Annual Report of the Livestock Commission of the state of MT, 1919, ‘20, ‘21, ‘28

Darrell Abbott and family of Lewistown, MT have decided to sell at their entire collection of Granville Stuart and Teddy Blue Abbott memorabilia. Darrell, a great grandson of Granville and grandson of Teddy Blue, is one of the most knowledgeable historians regarding the Stuart and Abbott family histories in the entire country. This is your opportunity to collect and invest in the history of Montana and the western way of life.

Granville Stuart was perhaps the most important single figure in the general development of Montana from the 1860’s to his death in 1918. He had been a prospector, miner, merchant, banker, legislator, land agent, vigilante, historian, author, promoter, gunsmith, speculator, rancher, diplomat, librarian and civic leader. It has been said, that, in the history of the American Frontier, Granville was an extraordinary historical phenomenon. He was part and parcel of practically everything important in Montana Territory and adjacent lands from the year of his arrival in Montana as a youth in 1858, until his death. He ac-complished much more than most mortals during his long life. We trust that he had much joy in living in and being part of our state’s history. He was “Mr. Montana.” E. C. (Teddy Blue) Abbott, born in 1860 in the County of Norfolk, England, was a

cowboy in the great days of the 1870’s and 1880’s. He came up the trail from Texas with longhorn herds which stocked the northern ranges. He punched cows in Montana when there wasn’t a fence in the Territory. He was married to Mary Stuart, Granville’s daughter. Regarding his father-in-law, Teddy Blue was quoted saying “Granville Stuart was the history of Montana.” Teddy Blue is the history of the cattle trail and the open range.

This auction includes Granville’s livestock brands, including the famous DHS, the scat-tered “F” brand, originally belonging to James Fergus, and Teddy Blue’s own 3 A, from his Three-Deuce Ranch. All are currently registered with the Montana Dept. of Livestock Brand Division.

A large portion of Granville Stuart’s library is also included in the auction. Many of the books are signed on the inside cover by Granville. Several books are signed and an-notated by Teddy Blue. Stuart and Abbott original family photos are also being offered.

Firearms include Granville’s own Maynard .50 caliber carbine and his own shotgun. Also included are rifles and hand guns by Winchester, Spencer, Springfield, Colt and Smith & Wesson.

Indian artifacts include Plains Indian stone artifacts, Mandan bone tools, as well as Navajo rugs.Original western art includes a Charles M. Russell pen & ink drawing, five original Will

James pen & inks, etchings by Hans Kleiber, paintings by Gordon Snidow, Barbara East, Joe Bohler, Arlene Hooker Fay, Hank Lawshe’, Les Peters and Gary Carter.

This is an absolute auction. Everything sells without reserve or minimum bid.Thank you in advance for attending and we hope you enjoy this grand collection of Montana History. Jayson & Kyle Shobe
