It is hard to believe our �rst full concert series was in 2013. I have been amazed both by theoverwhelming response from our audiences and the wonderful support we have received fromour sponsors, patrons and board members. The outstanding performances by our musicians, haveearned us a growing band of committed AHE enthusiasts.

Our 2014 series in Sydney has been so popular that for 2015 we are scheduling a second performance forthree of our concerts in the Sydney Opera House Utzon Room. We have also added Newcastle and Berryto our regional tours.

We have an exciting program for you in 2015 including a host of guest artists from both Australia andoverseas. We launch the year in March with a special Easter collaborative project. The Song Company and AHE will perform Haydn’s profound and passionate work "The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross". It will be presented by candlelight in several of Australia’s most beautiful and atmospheric spaces.

Our Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle continues with our amazing colleague and historical-performanceexpert, Neal Peres Da Costa. Neal will play Beethoven’s 3rd Piano Concerto with the AHE on a replica ‘Graf’ piano - applying newly researched performance techniques from Beethoven‘s time. You will hear a pianosound that would have been familiar to Beethoven himself.

We are also delighted to present one of Opera Australia's principal sopranos, Taryn Fiebig, as soloist in aprogram of chamber motets and cantatas by Haydn and Hasse.

The crowning glory of the year will be a wonderful all-Haydn project recreating the style of his EsterházyPalace orchestra. The project will see the return of our fabulous colleague, Canadian violinist, Marc Destrubé. Marc will co-direct with our regular guest artist, Erin Helyard, who will perform Haydn’sfamous harpsichord concerto in D Major.

Part of what makes AHE special is theinstruments and bows our players use. As a group specialising in late baroque and early classical repertoire, we use gut strings and more �exible lighter bows.

To the right you can see a collection of baroque and ‘transitional’ classical bows used by our players that have frogs made from bone or wood, making them lighter. These work well with the gut strings providing a more connected and �exible sound.

The Ensemble has started an instrument collection beginning with the beautiful 1820 Joseph Panormo violin you see held by our Artistic Director inside the front cover. The instrument has been acquired for the Artistic Director by the kindness of one of our wonderful sponsors.

AHE o�ers an intimate experience. Audience members enjoy the wonderful sounds of historical works performed on period instruments in smaller spaces. This allows the nuance of the gut strings and wood �ute to be heard more distinctly. It also specialises in presenting historical chamber versions of famous classical works, bringing them to life in a new and refreshing way. The Ensemble launch their 2015 season with an unmissable Easter project presenting one of Haydn’s most sublime works, The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, incollaboration with Australia’s premiere vocal group, The Song Company.

Haydn was originally commissioned to write the work by the Spanish church of Santa Cueva in Cádiz for Lent, to be enhanced by a local custom which enchanted the composer: “The walls, windows, and pillars of the church were hung with black cloth, and only one large lamp hanging from the centre of the roof broke the solemn darkness”.

Our performances will recreate this sublime atmosphere combining Haydn’s own string quartet and oratorio arrangements of this extraordinary work. Join us for this deeply moving experience.

Mozart’s works for the �ute are beloved jewels for this exquisite instrument, despite the composer admitting in a letter to his father that he “cannot bear” composing for it!

One of Mozart’s glorious �ute quartets is joined by another ravishing but lesser-known work for this instrumentation by the composer Wendling.

Wendling, a friend to Mozart, was �autist with the Mannheim Orchestra, a travelling virtuoso and inspired Mozart to write his many beautiful �ute parts found in the symphonies, quartets and concerti.

Three charming string trios are also featured on this program. Haydn indulged his patron Prince Esterházy with 126 trios for his favourite instrument, the baryton. However there are just three short works from this great master’s Op 53 for the combination of violin, viola and cello.

Beethoven is said to have mastered the string trio with his Op 9 collection, however the Op 8 Serenade reveals ‘a giant at play’, with Beethoven stretching the limits of the old suite format with a bold and very entertaining series of movements.

This is light-hearted chamber music at its best.

CONCERTO

2015 marks the third year in our cycle of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos withinternationally renowned, historical keyboard specialist Neal Peres Da Costa. After the success of our newly commissioned chamber arrangement of the 2nd Piano Concerto in 2014, we will be performing a world-premiere arrangement of the 3rd Piano concerto with chamber forces.

Dr. Peres Da Costa is able to combine his cutting-edge research of period performance practice and style on the fortepiano with formidable talent and a spirit of adventure that makes this one of our most exciting annual experiences. He will be performing on a replica ‘Graf’ fortepiano, similar to the instrument Beethoven would have used to premiere the work in 1803.

The Ensemble also continues its exploration of Cimador’s excellent arrangements of Mozart’s best symphonies. Audiences were thrilled by the beauty and virtuosity of the 39thSymphony in 2014, and will now experience the drama, passion and intensity of the 40th Symphony in G minor.

This program also features a wonderful string quintet by Michael Haydn, the younger brother of Joseph Haydn.

REQUIEM

After a marvelous collaborativeperformance of Mozart’s Requiem in 2014, the AHE and the Choir of St. James join forces again to present Joseph Haydn’s great mass no. 7 (the ‘Little Organ Mass’), and the Requiem in C minor by his brother Michael Haydn.

A 15-year-old Mozart played in the orchestra at the premiere of Michael Haydn’s Requiem in Salzburg. The young Mozart’s extraordinary ear and memory resulted in the use of some of this deep, lyrical and beautiful Requiem’s harmonic ingenuities in his own, composed some twenty years later. The work resonates with the grief and despair felt by the composer over the loss of his only daughter, Aloisia, the same year.

The ‘Little Organ Mass’, earned its nickname from the exceptional obbligato organ writing in the Benedictus of this ‘brief’ but wonderful work. Written for The Brothers Hospitallers, a medical services charity for the poor, the work was originally performed in the Brothers’ tiny chapel at Eisenstadt, necessitating ‘little’ forces of a string quartet, organ and chamber choir. This music makes for a�rming and healing listening.

The Australian Haydn Ensemble presents Opera Australia’s gorgeous principal soprano, Taryn Fiebig, in a dramatic chamber concert of cantatas and motets.

The program also features the Ensemble members in Hasse’s haunting B minor concerto for �ute and violin and an anonymous 18th century chamber arrangement of Haydn’s Symphony no. 102.

Joseph Haydn was no fool. When he took up his position as composer at the Esterházy Palace he knew that it was not only the Prince with whom he would need to win favour, but also the musicians of his orchestra.

The results of his musical �attery were his beautiful early symphonies Le Matin, Le Midi & Le Soir (morning, noon and evening).

Each symphony features the principal players of the Esterházy Orchestra that Haydn had at his disposal: a small band of 13-17 players. The composer himself also enjoyed showing o� in the concertmaster’s chair, and thus there are many instances of �ourishing violin solos. Playing the role of Maestro Haydn will be our dear friend and guest co-director, violinist Marc Destrubé from Vancouver.

To complement these great works, guest co-director and soloist Erin Helyard will perform Haydn’s thrilling concerto for harpsichord in D major. A magni�cent end to our 2015 season.

Our team of dedicated musicians are passionate about Education and Community Support. In 2013 we launched an education program working on 18th century repertoire and performance styles with students from over 34 di�erent schools. By popular demand, our education projects have continued to expand.

All of our core players are experienced and pro�cient educators and have worked in a variety of educational and charity projects. Above all, they love sharing what they do!

In 2015 we will host a number of string workshops wherestudents will have the chance to play alongside AHE musicians,learning about musical style, ensemble skills and communication.
