Automatic Labeling Schemes in WireXpert WireXpert has a built-in customizable system for convenient and accurate Labeling of the files storing the results of testing at complex locations such as campuses with multiple buildings, floors, rooms and panels. You can configure WireXpert to automatically generate File Labels or enter them manually. Note: This feature is available from software version 4.2.7 onwards. To setup the automatic Labeling scheme, go to Test Settings and select “Label Source”. This will bring you to the “Cable Label Source” screen.

The “Cable Label Source” screen shows a list of options for generating the file names, from (top-down) manual, to simple automatic generation, and more complex automatic Labeling schemes. The current Labeling scheme is also illustrated at the bottom of the screen (in the screenshot below, “None” appears because the current option is manual input).
To use a Simple Cable Label, select “Simple Auto-Increment Labels”.

Configuring Simple Cable Label Scheme You will be first prompted to enter a Label Name. The Label Name is fixed for all the files and can be a mix of letters and symbols. For example, in the screenshot below, “A” is used as the Label Name.
Click “” when done entering the Label Name.

In the next screen, you can edit the Start/End Values, which specify the range of numbers which will be appended to the filenames, for example, 1-9999. These numbers will be used to differentiate the filenames, and can be used to represent Autotests at different times/locations. After editing, click “ok”. For the Simple Cable Labeling scheme, WireXpert automatically adds a dash “-” between the Label name and the Label number. With these specifications, the filenames will be generated as “A-1”, “A-2”, … “A-9999”.
Click the tick icon at the bottom right to confirm this as the Labeling scheme.

To check that the Labeling scheme has been properly set, at the Test Settings Page, “Label Source” should now show “Simple Labels”, and at the Label Source Page, “Current Label” should appear as “A-1”.
If Autosave is on, a “Save Result” popup will appear after an Autotest showing you the name of the autosaved file.

Modifying Labels during testing While all Labels for all files can be automatically generated according to the Labeling scheme, it is possible to make some manual adjustments. Midway in the process of testing, you may skip a range of numbers and let the numbering continue from a manually input value. In order to do this, Autosave must first be turned off. When Autosave is off, a save icon will appear at the bottom right of the screen after an Autotest. Click on the save icon.
The Edit Label Sequence page will appear, where you can manually edit the name of the current Label. “Current Label” shows the default Label for the current test result (A-5). You may edit the

default Label in terms of both the prefix and the position. Note that entering a new position will also restart the numbering of future files from the new number that you enter. For example, if we edit the position to “100”, in the next Autotest, the default Label position will become 101, as shown below. Note the Current Label appears as “A-101”.

In the Class 1 Horizontal Link page that appears, there are 4 tabs: “Floor”, “Telecom Room”, “Panel” and “Port/Position” which describe 4 variables which will appear in the file Label. The variables can be letters or numbers. Telecom Room and Panel are denoted by letters, which will be incremented according to alphabetical order, and you can change the start and end values to other letters (but not numbers). At each of the 4 tabs, you can edit the start/end values for the variables. Click “” once you are done with each variable, to proceed to the next variable. At any point, you may click the return icon (circle arrow) to quit . When you reach the last tab, Port/Position, click the tick icon to confirm all your inputs and implement the Labeling scheme.

At the Customized Hierarchical Cable Labels page, there are many options to customize the Label. First, you can specify the Label prefix (limited to two characters), which will be fixed for all the Labels. Then, there are 6 available variables: Building, Floor, Telecom Room, Rack, Panel, Port/Position. You can tick/untick the variables you want to use in the Labels. The building name can be a mix of letters and numbers, but for the other 5 variables, you have to choose between using letters or numbers to describe each variable. Note: In the screen, “1-9” does not mean the numbers are limited to 1-9, but only means that you are choosing numbers instead of letters.
For illustration, we select all 6 variables. Click “”.
