Feed

Limited Feed Ingredients

6 Ingredients typically used in coarse rations

BUT Citrus & Maize Gluten in limited supply

Available Energy Feed Ingredients

Cereals • With limited options on raw materials cereal

levels increase –acidosis a possible risk

• Not recommended to mix more cereals with

‘balanced’ feed

• Maize vs Barley

• Can it be justified in

finishing diets?

Available Energy Feed Ingredients

Soya Hulls – used to replace Pulps

• By-product obtained from

dehulling of soya beans

• Readily available

• Sourced from USA/Argentina

• Available in meal/pellets (USA best quality

pellets)

• Due to bulk density it can separate in bins

when mixed with only a few more

ingredients

Available Energy Feed Ingredients

Soya Hulls – used to replace Pulps

• Crude protein similar to barley ~ 10.5 %

• Energy value ~ 90% of barley

• High in digestible fibre (CF ~ 35%)

• Good complement to high starch/sugar diets

• Very useful in intensive beef diets – reduces

risk of acidosis

• Competitively priced

• Will feature in commercial diets

Available Energy Feed Ingredients

Wheatfeed (also known as Pollard) • By-product from flour milling

• EU source in pellets/Native in meal

• Mid protein ~ 16% (Gluten 20%) – will be used

• Similar starch to gluten ~ 18%

• Good digestible fibre

• Feed as a straight upto 3 kgs

• Good min profile for dry cows

• (low Calcium/high Phosphorus)

• Competitively priced

Available Energy Feed Ingredients

Molasses

• This year molasses is good value at

• Need to be set up to use it on farm as a straight (min 10 ton deliveries)

• Limited with max levels in cubes & coarse Eg. Max 3% for coarse in bins

• Other on-farm option –Hi-Pro50 with 14.5% protein

Available Protein Feed Ingredients

Dried Distillers Grains (Maize) • By-product of alcohol distilling

• Originates from US/Canada/EU

• Very useful mid protein at 26% CP

• High in energy ~ similar to barley

• Usually meal form – makes coarse rations ‘dusty’

• The high oil component (10% +) makes it difficult

to include in cubes at greater than 20% as pellet

quality deteriorates

• Expensive at relative to barley & rape

Available Feed Ingredients

Soyabean • Each €20 rise in price Soya costs Irish farmers €10 m/yr

• High quality protein and energy ~ 46% CP

• Beef feeds 2012 – a ‘luxury’ ingredient

• In beef diets it doesn’t make sense

• Look at rape as an alternative

• May feature in high protein balancers

• Can be replaced with rape/distillers

and rebalance overall energy of diet with cereals

• Every 10% inclusion soya costs €55/ton of feed!

Available Feed Ingredients

00 Rapeseed Ext • By-product of oil manufacture obtained by extracting

seeds of rape (contain 45% oil)

• Originates from Europe, Canada, Ireland

• Irish expeller rape meal higher in oil

– be careful at high feeding level - upset rumen

• Very useful protein at 34% CP

• Usually meal form – makes coarse rations ‘dusty’

• At high inclusion levels palatability may be an issue

• Don’t feed more than 2 kgs/hd/day

• Excellent value for money against soya/distillers

Typical Mix

30% Barley 25 % Citrus Pulp

20% Gluten 21% Maize Distillers

2% Minerals 2 % Molasses

14% Crude Protein

High Energy UFL 0.96, UFV 0.92

• Today 45% of this ration is unavailable

• What are the options?

Typical Mix

40% Barley

30 % Soya Hulls

21% Maize Distillers

5% Rape

2% Minerals

2 % Molasses

14.4 % Crude Protein

High Energy UFL 0.95, UFV 0.93

Commercial

Feeds

Scarce on Fodder

Commercial Rations

Suitable as a General Purpose Ration

that contains NO minerals

Can be fed to conserve silage stocks

Can be fed to weanlings/store

cattle/in-calf heifers and dry cows

BUT

It must be balanced with appropriate

on-farm minerals

Beef Crunch

Suitable for most stock on farm for

helping to conserve silage stocks

16% protein, barley based ration

Includes Cattle Minerals

BUT

It is NOT suitable for ad-lib feeding due

to high trace minerals

Feeds Suitable for Ad-Lib

‘Formulated to do the job in hand’

Cereal based diets (Maize & Barley)

& balanced for digestible fibre with Soya Hulls

Increased ‘buffering’ capacity

Macro minerals to reduce risk acidosis

Contains trace mineral level suitable for ad-lib

Brett Hi-Protein Balancers

Tailor made for complementing

farm cereals/beet

/wholecrop/maize silage

Protein varies from 20% - 35%

May include soya

Balanced for Calcium/Phos

and trace minerals

Brett Pre-Calving Feeds

Tailor made for feeding at 2-3

kgs/day to in-calf heifers and

cows on straw based diets or

on poor quality/limited silage

Balanced correctly for

minerals – healthy cow and

calf and plenty of biestings

Autumn 2012

Complete rations better value

than straights

Be mindful of adding extra

cereals to rations

Soya Hulls/Distillers/

Rape/Wheatfeed

in commercial diets to

overcome Pulp/Gluten dilemma
