ready Autumn 2017 and SERSF III in Spring 2018, to house academic staff to further the campus’ world class research.

Cornish graduate’s work seen by millionsFalmouth University Photography graduate Nigel Maynard, from Porkellis near Helston, was one of just ten graduates nationally to have his work showcased throughout the UK on digital screens in busy train stations and shopping centres as part of a talent spotting campaign during July.

Communication Design students recognised at awardsStudents from Falmouth University’s School of Communication Design have been awarded 16 coveted D&AD pencils - the most from any single university in the world! The Design and Art Direction (D&AD) award scheme attracts student entries from all over the world, judged by leading professionals, and designed to challenge students’ creativity, craft and communication skills.

Award winning Student UnionFalmouth and Exeter Student Union (FXU) is a charity run by students, for students. Four full time presidents are voted in by students each year to represent their views and together with a team of student officers, work with the Universities and locally on issues that are important to those studying here. This year, the impact they make locally and nationally was recognised with top awards from the National Union of Students including Officer Team of the Year, Green Impact Excellence and Highly Commended for Internationalised Student Union of the Year. Find out more at www.fxu.org.uk

Film School joins global stageFalmouth University’s School of Film & Television has been invited to join CILECT - The International Association of Film and Television Schools – which nurtures the highest standards of audio-visual education through networking and collaboration.

Falmouth in top ten for graduate employmentFalmouth University is sixth in the UK for graduate employment, scoring an impressive 96.5% in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey (DLHE).

Lord Myners of Truro leads University of Exeter’s Cornwall graduationThe University of Exeter’s new Chancellor, Lord Myners of Truro, presided over this year’s Cornwall graduation ceremonies. Having been brought up in Truro, the ceremonies in Truro Cathedral had special significance for him. Our new graduates join an alumni community of well over 130,000 from more than 183 countries.

Falmouth top for creative sceneStudents have ranked Falmouth one of the top universities in the UK for creatives in the Which? University Student Survey 2016. More than 11,000 undergraduates were surveyed by Which? to find out more about their experience of university, with Falmouth rating one of the top for its creative scene.

Focus on ResearchGrowing our researchThe University of Exeter has bought land in nearby fields to continue our environment and sustainability research including the Ecolight project - Europe’s longest running experiment looking at the effects of artificial light on wildlife and ecosystems. We also plan to use the field on the Helston Road for renewable energy experiments to understand how to create cheaper, cleaner energy from the sun. By 2020 the field will also house our beehives for research into the impact of pesticides and habitat management on bees and how their behaviour affects pollination, crop yields and food security.

Research findings: Artificial light brings an early springOur Ecolight research shows that artificial light is causing spring to come at least a week early in the UK. The research led by a team of biologists based at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus highlights for the first time and at a national scale the relationship between the amount of artificial night-time light and the date of budburst in woodland trees. PhD student Robin Somers-Yeates, working with independent environmental consultants Spalding Associates in Truro, led the study which made use of data collected as part of the Woodland Trust’s Nature’s Calendar initiative. The findings provide important information for those in charge of lighting levels, such as local councils.
