Automotive VerificationAutomotive subassemblies are often produced in very high volumes making human assembly and verification impractical. Today’s assembly lines utilize the latest in automation technology to meet throughput and ensure manufacturing quality. At the same time, automotive suppliers have to maintain flexibility in their manufacturing processes to accommodate small or large assembly changes associated with different makes and models of cars. For these demanding applications, machine vision systems are widely used to guide robots, track parts and verify every step of the evolving assembly process.
Could you use Machine Vision?
Here are some of the inspections a Teledyne DALSA IPD vision system could perform:
• Guide a robot for assembly or welding• Verify the correct orientation of a part or assembly • Count the number of welds, teeth, slots or other
such features• Read a barcode, 2D matrix code or stamped characters• Perform a critical dimensional measurement• Check for surface defects before painting• Determine the location, diameter and roundness of a hole• Verify the integrity and uniformity of an adhesive bead
or gasket• Communicate with 3rd party equipment such as robots,
PLCs, HMIs and remote storage
Machine Vision Tools • Pattern finding and presence/absence for locating
and identifying parts on an assembly• Edge corner, line, circle and line segment detection
tools to find part “features”• 2D matrix decoders and OCR readers for part
identification and tracking• Color tools to measure amount and location of
colored elements such as automotive fuses• Counting tools to determine number of parts and
indicate missing parts• Blob analysis tools for counting and dimensioning
areas of similar color or contrast on the part• Bead tool for inspecting beads of glue that attach
gaskets to automotive assemblies
• Gauging tools for accurate part measurement
