There are a few other questions

you should be prepared for. Your

answers can make or break the

deal. Be honest and positive in

your responses.

Here are some questions to expect:

Why are you selling the car?

Understand that potential buyers

ask this question because they are

looking for assurances that you’re

not selling a problem vehicle.

Maybe you’re buying a family car

or you want something sporty.

Your answer doesn’t need to be a

full story, just be direct and honest.

Was the car regularly serviced

and do you have the service

records? Knowing (and having

proof of) your vehicle’s mainte-

nance record makes your vehicle a

less risky purchase for the buyer.

What is the lowest amount you’ll

take for the car?

Where and when can I drive the

car?

Arranging the test drive is unique for

every sale. In addition, identifying a

safe meeting place, make it clear that

you expect to see the potential

buyer’s driver’s license

Selling a car can be a daunting

prospect, but by knowing what

to expect, you can avoid being

caught out by experienced negotia-

tors, time wasters or criminals.

.....Follow these steps to make sure

you’re not caught out.

Don’t let a buyer go out alone, as

they might not come back

Check if they have adequate insur-

ance cover, or you could be liable for

any accidents

Keep a close friend or relative with

you - especially if you’re selling

Always keep the keys on you when

swapping seats or getting out of the

car

Meet a potential buyer on your terms

not theirs – at a place of your choose.

For test drive, let buyers follow your

own route.

Buyers will probably be keen to hag-

gle on your asking price. You need to

be firm, without being unreasonable;

set a price beforehand and keep it in

your head during negotiations. Don’t

decline a sale over a little difference

to your lowest and their highest offer.

It may cost you more in re-listing

fees, time and hassle.

In an ideal world, you’d be paid

cash during office hours which

you’d pay- in immediately in to

your bank account, but this isn’t al-

ways possible. If you do receive cash,

try to get it handed over in a bank, so

you can pay it in immediately and the

cashier can check for fake notes.

Personal cheques and bank cheques

can cause problems. Personal

cheques can be cancelled or issued

without available funds in the ac-

count, so do not hand over the car

until the cheque is cleared

Other precautions you can take in-

clude:

Ask the bank if you can draw funds

against the cheque; asking if the

cheque has cleared can mean some

thing different

If possible, go with the buyer to the

bank to draw the cheque

Ask the buyer for ID with an address

and telephone number (landline if

possible); if they’re reluctant to give

this information, beware.

Once the deal has been sealed,

you’ll need to write a receipt

acknowledging the follow-

ing information:

The date

The amount paid

The make and model of car sold

The car’s registration

The names and addresses of buyer

and seller

Make two copies of the receipt; one

for you and one for the buyer.

Finish off by handing over any other

useful documentation such as: The

car’s handbook and service records

Any paperwork that relates to the

car’s warranty, if it still has one.

1. Do your Home work on Price

Always check the car’s market value

comparing the price with several

other similar models advertised on

Auto Search, so that will guide about

the price of different car, to avoid

being overcharged. If it’s being of-

fered at a much cheaper price, ask

yourself why. If it looks too good to

be true, it probably is.

2. Visit the seller

Never buy a car without seeing or

driving it first, preferably in daylight

when it’s easier to spot damage.

• When Viewing the car at the seller’s

home or agreed meeting point, asked

seller to confirm his address and

check the address is the same as the

one listed on the registration docu-

ment

• Check the Vehicle Identification

Number (VIN) is the same as that on

the as the one on the Vehicle docu-

ment. This number is commonly

found on the chassis, on the wind-

screen or on the floor by the driver’s

seat, never view a car in the rain, in

poor light or at night.

3. Payment

Never wire money abroad – it is often

the preferred method of a fraudulent

seller acquiring money illegally. Pay

for the vehicle when you physically

collect it from the seller.

4. Ask about the car's service his-

tory:

Check all documentation provided by

the seller, vehicle registration docu-

ment and all other documents. Check

the name of the present keeper, is the

seller the registered keeper? (if is a

private seller) if not, why are they

selling it for someone else?

Making Most of Your Test Drive

The test drive part of the viewing is

probably the simplest. While you

don't spend much time under the bon-

net (or under the car), one thing you

probably do a lot is drive. So give the

car a thorough test, but don't just

drive around the block. In other

words, put it through the pace you'd

put your own car through:

• Get on the main road and ac-

celerate. Does the car have enough

power to get you into traffic safely?

Does the transmission shift smoothly

or jerk and whine? Pay attention to

the road, engine and wind noises. Do

any of these sound wrong, or just too

loud?

• Does the car drift to the left or

right when you take your hands off

the steering wheel? Drift could mean

an alignment is needed.

• How's the ride? Find some

rough road and see how the car han-

dles it. Does it bounce you around

too much? Do you feel that you're

still in control of the car? Drive over

some bumps and dips. Does the

bouncing continue after the distur-

bance has passed? If so, new shock

absorbers or other suspension work

may be required. Excessive leaning

during sharp turns may reflect the

same problem.

• How well do the brakes

work? Are they firm or spongy? Does

the car pull to one side or the other

during hard braking (a sure sign of

trouble)? Do they squeak? Brakes are

designed to squeak when the pads

need to be replaced, and that's a

costly repair. Does the vehicle pitch

forward dramatically when you brake

hard? This, too, could reflect worn

suspension components.

• Leave the engine running for

some more checks.

General advice for buying a used car

Wherever you choose to buy,

here are some general tips on

buying a used car. Buying a

car is safe and easy, as long as you fol-

low these simple steps.

Hybrid cars are one among the

promising types of new gen-

eration cars. In the present

era, the motor vehicle industry is

going through a transition phase,

which is to meet the pace of the

growing world. Cars are now become

inevitable assistants for the travel and

it is not uncommon to have to more

than one car in a home. And, motor

vehicles are now facing the next gen-

eration problems of the conventional

cars. Moreover, many environmental

and energy utilization issues are

coming cross. Hybrid cars are devel-

oped with an intention to answer

much of these questions, and the suc-

cess of it in the road make it a

favourite choice of many.

Although any car, which has a com-

bination of two different ideas can be

called as a hybrid, but the cars, which

combine two energy sources for its

running is popularly named as hybrid

car. To be simple, the conventional

cars run on a single fuel source such

as petrol and diesel. The energy effi-

ciency of the cars was in

sufficient to meet the future needs,

in the highly energy depleting situa-

tion. The search for alternative re-

sources is intensive and one of

them, electric cars were a success,

but its limitation was the inade-

quacy for a long drive and difficulty

for frequent recharges. Hybrid cars

were a better solution since it com-

bines the benefits of both types of

cars. Now, most of the hybrid cars

use the engine that work in combi-

nation of petrol and electric motor

Hybrid cars are much appreciated

by the experts because of its energy

efficiency. As the car has two en-

ergy sources, the car will in effect,

use up only reduced energy and the

most beneficial attribute is that the

batteries in the car for electrical

transmission will be spontaneously

charged, along with the working of

the car. However, the success of the

hybrid cars among the motorists re-

lies on mainly on its performance on

the road. Despite of the great fear,

whether the new car could give out

the performance as of a conven-

tional car, hybrid car gave out ade-

quate performance, with aid of its

sophisticated technology and aerody-

namic design.

The utility of hybrid cars for the soci-

ety was proved, when Government

adopted particular measures for its

promotion. Now, as part of its pre-

ferred usage, place like UK where go

green energy vehicles such as hybrid

cars were exempted from congestion

charge payment and road tax...... Gov-

ernment was impressed with the two

important advantages such as im-

proved mileage and reduced tailpipe

emissions, which can attribute low en-

vironmental pollution and reduced

non renewable fuel consumption.

Now many companies such as Toyota,

Ford, Honda and Lexus are competing

in the market of hybrid cars with their

latest versions. Any how, a compari-

son of different models is advised be-

fore the purchase.

Hybrid cars are thus the present phase

of car industry. The advancements are

going on continuously in its fuel se-

lection and structure, to persist it to a

future car, and motorists are looking

forward to the best out of it.

This month, this column shall

try to cursorily examine some

symptoms of the “automobile

headache” And, like the common

headache in humans-the manner

of it’s manifestation-usually points

to certain causes.

These are some of the likely sce-

narios through which overheating

shows it ugly face:

• When in heavy traffic or

after extended idling.

• When driving at speed, or

on repeated heavy acceleration.

• Immediately after coming

off highway.

• At any time or erratically.

• Immediately after vehicle is

started.

The causes of overheating when

in heavy traffic or after extended

idling are: low water level in the

radiator, bad radiator cap, bad

thermostat, radiator fan not com-

ing on, failed head gasket and

when the vehicle’s water pump

impeller is corroded

Overheating when driving at

speed or on heavy acceleration:

when the radiator blocks internally

with rust, scale, silt, gel, or exter-

nally blocked with road debris.

Bad radiator cap, bad thermostat,

radiator fins corroded and falling

off, water pump impeller corroded

and lower radiator hose collaps-

ing.

Overheating just after coming off

motorway: radiator fan not coming

on (but not noticeable when the

vehicle’s cooling system is suck-

ing in wind while on high-speed

on the motorway), and bad ther-

mostat are the likely causes

When the vehicle overheats at

anytime or erratically: low coolant

level, bad radiator cap, bad ther-

mostat, electrical problem/s with

gauge temperature sender or as-

sociated wiring and radiator fan

not coming on are the likely sus-

pects.

Electrical problem with gauge

temperature sender or associated

wiring is usually the culprit of over-

heating immediately after the ve-

hicle is started.

Q: From: +2348023063910 I use

a Toyota Camry. One morning,

after warming the engine, I put the

gear to D. As I attempted to take

my foot off the brake, the engine

went off. I returned the car to P

and repeated the operation. The

same thing happened till I had to

abandon the car. Please what

could have happened to the car?

Emanuel. 0802 306 3910.

A: Run a scan first on the car, but

you can also check if you have

enough fuel in the tank because

your fuel gauge could be malfunct-

ing.

REACTIONS TO AUTOMECDICS

Symptoms and most likely causes

Maintenance Corner

Overheating, as most drivers in this part

of the world know, is a psychologically

disturbing and financially intrusive oc-

currence.

Q: From: +2348033927663 & nb

sp; I use MAZDA 626 LX. The tim-

ing belt snaps often. Within few

months the belt will cut. I have

bought many belts from different

places. My mechanics concluded

problem cannot be solved. Please

help. +2348033927663

A: If you have been buying the

correct belt, and the right installa-

tion procedure was followed, and

the pulleys and sprockets are in

good condition, then my only con-

clusion will be that you must be

having a cylinder head lubrication

problem that is making the

camshaft stiff, when the camshaft

gets stiff the belt will snap.

Q: From: Courage Favour God

bless you for the good job you are

doing. I want some clarification,

have read your article on servicing

( I & II).My car came with Mileage

of 126000KM, and the recom-

mended service period is every

7500KM does this mean I have to

wait till the millage is 133500(that

is 126000 + 7500).Please advice

A: If you have been driving your

car within Lagos, I will advise you

to do a service earlier, and since

you can’t figure out the last service

date, just do another service now

and keep a log of the service, in

an urban centre like Lagos, traffic

is very heavy, so you will have to

do your service earlier than the in-

terval specified, based on your ex-

planation, I believe 4000KM

should do.

Q: From: +2347034485248 &nb

sp; which is better automatic and

manual gears

A: Depends on your choice, if

comfort is your priority then auto-

matic is best for you, but any gear

type will do depends on your ap-

plication and the use for which the

vehicle is put to, they all have their

tradeoffs.

Q: From: +2347034485248 &nb

sp; Please can u write on d types

of engines and d level of advance-

ment in automobile engines

A: There are so many types of en-

gines and advancements in auto-

mobiles today, some are unheard

of, they range from rotary piston

free-piston, turbine diesel and so

many other engines, the advance-

ments are in areas of control and

automation of their operations, this

column as a whole is not sufficient

for this discussion.

Q: From: +2348033263213 Read-

ing your article is a delight pls do

u have a workshop ? if so where?

Thx arc okokwu

A: We do have workshops in

Lagos, one is located at the Lagos

Television Complex, Lateef

Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Lagos,

and the other one is on 10/14 Mor-

rison Crescent, Off Oregun Road,

Alausa, Lagos.

Q: From: +2348023062551 &nb

sp; Good evening, sorry 4 textin

late. I drive a 1998 passat v6.

Found some oil in d water reser-

voir. Changed d faulty part 3wks

ago. Wat might b d problem. Also

i wld like find out how much it wld

cost to change d front & back

shocks. Thx and best rgds. Imeh

A: If you have oil inside your water

reservoir, then you might have

roasted your cylinder head gasket

already. But you never mentioned

what part you have replaced? You

might have to check with your

local Volkswagen spare parts

dealers for your shock absorbers.

Q: From: +2348034706269 &nb

sp; Auto Doc, how u de. Nice job

u a doing! Please sustain d tempo.

I drive an SUV 1999 model Mer-

cedes ML320. Need to replace

Power Steering Pump. Any idea of

price & location? 08034706269

A: Check with any Mercedes parts

dealers around olodi apapa if you

are in the Lagos area, you should

find one around this area.

Those are some of public reaction

to Automedics about overheating
