The cars have been unveiled, drivers named and pre-season testing completed, which means it’s time to christen a new Formula 1 season.

Last year Australia’s Albert Park welcomed in a new F1 era of V6 turbo charged engines along with the changing of the guard in the sport’s hierarchy.

Red Bull Racing’s dominance of the previous four years was quickly replaced by the all conquering Mercedes squad, while a host of new driving talents came to the fore, headlined by Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo.

Fast forward 12 months, the formula remains largely untouched although the ugly noses of 2014 have been banished to the history books, thanks to the new 2015 sporting regulations.

Results from pre-season testing suggests that Mercedes continue as favourites, but just how much an advantage the Brackley team holds is unclear.

Testing often provides a skewed outlook as to the natural order of the grid which always adds to the intrigue ahead of the first race of the season.

Mercedes’ domination of 2014 has forced many teams to rethink to close the gap, but while the rest of the paddock has been playing catch up, the three

pointed star has continued to develop. However, it is clear Ferrari, Williams and Red Bull

have all experienced a strong pre-season sug-gesting Mercedes may face a much more fierce challenge in 2015.

The same cannot be said for McLaren who have endured a difficult start to life with new engine supplier Honda, coupled with Fernando Alonso’s test crash that has ruled him out of the season opener.

After the concoction of jubilation and devastation following Ricciardo’s disqualification from second in last year’s Australian Grand Prix, all eyes will be on the Western Australian to deliver.

The 25-year-old has won over an army of fans last season with his swash buckling driving style and his infectious smile.

Buoyed by a breakthrough 2014 including three victories, the smiling assassin riding a wave of new-found confidence could just unleash another impeccable drive this weekend to send the partisan crowd into raptures.

or a country which prides itself on sporting success, glory at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix has so far eluded the nation’s

best drivers. In fact its been 35 years since the last

Australian won a grand prix on home soil when former F1 world champion Alan Jones won a non world championship Australian Grand Prix at Calder Park in 1980.

To put this in perspective the feat arrived 11 years before Australia’s latest hot shoe Daniel Ricciardo entered this world.

Many talented Australian drivers have tried to conquer their home event, but it has often ended in disappointment.

Mark Webber’s fourth place finish in 2012 remains the best result for a native at the home grand prix.

Last year Ricciardo provided hope for a motorsport crazed nation by coming close to cracking the hoodoo, only to be disqualified from a second place finish for a breach of the fuel regulations.

Although the drive ended ultimately in disappointment, it was that performance which made the F1 world and the Australian public stand up and take notice of the 25-year-old from Perth.

Since that moment Ricciardo has gone from strength-to-strength by outgunning his then illustrious team-mate Sebastian Vettel to become a major player at the sharp end of the grid.

After victories at Canada, Hungary and Spa, he emerged as the only driver to defeat the all conquering Mercedes in 2014.

F

A year on since his tumultuous drive in last year’s Australian Grand Prix, Ricciardo heads to Albert Park with an air of confidence, knowing he is capable of beating the world’s best on the highest stage.

Having offered the Australian public more than a glimpse into his potential, the home crowd will be desperate for the smiling assassin to create history by becoming the first Aussie to win an F1 Grand Prix on home soil.

However, on paper it is unrealistic to expect Ricciardo to stand on the top step of the podium come Sunday following Mercedes impressive showing in pre-season testing.

While it is difficult to deduce the state of play from testing results, it is clear the reigning world champion team has an edge over the field.

Such is Mercedes dominance in testing, Ricciardo admits he is likely to be chasing the silver arrows but remains confident he will challenge for a podium and one he can keep on his record.

“It’s good to be back. Last year obviously there were some mixed emotions, but it’s nice,” said Ricciardo.

“I’m ready to get the season going and it’s cool that it happens here at home.

“Obviously I got a taste of the podium last year and this year I’d love to taste it again and keep that taste in my mouth a little longer.

“I think if we put it all together we can definitely fight for that last spot on the podium this weekend. We’ll obviously try and apply as much pressure to the Mercs as possible.”

Although Ricciardo is setting his goals on a podium finish, former world champion Jones, the last home grown winner of an Australian Grand Prix, says it is conceivable that the Red Bull driver could deliver a milestone victory.

“I think Daniel will rise to the occasion even more so,” Jones told Speedcafe.com.

“He knows he can do it thats half the battle. He has got the confidence and he exceeded everyone’s expectations last year, so he comes into this year with an air of confidence there is no doubt about that.

“It is possible, at the end of the day he was on the podium last year.

“He only needs to have the two Merc drivers have each other off, a bit of unreliability, or a wet/dry race, there are a lot of variables that could have him up there.”

“It would be fantastic (If he could become the first winner)

“I think it would lift (Formula 1 in this country) a few percent more.

“It’s already at a pretty high level there are not too many Aussie’s in this country that don’t know Daniel Ricciardo.

“To win a grand prix here would lift it that little bit more.”

A new deal between Fox Sports and Network Ten that will see just 10 Formula 1 races shown live on free-to-air will start this season.

Statements announcing the five-year agreement confirm that the subscription service will carry live coverage of practice, qualifying and races from this season.

Ten of those races will also be simulcast live on Network Ten, which had exclusively hosted F1 in Australia since 2003.

The free-to-air station will continue to broadcast all sessions from Albert Park’s Australian Grand Prix as part of the agreement.

The 10 races that are exclusively live on Fox Sports will be seen on Ten’s sub-channel One HD in 60 minute highlights form at 9:30pm on the following Monday.

s of adding the AGP event to the championship, the late nature of the deal is said to have delayed that plan for another year.
