The perception has always been that driving lights need to throw light as far down the road as they can in order to be of most benefit to the driver. In order to gain this sought after distance effectively, light is concentrated and contained to a single pencil beam, as a result sacrificing the spread of light. The recent introduction of LED technology to driving lights, has brought with it, new observations. Effective Light is one such observation, and can simply be described as useful light.

A single beam of light focussed onto one spot 1km down the road may sound impressive, but in reality, theres less effective light output for the crucial 300- 400m ahead of the vehicle.

An additional spread beam is often introduced to compensate for this lack of effective light.

Driving by candlelightAt one lux (the same brightness as a single candle) at 1km, the average person would struggle to identify anything at that distance. When you consider that even a fully loaded (64 tonne) B-Double at 100kph requires 127.1m braking distance to pull up, its that immediate 300 - 400m that is most relevant for the driver. The kangaroo 1km down the road can hop away well before he is a hindrance to the driver, but the kangaroo 200m from the vehicle could easily hop onto the path of that vehicle, necessitating in the drivers quick response to a potentially fatal obstacle.

Peripheral Vision The colour spectrum of LED is closer to that of sunlight which serves to help reduce eye strain. Great Whites spread a crisp light ahead of the vehicle, enabling excellent peripheral vision, which is important to detect pedestrians and other potential hazards. Research shows that peripheral vision and detection are enhanced under white light. This white light (as opposed to more yellow light produced by halogens) allows faster peripheral detection and therefore the opportunity for a faster reaction time from the driver.

What makes LED type lighting better than conventional halogen lighting?

LED lighting has a number of significant advantages over conventional lighting. LEDs have a much longer life than halogen bulbs, the current draw is also usually very low. LED work lighting is rated in Lumens, but the old lamp to be replaced is rated in watts, is there a conversion from watts to Lumen?

There is no direct conversion from Lumen to watts in this case as Lumen is a measure of light and watts is a measure of energy dissipation or heat.

The best way to check is to look up the beam pattern for the particular LED light and check if the light output from this will meet the customers requirements.

What is a Trap or Wide Flood beam pattern?

A trapezoid or wide flood beam pattern gives a very wide light area in the immediate vicinity of the light and concentrates light at a moderate distance.

Wide Flood and Trapezoid style patterns can vary slightly. These beam patterns are used in areas to give maximum light dispersion while illuminating a concentrated area.
