canteen s new staffHi Everyone my name is Teal Lynch and I am proud and very excited to be the new Member Liason Co-ordinator for Auckland. My background is corporate events management and business administration and I also have a degree in Beauty Therapy. I live on the sunny Hibiscus Coast and I love walks on the beach, music, having a good laugh and most importantly having lots of fun. I had the pleasure of meeting some of you at the Fishing Competition at Maraetai and the Art Work Shop in Auckland. I am definitely looking forward to meeting you all and seeing you at some upcoming events in the near future.

Teal

Wayne Cherry“For going that extra mile and talking to his old primary school to run a mufti day to raise money for CanTeen. Great example of the value “own it”. Good on ya Wayne!

MAG’s supportMt Albert Grammar was one of the lucky schools to win a $1500 prize pack of vouchers from Pams, Farmers and BP for their excellent efforts during BC 08. CanTeeners Sally, Emma and Alison Ainley are former students of the school so MAGS had a great reason to support CanTeen. Here’s MAG, CanTeen and Foodstuffs at the presentation.

Speed Racer!CanTeener Jeff Thumath has been doing some very cool things with his athletic prowess! “This year I have become the national 200 meter champion. I made the final in the 200 meters at the Australian Championships and have qualified for the world University Games which are held in Serbia in July 1-12. I am also the long jump and 200 meter Auckland Champion.” Well done Jeff and we look forward to seeing you at the Commonwealth Games!

Restaurant AssociationOur friends at the Restaurant Association of NZ pledged to match the highest amount raised by any of

their members during BC 08. The winners were the wonderful McFarlane’s Group of Taranaki with over $2k raised! Jesse, Justin and Jade went along to accept the cheque from CEO Alistair and say thanks.

Down Across Up BookGenna and Kerrin Revell horse trekked around NZ for CanTeen and raised $33,000 for us in the process. They now have a book of their amazing journey. You can buy the book from all good booksellers.

CAnteen Art Workshop 2009Art Workshop was held in April this year at St Cuthberts in Auckland. 20 of our talented ‘arty’ members (including a token male thanks Greg!) attended.

Some amazing artwork was produced over the four day period and those that were involved are to be commended for their efforts and creative flair! Selected pieces from this workshop will appear on our CanTeen Christmas cards at the end of the year – so stay tuned!

It is not all hard work and paint brushes – there was plenty of chill out time and we had a lot of laughs along the way.

A HUGE thanks to St Cuthberts (where the Art Workshop was held and where we stayed) and Diane, Carol and Heather the wonderful teachers who provided their creative genius and fabulous skills! Jarnia

Take the Bandanna

Challenge 2009!The annual Bandanna Challenge is CanTeen’s largest fundraising campaign.

Money from sales of bandannas provides a significant part of the funding needed

to run the programs, camps and other opportunities for CanTeen members (like

you) across the country.

We Need You!Schools are a huge help to CanTeen when it comes to selling bandannas –

we couldn’t do it without them.

Your Challenge is to sign up just ONE school to support

CanTeen by selling bandannas.

If every CanTeener did their bit we’d raise a record amount of money.

We know it’s not easy so we’ve inserted a How-To Guide in this issue of your

National Magazine.

president s report

chief executive s reportAs your new CEO I’ve been getting about the country as much as I can to meet up with our members and staff. As you might expect, I have really enjoyed it. I have found a whole bunch of great people along the way and while at it, I’ve spotted our clear affection for food. In three months I have gorged myself in a veritable rolling banquet that goes like this; Black forest cake at the office reopening in Invercargill; curry on members night in Dunedin; Latte with the ladies in Christchurch; ‘design your own’ sandwiches with the committee in Wellington, Pizza’s on members night in Palmerston North; mega sausage sizzle in New Plymouth, Easter eggs with the MAC and chocolate with the Auckland committee. For the few branches I have yet to meet, I look forward to doing so and you really don’t have to feed me, honest!

I’ve got a request of you all. Show your appreciation to our staff. You know a smile goes a mile and a sincere “thanks” is never declined. Our staff and volunteers are truly remarkable people; with big hearts and tons of energy, they are doing great stuff for you all over NZ. Please show them you notice it.

At the time of writing this report the Crusaders are making their last minute surge into the top four. By the time this magazine is published we will have won yet another “Super” title under the new guidance of our esteemed leader, Todd Blackadder. Caaanaaaabry…caaanaaaabry.

Right, O.T. (on topic)

Winter is definitely now upon us. Whilst it is cold outside CanTeen is still hot with activity. I have been hearing of some great fundraising work as well as some great activities taking place. Keep up the good work.

It is great to have Foodstuffs and the Pams brand on board for another year. Foodstuffs and Pams have been a great sponsor of CanTeen over the years, through their sponsorship as well as others around the country we have been able to continue to Support, Develop and Empower young people living with Cancer. Thanks heaps guys!

In terms of Board and MAC stuff we have had a couple of great topics come out of our discussions. One of which is developing a better way to communicate to you fantastic members. These ideas are still in their conception stages but

look out for something in the future.

As many of you know CanTeen offers leadership training every year. This year is seeing a pilot of a new concept with a revamp of content and presenters. A sub committee of the board including national staff have been working hard to provide this pilot and refresh what training CanTeen offers to our members. If you are currently in a leadership position or are thinking of getting into a position of leadership make sure you get involved.

On the whole leadership note branch AGM’s will be coming up in August. This is a great opportunity for you to get involved in YOUR CanTeen. Getting involved in your local committee allows you to have a say on what goes on in your division. Taking up opportunities such as branch president, vice president, board rep or committee member looks great on a CV and gives you some great skills for life.

Well that’s all folks. Make sure you keep warm and above all, KEEP IT REAL, OWN IT, DO IT RIGHT, ONE TEAM, RESPECT and my personal favourite LIVE LIFE!

Matt TrumanNational President

A group of MAC members and staff have put together some cool new leadership development modules designed to help members add more skills to their leadership ‘tool box’. The first programme will run in Otaki in July with 24 members investing in their capability with public speaking and leading meetings. This is bound to be a win/win for the participants and for all of CanTeen. If you want to be a part of this programme some day, put your hand up but be ready to put in the work too!

See you soon

SUMMER CAMP

northland

Mobility Scooters & Archery

Mobility sCooter rACe / ArChery eveninGCanTeen Northland was sponsored to enter the mobility scooter race by Barfoot and Thompson. It was a local fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation and involved 20 teams of 4 people navigating a course (and challenges) in the Whangarei Town Basin on Mobility Scooters. While we didn’t win we were the only team to do some “offroading” and managed to score some vouchers to the local Lazerstrike and 10 Pin Bowling Complex. All in all a lot of fun had by the team of Gina and Ben Iggo, Elliot Gill and Bonnie Vale.

After our May Committee Meeting we all headed up to the gym at Whangarei Girls High School for a night organised by the local Mt Tiger Archery Club. All ten Members involved were kitted out with bow and arrows and after a safety instruction and some lessons we spent an evening firing our arrows at a selection of bulls eyes. Once we mastered this we had a competition involving balloons attached to the bulls eyes. Lots of fun and some of us were even told we had “natural talent”. Next we have been invited to shoot in the wild at the Mt Tiger Club at Whangarei Heads on a farm. Might have to get some more practise in before this!

suMMer CAMpPaihia, Bay of IslandsAfter a long trip, we finally arrived at Paihia and headed to Actionworld. We tried mini golf, impossible to ride bikes, slides, jousting, the trapeze and tightrope. Dinner and dancing at the RSA topped off a great day before meeting up with the travellers from Auckland. An early morning start had us learning our waiata before heading to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. We saw the ginormous waka, the Busby Manor and the exact site where the Treaty was signed. Inside the marae we learnt the meanings of certain carvings and then made our way to the beach for the 4 hour kayak to Haruru Falls and back. We had just enough energy left to rock out with guitar hero and singstar and a CanTeen fashion show. Another early morning and we were back on the water to the Hole in the Rock and on the way back we were extremely lucky to see a pod of dolphins! At Russell we had a quick look around and then back on the ferry to Paihia and home - whew. It was a great weekend and we all had heaps of fun!

Gina Iggo

JuMpstArtSunday at 7am Leeann and I left Whangarei to get to the Auckland office to meet up with the other Members who were jumping, and we all headed off to Whenuapai Air Base. We had to sign in and get organised on our flights. My flight wasn’t scheduled till 5.30pm so I watched the others jump and got nervous. The Professional Jumpers were coming down really fast and just before they hit the ground they would pull the handles and land perfectly, they just made me more nervous. At 5.30 I met my instructor Freddy Hofmayer and got my safety gear on then went to the Hercules. I was the last person to jump but that wasn’t bad because one of the crew showed me all the buttons and gauges in the front. We went up to 10,000 feet and as I was last out we flew over the Drop Zone three times before I had to go. I was really scared but I waddled to the end of the platform strapped to Freddy then we jumped and it was awesome. Well worth the wait. He opened the parachute and loosened the buckles holding me to him when we were still like 3000 feet in the air. We all got certificates and made our way home after our long day.

here CoMe the trikers!!!What is your first thought when your local MLC calls up and asks you if you want to go and meet some Trikers? For me it was little three year olds riding those little plastic trikes, really it was. Let’s just say it’s definitely not little plastic trikes (or three year olds that I think about now).

Racing down to the airport roundabout and back, scoring weird looks from a lot of old people.

I’d like to give a big thanks to Steve and his crew for all the money that you raised for us and the rides afterwards it was brilliant.

Amy Boswell CanTeen NSI

Cody CurrAnFrom all of us here at CanTeen Canterbury / West Coast Branch…a big shout out to Trudy, Aaron, Sya and

Scotty for organising the Cody Curran Memorial Pool Tournament! Cody was a courageous member who

lost his battle with cancer last year. To celebrate Cody, his family and friends organised this wicked event

with all the proceeds going to CanTeen. The event was held at Lyttleton and the community support was

overwhelming! The day was filled with rounds of pool, music, raffles and an auction which included two

signed rugby jerseys from Cory Flynn. These legends managed to raise a whopping $4715.15 in one day!

Well done! Thanks so much for your support guys…you’ve made a huge impact on our branch which

means we can continue to support Young People living with Cancer.

psC reportHi there, well things have been pretty hectic since starting at CanTeen in February! We have launched the “CanTeen Cruiser” which is a very cool cabinet (with wheels so it can actually cruise…..) with heaps of cool DVDs, magazines, games etc to keep that boredom at bay for those members undergoing treatment.

I have also been kept busy meeting new members and it has been great to see these members attend recent activities. At the moment we are updating the hospital iPods and developing Activity Boards for patient members to use to plan their days whilst in hospital. Over the next couple of months we will be developing journals/diaries for patient members to use and getting amongst some creative journaling over at the hospital and starting up DVD/Pizza Nights in the ward again.

Apart from that…….. just spending lots of time catching up with members and fundraising so that we can continue to provide awesome activities and resources for members. See you soon!

Jane

roCkonz Recently, Canterbury/West Coast Branch were the lucky recipients of the fundraiser, RockOnz. One condition however, was for the CanTeen members to form a band….and that we did! We named ourselves ‘Lucky 8’ and because we were so damn good, we got to play on TV1’s Breakfast, in the Cathedral Square and even in the Town Hall with Shane Cortese and Frankie Stevens! Wow! Lucky 8 consisted of Haley O’Neill (trumpet), James Ferry-Parker (guitar), Stu Hunter (bass), Rachel Allen (lead vocals), Mikaela Marshall (keys), Matt Ferris (the egg!), Jason Flewellen (drums) and finally me, Prudence Kidd (back-up vocals). A big thanks to these guys who gave up heaps of their own time…you all can be really proud of yourselves! Also, we’d like to say a big thanks to Cecile & Dion, the producers of RockOnz, for including us in this journey…you guys are great!

A few words from the Rockstars themselves…

Apart from being a rockstar for a week, playing on a huge stage with funky lights... Getting all dressed up and then riding to our concert in flash old cars to walk up red carpet? Best bit without a doubt!

James Ferry-Parker

I really enjoyed being in a band with a bunch of amazing CanTeeners!!! Seeing the progress we made together as a group right from not being able to play anything to the end product of being able to play half hour sets in front of hundreds of people and all the while having an absolute blast!!!

Rachel Allen

the drury trust vAriety ConCertA big thanks to Ray & Nancy Drury, Marilyn & Richard Hore and Amy Boswell for inviting CanTeen Canterbury / West Coast Branch to be a part of the variety concert back in April. This concert included musicians such as Richard Hore….the most amazing organist ever, Graham Wardrop, a pro guitarist and not to forget….Lucky 8! We were incredibly grateful to be a part of this and with the final proceeds reaching $1500…that topped it off!

Thanks so much to those who came and supported us.

Prudence Kidd

iron MAiden

The British heavy metal legends, who last visited here 16 long years ago, are all about theatre, drama, and, most importantly, flamboyant heavy metal. Be it singer Bruce Dickinson donning a feather mask for Powerslave or waving a torn Union Jack during the triumphant racket of The Trooper; to the giant robotic Maiden mascot Eddie who wandered on stage; to the flailing line up of guitarists lead by

band founder and master bass player Steve Harris.

The lucky 5 CanTeen members showed up to a massive crowd of metal fans with Iron Maiden blasting in the background. Not knowing what to expect we piled into the stadium. What a concert!

A huge thanks to Justin Ure, who not only arranged for the members to experience the concert, but also did a huge fundraiser for CanTeen in the week leading up to the event. His efforts raised an impressive amount for Canterbury / West Coast! Special mention also to Rion and the team that supported Justin's efforts from here in NZ as well as Australia.

pres report Hey there dudes and dudets, here’s my first presidents report. Well I’m enjoying the CanTeen flow down here and the way we groove to our own beat. We’ve had some awesome support from the Mosgeil Rotary Club and all our supporters for summer camp.

The committee is cruising along, being creative, and most of all productive. The values training went smoothly and everyone seemed to enjoy the whole experience. We’ve done some awesome activities over the last wee while, Paintball, Lazer force, Trip to Oamaru where we went to moeraki boulders. These have had good member turn outs and we’ve met up with members from out of Dunedin. The Tuesday night meet ups are still on, and new members are welcome.

Jump start has been amazing for the members who got to go and we’ve seen revived enthusiasm for CanTeen. We already have one lined up for our committee.

In the pipeline at the moment is South Island camp for 2010. If you’re interested in helping organise, talk to your Staff and they’ll give you more information.

That’s it for me, TTYL

southlAnd offiCe renovAtionHi all! After spending our CanTeen get-togethers each week in an area not nearly big enough, we decided it was time to expand.

We now have a fantastic looking office and LOTS more space!

On Thursday 14 May, David Pierce CanTeen’s new CEO made the trip down south to officially open our “new” office, with family and friends joining us. (Thanks for making the journey south David.)

A huge thanks to our volunteer Serra, who made some very tasty food for us and to Maureen & Sharon for helping us organise our opening.

Taryn Smail - Southland

MoreAki bouldersWe arrived at Moreaki Boulders and met up with the Dunedin group who were already checking out the boulders. After being attacked by Maureen and her camera we went up to the restaurant and played some cool games while waiting for our dinner. After eating a huge meal we all headed home feeling happy and full.

the rotAry Club of MosGiel – house AuCtion.

It all started when Sharon, and Caleb Lesa (a CanTeen member) went along to talk to The Rotary Club of Mosgiel’s monthly meeting to tell them a little bit about CanTeen and for Caleb what CanTeen means to him – The Rotary club liked what they heard and CanTeen Otago were selected to become one of three recipients who would receive the proceeds of a three bedroom house the Rotary club were building. Sharon and I attended the auction on 28th March - The Rotary Club of Mosgiel did a fantastic job of constructing this wonderful home along with securing the support of local businesses and we thank them all. Sharon was then asked to attend the presentation dinner where she was presented with a cheque for $17,000 for CanTeen Otago!

Maureen MLC Otago

GArven hoMesteAd - bAlCluthAOtago and Southland met up for a paintball war recently – the weather couldn’t have been better, the hot sun made for some steamy action and made running around in the grass easy. Andrew Wood in his wheelchair was hidden behind the mesh with his paintball gun pointing through it, while the rest of us charged recklessly at each other – guns blazing!!! The result – many bruises and a hell of a good time! Not sure who won (who cares). Thanks Garven Homestead!

April’s activity was games night at the office where the members got to test their skills at Cranium and of course enjoy a big feast of sausage rolls and other nibbles that we all brought along.

This month our chocolate making afternoon had a really good turnout and we ended up with 50 bags wrapped and ready to sell. It was my first activity and it was cool to meet all the other members at the East Cape office. They were all so welcoming and I immediately felt at ease relating with them as they understood what I have been through.Phillipa 16. nelsonMlC report for nelson/MArlborouGhHey guys, what an awesome year it has been so far! It has gone so quickly I can barely keep up with everything

that has been happening!!

The year kicked off with a WICKED National camp in the Naki which was surpassed only by our FANTABULOSO Summer Camp in Kaikoura.

The lovely Paige O’Shea did us proud by modeling young designer Amanda Gadsby’s creation at the Noveau Design awards and we had a sensational but soggy time at Nelson’s annual Trolley Derby with the exceptionally designed (if I do say so my self!) trolley entry the FLYING BANDANNA which won two out of three of its races!!

On a sad note Nelson/ Marlborough has recently had to farewell our beloved President Chris McIntosh who had the audacity to celebrate his 25th birthday. Chris has proven to be a hugely valuable asset to our branch over the years (inappropriate jokes and

On the 18th of April we had a Birthday / Leaving party for our President Chris. We all met at the office and chatted for a bit, then headed to Burger King for lunch.

After lunch we went out to Tahuanui to the go kart track to have a bit of a race with each other, it was awesome, lots of crashing and a top speed of 37.9 kph, of course our master go cart driver Jolene came in first and didn’t crash at all, she did a total of 37 laps, Chris came in second with a best lap time of 22.55 seconds, in third place was my brother Hayden, it was his first CanTeen activity, he had a best time of 22.91 seconds, everyone had a ball and it was a day to remember. After the racing we had a drink and a piece of cake, then it was time to head home. It was an awesome day and a Huge thanks goes out to the people who run the go kart track for letting us race for free.

I would also like to thank Chris for being such an awesome President for Nelson Marlborough branch of CanTeen.

Cheers Jaye

fAreWell ChrisHey guys! Well I guess this is my final farewell to you all. It’s been an awesome few years being involved with CanTeen and being the president of Nelson/ Marlborough. The adventures have been amazing and the people even better. I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m going to miss all the friends I have made in CanTeen but I am planning to come back in a year or so and apply to be

a volunteer if they will have me back. I think this is a very special organization made up of very special people, members and staff included. I hope you all get what I have out of CanTeen and for those of you who are coming up to retirement age, enjoy what time you have left! For those of you who will still be around I look forward to hopefully coming back and seeing you all soon.

Catch ya later guys!!

r.e.A.l.One word to sum up R.E.A.L!!! AwesomeOn the 27th of March I flew to Christchurch for my first national CanTeen event R.E.A.L, it was awesome, from getting to know other CanTeeners from all around NZ to having awesome workshops run by David Garb, I met some really amazing people who I will never forget. We did all sorts of stuff like, going swimming, jumping on the tramps, screaming on the rope swing, playing sing star and billiards lol. It was an awesome experience, I learnt a lot about myself and made some awesome new friends, we had a fair bit of random stuff happen, like Jarnia’s rental car getting crashed into by the shuttle on the way to the airport, and some sore experiences on the billiards table.

Also Anna and I did a talk about CanTeen to the Villa Maria Choir group who were staying at Living Springs as well, they were awesome, really appreciative and attentive. I finished off our talk with a Himene (He Honore) and the choir replied with a Waiata named Ka Waiata Ki a Maria, when we left the hall Nags and Angela were outside the door waiting like proud parents to congratulate us on our talk, it was awesome.

I would just like to say a HUGE thank you to David Garb for all the things he taught us and also to all the CanTeen staff for being there and making the weekend as awesome as it was.

Chur Jaye (CanTeen Nelson Marlborough)

Hoff impressions aside) and will be very missed..sob!

On a cheerier note we have been pleased as a branch to welcome new members, Louise (lovely Lulu) Howes, Gabriel (Gabe Gabatron) Marshall, Jake (The Muss) Puklowski and most recently the awesome Hayden (Mullet Lovin) Macgregor!

LET’S CONTINUE TO….. ROCK ON MARLBOROUGH STYLE!!

reAl CoMMentsJessica: Awesome, fantastic, brilliant, adventurous, new life skills, fabulous people, beautiful one team, I love everyone.

Kathryn: I had a really good time and got heaps out of it about myself. Really enjoyed meeting new people and the choir girls were amazing.

Anna: from Manawatu; Jesse, Jessica,Kathryn, Anna and Bevan Junior went to REAL

(rejuvenation empowerment awareness letting go) in Christchurch. This was my first REAL as a TeenLinker and it was so different from the last REAL I went to. I still learnt so much about myself but also learnt heaps about others too. I think a lot of what REAL is about is letting go of the barriers in your life that stop us from living amazing lives. Myself and another member called Jaye did a talk to Villa Maria choir group that were staying at Living Springs the same time as us. Not only were their voices AMAZING but the amount of respect, maturity, interest,

understanding and compassion they had just blew us all away! They asked sooo many questions that we could have been up all night! They are going to continue support for CanTeen because they know more about it now. it was a fantastic weekend and thank you to everyone who helped organize it, Villa Maria are an awesome example of how we can get the community behind us to keep CanTeen running, so don't forget to support our current sponsors but also encourage new ones!

WAnGAnui outinGSunday the 17th of May Palmy CanTeeners went up to Wanganui to have some fun – only we got a blowout soon after we got out of Palmy LOL! Cheers to Jonathan for his tyre changing skillz to get the Palmy people back on the road. Up at Wanganui we all went out for Burger King and played Scattergories – Cheers to Jess and Hanna for MCing that! Then we went to Kowhai park to play on the swings and spin round and round and round on the carousel as well as a game of tag or two. It went really well.

It was awesome, was my first flat tyre. Burger King was nice; luckily I kept it down on the carousel. Caitlin

Burger King was yum. Josh

Chris’CoMMentPatients in palmy hospital are getting better connected with CanTeen through working closely with the new AYA service; Jenny and Stacy. They have more access to resources and we hope to increase this further. They are organizing a get together to ask about patient needs from a CanTeeners perspective.

It was awesome! Seeing old

friends and making new ones! I

really liked painting a plate (or

teenlinkHi, my name is Heyden and my goal this year is to become a TeenLinker, to achieve this goal I have to attend two TeenLink weekends down in Christchurch and do at least 10 hours of hospital placements. I am a part of CanTeen Wellington, so I’m going to give you a quick rundown of how we do things here.

Well one of the purposes of TeenLink is to provide support for members in hospital receiving treatment. What we do is go in and introduce ourselves to patient members in hospital or we go on home visits so that we can get to know them. Then from that point onwards we regularly go and check up on the patients and see how they are. If there is anything that we can do, for example get them some movies, or maybe some games, or if they’re feeling hungry we can go get them some food like chocolate and lollies. But we mainly just go in there to chat and socialise with them, hospitals can be a very lonely place, we try our best to make it better for them.

Also in Wellington we hold a movie night once a month at the hospital, this is a good chance for patients to meet other patients and other CanTeen members in a nice and relaxed environment.

poliCe vs fire fiGht niGhtOn the 2nd of May the Upper Hutt Police and Upper Hutt Firefighters held a boxing extravaganza to raise money for six different charities – and CanTeen Wellington was one of them. It was a fun filled night with Brendan Pongia as the MC and lots of spot prizes and a little bit of blood flying every now and then. A big thanks to our trusty volunteers who helped out on the night – Anna and Zander who helped supervise the corporate tables, Vinh who helped organise the boxers, Mata and his security friends for being the ‘muscle’ and Alma, Becs and friends for selling heaps of drinks. So a big thanks to the Upper Hutt community for supporting the event and making it a success.

Joint ACtivityNot that it’s a bad place or anything but I have just never had a good reason to travel two hours to “student city”, better known as Palmerston North until one cloudy Saturday. This was the inaugural central division joint activity, combining all

the branches from various cities in the central north island. Some residents say it was the biggest thing to happen to little old Palmy since Frankie Stevens performed during New Years at the city square back in 06.

Things got off slowly but surely, thanks to us Wellingtonians getting our highways mixed up however eventually we arrived and got started on the classic scavenger hunt. I thought this was going to be the highlight of the day (maybe I had become slightly more pessimistic as our extended drive dragged on?) however I was proven wrong, this was only the appetiser. We still had six hours of action packed fun to go.

WellinGton younG CoMMunity leAders AWArds 12 May 2009“Anna and Shannon's day at the Surf Club!”Many months ago CanTeen Wellington received some information about a young leader’s award here in Wellington. The committee decided to nominate us and we didn’t think much further. About a month later we had to write a few hundred words about how we were young leaders in the community and lucky for us we made the short list of 25 people (from an original 60)! Go us! This meant that we were invited to a leadership conference day at the Lyall Bay surf club. We started the morning off with a lovely tour of Titahi Bay at the opposite end of Wellington “Thanks Shannon!” We had Nicole the manager of Fat Freddie’s Drop come and hang out and speak and Danyon Loader came along to share his wisdom and the highs and lows of Olympics, swimming, media and life! It was great to meet other young leaders throughout the day and at 6pm we put our best gears on for the award ceremony. The Honourable Anand Satyanand, Governor-General of New Zealand and Lady Satyanand were presenting the 5 winners awards of $1000 each. Many other government ministers were involved too. Although neither Shannon nor I came away with an award we had an enjoyable day, learnt a lot about other community organisations and started networking for CanTeen.

Thanks to everyone who nominated Shannon and myself, it was a great experience!

pAintbAllinG April 09

On Sunday the 19th of April a group of

Wellington CanTeeners engaged the age

old game of warfare. It turned out to be

mainly guy CanTeeners with one girl (who

technically lives in Hamilton now) and

Penny, our trusty MSM, who reluctantly

agreed to join in to make up even

numbers (the fact she would get to shoot

paint at many a cheeky Member had

nothing to do with it). We got suited up

in the traditional overalls and protective

face masks and then were handed the

gun, filled with paintballs. After a good

safety briefing we kicked off with the first

game which was “capture the flag”. Each

team had a base and a flag to protect and

if you carefully made your way through

the scrubs, trees and gorse bushes you

could try and take the other teams flag

while trying to avoid getting shot. We

finished up with a BBQ (thanks Hamish!!)

and some much needed refreshment.

Until next time – peace talks continue.

After navigating through the city we arrived at Palmerston North’s newest events complex- it was a one stop shop of fun. Initially we had a choice, high ropes or paint-a-plate. I chose paint-a-plate. I was the only one however that didn’t put me off, rather I think it inspired others to join. Not only did we get our creative minds working, we also got to keep our art master-pieces. As a matter of fact, my designer one-of-a-kind mug is sitting next me as a souvenir and reminder of what a great time I had. It also gets better. The complex included a bowling alley AND a mini-golf course!

Time flew-by, conversations got weirder. Apparently according to some CanTeeners I look like some dude off the Twilight movie. Unfortunately it wasn’t the lead actor Robert Pattinson (guts). None-the-less I enjoyed the extravagant dinner consisting of pizza (which I ate) and salad (which I ate little of…I hope my mum doesn’t see this) and before I knew it, it was home time. Old bonds were rekindled, new bonds were hesitantly separated and we drove off into the night, back to our homes.

pAMper eveninG At the body shop On May the 14th we went to the Body Shop with a friend for some pampering. Personally I didn’t know what to expect

as pampering time doesn’t occur very often on my list of things to do. So my sister and I went. She was naturally quite

happy about the idea and I didn’t know what to expect. Upon arrival we were whisked away to gather the nibbles

which consisted of many fancy sandwiches, savoury pies, prawns and even fancy salami wrapped in pastry. By the

time this was done everyone was there, there was a great turn out with quite a few

people which was cool!!! We all wandered around the shop, people trialled make

up and all sorts of smelly things. There was even a part where we could have a

hand massage and a male section. So while people beautified themselves, I got to

take loads of pictures with the CanTeen camera. It was all good fun socializing and

applying all sorts of things, yet the best was to come in the end we all got our very

own gift, CanTeen’s shout. So we all walked away very happy. (Now my sister even

smells like coconut thanks to her product)

JuMpstArt 2009Hi to all, well where to start? I’m still lost for words after getting the opportunity to jump from a Hercules. It has to have been the best thrill I’ve ever had. A very big rush! I’d just like to say thanks to a great CanTeen crew, Jumpstart and my Tandem Master & Camera man. If it wasn’t for you guys I would of never built up the courage to jump.

hi AllWell, it’s been a really busy time and we’ve had a huge amount of fun lately including ......

* An awesome time at WOMAD (oh - did I say we went to WOMAD?!)

* Met the Hurricanes players recently - We love our local boys - Andrew Hore, Jason Eaton & Conrad Smith - Olivia got her CanTeen shirt signed by all three.

* Lauree & Olivia met with Lisa Tamati who is going to run the length of New Zealand to raise huge dollars for CanTeen after the Bandanna Challenge. Pssst ... have a look at her cool Bandanna design!

* Olivia was Living Life at REAL.

* We went to Palmy to catch up with our mates from Hawkes Bay, Manawatu & Wellington in the great Central get together

* And we had a brilliant time with a sausage sizzle where David Pearce came down and hung out with us. David was owning it with his CanTeen shirt on too. (we covered him in stickers) Check out our prize sausage!

* We still can’t get over meeting Marty Casey either so thought we’d go there again.

* Olivia & Lauree flew down to Welliwood for Leaders Weekend and had a great time and some of us ‘found’ ourselves at CanTeen.

We’ve had some great helpers come on board and lend so many hands - thanks to Jenny Henderson & Jeff Sutton and as always Baz & Vanessa for the awesome job you do as VIV’s - Very Important Volunteers.

Major thanks also to Dick Smith Electronics who have given us 7 MP3 players for our home and hospital packs. Props guys! And great big

thanks to Manchester Unity and Lions of Kaponga for your awesome donations. Your donations will be going towards our Rest & Relaxation Camp in June.

Well heaps on and heaps coming up so till next mag people - Live Life, Keep it Real, Respect, Own It, Do It Right and like Taranaki does - Own It!

See ya at the next event xxoo

niGht on the toWnIt was Saturday the 9th May and the

Waikato branch CanTeeners headed

down to the local bowling alley and

mega zone (laser tag). We started it

off with a nice friendly game of ten

pin bowling where everyone made a

stunning effort! After that cruised next

door for laser tag Boy’s against Girl’s

“oh yea” and of course no suprises

here boys came out on top with a solid

victory. Then at about 4:30 went down

to Waikato stadium to sell programs

for the Chiefs vs Hurricanes rugby

game. After a few hours of fundraising

we went up to the stands to watch an

exciting game of rugby but of course

the best team came out on top(the

Chiefs) with a 16-8 win over the Canes

(Hamish you still owe Luke 50 bucks for

the win).

So thanks heaps to all involved in

organising this fun event, thanks to all

CanTeeners who came along and of

course thanks to the boys (Chiefs) who

showed the Canes who’s boss.

WoW! WhAt An AMAzinG feW Months the WAikAto brAnCh hAve hAd!Summer camp was a definate highlight! After a day and a half of rain in Papamoa, cabin fever got hold of most members – and staff - and some decided that they would rather face the grey weather outside for a swim than to stay at the hostel for another minute. And face the fury of mother nature they did! After all, outrunning a mini tornado and a hail storm is unheard of! The beach definitely didn’t offer much protection. All survived and as the brave told us their story, I for one was glad to have stayed in. Nothing hurts like hail.

Nick’s car certainly made for some good entertainment as well. Laughing uncontrollably while watching some of the boys trying to push start it up and down a very big hill. Up and down,up and down. Josh finally took over after what felt like an hour of laughter and SUCCESS! Best of all – we have it on video. Nothing like home made movies.

Sunshine at last on Sunday and all was saved.

Thanks for a great weekend everyone!

rotoruA April ACtivity The last Rotorua CanTeen outing was my first. We went to the Wall, and then to the movies.

We went climbing and some members had races up the walls and it turned into a funny competition. BEX and DEX were ever so slightly competitive but I think it was fair to say Dex bet Bex (just so no egos were altered)

After the climbing we all went to the basement cinemas, which is also part of the Wall. We watched the movie slumdog millionare. It was a real fun time and a great experience as a first time member.

Kimberly McMillan

rotoruA MAy ACtivityThe weather turned to custard so the best solution was to do what CanTeeners do best –EAT. We headed down to Burger King for an extremely healthy feed. What a turnout – We need to eat more often. A good Rotorua crowd of 13 including two new members – welcome Michael and Daniel! After we filled our tummies we thought a game of pool was in order so went across the road to breakers for a couple of friendly games. Was awesome to see so many people and the President to join in with us.

CheCk out our neW piMped out vAn! Thanks to the generosity of The Rotary Club of Tauranga Te Papa we received a grant to purchase a vehicle for our

Division. As you can see from the photo the mint vehicle does not stop at the fabulous colour or the body kit. The seats rotate to have CanTeen parties (controlled) on board, arm rests, drink holders and more. More importantly this will eleviate parents and members having to transport themselves to activities. We have already used this vehicle for our last outing and it was fantastic. Te Papa Rotary and the Port of Tauranga held a Charity Sailing Regatta on March 3rd in which we were the major beneficiaries. Thankyou to the wonderful committee especially Ward Reid and thankyou for considering CanTeen to be such a deserving Charity. A special thankyou also to Reece, Janet and Murray Paterson for all their support and assistance.

BEX

Art WorkshopArt Workshop. Well the first day was just everybody coming together-we were taught some pretty awesome martial arts moves-shot Mata!!! After that it was relaxation time and dinner. <Hell Pizza=].

Morning was a ‘swim time’ for those energetic enough to get up, the others stayed in bed. Days were full of painting, listening to our teachers about painting…and more painting. We/I learnt quite a lot from our teachers! Afternoon was usually the time for games of pool…and-of course the millions of episodes that we watched of Family Guy. On one of the nights we watched Jumper and Twilight. The next night we went to LONE STAR- it was Madagascar ll-only the determined stayed through to the end of that!

On the last day we were all pretty happy about would we had achieved-all our pieces looked great-but a little bit sad to be leaving. We all ‘split’ at the airport, where people chatted a while before they left. Good memories from those 3 days…

tAurAnGA April ACtivityMonthly activities in the Bay Of Plenty are always fun especially the classic of Tenpin Bowling. This April activity had it all, hot food, cold drinks, and competitive bowling. Its always great to see members having a good time laughing and trying to put other members off. CLASSIC!!! As I was the one putting most people off their bowling technique. I’m glad the CanTeen spirit of Live Life came through with none getting offended by my winning tactics!

Shane

tAurAnGA MAy ACtivityAlthough it never rains or gets cold in Tauranga – we have some of the best hot pools in the country, so what better way to

unwind after a hard day at work or school than to chill among friends at Fernland Spa for our monthly activity. This treat was followed by dinner at Abrakedabra – say that ten times fast. We created an idea for a new energy drink – WATCH THIS SPACE, there will be a few millionaire CanTeeners!

page 12

Page 13: Autumn 2009

The 20th of April was a big day for some, man

it was a laugh and even a greater experience. Nine CanTeeners, Ankia and Bex all arrived at the CanTeen office in Hamilton ready for a day full of fun. Values training was first on the agenda from 9:30-1:00, then it was off to Daytona indoor go-cart racing for some non-stop, fast paced action. I never finish in the number one position but I don’t mind, to me it’s all about the fun, hanging out with friends and the adrenalin feeling you can only get from car racing. And as I always say a little cheating never hurts anyone, not that I do often but sometimes it helps you to get out of that last place spot. Thanks Canteen It was awesome, see you next time at the race-way.

Aodhan

aucklandfishinG CoMpetition 09Once again thanks to Paul and Cath Gapes, the Annual Auckland fishing trip was undertaken. This year however the weather

was better and we managed to actually catch some fish!! Geoff Thomas and Ali Williams showed up to hand out the prizes and dragged along Graham Henry to help out. Our thanks go out to everyone who generously donated their time, prizes and boats to make this a wonderful day for all the members who attended.

The Kristin Fashion ShowAs always the wonderful students at Kristin School put on a magnificent extravaganza of dance and fashion to raise money for CanTeen. We were lucky enough to get invited to the dress rehearsal again, which is always just as magnificent as the actual night. Ayla Blake from the Auckland Committee went along and spoke to the audience about what it is we do.

Ainley Fun RunSunday 8th of March. It’s early for a Sunday. It’s early for any day of the week, but really early for a Sunday. And yet the Ainley’s – triplets Alison, Emma and Sally for those who have not met them, managed to entice 120 people to Craig Avon Park in New Lynn for their inaugural fun run. With generous donations from local sponsors, including Mitre10, the local McDonald’s and Smith’s Sports, a fab morning was had by all. After paying for the portaloo’s and other costs these three members with help from their mum and friends managed to raise $2200 for the branch. Planning is already well underway for next year so if you are planning to be in Auckland next March you better start training now!

Auckland/Northland Summer CampThis years Auckland/Northland summer camp was held in the beautiful Bay of Islands this year. We had kayaking, a trip to the Waitangi Treaty grounds, lunch at the RSA in Russell, and great fun chasing the dolphins, with guitar hero and singstar to while away the evenings. As always many new friendships were forged and old ones rekindled.

Relaxation 09May 15th to 17th saw the Auckland Northland division head back to Rotorua for another Relaxation weekend with 26 Patient members. Once again we stayed at the luxurious Silver Fern Lodge. We would particularly like to thank Allan from Lone Star in Rotorua for the fantastic service they gave us and the staff at Te Puea for all of their help.

CanTeen Auckland had a sausage sizzle at the opening of the new Pak N Save on Wairau Road.

A big thank you to members Ayla Blake, Terry Kim, Guy Alexander, Beth Yeung & Rachel Kerr who gave time out of your Sunday and helped us out.

Also a huge thank you to Foodstuffs staff Emma Wooster, Liz Vehikite, David Pollard, Andre and Sherry Vos who were there for the whole day without your support I don’t think the whole day would have been possible. You are all awesome and most welcome to join us for future sausage sizzles.

I would also like to thank Quintin Proctor for having us and Hamish Mackie for running around the store and donating items for the sausage sizzle. The whole day was a huge success and we raised $1,496.10 for Canteen which is fantastic!!!

hey All,I’m Guy from the Northland/Auckland division. I’m your local rep on the National Board & Member Advisory Committee (MAC).

Originally from Whangarei, I moved to Auckland in 2007 for uni, Now I’m working for an IT Company full time in sales.

The 25th of April 2009, ANZAC day, a day to remember, and man was it ever! On this day Hawkes Bay members travelled to Palmerston North where they met up with familiar faces from Taranaki, Wellington and Manawatu branches, for the first ever Joint activity! The day was started with a very traditional game of Huggy Bear and then of course a scavenger hunt. Once completed, we all piled back into the van and we were off to Leisure Plex.

Once at Leisure Plex we were to choose two activities out of high ropes, ten pin bowling, paint-a-plate or minigolf.

I had an absolutely fantastic time! And I certainly hope that Joint Activities become a regular happening. Thank-you very much to everyone who helped organise the day.

repCo/CAnteen ChArity AuCtion What a wonderful event, a warehouse full of keen car tradesmen/women, with an auction of stuff with all the proceeds going to CanTeen Hawkes Bay! Yay! Starting off with some wonderful food cooked by Raymond from

Peak House Restaurant on the BBQ, with all the money from that also coming to CanTeen. We then moved

inside and on stage, where Sean (of course) would say his few (many) words about CanTeen and his cancer journey. Now the auctioning begun with Simon Tremain auctioning items – thanks Simon. Many goodies sold for such cheap prices! Sean, I’m sure, was keen on a few of the items that were sold. A beer fridge full of beer, t-shirts, tickets to car rally's and much much more. $6,000 was raised. Thanks to Richard and Donna from Repco for organising such a great event and in such a short space of time. Cheers.

Josh

Hi, there was a great set of activities on 15th of February. White water rafting and blackberry picking were the activities. Blackberry picking was a lot of hard work and its was the first thing we did. It was hard because there wasn’t a lot in season. Kevin from Soulsport wanted to make jam out of them…

The second activity was the white water rafting down the Mohaka River, taken kindly by Soulsport. They gave us their time, the gear to use and their guides.

There were lots of splashes and everyone got wet. Members were pulled out of the kayaks and ‘taken’ for a swim. We also took inflatable kayaks to go river surfing and that was the best! This consisted of a guide and member jumping into an inflatable kayak and paddling into white water rapids, while the front of the kayak filled with water – not for the fainthearted! Everyone had heaps of fun and thanks heaps to Soulsport.

hi Guys CanTeen Hawke’s Bay has had an awesome last few months, we’ve been catching up with long distance friends, shooting each other and flying through the clouds. We have also had some pretty amazing volunteers and CanTeen HB Friends organising some awesome fundraisers. Richard from Repco organised an Auction with his customers and suppliers that raised over $5000 dollars and Rachael of Sparta has organised another tour de France race stationery cycle ride at Mitre 10 Mega in Napier which we did last year that was very successful. All this effort allows us to continue to provide all the awesome activities that we do, so thanks to everyone who helps make life a lot easier and exciting.

In June we will farewell Ruta, one of our local committee members as she turns 25. We are all sad to see her leave but I’m sure she will go on to do bigger and better things. Ruta has always been a very helpful committee member, helping out whenever she can and showing her maturity and unique skills whenever possible. One of our quietest members, it was really cool to see her facilitate one of our committee meetings. She will be sadly missed.

We now have a really cool CanTeen Office in HB, in Ahuriri Napier. It is really central and we have a very cool new leather lounge suite thanks to another CanTeen HB friend BigSave. Now Anita should work 10 times more efficiently as there is a coffee machine right next to her office. We are a little concerned though, that Anita and our fellow volunteers (not the president because he’s an Angel) are addicted to partying as the office is right in the middle of the Napier’s pubs, clubs and night life. I will have to keep an eye on this.

Anyway we have got some awesome camps and activities coming up in the next few weeks so I look forward to catching up.

See You Later
