2013 Hyundai Genesis: Luxury Sedan under $40,000

Hy u n d a i ’s i n t ro d u c -tion of Genesis in 2009 sig-naled a move from econo-box to mainstream and then some. The creation of Gen-esis proved that Hyundai could still do economy well, and could now also do lux-ury while keeping its badge priced well below compara-ble cars from other manufac-turers.

Since that initial foray into luxury, Hyundai has also added muscle, and as Genesis nears the end of its first gen-eration, it is an elegant sedan with smooth and elegant ar-chitecture, bold, performing acceleration, refined leath-er-trimmed interior, good fuel economy, and excellent safety features, while priced $10,000 under what some other lines would charge for similar appearance and capa-bilities.

Genesis was refreshed last year with a revised grill, more aggressive front fascia with larger intake openings, LED headlamp accents, new tail lights and wheel design. Other visible improvements included dark chrome head-lamp inserts, sportier rocker panel design, folding mir-rors with integrated puddle lamps, brushed aluminum finish window

surround, and a redesigned rear fascia with integrated dual asymmetrical exhaust tips. This year, Genesis has dropped its middle-sized 4.6-liter V-8, offering only the 5.0-liter direct- injected Tau V-8 engine on the 5.0 R-Spec model and an efficient and powerful 3.8-liter V-6 for other models.

eurostyled architectureGenesis is built with high

tensile steel unibody con-struction, and shows a rounded European symme-try. My test Genesis sedan was covered in rich, Black Noir Pearl body paint, mat-ed to a Jet Black interior and measured 196.3 inches in length, 74.4 inches in width and 58.1 inches in height on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, weigh-ing in at 3889 lbs...

The models past were pow-ered by 3.3-liter and 3.6-liter V-6 engines and then moved on to a 4.6-liter V-8 and last year’s 5.0-liter direct injec-tion V-8 engine. This year, the 3.8-liter V-6 engine is the best deal for price with better fuel economy and good pop, though noticeably slower than what you’d experience with the larger powerplant.

333 horsesThe gasoline direct injec-

tion 3.8-liter V-6 is quiet and strong, with 333 hp and 291 lbs-ft of torque. The system performed well at the track and on the highway with a zero-to-60 mph

sprint taking 6.4 seconds, nearly a second-and-a-half slower than my tests last year with the 5.0-liter. Quar-ter-mile times finished up in 14.7 seconds, again, nearly 1.5 slower than with the Spec 5.0.

My 3.8 liter was EPA rated at 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the Interstate, about 2mpg better than what you’d get with the larger engine. My weeklong tests yielded a mixed-use average of 21.6 mpg.

Performance was brawny and confident, and accelera-tion at speed is athletic. Its quiet engine delivers on de-mand and passes effortless-ly with little hesitation. The engine-rpm-sensing, pow-er-assisted rack and pinion power steering improves with speed and is forceful at low speeds and in auto-cross sit-uation. Genesis remains bal-anced during most trials and most speeds, but can float a bit during severe turning or in high-speed maneuvers.

T h e I n d e p e n d e n t 5 -link front suspension with SACHS ASD gas shock ab-sorbers, coil springs and a 25-mm stabilizer bar and the same set-up in the rear, with an 18-mm stabilizer bar, offer good road-feel and smooth out most macadam inconsis-tencies.

elegant interiorInside, the cabin is roomy

with 40.4 inches of front head room, 37.7 inches in row two; 44.3 inches of first-row legroom and 38.6 inches for rear seat passengers and shoulder room of 58.3 and 57.9.

The interior is filled with luxury, refinement and user-friendliness, from its simu-lated wood trim on the center console, leather and simu-lated wood trim on dash and doors to its adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors. Also in-cluded inside are interior air filtration, dual-zone climate controls for driver and pas-senger, memorized settings for two drivers, trip comput-er, audio and cruise controls on steering, 17 total speak-ers, 528-watt stereo output, AM/FM in-dash 6 CD/DVD with CD MP3 Playback ste-reo, Bluetooth wireless data link for hands-free phone and real time traffic.

help both prevent ac-cidents and max-

well being of its occupants in the event of a collision. Standard on Genesis are Electronic Stability Control, eight airbags and electronic active head restraints. The active front head restraints have been proven by the In-surance Institute for High-way Safety to help prevent whiplash.

The 2013 Genesis 3.8 starts at $34,200, and the Gen-esis R-Spec is base priced at $46,800, The Premi-um Package added $4,800 for power tilt-and-slide sunroof, tailored leather-wrapped dash and door trim inserts, integrated memory system, power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, power rear sunshade, Lexicon 14-speaker Surround Sound au-dio system, DVD navigation system with 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen dis-

play, rearview camera, power folding mirrors and 18-inch Hyper Silver split-spoke al-loy wheels. The Technology Package was not added for $4,300, but would have in-cluded lane departure warn-ing, Blue Link, an 8-inch display, a 17-speaker audio system, smart cruise con-trol and other tech items. But loaded as it was, my test Genesis 3.8, with $895 add-ed for freight, came in with a sticker of $39,875. That’s a lot of luxury for under $40,000.

Roomy, fuel-efficient 2013 Pilot is award winner

The Honda Pilot remains the most fuel-efficient eight-passenger sport utility vehi-cle for 2013, is rated above av-erage in predicted reliability and offers a comfortable ride and versatile cargo hauling.

Built in an Alabama facto-ry, the Pilot also is a recom-mended buy of Consumer Reports and was named the Ideal Vehicle in the mid-size premium crossover SUV seg-ment this year by automotive research company AutoPa-cific of Tustin, Calif.

Despite the accolades, Honda keeps adding new standard equipment while keeping the Pilot price on par with competitors that also have three rows of seats.

For 2013, a rearview cam-era, which helps drivers bet-ter know what’s behind the vehicle, is standard on all Pilots. And drivers have a good-sized, 8-inch, standard display screen in the Pilot dashboard.

Meantime, the 2013 Pi-lot gets other new standard equipment including three-zone automatic climate con-trol and Bluetooth hands-free phone calling for Pilot occupants who have Blue-tooth-enabled phones.

Best of all, the 2013 Pi-lot has a starting retail price of $30,350 for a front-wheel drive model with 250-horse-power V-6 and automatic transmission. The lowest starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, including destination charge, for a 2013 Pilot with four-wheel drive is $31,950.

Competing SUVs include the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder,

which has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $29,495 for a two-wheel drive model with 260-horse-power V-6 and a continu-ously variable transmission (CVT). A four-wheel drive 2013 Pathfinder starts at $31,095. Note that a rearview camera is not standard on the two lowest trim levels of Pathfinder.

Meantime, the 2013 Ford Explorer has a starting retail price of $29,995 for a front-wheel drive model with 290-horsepower V-6, automatic transmission and no rearview camera. The four-wheel drive 2013 Explorer starts at $31,995.

Other competitors include the 2013 Ford Flex, which has a retail starting price of $31,795 with two-wheel drive and 285-horsepower V-6, and the 2013 Dodge Durango, which has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $30,490 with rear-wheel drive and 290-horsepower V-6.

The Durango is offered with choice of V-6 or 360-horsepower V-8, while the Explorer offers three engines, including a turbocharged four cylinder and a 365-horsepower, turbocharged V-6, and the Flex has a 365-horsepower, turbocharged V-6, too.

The Pilot has only one en-gine — a 3.5-liter, single over-head cam V-6 that rations gasoline automatically when a computer module detects that a driver doesn’t need all six cylinders powering the vehicle.

Indeed, when a driver lets up on the accelerator to coast, for example, the engine can move to three- or four-cyl-

inder mode, and the Pilot moves along just fine, with no one inside detecting that all six cylinders aren’t work-ing. Just as seamlessly, when the driver presses down on the accelerator again, all six cylinders can get working again.

The technology, which Honda calls variable cylin-der management, is one of the ways Honda maximizes fuel mileage.

As a result, the 2013 Pilot scored a top federal govern-ment fuel economy rating of 18 miles per gallon in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway.

This is for a front-wheel drive Pilot that operates with a five-speed automatic transmission that smoothly shifts gears.

In the test Pilot, neither the engine nor transmission conveyed strained or an-noying sounds. In fact, most transmission shifts were im-perceptible and the Pilot in-terior was quite quiet, save for when the V-6 responded strongly and confidently in pedal-to-the-metal driving.

Power came on smoothly and steadily in city travel and at highway speeds, with the Pilot powering along on flat terrain and moving with pur-pose up mountainous roads.

Best of all, the Pilot needs only regular gasoline.

The Pilot’s 18/25-mpg rat-ing is matched by the 2013 Flex, but the Flex only of-fers seats for up to seven. The same maximum seating is true of the newly revised, 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, which comes with a CVT and posts a 20/26-mpg rating from the government.

Still, the test Pilot, which had all-wheel drive, averaged just 17.5 mpg in travel that was 70 percent in the city.

The Pilot looks neither brutish nor plain. It’s cleanly styled outside, and the inte-rior is well-organized so any-

one can get inside, setting up a bit on the seats for good views out, and just drive.

A thoughtful touch: A commodious, covered cen-ter console storage that’s big enough for many purses and that’s positioned just below the center stack of the dash-board.

It’s also appreciated that the display screen is inset a bit under a “brow” so sun-shine doesn’t wash out the images from the rearview camera.

At 16 feet in length and 6.5 feet wide, the Pilot is nicely sized in between the compe-tition. It’s nearly 10.5 inches shorter in length than the Flex but is a tad wider than the Pathfinder.

The Pilot doesn’t feel like an extremely long vehicle when it’s driven. The turning circle is an accommodating 37.9 feet.

Second-row passengers in the Pilot have a generous 38.5 inches of legroom, while the 32.1 inches for third-row riders can be expanded if second-row seats are moved forward a bit on their tracks.

Second- and third-row

seats folded down easily in the tester, providing a maximum 87 cubic feet of cargo room, which is more cargo volume than the Pathfinder has.

All but the biggest road bumps were kept away from passengers in the tester, and the steering had a somewhat light feel.

Passengers could notice

some weight shifting from one side of the vehicle to the other on curvy mountain roads.

The Pilot has a maximum towing capacity of 4,500 pounds and earned four out of five stars in government crash tests.

Consumer Reports puts the Pilot’s predicted reliability at above average.
