About the Australian Pig Veterinarians
The Australian Pig Veterinarians (APV) focus on preventative medicine, and promote to members a holistic view of
veterinary science, particularly in regards to pigs in their various environments.
Veterinarians that work with pigs make a very important and global contribution to society by ensuring adequate and safe
food is available, while still maintaining the health and welfare of pigs.
Increasingly, pig veterinarians are extending the scope and delivery of veterinary science by becoming involved in training
programs for pig producers, quality assurance programs, and establishing and managing production systems and global
disease prevention.
Pig veterinarians work in various types of private practice, government departments, universities, research institutions
and a wide range of commercial companies that produce pigs, feed, products for pig production and pharmaceuticals.
This year we are delighted to have Dr Marcelo Gottschalk joining us as our keynote speaker, from the Faculty of
Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal. Dr Gottschalk will be joined by a range of other speakers,
including Dr Stephen Page of the University of Sydney, for two full days of presentations.
So, join us at the Tradewinds Hotel in Fremantle, WA for the pig veterinary industry’s ‘must’ attend event.
The Tradewinds Hotel, situated in East Fremantle on the beautiful Swan River
is a boutique, newly renovated hotel. Just a short drive to Western Australia’s
famous beaches or the bustling streets of Fremantle, the Tradewinds is the
perfect warm and welcoming base for your trip west.
Accommodation is encouraged at the Tradewinds.

About the venue
International Speaker — Professor Marcelo Gottschalk
Professor Gottschalk has a DVM, PhD in microbiology and immunology, and
as held an academic position (full professor) at the Faculty of Veterinary
medicine at the University of Montreal since 2001. He is the director of the
North American reference laboratory for the diagnosis of Actinobacillus
pleuropneumoniae (APP, etiological agent of swine pleuropneumonia). He is
also the director of the international reference laboratory for Streptococcus
suis. He founded the Swine Infectious Diseases Research Center in Canada
and he was also the director of the Research Group of Swine Infectious
Diseases at the University of Montreal.
He has published more than 350 papers in international peer-reviewed
journals and more than 150 papers in professional journals. He is also the
author of two chapters of reference book “Diseases of
Swine” (Actinobacillosis and Streptococcus). He has been invited to speak
on more than 250 occasions in more than 35 countries and has participated
in more than 400 studies presented at different international meetings. His
activities are highly concentrated on APP, S. suis and Haemphilus parasuis.
Professor Gottschalk will be making
two key presentations on the following
diseases :
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae
Focusing on how to diagnose
(specifically chronic and subclinical
(infections), how to evaluate the risk
of introducing carrier animals, and
how to control and prevent clinical
disease. There are very good tools to
control and prevent swine
pleuropneumonia, but these must be
rationally used.
Streptococcus suis
Focusing on how to establish a good
diagnosis (S. suis as a primary or
secondary pathogen). He will also
discuss measures to control and
prevent disease and address the
controversy on the use of autogenous
vaccines. The zoonotic aspect of the
disease will also be discussed.
