All About Cars

2013 Fiat 500c: Small package delivers plentyNow that Fiat is firmly

back in the American mar-ket, thanks to its merger with the Chrysler Group, we U.S. drivers can enjoy Fiat’s cool styling and Italian personal-ity again. That has never been more evident than with the 2013 Fiat 500. Known in Ital-ian as the Cinquecento, the 500 may be small — a com-pact’s compact — but since it came back to life six years ago internationally, and three years ago in America, the 500 has been a hit with drivers here and abroad.

Assembled in Toluca, Mex-ico, the front-wheel drive mini-compact has unitized steel body construction and a transverse-mounted front engine and fits snugly into the compact arena with mini dimensions of 139.6 inch-es long, 64.1 inches wide and 59.8 inches high on a 90.6-inch wheelbase, with a ground clearance of 4.6 inches, Fiat 500c has a light curb weight of 2411 lbs. with 62 percent of the weight up front.

Marked by angular Italian styling combined with func-tionality, efficient design and innovative technology, the Fiat 500 gets up to 40 mpg highway and is base priced under $20,000.

Fully packed inside and out

On the 500c I tested, I found that inclusion is a Fiat maxim, Included in my test ride were such interior ac-couterments as remote key-less entry, leather-wrapped steering wheel, tilt steering column, air conditioning with micron, filter, speed control, remote keyless entry, power heated mirrors, rearview day / night mirror, steering wheel mounted audio controls, 6 speakers, AM/FM/CD/MP3

RadioBLUE&ME hands-free communication with USB port, steering wheel mount-ed audio controls, auxiliary audio input jack, cloth buck-et seats, driver seat memory, driver seat height adjuster, rear 50/50 split fold-down seat, chrome interior door handles, driver seat arm-rest, driver seat height ad-juster, driver seat memory, electronic vehicle informa-tion center, power door locks, power windows with front one-touch-down feature, floor carpet, front floor mats, overhead passenger assist handle, rear window de-froster, sun visors with vanity mirror and tachometer.

Fiat didn’t neglect the ex-terior as 500c comes with a “500c” badge, “Fiat 500” badge, bi-function halogen projector head lamps, high beam daytime running head lamps, tinted glass windows, bi-function halogen projec-tor head lamps, black belt molding, body-color fascias, body-color instrument pan-el insert, bright license plate brow, chrome door handles, chrome exhaust tip, Nero (Black) soft top, non-locking fuel filler cap, , windshield antenna, normal duty sus-pension, 15-inch by 6.0-inch steel wheels and 185/55 R15 all-season tires.

Performance and safety abound

Not done yet, Fiat 500 in-cludes such performance equipment as 1.4-Liter in-line-4 MultiAir Engine, 5-speed manual transmission, electric power steering, en-gine cover with Fiat badging, rear park assist and speed control.

And every 500c is outfitted with such safety and security items as advanced multistage front air bags, driver inflat-

able knee-bolster airbag, supplemental front seat-mounted side air bags, sup-plemental side-curtain front and rear air bags, rear park assist, 4-wheel anti-lock disc power brakes, electron-ic stability control, hill start assist, child seat anchor sys-tem-LATCH ready, 4-wheel anti-lock disc power brakes, 500-amp maintenance free battery, engine immobilizer, tire pressure monitoring dis-play, tire pressure monitoring sensor and tire service kit.

All the interior upgrades and safety attention is squeezed into a cabin that is cozy for two. Interior accommodations provide 38.9 inches of front headroom and a hunched 35.6 inches in the rear. Add a sunroof and you lose 1.3 inch-es in row one. Legroom is a stretched out 40.7 inches in front, but a tight 31.7 in row two and shoulder room goes 49.4 and 46.4.

The Fiat 500 gets its power from the new inline 1.4-liter liquid-cooled MultiAir engine that is manufactured in the Dundee, Mich., engine as-sembly plant with a cast-iron block, aluminum-alloy heads and an aluminum bedplate. Its sequential multi-port elec-tronic fuel injection system is rated at 101 bhp and 98 lbs.-ft. of torque. With dual three-way catalytic converters and heated oxygen sensors, and coupled with a 5-speed man-ual transmission, the set-up is EPA estimated at a city/high

way/combined rate of 31/40. My weeklong test showed an eco-friendly 36.4 mpg.

Slow but steadyOn the road and at the

track, Fiat performs as one would expect a compact to deliver. Acceleration is slow, but steady, and my test 500c managed a sluggish sprint from zero to 60 mph in 11.1 seconds, while the quarter-mile took a long 18.1 seconds to complete. However, long inclines were conquered and 500c’s responsive power rack-and-pinion steering shows only slight understeer while the compact hugged the surface with intent and its suspension smoothed out most road irregulari-ties. For those who demand more brawn, a turbo engine is available with 135 bhp and 150 lbs.-ft, of torque, for a 28/34 EPA estimate and a sub-sev-en-second sprint time with mid-15s for the quarter mile.

The basic 2013 Fiat 500 Pop starts at $16,000, and tops out with the Turbo mod-el at $19,500. The Fiat C in Pop trim starts at $19,500. In Blanco White with really trendy Ross (Red) seats, my test Fiat 500 c added cool en-tertainment with the Beats Audio 6 Premium Speak-ers package with subwoofer, for $1500. A compact spare tire was $450 and a wind-screen was $200. Destination charges of $700 made the fi-

nal sticker $21,850, but cur-rent incentives could lower that by $500.

Sharp-looking Cadillac ATS chases the BMW 3-Series By ANN M. JOB ASSociAted PreSS

The smallest and lightest-weight car from Cadillac, the ATS, is a sharp-looking, smart-handling, rear- or all-wheel drive sedan whose exterior dimensions are al-most spot on with BMW’s top-selling 3-Series sedan.

It’s no coincidence. Cadil-lac officials hope the ATS, introduced for 2013 as their new, entry-level car, pulls some would-be buyers away from the long-popular, Ger-man 3-Series.

Certainly, the ATS is fresh and different, even as BMW has introduced a new-gen-eration 3-Series.

Besides the sleek, distinc-tive exterior, the ATS gives buyers a lot to talk about, in-cluding an iPad-like, 8-inch, touch-and-display screen on models equipped with CUE, for Cadillac User Ex-perience.

The ATS has safety cred, too, with its across-the-board, five-out-of-five-stars safety rating in federal government crash testing.

In comparison, the 2013 BMW 3-Series tested earned four out of five stars for pas-senger protection in a fron-tal crash and five out of five stars in side crash testing.

Another highlight: The AT S i s c o m p e t i t i v e l y priced. Starting retail price is $33,990 for a base, rear-wheel drive, 2013 ATS; that’s $545 more than the starting retail price of $33,445 for a 2013 BMW 320i.

The ATS’ base engine — a naturally aspirated, 202 horsepower four cylinder that comes with standard six-speed automatic — com-pares with the base, 180-horsepower, twin-turbo-charged four cylinder that’s in the 2013 320i. The 320i base engine is available with a six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic automatic.

Standard equipment on both base cars includes 17-inch wheels and leather-like seat trim, but not real leather.

Another competitor in the entry luxury performance sedan category is the front-wheel drive, 2013 Audi A4 sedan, which has a starting

MSRP, including destination charge, of $33,395.

The base A4 sedan in-cludes 211-horsepower, turbocharged four cylin-der, continuously variable transmission and leather-trimmed seats.

A turbocharged four cyl-inder is among the three engine offerings of the ATS. In fact, the ATS’ 282-horse-power, turbocharged, four cylinder, with six-speed au-tomatic, provides the low-est starting retail price for an all-wheel drive ATS, at $37,795. This mid-range en-gine also is the only one that offers a six-speed manual transmission in the ATS.

The most powerful ATS engine is the 321-horse-power, direct-injection V-6 that was in the test car. Starting retail price for a V-6-powered ATS is just over $42,000.

On the outside, the ATS has a refined quality as the chiseled edges of Cadillac’s longstanding angular design have been eroded nicely.

But it doesn’t look old. The careful attention to updating

the styling while keeping the familiar Cadillac look was appreciated by many pass-ersby who asked what new Cadillac this was.

Also not overlooked was the compact size of the ATS. At 15.2 feet long, from bum-per to bumper, it’s about the same overall length as a 3-Series sedan.

The size, plus easy, vari-able assist, electric power steering, made for nimble turns in tight spots and ef-fortless entry into compact-sized parking spaces.

The ATS tester rode and handled compactly, too, on twisty mountain roads, where the firmness in the sport suspension and a fine weight balance made for a poised, planted and well-controlled car.

Note the ATS is built on a new chassis from Cadillac’s previous smallest car, the CTS. The chassis is lighter weight and on the test 3.6-liter Performance model in-cluded MacPherson-type front suspension and a multi-link rear but not Ca-dillac’s high-tech Magnetic

Ride Control.Front brakes on all ATS

models are Brembo perfor-mance units and worked great on the test car to slow and solidly stop the car, with no fade. Even the feel of the brake pedal and the com-fortably progressive brake force were impressive in this Cadillac.

Power came on strongly from the 3.6-liter, double overhead cam, direct injec-tion V-6, and engine sounds during acceleration came up

in volume and pitch perfect-ly. This is the same engine that’s in the CTS, by the way.

Shifts from the updated six-speed automatic in the ATS were noticeable but not obtrusive, and while paddle shifters were on the steering wheel, the automatic worked quick shifts easily on its own.

Torque peaks at 275 foot-pounds at a high 4,800 rpm, so acceleration isn’t as force-ful as it can be in the A4 with 211 foot-pounds coming on at a low 1,500 rpm.
