Time to rediscover ‘homesweet home’As sunny days turn crisp and mists drift across thelandscape, we can’t help but fall for the magic ofautumn. It’s time now to come inside, to curl up with agood book or pull out long-forgotten board games forshared fun with family and friends. It’s also the perfect time to indulge your love of finethings, to be inspired by the new season and dress yourhome for warmth as well as beauty. How? It’s easy! Allyou need to do, for example, is add some beautifullyembroidered cushions or juxtapose an ornately framedmirror against the smoothness of a porcelain vase. Forthis autumn is thick with texture, mixing the rough withthe smooth in a colour palette that evokes the spirit ofthis romantic time - chocolate brown, chestnut, mushroomplus the lightness of café latteand a splash of petrol blue.

Smart idea : give a roominstant chic by placing a groupof candles of differing sizes ona tray or metal plate.

BotanicalBrio!Creating a strikingautumn display hinges onthe relationship betweenthe vase and the flower. It doesn’t have to becomplicated, instead focuson the visual impact thatcomes from choosing a vasethat highlights and enhancesthe ruggedness of a proteasay, or the gentle beauty ofphalaenopsis orchids. Andwhy use just flowers? For atwist on the traditional, trybranches of berries, seedpods and even the frothyheads of seed grasses.Definitely a bouquet with adifference.

Smart idea: choose avase of an unusual shape ortexture and add just onestem. Unfussy but striking allthe same.

Tina Nordström :Advice from a top chefSince her first cookery program was aired in2001 Tina Nordström has become one ofScandinavia’s most popular chefs. So what is herown kitchen like? A place of culinary pleasurefilled with good things including plenty of locally-sourced produce.

SIA: What was most important to you whendesigning your kitchen?Tina: Before I began the design I thought abouthow I moved about and worked in my kitchen. Iasked myself: where are the best places for theoven and sink? And will I have enough space fora beautiful chopping board?

SIA: When entertaining, how do you create acalm atmosphere in the kitchen and around thetable?Tina: The atmosphere must always be relaxed. The secret is to stay calm. Everything doesn’thave to be ready in time for the arrival of yourguests. Let them relax with a glass of wine whileyou get on with any last-minute preparations.

SIA: Watching you cook on television, it allappears so easy. What are your tips for creatinggood food without panicking?Tina: Think about what you want to do beforeyou start, stay relaxed and really take pleasure incooking. There are so many great cookbooksand internet sites out there, where you can findrecipes and inspiration. The most important thing:enjoy yourself!www.tina.se

THECREATIVEHOTHOUSEFrom the first sketch to the finished product, the making of aSIA collection is a detailed and meticulous process. To see forourselves just how it all comes together we went behind thescenes to see how the Braga collection of china was created.

It all begins in the office of the SIA designers. Their mission? To createa line of timeless and beautifully proportioned china. First theframework of the collection is decided upon, from the materials to thelook and the feel. This done, sketches are made, such as these hereof the Braga jug. Once this design has been approved, the rest of thecollection, from salad bowls, to serving dishes, storage boxes and oiland vinegar sets, is conceived. Then to Portugal, the home of expert manufacturers in glazedceramics. The first sample is hand-thrown in clay, then glazed andfired. SIA’s designer then carefully checks the finished product toensure that the design as well as the thickness, colour and glaze areexactly right. Small irregularities, caused by the jug being hand-made,are celebrated rather than discarded for this is what will give thecollection its unique character. Once signed-off, the mould is madefrom this first hand-made sample, and soon the production processbegins. A few weeks later Braga is ready to go into the shops – andyour home.

The CasualCharm of

an AutumnTable

Autumn is a time for relaxing meals with friends and family.Perhaps they begin in the kitchen with a glass of wine butsoon they move to the table where the main meal begins.

A beautifully but still casually dressed table is essential for makingyour guests kick back and enjoy themselves. Here the forever chiccombination of black and white is made less formal with naturalfabrics and simple ceramics. Glowing gently in the candlelight, thesmall bouquets of white flowers are captivating. Together they createa mood that welcomes everyone to the table and a good time isguaranteed.

Smart idea: A simple way to create an eye-catching centrepieceis by alternating low-slung vases of flowers with candles in glassholders of varying sizes. Place them in pairs for a balanced look.

Invite graphic chicinto your living room ROCKmeets highGlamThis autumn elegance takes on quite a different look.Smart yet with more than a touch of glamour, blackand white is updated with metallic lustre that comesalive under the glow of candlelight.

Large scale mirrors add to the soft rock feel by washing lightaround the room to further enhance the shine. The look isgraphic but the straight lines are mellowed by sensual shapesand touch-me textures - think velvet, leather effect andshimmering fabrics; embroidered cotton but also the luxury offaux fur. And to finish, a soothing scent that brings nature intothis strong urban mood. Discover the new Mystical Forestperfume that’s part of SIA’s Style & Spirit range, and temptyour senses with a delicious mix of citrus, spices, cedar, whitemusk and fragrant Manila resin.

Smart idea: create a decorative still life with acollection of vases and jars that play with volume, colour andform. Choose varying sizes as well as curvy shapes andcontrasting textures, from smooth porcelain to beaten metaland even glass. Add one of two floral stems that are graphic, not sweetly pretty, to complete the look. Done.

Metallics andmirrors create a new style elementThis season’s sophisticated template is all about playing with contrasts - a richlydecorated candlestick next to the purity of a glass hurricane, a statement glasschandelier suspended above amirrored table of sharply geometric lines. Togethernot only do you have the interplay of opposites but the lustre of the materialsand the reflections they create add another, and quite breathtaking, style element.Similarly, silvery cushions sparkle all the more when set against faux fur andmirrored columns are a foil to oversized ceramic jars of greenery. Chic glamouranywhere in the home.

Autumn’s graphic mood perfectly suits the classic beauty of the white flower. For a spectacular display,go dramatic with the statuesque calla or orchid. With flowers such as these what would otherwise be an everyday bouquetis transformed into a graceful sculpture. True art.

Smart idea: maintain the structure of a bouquet with a bejewelled napkin ring. Practical but beautiful too.

Your book offlower trends

As with fashion the world of floral art follows the mood ofthe season with trends that evolve throughout the year.Again you can rely on SIA’s style gurus to accuratelydecipher the next big thing. This autumn the look is all about intensecolour - rich reds, hot, sexy crimsons, the deep shades of a Bordeaux vintageplus the full spectrum of dusky pinks and purples. Flowers of the season includeroses, dahlias - the neat Pom Poms to the more flamboyant Majestics - as wellas wild asters. Red is the starting point of any display and for this you can’tignore anthurium, Vanda and Phalaenopsis orchids as well as banksia andprotea for exotic luxury. To these add a more rustic element with branches of berries and even rhubarbleaves. This season’s love of contrasts can be seen with flowers too, with themixing of the delicate and the tough, the local with the exotic. Fabulous!

Floral art’s new rules

A truly beautiful bouquet needs theperfect vase - otherwise its style andbeauty can easily be lost.

If the shape, colour, material are not inharmony they will fight against each other andthe effect will be one of chaos instead ofbalance. What you choose is, of course, downto your personal taste but whether it be thetransparency of glass or the opaqueness ofceramics, with this autumn’s rich palette it isbetter to choose a neutral coloured vase so itcompliments rather than clashes with theflowers. When it comes to shape and size - bebold!

A round bouquet can look as spectacularperched atop a tall, slim vase as it can in onethat is low-slung and round. A final word - youdon’t need to stick to traditional vases.Gorgeous floral arrangements can lookamazing in the most unusual of containers, from a sweet tin to a pretty bowl. Notconvinced? Then head to your nearest SIA storeto be amazed - and inspired.
