Board Chair at Wannon Region Water Corporation

Jacinta Ermacora is a social worker and policy specialist who has practiced in the sexual assault and primary health sectors before moving into directorship roles. Jacinta is also a qualified Quality Improvement Performance Assessor. In October 2016 Jacinta retired after serving twelve years as a Councillor at Warrnambool City Council including two years as Mayor. Her last notice of motion prior to retirement was for Warrnambool City Council to support the ALGWA-Vic Conference in Warrnambool and for Council to develop a gender diversity strategy. As an active supporter of

governance skills in south west Victoria she is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Great South Coast Committee. Jacinta has a wide experience of public sector governance in the Great South Coast Region having served on the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority Board, and is currently Board Chair at Wannon Region Water Corporation. Jacinta has a Master of Social Science, Bachelor of Social Work and is a Graduate and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Cr Kylie Gaston was born in Adelaide and graduated from University of South Australia with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media Studies.She was elected to the Warrnambool City Council in 2012 and became mayor in 2015. Cr Gaston’s background in the communications field and extensive experience in small business has served her well during her time on Council. She recently completed a three year Diploma in Local Government and has also served as Chairperson of

Great South Coast Board, Deputy Chair of Regional Cities Victoria, Committee member for Business Professional Women South West, and a member of the Corangamite Library Corporation Board.Cr Gaston is a strong advocate for furthering educational opportunities across the region and is passionate about her city and the role she can play towards its exciting future growth.She is married to Jean-Philippe and has two daughters: Ana and Armelle.

Helen is a former Mayor and Councillor of the Nillumbik Shire Council from 2004 to 2016, and first elected as Mayor in December 2010; Helen served a second term in 2014/15. Helen has been a member of the ALGWA Executive Committee since 2008 and was elected President in April 2016. She is committed to supporting and encouraging women who are elected and work in local government and more broadly advocates for gender equality in our society. Helen was elected to the Municipal Association of Victoria Board in March 2015 and served on the Board until October 2016. She also holds a number of government and not-for-profit Board positions with the Adult Community and Further Education Board, the Ministerial

Council for Volunteers and is Deputy Chair of the State government’s recently appointed Northern Metropolitan Partnerships and is on the Board of not-for-profits, Women’s Health Victoria and Positive Aid.Helen is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has tertiary qualifications in the social sciences and community development and has worked for government Ministers and MPs and also in the volunteer sector. She supported her local community through voluntary leadership roles at the local playgroup, kindergarten, primary school and sporting clubs. Helen also helped establish the Nillumbik Women’s Network which in turn supported programs for the prevention of family violence in her community.

Parliamentary Secretary - Regional Victoria & Tourism and Major Events

Danielle Green MP was elected to represent Yan Yean in 2002. Raised in regional Victoria, Danielle has two adult sons and lives in Diamond Creek with husband Michael. Previous positions held in government include Parliamentary Secretary for Police and Emergency Services. In Opposition, Danielle held various portfolios including being Australia’s first Spokesperson for the Prevention of Family Violence. Her interests include skiing, football especially AFLW, netball and singing.

in Victoria and Danielle is a strong advocate for jobs, infrastructure and services in addition to being Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria, Tourism and Major Events.

Brigid Delaney was born in Melbourne and raised in Warrnambool - where she went to St Ann’s College - now Emmanuel College.

She studied law and returned to the western district to practise, before embarking on a journalism career in Sydney.

Brigid has worked at the Sydney Morning Herald, the London Telegraph and CNN and is currently a senior writer at Guardian Australia.

Brigid is also the author of three books - Wellmania, This Restless Life and the novel Wild Things. These days she does a lot of work as a travel writer - and can be found in all corners of the globe writing for Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveller and the Guardian.

She is also the co-founder of the Mercy Campaign - an activist group that advocated for clemency for Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Cr Raylene Carr was re-elected in October 2012 for her second term. She has lived in Vermont South for 28 years and is married with two adult children.

Cr Carr has been on the Whitehorse Manningham Regional Library Corporation board for four years, including one year as chair. As a past committee member of Vermont South Community House, Cr Carr recognises the vital contribution of volunteers. Her areas of interest include traffic management, public open spaces, libraries, childcare, and aged and disability community groups. She supports

shared bicycle off-road paths and small business initiatives.Qualifications include a Diploma of Business and being a government approved dog trainer.

Fire Recovery Coordinator (Moorabool & City of Ballarat) 2017 Bursary winner

Michelle was appointed as the Fire Recovery Coordinator for Moorabool and the City of Ballarat following on from the Scotsburn Fires in 2015 and continues manage the community recovery in partnership with the Scotsburn Community Recovery Committee to deliver capacity building programs and events to the fire affected communities. Michelle has a passion for empowering communities and individuals to reach their full potential and has recently developed the Scotsburn Community Leadership Program. Michelle has won the ALGWA

Bursary award and is currently completing her final subject of her Master of Business Administration (MBA). Prior to the Scotsburn Fires, Michelle managed the Moorabool Community Leadership Program and has spent 10 years in State and Local Government delivering community, economic and recovery development programs to Council, Business and the Community.

MICHELLE RICHARDS

Susan Alberti AC is one of Australia’s pre-eminent philanthropists, having donated millions of dollars to medical research and other charitable causes over her successful business career. Susan developed a passion for medical research when her only child, Danielle, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the 1980s. Danielle tragically died from the complications arising from the chronic disease. It was at that point Susan’s lifelong commitment to raise funds for better prevention, treatment and to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes became a dedicated mission. This has subsequently led her to focus on medical research more broadly. Susan Alberti was a finalist in the Australian of the Year Award in 1997 and again in 2009. In 1997 she received an AM (Member of the Order of Australia) for her contributions towards the cause of diabetes research. Susan was awarded an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) on January 2007. This recognised

her long and outstanding contribution to major medical research institutions, particularly as a philanthropist, fundraiser and advocate for Type1 diabetes care and research.

On Australia Day 2016, Susan was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) Award in recognition of her eminent service to the community, particularly through philanthropic and fundraising support for a range of medical research, education and to young women as a role model and mentor. Susan is Chair of the Susan Alberti Medical Research Foundation and has also held position on numerous other boards, including serving as president of the Western Bulldogs Football Club.

Gender and Sexuality Commissioner Victoria

Ro Allen is an experienced and longstanding advocate for LGBTI Victorians and has held leadership positions in the community and government sectors.Ro has been a member of three Victorian Government LGBTI ministerial advisory groups and chaired the ministerial advisory committee on LGBTI Health and Wellbeing between 2007 and 2009.As founding CEO of UnitingCare Cutting Edge, Ro established Victoria’s first rural support group for young LGBTI people, giving Ro a particular understanding of the

issues faced in rural and regional areas.Ro is a former Chair of the Adult, Community and Further Education Board, the Victorian Skills Commission, the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVIC), and former member of the Hume Regional Development Australia Committee.Ro has been recognised for extensive community service: in 2003 Ro received a Centenary Medal and in 2009 was inducted into the Victorian Government Honour Roll for Women.

Cydoni has more than 18 years of experience in the waste sector, starting her career as an education officer and then building her skills to provide executive leadership within one of the seven State Government Waste and Resource Recovery Groups. In addition to a strategic planning role, Cydoni has built strong relationships with the 9 councils within in the Barwon South West region, coordinating the development and delivery of waste and resource recovery projects, facilitating collaborative approaches to getting best value. Outside of regional planning and local

government support, she supports the community to drive initiatives and to seek local solutions to waste issues.

Over the past 5 years Tanya Lewis have been educating communities about the benefits of being better organised, both in the home and the office environment through our interactive workshops. With over 5000+ people attending her workshops and seminars, sge believes there is a need and desire for people to declutter and simplify their lives. She is on a mission to turn clutter into opportunities for

people in need, and to date her online community has diverted an estimated 31,000kg of unwanted items from landfill by working with local government and local charities. These workshops are designed to show that with a customised plan, life and business can be so much more enjoyable and productive. Participants are introduced to the 10 Rs: Rethink, Responsible, Refuse, Repurpose, Reorganise, Repair/Restyle, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Reward.

Psychologist and Founder of Sophrosyne Psychology

Sheridan is a heart-centred psychologist running her own private practice Sophrosyne Psychology in Warrnambool. Sheridan is passionate about helping her clients lead their best lives through an integration of science, whole heartedness and raised conscious awareness.Sheridan has been working as a psychologist for almost 20 years both in Australia and internationally. She has held numerous leadership roles in mental health and has a special interest in eating disorders and issues related to body image. She has provided extensive consultation to media around these issues, presented at numerous conferences and has spoken to hundreds of schools, gyms and universities.

In her late twenties Sheridan came across a game-changing quote by Thoreu: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you’ve always imagined”. This led Sheridan to explore other passions and resulted in her working as a TV presenter for the ABC and a music photographer, with her photos used in such publications as Rolling Stone Magazine. When she is not working, Sheridan loves Saturday morning dancing with her family in the kitchen, family huddles, playing old records, having friends over for a lazy Sunday lunch, running along the dunes with her dog and holding her life with gratitude and self-compassion.

Councillor Samantha McIntosh has been Mayor of Ballarat since November 2016, delivering a strategic vision for the city which facilitates job creation, attracts investment and delivers essential services and infrastructure.Cr McIntosh was first elected to Ballarat City Council in December 2008 to represent the municipality’s North Ward. Re-elected in the Central Ward in 2012 and 2016, Cr McIntosh served as Deputy Mayor in 2012.Cr McIntosh has a particular interest in promoting and protecting Ballarat’s outstanding built and social heritage. She has been at the forefront of Council’s world-leading involvement in UNESCO’s Historic Urban landscape approach to heritage management.

Ballarat’s buoyant tourism, arts and events sectors are another area of special interest for Mayor McIntosh; the city has hosted a number of marquee events during her Mayoral term, each drawing thousands of visitors and generating millions of dollars in economic impact.Mayor McIntosh plays an active role in the Prosperity portfolio of Council.Cr McIntosh has trained as a registered nurse, has owned and managed tourism hospitality and health support venues, and worked as a Ballarat real estate agent.

Cr McIntosh is married and has four adult children.

CR SAMANTHA MCINTOSH

(Mayor) Corangamite Shire council

Jo lives with her husband Daniel and sons Jordan (11) and Cooper (9) in Cobden and works in office administration one day per week at Mercy Regional College. Cr Beard was first elected to Council in 2011 and is serving her second term as Mayor after being elected by fellow Councillors in November 2015. She has always been very active in her local community particularly with the Cobden Lake Committee, Cemetery Trust and Progressing Cobden.

She loves being able to help make a difference not only in my community but also across the shire.Her family has always volunteered in the community and she has been brought up to give back wherever possible, so Council has given her that great opportunity. Cr Beard enjoys listening to others and being able to help in whatever way she can to make life better for all.

(Mayor) Southern Grampians Shire Council

Cr Mary-Ann Brown was elected to Southern Grampians Shire Council in October 2016.She moved to Dunkeld in 1988 and has 2 daughters. Cr Brown lives on a farm at Dunkeld and is the owner of a financial services business with offices in Hamilton and Casterton.

Cr Brown is heavily involved in both the Dunkeld and Southern Grampians communities, having been a board member and President of Western District Health Service,

President of the Dunkeld Progress Association, and also a volunteer at the Dunkeld Visitor Information Centre for more than 20 years. She is currently the Chairperson of the Dunkeld Community Centre Committee.Cr Brown has a Bachelor of Economics degree and a Master of Business Administration.

CR MARY-ANN BROWN

(Mayor) Mitchell Shire council

Cr Rhonda Sanderson’s journey in local government commenced in 2012 and during that term she was elected Deputy Mayor for 2013-14 and following re-election in 2016 she became Mayor for 2016-17.With a professional background, mostly in law enforcement and training, her career has been mainly in administration and management both in the government and private sector. Community service is important to Rhonda - both in her employment and voluntary work. The issues she is committed to pursuing on Council are: improved consultation and transparency; fair treatment

of all residents and ratepayers; township beautification; economic development and job creation; effective planning and development; more youth activities; a safe network of footpaths and trails; and, community infrastructure which meets local needs. As a long-term Seymour resident representing North Ward, she knows and understands that community infrastructure must meet local needs. Rhonda is a graduate of the AICD Company Directors’ Course (2015) and holds a BA (ANU 2007).

Gail Cumming currently works for the Victorian Local Governance Association as the Diversity and Communities Policy Officer. She is very familiar with the land of local government, having worked at Nillumbik and Whittlesea in community development/emergency management roles. After nearly three years in emergency management at Red Cross Gail is now back in local government territory, focused on supporting greater diversity in local representation and deeper community understanding of local governance and decision-making.

National President of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association

Cr Coral Ross was first elected to the Boroondara Council in 2002 and has been re-elected four times. She has served as mayor three times. Coral has served on the ALGWA Victoria committee since 2010, including the maximum of two consecutive terms as Victorian President.

She has also served on the National Board since 2012, and is currently serving her second term as National President. She was made a Life Member of ALGWA in

2017. She has also served as Interim President of the Municipal Association of Victoria, and was on the MAV Board for six years. In 2014 Coral was named as one of the ‘100 Women of Influence’ by the Australian Financial Review and Westpac, recognising her service to local government. Coral is a qualified journalist and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

CORAL ROSS

CEO of the City of Ballarat

Justine began as Chief Executive Officer with the City of Ballarat in May, 2016. Justine has held senior roles in higher education and local government, starting her career in local government with the City of Melbourne in the mid-1980s.

Prior to commencing as CEO with the Northern Grampians Shire Council in October 2011, Justine was the Regional Director for the Grampians Region, Regional Development Victoria, working with 11 councils, businesses and organisations from Bacchus Marsh to the South Australian border. Justine has a commitment to regional co-operation

and planning and is currently a member of Central Highlands Mayors and CEOs Forum, Grampians Regional Development Australia (Deputy Chair), Regional Cities Victoria and Local Government Chief Officers Group.

Previously Justine was a meber of the Grampians Regional Health Alliance Network, Treasurer of the Economic Development Association of Victoria, Wimmera Development Association, Grampians Regional Management Forum, Chair for the Stawell Goldmine Post-mining Opportunities Project, Chair of the Stawell Gift Advisory Committee, President of Stawell Regional Arts Inc.

JUSTINE LINLEY

My name is Julie Saylor-Briggs and I am a Torres Strait Islander Australian woman. I have lived and worked in indigenous communities for most my life, working in all levels of government, developing and delivering community capacity programs with Aboriginal communities and not for profit organisations in community development, social justice and family violence. Over the last ten years, I have worked in Local Government, working in several key mainstream programs/services; such as governance, work force training and development and community/corporate services. I have been employed for the last

18 months in the Councillor Development Coordinator’s position, with the key role of designing and coordinating all councillor development training, scholarships and other key objectives. I am a proud, strong Australian woman, and am passionate about providing everyone with a ‘fair playing field’, whether this is with education and training or governance training, to grant management and assisting with building community capacity, I am deeply, truly committed to helping the development of the ‘local voice’

Kate Sadler was the beginning Project Manager for I CAN Network’s first regional pilot in the Warrnambool Region in South-Western Victoria in 2016 and currently an I CAN Regional Board member. Kate has over 23 years of experience in education, including as the Head Educator for Life Education in Queensland. and Leadership position at St Patrick’s Primary School in Camperdown, Victoria, where she regularly worked with at-risk students on an individual and small group setting who require additional support for educational growth.

Kate graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the

University of Tasmania in 1994, majoring in primary education, before completing Postgraduate Certificates in Educational Intervention and Autism Spectrum Conditions in 2013 and 2015 respectively. Currently Kate works for the Catholic Education Office, Ballarat diocese based in the Warrnambool region as an Educational Officer- Additional Learning Needs. This role involves working in partnership with 19 Catholic schools and providing support for teachers and parents with students with additional learning needs. Kate has always had a passion and interest working with students with diversity and help raise social awareness and social acceptance.

Liz is a destination management specialist with a passion for marketing and strategy that has worked in the tourism industry for over twenty years including as General Manager-Australia for Club Tourism Publishing, Inaugural Chief Executive of Destination Melbourne, Executive Director of Tourism for the Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau and Marketing Communications Manager for the Country Victoria Tourism Council. Liz is the Inaugural

General Manager of Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism, an organisation that is three years young and at the very start of building a new path to a vibrant and sustainable visitor economy for the Great Ocean Road region.

Prior to appointment in July 2015, Andrew worked for 16 years with Wannon Water and 23 years within the Victorian water industry in various engineering and corporate roles which has resulted in a deep understanding of the water industry and the business of a water corporation.

Andrew understands Wannon Water exists because of its customers and also understands the importance and

community value of providing high quality water, sewerage and trade waste services. He has a special interest in ensuring that Wannon Water helps communities in the south-west flourish.

Andrew is a member of the Victorian Intelligent Water Network Executive Committee and Independent Member of the Corangamite Shire Audit Committee.

Andrew is a member of the Strategic Issues Committee and the People, Culture and Safety Committee.
