Visit To Woolsthorpe Railway Reserve Plus Look For Orchids on Saturday 29th September.

Lisette Mill <[email protected]> wrote: Hi Kevin, we could meet at the railway siding at Warrong first (cnr Gunns Rd and Warrong Siding Rd) - that's where the ecological burn was in April and where we could get members to park off the road and walk into the site helping us look for orchids etc. The SA Weed orchid is here too and we could use that timing to cut and paint the tubers or at least gps where they are. Then drive up that road stopping part way to the scar tree and again encouraging members to walk to the tree along the track stopping at places as things are found. Then walk back to cars and carry on to Woolsthorpe and back to Koroit. ED: I suggest we meet at Swan Reserve at 1.00 pm and travel out in convoy. Hopefully this way no-one will get lost….

In Loving Memory of Life Member, Coral Moore

This month we lost one of our most loved members, Coral Moore passed away at the grand age of 98 years of age. Thank you to all members who

attended the service on Monday for Coral. Coral loved her native plants and loved doing floral displays at Flower Shows, church displays and anywhere

else she could do them. She was a valued member of our group, having served on the committee for many, many years, In the early 1990’s we made her a

Life Member of our group. Thank you to Joyce Sparrow for putting together the floral display above right for the service and Mike and Liz Halls and

Friends of Swan Reserve for supplying the flowers.

Committee Notes

Propagation Of Plants:

A number of members have expressed an interest in

growing some native plants for either donation or

sale to the public specifically due to a lack of local

nurseries from where they might otherwise be

purchased. It was decided to source suitable seeds

from the APS Vic. Seed Bank and to explore our

options regarding who might also be interested in

assisting us. Kevin has reviewed the APS Vic List

from their web site and has made recommendations

as to their suitability for this purpose.

Would you like to help out in growing these plants??

It would be silly for a number of us to grow the same thing, we need to plan

who grows what so that we get a good range of species. Plants could also be

grown by cuttings.

If anyone would like to be involved with this, or would like more information:

please contact:

Michael Mattner on 5567 6477 or [email protected]

OR

Andrew Gray on [email protected]

OR

Kevin Sparrow on 55626217 or [email protected]

Where would we sell these plants?

There has been a suggestion we could hold a Flower Show or Open Garden

and sell plants there. Obviously we would need members to volunteer to open

their gardens up to the public and for members to assist on the day. It would

also take some time to grow plants large enough for sale.

Editor: It is some time now since we held a Flower Show/Open Garden so

maybe it is time to consider this again. Please let us know what you think.

We are excited to celebrate Wattle Day with the launch of two wattle

-related products. The first is WATTLE ver. 3, an interactive key to

Australian species that is available on the LucidCentral website

(at https://keys.lucidcentral.org/keys/v3/wattle). For those hoping to

identify plants in the bush, the key is now also available as an App

for smart phones and tablets, suitable for both Android and iOS plat-

forms

(see http://identic.com.au/…/wattle-acacias-of-australia-media-…/).

Both versions enable users to

identify Wattles that occur

anywhere in Australia or else-

where in the world where they

are grown. They include 1057

formally described species of

Acacia, plus several hybrids

and informal taxa of this ge-

August Display Table by Kerry Artis

Kevin Sparrow started our showing with Eremophila oppositifolia, a very pretty Eremophila

which he has grown from cutting and has a purple flower. Eremophila demsteri has very small,

dainty, white flowers, Eremophila glabra came from Marie Goods and is growing in a tub, bear-

ing a mass of flowers that start off as yellow buds that turn to a peachy colour, then to white. Ere-

mophila ‘Spitfire’ (photo upper right) is a hybrid of splendens x maculata, Diplolaena angustifolia

has a lovely, red flower and Hakea coriacea is looking good.

Mike Halls brought along the beautiful Acacia acinacea Gold Dust Wattle with its balls of fluff,

Grevillea petrophiloides ssp magnifica is looking great with its flower spikes held well above the

leaves, Eucalyptus caesia ‘Silver Princess’ is a beautiful sight with its weeping foliage and pretty

flowers and Lechenaultia biloba Blue Lechenaultia is a delightful plant with bright blue flowers

that grows to 50cm high and needs a well drained soil. Darwinia lejostyla ‘Coolamon Pink’ (photo

bottom right) is 6 feet across and looking spectacular with pretty, deep pink, bell flowers.

June Preece’s Hypocalymma angusti-

folium White Myrtle (photo left) is over

thirty years old and is just starting to

flower. It comes from Western Australia

and the sunny side of the plant has pink

flowers and the underside is white.

Hardenbergia comptoniana in the bush

form has darker blue flowers and larger

leaves than the climber, is 1m high and

1.5m wide and makes a lovely display as

does the climber which looks great when

it climbs up trees and bushes. Dryandra

formosa Showy Dryandra is 28 years old

and was a tree, some of the branches fell

down but it continued to grow. It has a

beautiful, golden flower and comes from

Western Australia.

August Display Table by Kerry Artis

Hakea purpurea is a mass of reddish purple flowers and is looking beautiful. This was shown by

Michael Mattner and comes from Queensland and New South Wales, being a very showy plant that

is hardy in most soils and full sun, often mistaken for a Grevillea. Grevillea flexuosa Zigzag

Grevillea (photo upper right) comes from Western Australia, is 2m high and has cream flowers with

a lovely perfume. Michael has three shrubs of Grevillea ‘Scarlet King’ in a row and the birds and

bees love them. They are 1.5m high and have lots of red flowers. Thryptomene calycina Grampians

Thryptomene is a beautiful, small shrub that can grow to 2m high, bearing profuse, small, white

flowers that make excellent cut flowers.

Kerry Artis showed Philotheca myoporoides, (photo lower right) a very pretty shrub which has pink

buds that turn to white, star-like flowers. It is hardy and grows in any well-drained soil in full sun or

partial shade, a variable shrub which can grow to 1.5m high. Correa ‘Isabell’ grows to 75cm high

and has lovely, baby pink, bell flowers, can be grown in full sun or shade and is frost hardy and quite

drought tolerant. Grevillea ‘Fire Cracker’ is a compact, rounded shrub that grows to 40cm and

flowers from April through to October, being hardy in most soil types with good drainage.

Andrew Gray brought a photo along of Alyogyne huegelii Lilac Hibiscus (photo below left) that

grows to 2m high and has beautiful lilac-purple flowers. It is hardy and moderately frost tolerant,

grows in most soils in a sunny position and its best if it’s pruned to maintain its shape.

Other plants on display included Eremophila

maculata in a cerise colour, Eremophila viscida x

maculata, Thryptomene saxicola, Melaleuca fulgens,

Report on Groups Visit To Peter Francis Points Reserve at Coleraine

Last month 5 members of our group, travelled to the Peter Francis Points Arbo-retum at Coleraine. We were met by President, Margaret Rutter together

with her daughter, Anna. They introduced us to Ray Clay, former curator, now a volunteer, who showed us around the reserve.

The Peter Francis Points Arboretum is a collection of native plants on 37 hectares of parkland on the edge of Coleraine. It contains a large collection of Eucalypts and many other plant genera including bank-sia, hakea and acacia.

Some of the oldest trees at the reserve are more than 50 years old having been planted back in 1966 by volunteers under a then shire-supported scheme. Today there are more than 10,000 native plants documented in their collections all still being looked after by a team of volunteers. The area is Crown Land coming under the Parks Victoria banner although they receive little funding from them.

An Open Day in May this year saw the launch of a new Information Shelter and 3 walking trails around the reserve so as to be able to view the many species of plants that are growing there. Many of the trees and shrubs are mature of course so it is a big job for the volunteers to undertake to prune/maintain or replace any of them needing refurbishment. They also published a ‘Botanical Walking Track Guide’ so that people could do a self guided tour.

Some of the interesting plants we found are Hakea baxteri, H. bucculenta, H. multilineata and a very interesting and rare H. pendens. Banksia found were B. oreophila, B. tricuspis, B. lanata and B. coccinea. Further information can be found on their web site at: http://www.thepoints.org.au/ Photo above of members with Ray Clay (Anna Rutter) and Hakea multilineata (K. Sparrow)

After 35 consecutive years of presenting the much admired and iconic Pomonal Native Flower

Show, visitors might expect the Australian Plants Society Grampians Group to have run out of

ideas. But at the 36th show on the 6th and 7th of October at the Pomonal Hall, the group is present-

ing a display of endangered ecosystems, featuring Grasslands and Rainforests. It hasn’t been done

before so it will be quite an achievement.

Commencing on Saturday the 6th from 9.00 until 5.00 and on Sunday the 7th from 9.00 until 4.00,

visitors will be able to see a fabulous display of hundreds of named native flower species and all

of these will be picked from members’ gardens. Visitors will also be able to buy loads of native

plants [many which are rare and collectable], gardening and botany books and also refreshments.

And they’ll be able to visit some excellent local native gardens for free with their flower show

entry ticket. Adding to the show, at the back of the hall will be two displays. One display,

championing Rainforests, will feature the work of Ellis Rowan, an award winning Australian

female botanical artist from the 19th century, and will provide examples of many beautiful rainfor-

est plants suitable for our gardens or pot culture.

The other display being an interactive Grasslands display presented by our members from the

‘Jallukar Native Grasslands Project’, will provide plant specimens, photographic displays and

some hands on experiences that highlight one of our most undervalued but beautiful ecosystems.

All this wonderment will cost adults only $5 and children are free.

Visitors can take the opportunity to visit the grand, picturesque and botanically significant

Grampians National Park on the same weekend.

Please contact [email protected], or [email protected], 0407700843 for

show enquiries and visit easterngrampians.com.au or ring the Halls Gap and Grampians Visitor

Information Centre on 1800 065 599 for general enquiries and follow us on Facebook at ‘APS

Coastal Connections by Jarred Obst

Hello and welcome to the July/August edition of Glenelg Hopkins CMA’s ‘Coastal Connections’ email.

Unlike much of eastern Australia, June and August delivered on the rainfall front for southwest Victoria, with our coastal region experiencing

close to, or slightly above average rainfall totals.

Seasonal Weather Consistent winter rainfall throughout July and early August resulted in many coastal wetlands and waterways bursting their banks and teeming

full of life! A recent snap of spring sunshine has however displayed an early drying trend, particularly noticeable with reduced stream flows

across our catchments and into our estuaries. While most of us crave some warm weather at this time of year, this may be a worrying trend and

does align with the Bureau of Metrologies spring forecast. This said however, some of biggest rainfall and flood events have historically oc-

curred in the spring, so fingers crossed for a productive balance of rainfall and sunshine ahead.

For a full breakdown of recent and upcoming weather conditions, please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/outlooks/#/overview/video

Estuary Update

All estuaries across our region are currently open and flowing well after consistent rainfall over the past two months. In true seasonal fashion,

estuary water profiles are dominated by highly-oxygenated freshwater, providing ideal conditions for natural flushing and resetting of these

systems prior to drier times ahead. The extent and duration of this seasonal flushing cycle appears to be hanging in the balance, and will be

highly dependent on spring rainfall patterns over the coming months.

For a summary of recent conditions, please refer to the Estuary Update & Estuary Photo attachments.

Riverbank Restoration activities Winter rainfall and a recent hint of spring sunshine continues to provide ideal conditions for native revegetation works. Here are two events

you may be interested in:

Tyrendarra Streamside Reserve

The CMA are hosting a community planting day at the Tyrendarra Streamside Reserve next Saturday the 8th of

September. This event builds on recent willow removal works and the rehabilitation of riverbanks within the Budj Bim landscape.

ing to significant Brolga and Bandicoot habitat restoration efforts. Please refer to the attached flyer for further details.

Citizen Science & Volunteering opportunities Here are some great opportunities to learn more about our regions waterways and coastal environments if interested:

Shoreline Monitoring Program using Drones Deakin University is seeking motivated citizen science volunteers and groups to be trained in the use of small aerial

drones to monitor shorelines and points of interest along our coast. This monitoring allows fast assessment of changes in the volume, height and extent of sediment and other features,

and will contribute to the sustainable management of our coastal environments over the next centuries. This is a very exciting initiative; please follow this link https://www.coastsandmarine.vic.gov.au/coastal-programs/

victorian-coastal-monitoring-program or email Dr Blake Allen on [email protected] for more details. National Waterbug Blitz

Australia’s first nationwide waterway monitoring event will commence in spring through the National Waterbug Blitz. Waterbugs are small aquatic animals that live in our waterways, and the type and number of species present can

be a fantastic indicator of waterway health. By becoming involved, you can investigate how healthy your local waterways and wetlands are, simply by exploring

and identifying what waterbugs they contain! For more information please follow this https://www.waterbugblitz.org.au/

Lastly, keep an eye out on social media and newspapers regarding an exciting new ‘Small Things Festival’ in Warrnambool on

Saturday the 20th of October. This event will take place on the Civic Green with the aim to engage Ecology and the Arts to

present and share stories of sustainable practice!!

All the best until my next instalment,

Regards

Jarred
