ASD AND ADHD

Lyn O’Brien

People with Autism (ASD) are waiting for us to enter their world. People with ASD are different but not broken. They don’t need ‘fixing’ they just need us to understand them and enter their world.

Learn about the different behaviours of people with ASD, ADHD and intellectual disabilities, teaching strategies and various lesson types to ensure optimum learning outcomes.

The session will include videos, group discussions and practical ideas, resources and teaching aids.

ASSESSING COMPETENCIES, MAKING JUDGEMENTS AND SUPPORTING LEARNING

Dawn Penney

AUSTSWIM Presenters, Assessors and Teachers are all challenged to assess competencies. In this session we will look at what ‘quality assessment’ involves, how assessment of competencies can be embedded within a supportive and inclusive teaching and learning process and explore the process of making (sometimes difficult) judgements.

CANDIDATE TRAINING – LEARNING CURVE

Alina Graham

Teachers are the backbone of our business! Get updated on what a competent AUSTSWIM Teacher looks like. Industry training, assessing and audit procedures must be spot on. Explore how to nurture and support candidates so they become competent, energetic and passionate Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety.

STROKES – TRIPLE S: SENSATIONAL SURVIVAL STROKES

Fiona Njrich

Why is it that 83% of Primary School students are learning freestyle, yet only 6.2% are learning side stroke. (Benchmarking Australian Childrens’ Swimming and Water Safety Skills: Swim School Data, RLSSA, 2018).

A discovery of practical drills for the survival strokes. Clever ideas to introduce survival strokes at the foundation level.

THE SWIM AND AQUA EXCHANGE

Lyn O’Brien & Christine Naysmith

Are aqua moves useful when teaching swimming and water safety? Does swimming and water safety relate to aqua? Gain new ideas by watching and analysing video footage, discussing implementation strategies and ways to transform classes by combining the best of both worlds. This interactive session will take learning to a whole new level.

GAMES – SKILL-BASED ACTIVITIES FOR FUN!

Marlene Stevens

Games are fun, games are exciting, but do games belong in a swimming lesson? Join in learning how to create dynamic, interactive, fun and exciting games that are skill based and linked to delivery of effective swimming and water safety lessons.

ADOLESCENT DECISION-MAKING – WHY WE NEED TO AND HOW TO STRENGTHEN IT

Dawn Penney

What role does decision-making play in swimming and water safety education and how can we embed it in teaching and learning?

Good decision-making is key to enjoying and succeeding in aquatic activities.

Many fatal and non-fatal incidents, particularly in adolescents, come down to one simple thing – poor decisions. Skills, knowledge and understanding all matter and need to be developed together to be meaningful. Let’s explore the sort of learning that can be built into lessons; teaching approaches and techniques that enable technical and decision-making skills to be developed in tandem; and ways in which you can make important learning connections.

ASSESSING AND PROGRESSING: A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO MANAGING INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM PERFORMANCE

Alina Graham

This role relevant, practical and process-based approach to assessing Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety performance in a large team environment uses meaningful strategies to maximise their continued development. The process as implemented, is supported by some tried and tested ideas on how to create the foundation of an open, safe and supportive environment where individuals want to be better and also want their teammates to succeed.

INDIGENOUS CULTURAL AWARENESS

Emily Balcombe RLSSWA

Indigenous Australian children are 3 times more likely to drown than non-indigenous children. Drowning data indicates limited water safety awareness combined with low participation levels in swimming and water safety programs are key factors why.

RLSSWA has many years’ experience working with Indigenous communities and is committed to ensuring we break down the barriers to participation to ensure no child misses out on vital Swim and Survive skills. Join us for a session to share this knowledge to help ensure your program delivery is culturally appropriate.

MISSING LINK

Michelle Young

How many leads and enquiries are you missing each year, month, week or even daily? Some of the people wanting to find out about your program are falling through the cracks into the deep dark abyss of miscommunication where they will never be seen again by your centre – but the centres around you are gaining from this. How do you make the changes required to ensure potential students are converted to swim school enrolments.

DRILLS MASTERCLASS

AUSTSWIM

Join our group of presenters, teachers, swim centre operators and national swimmers for a fast-paced session of drills. Working their way through the strokes, each presenter will share their most successful drills to assist with skill development, stroke correction and common and “not so” common faults. Drills and activities will be different to those delivered in previous Masterclasses.

WHY MINDFULNESS IN WATER EXERCISE?

Tanja Luck

Over recent years, the rise in Mindful Slow Movement Exercise (MASME) and Aquatic Body Therapies have been globally on the rise. Be updated by familiarising yourself with the variety of MASME programs that exist, such as Aquabalance™, Watsu, Water Healing Dance, Cranio sacral therapy and their many health plus pain relief benefits. Explore how mindfulness works neurologically and why slow movement exercise in water is powerful as a weekly support session for the majority of your participants, regardless of their conditions. Discuss also the contraindications and principles that lead to effective pain and stress relief work in the water. Engaging in these as an Instructor may contribute to the prevention of chronic health conditions and at the same time potentially expand your water instruction repertoire.
