Dear Partners and Friends,

Welcome to the very first edition of Austria News, a publication we have

created in order to stay in touch with you. Austria News shall help you to

get to know us, our Austrian companies and what we do better. I hope

you will find it useful and enjoy reading it!

I came to Lagos four years ago after previous posts in New Delhi, Berlin

and Washington DC and my mission is to increase trade between Austria

and the 14 West and Central African countries my office is responsible

for; which are: Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Demo-

cratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Liberia, Ni-

geria, Republic of Congo, Sao Tomé and Principe, Sierra Leone and

Togo.

My team and I are dedicated to finding partners for Austrian companies

and to identify business opportunities for them in these countries. We organize trade missions and

participate in events and exhibitions but mostly we engage in business to business matchmaking. To

create and maintain a good network in the business community of “our” countries is therefore of ut-

most importance to us.

Quite often Austria is not well known among Africans. The same way that many Austrians only have a

vague idea of the diversity and the opportunities that the African continent and West and Central Africa

in particular offer. Austria is mainly perceived as a beautiful wealthy country where tourists go to ski

or visit the Vienna Opera or go on a “Sound of Music” tour in Salzburg. In some parts of West Africa we

are also known for our textiles commonly called “Austrian Lace”. Whilst we do produce beautiful laces

and love our tourists, as an export oriented nation we have a whole lot more to offer. To start with,

here is a short video clip that gives a few facts about successful Austrian products that might be sur-

prising to you: ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA - Innovations and Facts Austria Info graphic

I hope I will meet many of you during my upcoming business trips, on trade missions and at other

events! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions about Austrian business, Austrian

products or Austrian companies that you might have. We are here to assist you!

Enjoy our first Austria News!

SUSANNE WENGER’S LASTING LEGACY

This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the birth of Susanne

Wenger, an Austrian born artist who made it her life‘s work to de-

velop and preserve the Osun Grove in Oshogbo, Nigeria. 2015 also

marks 10 years since the Grove was assigned UNESCO World Her-

itage status.

The Grove is a serene untouched 75ha forest which houses over

150 outdoor sculptures by Susanne Wenger, some of which are up

to 10 meters in height.

Susanne Wenger moved to Nigeria in 1950 with her German hus-

band. She quickly engrossed herself in learning about Yoruba art, culture and history. She combined

her formal training with some of the traditional art forms she had become exposed to and mentored

a group of local artists into what later became the New Sacred Art Movement.

Over 60 years later the site is visited by thousands of tourists, art lovers and the Yoruba diaspora

each year and Austria still maintains a close cultural connection with the Grove . The Austrian Gov-

ernment plays an active role in the conservation of the site by donating funds to the Susanne Wenger

Adunni Olorisha Trust (AOT). These immense contributions were recognized when our office took a

trip to the Osun Groves in November.

AUSTRIAN IDEAS FOR TOMORROW’S CITIES

Smart City is a term now used to describe a range of holistic ap-

proaches to urban development. Aimed at making cities greener,

more efficient, more caring and more technologically advanced,

these design concepts embrace technology-based innovations as

well as economic and societal changes in urban environments.

One thing common to all these technologies is that they improve

quality of life and make our cities more intelligent and environmen-

tally friendly through smart resource management; cities are in-

creasing in size throughout the world, and their structures are growing more complex even as re-

sources become scarcer. Forecasts anticipate that some 85 per cent of the population of Europe will

be living in cities by 2050.

Austria is one of the top nations in the field of (digital) technologies for Smart Cities, thanks to its inno-

vation skills. The central plank of the Smart City road map is cooperation, both between research in-

stitutes and the city’s authorities and inhabitants and the various elements of an intelligent city. Aus-

trian companies’ achievements and reliability have earned them an unparalleled reputation for bring-

ing innovative products and services to market.

You can find out more about the range of services provided by the Austrian Smart City/Smart Technol-

ogies sector in the Smart City edition of FRESHVIEW which can be found here.

VISIT TO CLARKE ENERGY - GAS TO POWER

To learn first-hand about the success stories of distribution part-

ners of Austrian companies in our region, our Commercial Coun-

sellor Nella Hengstler and her Deputy Mr Hannes Scheiner paid

a visit to Clarke Energy Nigeria, who are representing GE Jen-

bacher gas engines in Nigeria.

Since Nigerian operations started in 1999 Clarke Energy’s instal-

lation base of engines has steadily increased to become the fast-

est growing power generation supplier in the region. The locally

based team have delivered ~300MW of electrical generation ca-

pacity to many large industrial facilities across Nigeria, who were seeking economical, reliable cap-

tive power plants.

Clarke Energy is also able to deliver multi-engine power plants for independent power producers,

and supplied one of Nigeria's first gas-fuelled IPP facilities at Akute Power for Oando. The engines

were installed across the Southern parts of Nigeria – in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Benin, Aba - and

Ajaokuta in the North. This shows the great potential for growth across Nigeria wherever there are

gas pipelines. Clarke Energy is involved with major stake-holders in the future provision of captive

power to support the re-vitalisation of power supply in the country by the new Nigerian government.

Major orders for GE Jenbacher engines and ancillary equipment are expected in 2016.

Clarke Energy recently entered the Cameroonian market with its own subsidiary and plans to ex-

pand to further countries in the region. For further information please visit the following link.

ROSENBAUER - COMING TO YOUR RESCUE SINCE 1866

A cat up a tree, an accident on the road and a house in flames

may seem like three completely unrelated incidents. Neverthe-

less, they all have one thing that ties them together, the world

famous red fire engine. Bright, bold, hard to miss, these vehi-

cles and the brave men and women who operate them have in-

spired many a boy and girl to join the fire service. However, have

you ever wondered who builds these trucks?

One of the leading players in the manufacturing of fire-service vehicles worldwide is Rosenbauer

International AG. Founded in 1866 in Linz, Austria by Johann Rosenbauer, the company was the first

Austria-wide firefighting enterprise. Today they are a global market leader, with manufacturing sites

in Austria, Germany, USA, Spain and Singapore, they produce and supply an extensive range of fire

and rescue gear, with equipment and vehicles made-to-measure.

The Rosenbauer brand’s success has not been lost on the African continent either, thanks in part to

their local distribution partners John Holt Plc in Nigeria and Christork Industries Ltd in Ghana and

also thanks to the reliability of Austrian engineering.

In conclusion, next time you call the fire service in case of emergency you can rest assured that if it

is a Rosenbauer vehicle it will work. Please find more information here.

STARLINGER WOVEN PLASTIC SACKS PRODUCTION PLANTS DOMINATE IN NIGERIA

Sacks and big bags (FIBCs) made from polypropylene tape fabric are one of the strongest and most

durable packaging options for dry bulk goods. Austrian Starlinger & Co. GmbH is the world’s only

turn-key supplier of technology for woven plastic bag production and has been delivering machinery

to Nigerian packaging producers for almost 40 years. Renowned companies such as Bagco, Dangote

Group, Fas Agro Ind. Co. Ltd, Mamuda Agro Sack and Diamond

Supersacks Limited rank among their customers. The bags en-

sure safe and durable packaging of the content and are used for

dry bulk products such as cement or gypsum, but also crops like

sugar, coffee, rice, grains, or flour.

In addition to standard sewn bags, a new segment has emerged

on the packaging market for dry bulk goods: BOPP (biaxially ori-

ented polypropylene) film laminated bags are becoming increas-

ingly popular in Nigeria. In 2015, Starlinger has supplied BOPP

lamination equipment to a number of customers who have add-

ed BOPP laminated bags to their product portfolio. Besides their

appealing look these bags help to prevent product copying and

the subsequent distribution of counterfeit products. The characteristic appearance and special pro-

duction process of BOPP coated bags make them very difficult to counterfeit, thus helping brand pro-

ducers to protect their products, and preventing consumers from spending their hard-earned money

on low-quality purchases.
