COUNTY CONCIERGEEDITOR’S WELCOME

It is no secret that I love the autumn. Not for me the heat waves and rain storms of our wonderful British summers. No… give me a lovely autumn day with the sun gently dappling the trees as they turn from

green to gold. I adore the food, the fashions and the fun that go with the coming season. There is nothing I like more that to dress up warm and go for a bracing walk with my two Border terriers in the surrounding Berkshire and Surrey countryside, stopping for lunch at one of the many welcoming inns around us. The weather, and the exercise, make me long for roaring log fires, mulled wine and huge roasts with all the trimmings.

But enough of me…this quarter the County Concierge Team has been busy seeking out great ideas for you. Whether you are doing some home improvements or looking for a new home, we have something for everyone.

The same applies to getting out and about. As always we have our ever-popular What’s On page, courtesy of eagle-eyed team member Anne Jacobs. If you can’t find something that appeals, do call the Concierge Team on 01344 644 523 because there is so much to do this autumn and we can help. We have featured the brilliant carriage rides in Windsor Great Park but if you prefer something a little more hair-raising why not give Let’s Race F1 race simulator a try. It will definitely curl your hair! We sent one of our clients for a taster session and he has reported back in Lawyer to Formula 1 Star on page 12.

A real favourite with clients we are delighted to announce that Cliveden has completed extensive refurbishment and the hotel is now looking even more glorious. If you haven’t experienced this wonderful venue it is more than worth a trip. They have so much to offer apart from the hotel, restaurant and spa. Check out some of the events on offer and we know you will love it too.

Recently I was invited to see The Sash Window Workshop in Bracknell. Having lived and worked for years in Mayfair and St James’s I have suffered some of the worst traumas that these beautiful windows can give when they go wrong. So I was really fascinated to find out what this family-run business had to offer and I was truly amazed. From raw timber to finished article the workshop is a real find. Modern techniques are blended with old-fashioned craftsmanship to create some of the most beautiful windows and doors. I can recommend a visit if you are thinking of doing some work on your home…even if it is repairs rather than new.

So that’s a quick whizz round some of the features in this issue, but as always do call us if you need to plan a special day out, family party, business event or grand ball. Our experienced Concierge Team are here and happy to help in any way we can to make your life more fun at home, at work or at play. Check us out at www.countyconcierge.co.uk.

Have a great autumn

Best wishes

SPEED QUEENSBY SUE SEAKENS

It is no secret that I am something of a petrol head. I love beautiful classic sports cars and the thrill of driving them through stunning countryside in the UK and across

Europe. In days gone by I have driven some beautiful beasts including a Maserati Mistral Spyder and a Ferrari 365 2+2 GT4.

Nearby my home and office there are somewonderful car showrooms, full of tempting creations from the likes of McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. So it was with great interest that I read an article in The Sunday Times this summer exploring the fact that an increasing number of women are fulfilling a need for speed and seeking out luxury sports cars. So I thought I would follow this up with some research of my own. With the help of the lovely team at McLaren London I was able to interview some of their regular clients about their driving experiences. For obviousreasons I have not identified these ladies by name, but thank them all for their time and theirwillingness to share their thoughts with us.

Where does your passion for fast cars come from?It seems that the passion comes from childhood with memories of beautiful cars, the smell of high octane fuels and leather interiors. Most often the seeds of future driving aspirations came from a thrilling adventure in a special motor or a trip to a racing circuit. It appeared to be almost genetic where the whole family is into cars.

What was your first set of wheels?Quite a selection here including a purple Ford Fiesta 1.3 litre, a Ford Capri sprayed pink, and a blue convertible Mazda MX5. All still remembered the registration number of their first car and the fact that it was never quite fast enough to satisfy the need for speed.

Tell me about your best motoring memory? Most of the memories related to a time when the experience was shared and often pre-kids…although one of my own best memories was asking Maranello to install a baby seat in my Ferrari! One lady spoke of a 3 week trip to Italy in aLamborghini Gallardo. She remembered a tour of theLamborghini factory, getting booed by the Ferrari workers and monstering through the Col du Petit Saint Bernard with ‘OnDays Like These’ by Matt Monro on full blast…happy days!

What are you currently driving? One of the ladies turned out to be an even greater petrol head than

yours truly. She told me ‘We have a stunning 1970s Porsche 911s that we keep in the country, a McLaren MP4 12c in sapphire black for track days and weekends away, a speed yellow Porsche 996 GT3 for the true drivers ‘analogue’ track experience, a Porsche Macan S for our family car and a Renault Zoe for commuting (electric is the future)’.

How do you feel when cruising down the perfect road?Perhaps an obvious question but this was the best answer I think ‘Depends which car, who I’m with and where I’m going! We often go for drives; sometimes getting up at the crack of dawn to blast through London in a way that’s only possible at 5.30am or for a gentlemanly drive on the Cotswolds roads to a local pub but it’s car and location specific as to how it makes me feel’.

10 |

Page 11: Autumn 2015 4web

What do you look for when choosing a new car?All the ladies agreed that the car has to be fit for purpose. If your car isn’t fit for purpose it’s useless, but it was also about customer care and service. Top sports car designers agree that the female market is crucial to the future. So what key issues were there? Cost was obviously an issue but not necessarily the deciding factor.

Comfort and good vision featured highest followed by things like handling, performance, poise and beauty. Although good sat nav and Bluetooth also featured the ladies were not generally impressed by gimmicks and boys toys like in car entertainment.

Do you enter your car in any events?Events seemed to be a very important part of the motoring

experience for everyone. From organised track days and events like Goodwood Breakfast Club, Spring Sprints and Hill Climbs, to club events organised by the different marques. Such events often involve the classiest form of car cleaning you can imagine…preparing a car for the Concours D’Elegance is a whole newexperience if you have never tried it…but not for the faint-hearted

nor delicate finger-nailed!

How do your family and friends react to your ‘need for speed’?Family and friends are usually used to this, and may even share the passion, but it’s the people that don’t know you so well that are sometimes surprised by a woman’s depth of knowledge and passion for cars when it comes up in conversation. Some men take it as a challenge to see how much they know verses a woman, others are just amazed that a woman should be safe driving anything faster than a push bike. They generally back down after a while. One lady ventured ‘If I had a pound for every ‘surprised’ look I got when people realise I’m driving at a track day, and not just passengering, I’d be able to by a new McLaren Longtail with the proceeds’.

Where is your top favourite place to drive? Our leading Speed Queen said ‘In the UK Brands Hatch GP circuit is my favourite; I think of it as the UK’s version of Spa, closely followed by Silverstone and then the country roads around the Cotswolds. In Europe Spa is my favourite. It isthe most amazing and beautiful circuit, full ofundulations and amazing corners; Eau Rouge being the most mythical of them all. After Spa…any of the amazing mountain passes. I really want to go to Ireland to drive The Wild Atlantic Way soon, their answer to Route 66!’

What are your plans for future driving fun?So not surprisingly an annual pilgrimage to Spa in Belgium in September was high on the cards.Various events for cars and with cars…someinvolving family and some as couples. It did seem that a drive shared is the best experience. One of our ladies, pictured here with the McLaren 650S, shares her love of driving with her little dog

Bijoux. I agree with her…dogs are great company on a drive and they never question your skills behind the wheel.

“So Speed Queens of the world unite and help to spread the word that the best cars are not just made for the pleasure of men!”

FROM LAWYER TO FORMULA 1 STAR?BY DANIEL CHURCH

“W hat would be your dream job?”… Although I love the legal profession, given the choice of any job in the world I have to admit that I

always liked the idea of being paid millions of pounds to race around a track at 200mph. Having been a fan of Formula 1 for 25 years, I have now started to work out that it is perhaps not quite that simple.

I have known about “Let’s Race” for a while. Friends andcolleagues have told me how realistic the racing experience is and that any fan of motor sport should definitely give it a try.Fortunately the centre is open late, and I popped along to Horley one evening after work.

On arrival I was excited and confident. I had heard that thecentre uses similar technology to the real F1 teams, but part of me was still expecting a ‘computer game’ experience. Being a child of the 90s I was a big fan of console games such as ‘Colin McRae Rally’ and the Formula 1 series, and was expecting it to be similar.

Having arrived and checked in, it was time to go through to the briefing room for a safety video. We were greeted on screen byformer F1 star and Sky Sports presenter, Martin Brundle, whostated that anyone who was expecting an advanced ‘video game’ would be disappointed. Brundle gave us some important safetyannouncements, and stated that any on track crashes will be felt whilst sitting in the car and could lead to injury if we were not properly seated. My misplaced confidence quickly began to drain away.

It was time to go and find my car for the session. We were told that we would be racing around the Canadian GP track and that the lap record was around 1:16. This meant nothing at the time, but with hindsight I now know that this was very impressive. We were asked to squeeze into the cockpit of the car and I immediately realised why there are not many 6ft 2in Formula 1 drivers. This would be the first of many dents to my F1 career aspirations. When

“WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM JOB?”

12 |

Page 13: Autumn 2015 4web

FROM LAWYER TO FORMULA 1 STAR?BY DANIEL CHURCH

sitting in the car I was faced with three screens no more than 50cm from my face. They were covered in data and flashing lights which made me realise that this was more serious than I had thought.

I was waved out of my pit box for the 15 minute practicesession. I engaged first gear with a realistic ‘clunk’ and slowly edged out….straight into an oncoming car. My first F1 faux pas, and my first jolting crash. Whilst it didn’t hurt, it certainly woke me up as the car shuddered and moved around me. As I gathered my composure and made my way on to the track I soon felt the rush as I pressed hard down on the accelerator. The rush soon turned to chaos as the car began to spin wildly out of control. I thenremembered the bit in the safety briefing about pressing down the accelerator gently when moving away at low speeds. Theremaining 15 minutes were a blur of high speed spins and crashes. I don’t think that reverse gear has ever been so widely used in an F1 cockpit.

After the practice session we were ushered into the briefing room

where we presented with high tech printed telemetry data compar-ing our laps to the lap record. My best lap was a 1:36…not the 1:16 I had hoped for. We were given some expert guidance on where to make up time by the “Let’s Race” chap, and sent back out for the ‘race’.

The race was much better as I began to learn from silly errors. As each lap went by it became less surreal and easier to concentrate on the job at hand. I placed 5th out of 7 in total, with my best lap time coming down to 1:29. Some of the other guys that were with us were on their 3rd or 4th visit to “Let’s Race”. I can see now why they have returned, as they strive to correct errors and beat their previous times.

“Let’s Race” is far removed from my computer games of the 90s. It is an immersive, exhilarating and at times overwhelming experi-ence which leaves you feeling completely dishevelled, but crucially leaves you wanting more. There was a full podium presentation afterwards for those who didn’t spend most of their time reversing

out of tyre walls. The drive home was interesting, but where before I yearned for a car that would do 0-60mph in 5 seconds, now I am grateful for my comfy seats, visibility and air conditioning.

Based in Horley near Gatwick, Lets Race is the UK’s first and most advanced full motion F1 simulator centre. Their professional race car simulators feature a booming sounds system, creating an atmosphere that simply has to be experienced to be believed. Their F1 model offers speeds of up to 200mph to give a real rush whilst developing enough downforce to keep racers flying round the track when they hit trick corners. Lets Race’s blacked out sim room comes alive while spectators can sit in the grandstand to watch the race unfold making sure that everyone feels like they are part of a real Formula 1 race. Down on the illuminated grated floor their 10 networked sims allow drivers to experience a wide variety of circuits meaning drivers can race on the same tracks as the real F1superstars.

LOOKING BACK AT OUR SEASONROYAL WINDSOR RACECOURSE

The 2015 racing season is coming to an end at Royal Windsor, with the last race of 2015 being held on Monday 19th October, so as the racecourse prepares to

wind down for the winter, we take a look back at some of the exciting and thrilling events enjoyed by visitors during the last six months.

April heralded the start of the racing calendar and one of Royal Windsor’s most popular events; Monday Night Racing. Seasoned racegoers and new visitors were invited to try their hand atracing for free and experience the fabulous atmosphere at one of the most beautiful racecourse locations in the UK. The turnout and enthusiasm were so incredible, the event will be repeated for a second consecutive week.

As April drew to a close, adrenaline junkies enjoyed an Extreme Stunt Show whilst hop fans were treated to a chance to indulge in their favourite tipple at the Real Ale Day. The Family Fun Day was a chance for younger guests to meet Peppa Pig and her brother, George.

A flurry of popular guest appearances filled May and June with racegoers being treated to some excellent entertainment including

Take That tribute band, The Take That Experience, well known celebrity DJ, Fearne Cotton, and popular underwater children’s characters, The Octonauts. The racecourse also opened the doors to its new ‘Duke Street Bar’ in partnership with award-winning local business, Windsor & Eton Brewery.

The racecourse also played host to a variety of charity events throughout the year, including the Veterans 5k run, Help for

Heroes ride, Race for Life and Ride the Night for cancer charities and the Breeze cycling challenge

The racecourse jazzed up in June with four consecutive weeks of live music. Divas and dancing queens got their groove on as Whitney Houston, Beyoncé and ABBA tribute acts performed for racegoers late into the evening. June ended in patriotic style with an incredible three-day event dedicated to everything that makes Britain great at The Best of British Festival.

June also saw the return of the Thames Valley Expo to the racecourse, which offered businesses the opportunity to engage with each other whilst seeing the fantastic conference facilities the racecourse has to offer.

Summer was in full swing in August when visitors rocked the night away to a Queen tribute band on a journey back to the 70s. Ladies and gentlemen dressed to impress for Royal Windsor’s ever popular Ladies Day hosted by the wonderful DJ Jo Whiley.

As the sun set on summer, Royal Windsor hosted furtherentertainment from autumn afternoon racing to the BCA Race Day hosted by the students of the Berkshire College of Agriculture. The last race of the season will take place on Monday 19th October.

A NEW MOMENT IN HISTORYCLIVEDEN

Cliveden, the iconic 17th century stately home, and now one of the world’s finest luxury hotels, celebrates 350 years of making history with the completion of a

meticulous restoration programme within the main house.

But how do you bring back to life a grand country house that is not only a listed property, but also a hotel and a National Trusttreasure? The answer is carefully, very carefully. Interiordesigners Mario Nicolaou, Sylvie Le Maitre and their team of experts researched the Paris archives for fabrics and designs from the period which gave them the courage to be bold with patterns and colours. The balance between European influences and English tradition also reflects Cliveden history.

The result is glorious. It is still the Cliveden of old, only better. The Great Hall is a treat. Mario explains: “We wanted to celebrate its

“We have created a new atmosphere and a little bit of fabulousness.Make that rather a lot of fabulousness!”

16 |

character and evoke something luxurious”. The elements were all there, the high panelled ceiling, magnificent ornate fireplace, Nancy Astor forever glancing over her shoulder in John Singer Sargent’s portrait, the series of tapestries that dominate the Hall.... but they needed to be brought together in a quietly grand scheme thatunited past and present.

Opening off the Great Hall, the new bar in the Library isanother success which has turned into a bit of an after dinner drinking den including chairs in plush burnished gold and olive herringbone against a backdrop of honey coloured wood panelling. Downstairs is a departure for Cliveden with the creation of three new, interlinked, multifunctional spaces incorporating 21st century technology - ideal for presentations, entertainment spaces, or an area to dress up and theme for events and celebrations.

Every room is different and that has been both a joy and achallenge. The intention was to be true to Cliveden’s heritage as a stately home. Drama abounds as “every bedroom and suite has its own character,” as Mario explains. The quality of light unique to each room as well as ‘inherited’ works of art and original features, such as fireplace surrounds and panelling, have providedinspiration. The intention was to capture the spirit of Cliveden. This is surely the original party house, having entertained royalty and politicians and great writers and thinkers, from Swift to Shaw, over the centuries.

Summing up the restoration of Cliveden Mario says: “We have created a new atmosphere and a little bit of fabulousness. Make that rather a lot of fabulousness!”.

SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW 2015ALEXANDER JAMES INTERIORS & SUNSEEKER LONDON

In September, Alexander James Interiors teamed up with luxury yacht builder Sunseeker London during the 2015 Southampton Boat Show with an exclusively interior styled Sunseeker motor yacht.

Alexander James Interiors dressed and styled the interior of the impressive Sunseeker 86 Yacht with a collection of soft furnish-ings and home accessories to compliment and enrich the already exquisite styling found on board a Sunseeker motor yacht. With twenty years’ experience in creating award-winning interiors, the special styling of the 86 Yacht has introduced an extra dimension to a luxury partnership between the two brands.

The styling was inspired by the luxury yacht lifestyle and, with

the intention of showing Boat Show guests how the 86 Yacht can be a home from home, the scheme embraces a contemporary twist on the nautical theme. Centring on a modern and monochromicpalette, the plush cushions in black, white, taupe and grey are paired with chrome and ocean inspired accessories chosenspecifically to embellish the luxurious furnishings found on board the 86 foot masterpiece.

The internal styling is mirrored on the fly bridge; the black and white exterior of the boat is embellished by the deluxe faux fur

“We were keen to inject our passion, style and sophisticated luxury in to the already truly glamourous 86 Yacht and it’s been a pleasure working with Sunseeker as we embark on our first journey into the world of luxury yachting”

DAY OF GIVING15 OCTOBER 2015

On 15th October 2015, Knight Frank will again launch a day of charitable giving across all offices in the UK. All themoney raised through this event will be shared between the charities mentioned below. County Concierge are supporting the local Virginia Water office with advertising and by letting as many people know about this brilliant initiative.

For the Day of Giving, Knight Frank has chosen five very worthwhile charities, each with the focus of securing the future of the next gener-ation. These are:

LandAid: The UK Property Industry charity, which helps the young and disadvantaged nationally to access the skills and opportunities they need to reach their potential.

Mary’s Meals: Knight Frank’s Graduate and international charity – is a global movement that sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities; we have helped to build a school in Africa where children get a daily meal and receive education.

Crohn’s & Colitis UK: A national charity leading the battle against Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. We are fighting to achieve a better quality of life for the 300,000 people in the UK suffering physically and emotionally from these and other forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Ultimately, we want to find a cure.

Guide Dogs: Every hour another person in the UK loses their sight. The Guide Dogs Association are here to make sure they don’t lose their independence as well.

Bumblebee Conservation Trust: In the last 80 years two of the UK’s 25 species of bumblebees have become extinct and others havedeclined dramatically. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust is a national charity that is helping to save the sound of summer by supporting the conservation of all bumblebees, rare or abundant and raising awareness about the plight of the humble bumblebee.

Please note that every penny raised will go to the above mentioned charities.

AUTUMN BLUSHPINK FASHIONS

So often the trend for autumn fashion has slavishlyfollowed the seasonal hues - browns, reds and golds. But those with an eye on the fashion world are likely to be

revealing a more rosy hue. Think Pink…from the palest roses to deep reddish tones…in coats, dresses, high heels and bags.

There is a definite move towards natural fabrics, textures, layers, fringes and clothes that have movement and depth. Coats, ponchos and shawls are all must haves for the coming winter chills.

The pink theme can be matched with soft greys, browns, deepest burgundy and even black for a brilliant contrast…but remember…the whole look is totally feminine. Heels are still high, but chunkier and boots are as long as you like in softest suede and leather.

If you buy nothing else this season, you must have polo necks…skinny ones as a base for the total look or chunky, woolly ones to snuggle into. They featured on almost every runway in this autumn’s fashion shows. Team them with skirts, jeans, leggings but whatever you do get polo’d up ready for the wintry winds.

The fashions reflect the autumn shift to natural palettes in make-up. All the major brands are promoting soft, smoky, smouldering looks for eyes and melting pinks of all shades for lips and nails.Traditional foundations give way to lighter tinted bases and BB creams. Definition is added with touches of cream blush and more sculpted looks use basic browns. There is a definite homage to the 60’s look but far softer and more feminine.

Make a splash in the evening as you sparkle and shine inrose-hued cocktail wear teamed with pink clutch bags and nude heels. Those who love colour-blocking may also contrast palest pink with bold red and dark purple for a real show-stopping effect. Silk and chiffon layers are a must for special nights out but they can also be dressed down when paired with simple trousers or leggings.

Shown here are some great ideas for Thinking Pink, put together with the help of the brilliant team at creative agency BlackDiamond.

SIMPLE & DELICIOUSITALIAN DINING AT CASA NOVA

Situated in a prime location in the heart of Virginia Water, Casa Nova has become a favourite with discerning Italian foodies over the last ten years…and especially the County

Concierge team…we all love Casa Nova for our special lunches, dinners and meetings with clients.

Jose Fernandez and his team at Casa Nova are passionate about great food and wine, served in a modern, warm and invitingenvironment. A traditional Italian restaurant in the heart of the Surrey countryside, it offers freshly prepared dishes with only the best seasonal ingredients.

The a la carte menu is extensive and there are also daily specials

on offer, which give an ever-changing choice to Casa Nova’s loyal customers. Of course if you have a special request just ask, we have never managed to phase them yet, including a request to serve zabaglione for a client who had never tried it before…she is now hooked!

Starters could include the soup of the day; warm pear and Parma ham salad served with goat’s cheese dressing; eggs Florentine; prawns, Marie Rose salad and mixed leaf dressing; or melons and fruits served with a strawberry dressing.

On a personal note the Sunday roast beef ranks among the best in the area, with all the trimmings it is a firm family favourite and is

always on offer for Sunday lunch. For those of you who are passionate about fish, Casa Nova serves

the freshest dishes – hake, lobster, monkfish, salmon, scampi and scallops to name but a few. Menus are seasonal, so you will always find new dishes when you return.

Follow with dolci del giorno, the sweets of the day, and your visit to Casa Nova should be fulfilled. One of my favourites is the pineapple carpaccio – highly recommended.

Bookings are now being taken for Pre Christmas lunch anddinner, which is available from Monday to Friday. As always a superb lunchtime menu is also available for Christmas Day and Boxing Day but spaces are limited and always sell quickly so book early to avoid disappointment.

Whether you’re looking for a light refreshing bite, a cosy meal for two or a treat for family and friends, Casa Nova never disappoints. Buon appetito!

AUTUMNAL OFFERINGSCLARISSA KERSHAW OF THE GREAT FOOD COMPANY

A t The Great Food Company we are influenced greatly by seasonal greats – this month will we celebrate National Mushroom day on the 15th October. One of

the stars of the autumnal offerings. It’s easy to have mealswithout meat as the texture of mushrooms are fleshy but they are also cholesterol free, full of vitamin D and ancientEgyptians believed they were the plant of immortality – so abit of a good all rounder.

Our seasonal recipe combines portabella mushrooms with ricotta cheese and basil pesto

Bring 200g of Puy Lentils to the boil & cook for 30 minutes with garlic. Mix the Puy lentils with an onion, which has been chopped & caramelised, & top 8 Portobello mushrooms with the mixture. Brush the Portobello mushrooms with olive oil, season, & grill for 10 minutes. Mix a small pot of ricotta with the juice &

zest of 1 lemon & top the mushrooms and grill for another 5minutes. Grill 8 slices of ciabatta and whilst hot rub with raw garlic, place the mushrooms on top.

For the basil & tarragon pesto – pop a small bunch of each herb in a blender with a handful of roasted pine nuts, 100g of grated parmesan, seasoning & enough rapeseed oil (we find olive oil makes the pesto bitter) to make the mixture fluid. Drizzle the grilled mushroom & ricotta with freshly made pesto – gorgeous
