    INSPIRATIONIN GREEN

This is literally a cultural land-

scape. On the Tannberg high plateau,

    situated between Lech, Warth and

Schrcken, the culture of the Walser,

who rst settled in this region around

1300 A.D., comes alive. Today, we may

follow in the footsteps of these Alpine

    pioneers like Michael and Julia.

Well over 50 Tannberg stations, which

stand out for their pretty, wooden

tailor-made benches, provide insightsinto the history and lifestyle of the

    Walser people.

    And again, this picturesque scenery!

Being so richly varied, one would

hardly assume this place is a populat-

ed ski resort in the winter: gently

    sloping hills, juicy green meadows

    with high plant diversity, wetlands

and steep rugged rocks. Here lies the

watershed between the North and the

    Black Seas. The Bregenzerach river,

which has its source in Auenfeld, be-

tween Schrcken and Lech, ows into

    Lake Constance whereas the Lech

    river ows into the Danube.

This is the ideal destination for a re-

laxed and equally relaxing hiking tour.

Also the groundhogs seem to feel

quite at home here. Julia and Michael

    are accompanied by their whistling

    sounds.

The two have already wandered past

an alpine dairy farm. Now, they are

getting hungry its time for a rustic

meal. On lake Krbersee, they ndwhat they have been looking for: a

tranquil, sunny spot and a menu with

simple yet pleasing dishes. After the

meal, they make plans for the next

days over a cup of indigenous herbal

    tea.

A befriended couple had told them

about their holidays in the nearby

    Montafon valley and the unusual

experience they had made there: the

    Gauertal AlpkulTour. On this themed

trail, hikers learn about rural life and

    changes in the cultural landscape

not only by studying sign-posts but

    also through their encounter with

    sculptures created by the Montafon

artist Roland Haas. The two had been

    thrilled by this experience:this trail

is food for thought, you should go

    there and see for yourselves!

Julia and Michael are heading back

    from lake Krbersee. Their muscles

are a bit strained; gladly, the next bus

stop is only a half hour walk away.

The bus takes them back to Lech, the

starting point of a special tour of a

few days ago, which they remember

with a smile on their faces. The GreenRing around the villages of Lech, Zrs

and Zug is associated with local folk-

    tales. Installations along the wayside

provide unusual insights, and a spec-

    ially written book combines factual

information related to the trail with

    literary ambition. Of course, culture

lover Michael had wanted to experi-

    ence this continuously developing

project on location. He plans to return

to Lech together with Julia during

the winter season - as i f they hadnt

    already been fascinated with the

Green Ring in summer. However, once

the rst snow will fall, turning the

Green Ring into the legendary White

Ring ski circuit, new and promising

    perspectives will open up.
